This study was conducted to evaluated the nutrition quality of the commercial supplementary foods for infants and young children and to seek a solution to the establishment of standards of nutrient requirements for supplementary foods in Korea. Information on food ingredients, nutrient contents, claims about usefulness of food components and instructions for feeding preparation were obtained from the labels of 33 commercial supplementary foods manufactured by 4 different domestic companies. According to the standard of supplementary foods for infants and young children described in the Korean Food Code, the commercial supplementary foods were categorized into two different types, weaning food and baby food. All the commercial weaning foods were in powder form and mainly composed of cereals, whereas all the baby foods were mainly composed of fruits in the form of canned juice. The weaning foods contained more nutrients than the baby foods did, and the nutrient levels of the weaning foods expressed as nutrient density on energy basis were higher than the RDA for infants aged 5 to 11 months, suggesting that the commercial weaning foods provide adequate amounts of nutrients. If one followed the instructions for feeding preparation appearing on the label, however, recommended amounts of intake of the weaning foods would provide too much energy as well as nutrients. There were many differences in nutrient standards of weaning foods between the Korean Food Code and Codex international food standard. In conclusion, the establishment of standards for nutrient requirements for the supplementary foods requires significant scientific studies on what nutrients are the most inadequate in Korean infants and young children feeds and what levels of nutrients should be added to the foods in order to supplement their nutrition. In addition, it is very important to have a strong scientific basis to support our standard when discrepancies exist between our standard and the international standard. This study compared the effect of four different feeding methods for gestating gilts on reproductive performance and growth of their progeny. A total of 40 F1 primiparous sows (Yorkshire${\times}$Landrace) were allotted to four treatments in a completely randomized design (CRD). For treatments, gestating period of sows was divided into three trimesters (0-35 d, 36-90 d and 91-110 d) and different amounts of feed were provided to each treatment group by Flat, Down-Up-Down (DUD), Up-Down-Up (UDU) and Down-Up-Up (DUU) feeding methods. The experimental diet was formulated to meet or exceed the standards of NRC (1998). Body weight gain of gestating gilts from d 0 to 110 was affected by feeding method (p<0.05). When gilts were fed constant feed ration (Flat feeding), less body weight loss was observed during lactation (-0.9 kg, p<0.05) and desirable backfat thickness (average 19.5 mm) was acquired at 110 days of gestation. Feed intake of lactating sows tended to be greater (4.22, 3.60, 3.97 and 4.13 kg/d, p>0.05) as sows in Flat feeding treatment had lower backfat thickness during gestation compared with other treatments (p<0.05). When gestating gilts were fed higher amount of feed during mid-trimester, the number of stillborn (1.4 piglet per litter, p<0.05) and mummies (0.8 piglet per litter, p = 0.25) were increased compared to other treatments. Feeding methods for gestating gilts had no effect on litter weight and gain of litter weight during the nursing period. Flat feeding method resulted in decreased plasma glucose concentration at 7 d postpartum (p<0.05), and increased LH concentration at 21 d postpartum (p<0.01) compared to other treatments. These results suggested that higher feed intake of gestating gilts resulted in detrimental effects on body condition and reproductive performance of sows. When gestating gilts consumed constant feed during gestation (2 kg/d), better reproductive performance and less body weight loss in lactation were observed because sows consumed more feed during the whole lactation period. Consequently, Flat feeding will be a desirable feeding strategy for gestating gilts to maximize reproductive performance, and better body condition of sows without any negative influence on the growth of their progeny.

In the spring silkworm rearing period of year 1998, some nutritional aspects were studied in the Agricultural Research Station of the Komotini town in Greece, to investigate the feeding behaviour of some Bulgarian silkworm hybrids, suitable for spring rearing, during the fourth and fifth instal under the local climatic conditions. The silkworms were fed by locally cultivated Japanese Kinriu mulberry (Morus alba L.) variety leaves. Eight Bulgarian hybrids had been used, namely Vratza-53xVratza-52, Ukraine-20xVratza-53, Super 1xHessa 2, Merefa 2xVratza 35, as well as their reciprocal crosses. The studies showed out a remarkably higher feed intake and feed utilization by the hybrids Hessa 2xSuper-1, Merefa 2xVratza 35 and Vratza-52xVratza-53. The same hybrids showed an efficient food utilization by means of daily growths cocoon shell ratio and raw silk output. In terms of food to silk conversion efficiency Hessa 2xSuper-1 hybrid gave the best results. Larval stage duration for fourth and fifth instar was not affected by feed intake and utilization. All hybrids showed a good adaptation to the local environment and their feeding performance was equal to the international existing standards. All calculated parameters were found to be around the mean values of other up to date presented results and thus considered as acceptable for the needs of the local production.
