  • The effects of different feeding regimes on the compensatory growth of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus were investigated. Seven treatments with triplicates of different feeding regimes were conducted, as follows: (1) fed twice a day 6 days a week for 8 weeks; (2) starved for 1 week, then fed twice a day 6 days a week for 3 weeks; (3) starved for 2 weeks, then fed twice a day 6 days a week for 6 weeks; (4) starved for 5 days, then fed twice a day for 9 days; (5) starved for 10 days, then fed twice a day for 18 days; (6) starved for 2 days, then fed twice a day for 5 days, starved for another 3 days, and fed twice a day 4 days; and (7) starved for 4 days, then fed twice a day for 10 days, starved for another 6 days, and fed twice a day for 8 days. Forty fish averaging 12.5 g, were hand-fed to satiation according to the designated feeding schedule. Fish from the control group gained more weight than those from any other group. Feeding efficiency did not vary among treatments. In summary, olive flounder subjected to fasting with different feeding regimes did not fully compensate growth compared to fish fed for 8 weeks without fasting. In addition, the less that fasted groups were subsequently fed, the lower their compensatory growth.

  • To survey the most feeding frequence of formulated diet as food for cultured puffer in winter season, we performed a rearing test using juveniles of river puffer, Takifugu obscurus (body weight 15.0 g) for 120 days. The feeding frequencies were set up as 2times/1day, 2times/2days, 2times/3days and 2times/4days. We tested triplicately the experiment and investigated survival rate, daily food intake (DFI), feed efficiency (FE), condition factor (CF), daily growth rate (DGR). Consequently, growth was increased following to an increasing of feeding frequency, was the fast in 2times/1day of feeding frequency, and was the slowest in 2times/4days (p<0.05). DFI and CF were increased following to an decreasing of feeding frequency and was the highest in 2times/4days of feeding frequency. FE was decreased following to an decreasing of feeding frequency, and was the highest in 2times/1day of feeding frequency. In a proximate carcass composition at the final day, moisture and crude lipid contents were the lowest in 2times/4days, and in survival, there was not any significant difference among experimental groups. Therefore, we concluded that the 2times/2days are the best of feeding frequency for economical benefit of river puffer culture in winter season.

  • This study evaluated the effects of the number of feeding days and feeding rate on the growth of growing-out flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. Three replicated groups of fish ($141{\pm}1.9g$) were hand-fed a commercial feed under different feeding regimes for 9 weeks. Fish in group 6F-1S were fed to satiation twice daily for 6 consecutive days and starved for 1 day. Fish in groups 4F-1S and 3F-1S were fed to satiation twice daily for 4 and 3 days, respectively, and starved for 1 day. Fish in group 6F-90% were fed a diet of 90% of 6F-1S twice daily for 6 consecutive days and starved for 1 day. The weight gain, feed efficiency and daily feed intake of the fish groups in 4F-1S and 3F-1S were not significantly different from those of group 6F-1S. The weight gain and feed efficiency of fish in group 6F-90% were not significantly different from those of group 6F-1S. The results of this study suggest that the growth of growing-out flounder fed to satiation twice daily for 4 or 3 days after starving 1 day was similar to that of fish fed to satiation for 6 days, and that the proper feeding rate for growth could be lowered to 90% of satiation without growth suppression.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effects of different weaning age on feeding performance and behaviour of piglets. Sixty crossbred(YLxD) litters of piglets were randomly alloted to be 15 pens with 4 piglets per pen and 5 pens per treatment by weaned at 14, 21, and 28 days. Pens were video-taped for 24 hours immediately at 7 weeks and 8 weeks of age. The piglets weaned at 14 and 21 days were significantly (P<0.05) much intake than piglets weaning at 28 days. The piglets weaning at 14 days were significantly lighter than piglets weaning at 14 and 21 days fro m2 weeks to 8 weeks age. However, feed conversion ration was significantly(P<0.05) improved according to late weaning days. Times spent engaged in Feeding, lying and walking were similar in piglets across weaning age. They also showed similar occurrence of drinking and agonistic behaviour at 7 weeks and 8 weeks of age. Piglets weaned at 14 days exhibited more belly-nosing behaviour at 7 weeks of age, but similar in piglets at 8 weeks of age across weaning age. We concluded that piglets performance influenced by weaning day, however time spent for feeding, lying and walking behaviour were no significance. Drinking, Agonistic and belly-nosing were not significantly different by weaning age.

  • The results ok feeding experiments to the mice with ginseng extract, ginseng Powder, and ADAPTAGEN, for 30 days before X-ray irradiation and for 40 days after the X-ray irradiation at 750 rads were as follow: 1. The 50% lethals days (LD50, ) by the X-ray irradiation were 9 days at 1, 000 rads. 10 days at 900 rads, 11 days at 800 rads, 14 days at 760 rads, and 19 darts at 750 rads. Therefore, the standard radiation dose was set at 750 radb/8 min. 2. The 80% of the control group mice exposed to the X-ray radiation without ginseng feeding died in periods ranging from 14 to 24 days and the 20~30% of the ginseng extract and ginseng powder feeding groups died. But the 100% of the mice fed with ADAPTAGEN survived. 3. Testicles of the control group became smaller in weight than the nomad group by 26.5 to 29.0% and those of the ginseng extract and ginseng powder feeding group reduced by 44.6 to 60.4%. However, testicles of the ADAPTiIGEN feeding group increased in size by 77.4% to 87.1% and in weight by 61%, showing a recovery phenomenon approarhing to those of the ordinary mice. The ADAPTAGEN feeding group mice were also as active in color as the ordinary ones. 4. An electron micrograph(X8, 000X2.2) of the liver cells of the mice which had been 40 days after X-ray irradiation showed as follows; The control group appeared that is physiological action stopped due to the frequent occurrence of morphological change of the nucleus and diffusion of chromosome, reduction in microspores and expansion of microsomts, and endoplasmic change of mitochondria. The liver cells or the ADAPTAGEN feeding group were in a state similar to those of the ordinary mice restoring to normalcy In contrast, the liver cells of the ginseng extract and ginseng powder feeding groups were still far from being normal. 5. A serological analysis showed that the control group sharply decreased in albumin, Y-g1obu1in, and IgG so far as to cause dystrophy and to weaken antibody resistance but that ginseng extract and ginseng powder feeding groups, though in a little more restoring state than the control group, were still far from the normal group. The ADAPTAGEN feeding group restored to a state as comparable to the normal group in the contents of albumin ${\gamma}$-globulin, IgG and serum protein. In order words, it is noteworthy that ADAPTAGEN feeding was effective in revitalizing the destroyed cells of a living body and that it has the function of normalizing antibody components.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect on polyunsaturate fatty acid diets and feeding periods on the antithrombosis. the hematological changes in the blood and fatty acid compositions of platelets in rats. Each group of rats was fed a diet containing 20%(W/W) corn oil beef tallow sardine oil and the general stock diet for 10, 20. 40 and 80 days. Rats fed sardine oil diet showed significantly longer bleeding time than any other diet groups after 20 days feeding The whole blood clotting time of sardine oil group fed for 80 days was increased significantly. The number of platelet and the concentration of hemoglobin showed no significant difference among all groups. The number of white blood cell was decreased continously in sardine oil group after 10 days feeding. The level of malondialdehyde generation during thrombin-induced aggregation of platelets was decreased continously in sardine oil grou after 20 days feeding. With regard to the composition of platelet fatty acid the ratio of eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA 20: 5 $\omega$-3) to arachidonic acid(AA 20:4 $\omega$-6) was increased in sardine oil group but decreased in corn oil groups and beef tallow groups with days. In conclusion the rats fed sardine oil diet for more than 20 days showed the fact that EPA induced the antithrombosis. the changes in number of white blood cell and the fatty acid composition of platelets.