This study was conducted to evaluted the industry foodservice management practices, and to suggest guidelines for the effective foodservice management. The results of the study can be summarized as follows: 1) Feeding numbers among the types of industry were varied widely, and foodservice personnels were insufficient when comparing with the feeding numbers. 2) Effective recording as well as management system were not fully established in menu planning, food production, assembly and service. Thermal retention equipments were not provided to control food quality. 3) Convenience food items such as frozen beef cutlet, hambergar patty, retail cuts of meat, and canned fish were seldom used. 4) Sanitary conditions of kitchen and dining areas were evaluated as unsatisfactory comdition. 5) Equiped rate of facilities in surveyed foodservice operations were 52.7 percentage of the required standards.
One-to three -month-old infants(n=252) were compared their growth performance(weight, length, head circumference, chest circumference) by feeding methods in cross-sectional study. There were two groups : breast-fed(BF) and formula-fed groups(FF). The weights of infants at 1, 2, and 3 postpartum month were 4.50$\pm$0.48kg, 5.76$\pm$0.62kg and 6.67$\pm$0.68kg, respectively. The weigh of male infants was higher than females. The length were 53.7$\pm$2.6cm, 57.4$\pm$3.3cm, 61.1$\pm$3.1cm at one to three postpartum months, respectively. The length of male infants was higher than females, too. Overall there were no significant differences between feeding methods in weight, length, head and chest circumferences, and monthly weight and length velocity. But 3-month-old formula-fed male infants showed bigger significantly in weight, monthly weight velocity and chest circumference than the breast-feds. By Korean standards, weight-for-height Z-score were distributed from 0 to +2. Not only was there a few malnourished infants but also overnourished were noticed, especially in formula-fed group. From this survey, long-time survey on growth and development of large scales might be necessary to determine the effect of feeding methods of infants after 3 months and to set proper grwoth standard for infant. And it was suggested the that the careful attention of polarized nutritional problems of early infants was needed, especially in formula-fed group. (Korean J Community Nutrition 2(1) : 3~12, 1997)
A untrition survey of early childhood was undertaken among 102 rural young children, aged 3 to 6, attending three day care centers of Hongcheon-gun, Kangwon province, in July of 1987, to investigate dietary and nutritional status. The results were obtained as follows: Mean values of height and arm circumference ranged from 96 to 97% of the KSRI's standards. However, mean value of weight met 91% of that standard. Mean value of hematocrit was 37.3±3.5%. According to the criterion established by the WHO, 3% of the subjects were proven to be anemic. Mean value of urinary urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio was 13.8±7.6; the higher the age lower the ratio was shown. Intake of energy and nutrients ranged from 63 to 88% of the RDAs. Carbohydrate provided 68% of total energy intake; protein accounted for 14%; fat provided 18%. Energy intake was divided among breakfast, lunch supper and snacks in a percentage ratio of 21:35:26:18. The survey clarified that the day care feeding largely supplemented the inadequate dietary intakes of these young children at home. Family factors, anthropometric measurements, biochemical results were positively correlated with nutrient intakes. Authors with this study can be contributed, as a reference, to develop the community nutrition programs as well as improving the quality of day care feeding.
The main purpose of this study was to provide a basic information for the efficient foodservice management in elementary schools. A survey was conducted to get the information on the cost management and centralization needs of dietitians working for school foodservice in Kyungki-do. Detail information was collected from 85 dietitians. Statistical data analysis was completed using the SPSS/PC/sup/+ package for descriptive analysis, t-test, $\chi$$^2$test and ANOVA. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Meal costs per one person evaluated on the standards of monthly budget basis in May and June, 1996 did not show any significant differance between commisary foodservice schools and conventional ones. Labor costs of island type and rural type were significantly higher than those of urban type. The schools with less than 1,000 feeding numbers spent more labor costs than those with over 1,001-feeding numbers did. 2. In island type and rural type, total meal costs increased according as the scale of the schools decreased. 3. Results of the survey on dietitians' centralization noeds showed that the aspects of common-purchasing and common solid waste management marked the highest ratings, whereas the aspects of commissary foodserice system got the lowest rating.

This paper presents an experimental study on the optimal settings for the selected DC fault relay (50F) to improve the operating performance for the high-speed circuit breaker on DC feeding system which ensure safety within rolling stock maintenance depot. In this study, current supplied to overhead contact wire was calculated on 1 ms interval to analyze the correction values of DC fault selective relay for the operation of current supply cutout. Particularly, standards for the accurate detection of accidents between an electric railway vehicle and the electric power facilities are shown by investigating the optimal correction values for detection of fault current, and the results indicated that it takes about 213 ms for the DC fault selective relay(50F) to fully open. In the future, the correction values of DC fault selective relay suggested in this paper will be used as the reference values of protective relay for the safe operation of DC electric railroad system such as urban railway.
The climate and marketing system of raw milk in Taiwan create problems in balance feeding of protein and energy in lactating cows in Taiwan. Level of urea nitrogen both in bulk milk and serum reflects ruminal protein degradation and post-ruminal protein provision, whereas milk protein concentration responds to dietary energy intake and bacterial protein production in the rumen. Establishment of a range of reference standards in milk protein and urea nitrogen levels can be applied as a noninvasive economical feeding guide to monitor the balance of protein and energy intake. Standard reference levels of 3.0% milk protein and 11-17 mg/dL milk urea nitrogen (MUN) were established. Level of milk protein below 3.0% is regarded as indicating inadequate dietary energy whereas MUN below or above the range is regarded as a deficiency or surplus in dietary protein. Results from analysis of bulk a milk samples collected from 174 dairy herds over Taiwan showed that only one quarter (25.29%) of the herds received a balanced intake of protein and energy, 33.33% adequate protein with energy inadequate, 22.99% herds in protein surplus with energy inadequate, 10.35% herds in protein surplus with energy adequate, 4.6% protein deficiency with energy adequate, and 3.45% herds with both protein and energy inadequate. Energy inadequate herds accounted for 60% of the total dairy herds in Taiwan with 56% adequate, 38% surplus and 6% inadequate in protein. In comparing milk sampled from bulk milk on different seasons from Lee-Kang area in the southern Taiwan, the concentrations of milk fat and milk protein were significantly higher in the cool season (February) than in the warm season (August) (p<0.05), whereas the urea nitrogen in the milk was significantly lower in the cool season than in the warm season (p<0.05). This indicated that lactating cows had excess protein and/or inadequate energy intake in the warm season in this area. It appears that the major problem feeding in lactating cows is energy intake shortage, especially during the warm season in Taiwan.
An experiment was conducted on crossbred male calves to study the effect of arsenic (As) on immunity status and certain hematological parameters. Ten crossbred male calves of 3-4 months of age were distributed into two equal groups. Group I was kept as control, whereas, group II was supplemented daily with 50 ppm As (as $As_sO_3$) up to 90 days, in the diet. Calves of both groups were fed as per ICAR standards and their requirements were fulfilled by feeding concentrate mixture and green oats. All calves were kept under similar managemental conditions. Blood samples were collected at fortnightly intervals to estimate various haematological parameters and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activity. Serum Ig and serum glutamic pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) were also measured. Cell-mediated immune responses of the calves were monitored at 0, 45 and 90 of experimental feeding, through lymphocyte proliferation. No change in blood total leukocyte counts (TLC), differential leukocyte counts (DLC), packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin (Hb) and SGPT was observed with As supplementation. A decrease in SOD activity was noticed in group II calves. Stimulation index (SI) for lymphocyte proliferation decreased from 1.14 to 0.79 in group II calves during 90 days experimental feeding, whereas, there was no change in SI values in group I indicating significant decrease in immune response of As supplemented calves. Blood As concentration increased in group II calves with the decrease in immune response. Short term supplementation of As to growing calves suggested suppressive effects on cell-mediated immunity. However, long term experiments are required to demonstrate clearly the efects of this toxic metal in calves.