  • This study determined the optimum feeding frequency for the growth of juvenile cherry salmon (Oncorhynchus masou). Triplicate groups of fish (initial mean weight 19.1 g) were fed extruded pellets at four feeding frequencies for 50 days: once every 2 days, once a day, twice a day, and three times a day. The mean water temperature during the feeding trial was $17.9{\pm}1.59^{\circ}C$. The survival of all groups was 100%. The final fork length of fish fed twice a day was significantly greater than that of the other groups (P<0.05). The weight gain of fish fed two and three times daily was significantly greater than that of fish fed once a day or every 2 days (P<0.05). The daily feed intake increased significantly with feeding frequency (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference in the weight gain of fish fed two or three times a day. The feed efficiency of fish fed once every 2 days was highest (P<0.05), and the feed efficiency of fish fed two or three times a day was significantly higher than that of fish fed once a day (P<0.05). The results of this study indicated that the optimum feeding frequency for the growth of juvenile cherry salmon is twice a day, while the feeding efficiency of fish fed once every 2 days was best.

  • It is important to supply adequate nutrition to critically ill patients, whose gastrointestinal system is properly functioning, through the enteral tube feeding if oral intake is impossible. In this study we investigated the changes in nutritional status with enteral tube feeding according to the volume required. We investigated the volume ordered according to the patient's requirements, volume infused according to the volume ordered in 41 enteral tube feeding patients in intensive care unit from Jannuary to July, 2000. Body weight, serum albumin level, and total lymphocyte count were evaluated to assess nutritional status. The mean fasting period was 5 days before the enteral feeding and patients whose fasting period over 3 days were 51%. The mean enteral tube feeding period was 29 days and method of feeding was nasogastric, bolus feeding 6 times per day. The volume ordered was 69.7% of the patients' recommended calorie and volume infused was 86.6% of their volume prescribed. Accordingly, the volume infused was estimated 61.7% of their volume required. Only 44.6% of their reqiured volume was infused within 3 days after enteral tube feeding was started. It took 16 days in average to meet the patients' recommended calorie; 56% of subjects still did not fully met their requirements by the end point. Among the impeding factors in supplying enteral tube feeding, factors related to the number of feeding were high residual volume in stomach, vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal distension and surgery. Factors related to the acctual infused volume were diarrhea, gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal distension, airway management and tube reinsertion. Significant correlations were shown between the volume infused and changes in both the patients' weight and serum albumin level. Deviding the subjects into two groups by their infused volume, less than 70% and more than that, we compared the two to come up with a significant difference in their serum albumin level, -0.23 vs 0.21, and their body weight, -4.52 vs 0.12. In enteral tube feeding, the volume delivered in sufficient to the pateints' energy requirement can affect their nutriitional status in critically ill patient; adequate nutritional management plan is essential. It is necessary to make every effort to educate clinical staff and to set up a unified management program to prescribe adequate ammount of energy for the patient's nutritional requirement.

  • The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of early feed restriction on growth, fat accumulation and meat composition in unsexed broiler chickens. In experiment 1, three hundred and fifty one-day-old broiler chicks were divided into 7 groups. Each treatment group was represented by five replicates of ten broilers each. One group was fed ad libitum as the control group and the other six groups were fed 25% ad libitum (25% multiplied by amount of feed intake of ad libitum chicks at the previous day) for 4 or 6 days, 50% ad libitum for 4 or 6 days, and 75% ad libitum for 4 or 6 days. In experiment 2, five hundred broiler chicks were divided into 10 groups. Each treatment group was represented by five replicates of ten broilers each. One group was fed ad libitum as the control group. Three initial age at which broilers were restricted (2, 4 or 6 days of age) and three type of feed restriction (physical restriction, meal feeding and diet dilution) ($3{\times}3$) were examined. They were restricted feeding for 6 days. Experimental results showed that broilers fed 25% ad libitum for 4-6 days tended to reduce leg meat fat with lower abdominal fat (p<0.05) (experiment 1). Breast meat fat was significantly higher in restricted broilers (p<0.01). Plasma triglyceride was higher in broilers fed 75% ad libitum for 4-6 days. In experiment 2, abdominal fat was lower in restricted broilers (p<0.05). Breast meat fat was significantly higher (p<0.01), whereas leg meat fat was significantly lower (p<0.05) in restricted broilers. Plasma triglyceride was significantly higher in physical feed restriction for 4 days, meal feeding for 4 days and diet dilution for 6 days (p<0.05). In conclusion, to reduce fat accumulation in abdomen and leg meat, broilers should be fed 25% ad libitum for 6 days started at 4 days, or subjected to meal feeding (6 hours per day for 6 days) started at 6 days.
