Dynamic of heat production partitioning in rooster by indirect calorimetry

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to describe a methodological procedure to quantify the heat production (HP) partitioning in basal metabolism or fasting heat production (FHP), heat production due to physical activity (HPA), and the thermic effect of feeding (TEF) in roosters. Methods: Eighteen 54-wk-old Hy Line Brown roosters (2.916±0.15 kg) were allocated in an open-circuit chamber of respirometry for O2 consumption (VO2), CO2 production (VCO2), and physical activity (PA) measurements, under environmental comfort conditions, following the protocol: adaptation (3 d), ad libitum feeding (1 d), and fasting conditions (1 d). The Brouwer equation was used to calculate the HP from VO2 and VCO2. The plateau-FHP (parameter L) was estimated through the broken line model: HP = U×(R-t)×I+L; I = 1 if t<R or I = 0 if t>R; Where the broken-point (R) was assigned as the time (t) that defined the difference between a short and long fasting period, I is conditional, and U is the decreasing rate after the feed was withdrawn. The HP components description was characterized by three events: ad libitum feeding and short and long fasting periods. Linear regression was adjusted between physical activity (PA) and HP to determine the HPA and to estimate the standardized FHP (st-FHP) as the intercept of PA = 0. Results: The time when plateau-FHP was reached at 11.7 h after withdrawal feed, with a mean value of 386 kJ/kg0.75/d, differing in 32 kJ from st-FHP (354 kJ/kg0.75/d). The slope of HP per unit of PA was 4.52 kJ/mV. The total HP in roosters partitioned into the st-FHP, termal effect of feeding (TEF), and HPA was 56.6%, 25.7%, and 17.7%, respectively. Conclusion: The FHP represents the largest fraction of energy expenditure in roosters, followed by the TEF. Furthermore, the PA increased the variation of HP measurements.

Effect of feeding frequency on reproductive performances and stress responses in gestating sows

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of feeding frequency on a sow's reproductive performance and stress response during gestation. A total of twenty multiparous sows (Yorkshire × Landrace) were used in a completely randomized design based on their parity, body weight (BW), and backfat thickness (BFT), and the sows were allotted to two different feeding systems: 1) once daily feeding (OF) and 2) twice daily feeding (TF) in corn-soybean meal based diets. The gestation diet was formulated to contain 3,265 kcal of metabolizable energy (ME) / kg, 12.90% of crude protein (CP), and 0.75 % of total lysine. The lactation diet was formulated to contain 3,265 kcal of ME / kg, 16.80% of CP, and 1.08% of total lysine and provided ad libitum during lactation. In gestation, sow BFT and BF changes were not affected by feeding frequency, but higher BW and BW gain from day 35 to 90 and day 35 to 110 were observed in OF sow (p < 0.10). In lactation, feeding frequency did not influence on BW, BW gain, BFT, BF changes, average daily feed intake, and wean-to-estrus interval. Also, there were no differences in litter size, litter weight and piglet weight in lactating sows. OF sows had higher (p < 0.05; p < 0.10) protein, solid-not-fat, and total solid concentrations in colostrum compared to TF sows, while OF sows had a lower (p < 0.05) lactose concentration in colostrum compared to TF sows. Sows in OF showed significantly lower average daily water consumption (ADWC) from day 35 to 110 of gestation (p < 0.05). While there were no significant differences in stereotypic behaviors and salivary cortisol levels during gestation between treatments, the OF sows showed less time spending on the activity at day 105 (p < 0.05). In conclusion, reduced feeding frequency increased BW gain during gestation, decreased activation time, and changed the colostrum composition. This information may contribute to the understanding of the physiological and behavioral change of gestating sows by manipulating feeding frequency.

농촌지역 바이오매스 에너지 보급 활성화 전략 - 시설재배 난방을 중심으로 - (Strategies for Increasing Biomass Energy Utilization in Rural Areas - Focusing on heating for greenhouse cultivation -)

  • The demand of renewable energy is expected to grow in the long run in spite of current stable lower oil prices. Energy consumption for heating in horticulture greenhouse is large and affects the profits of the farms. This study analyzed the availability of biomass in rural area and proposed the strategies for utilizing the biomass for greenhouse heating. Data reveal the annual average fuel consumption in greenhouses is about 78 TOE/ha. Considering biomass resource in rural areas, agricultural residues are not sufficient to meet the biomass demand from greenhouses. Therefore it is recommended to secure further biomass including wild herbaceous biomass and woody biomass from forest. Based on the conditions of biomass gasification equipment investment and fuel prices, maximum allowable price of biomass turned out about 100,000 KRW/t to be competitive to kerosine. Biomass supply chain should be established for facilitating biomass trading between biomass consumers and biomass producers such as farmers who provide crop residues. An online trading system is an example of the system where consumers who utilize biomass make payments to suppliers and get the information about the biomass. Intermediate collection storages are required to store biomass from distributed sources. Operation of biomass heating systems in demonstration greenhouses is necessary to get information to refine and further develop commercial biomass heating systems. Relatively large greenhouses are desirable to have biomass heating systems for economic viability. The location of the greenhouse farms should be selected within the area where enough biomass resources are available for feeding the biomass facility.

  • 최근 철도시스템에서의 에너지 효율을 증가시키고자하는 다양한 노력들이 국내외에서 일어나고 있으며 특히 대도사의 주요 대중교통수단인 도시철도는 사격이 짧고 출발-정차의 반복이 매우 빈번한 운전 특성을 가지고 있다. 따라서 동일 전력공급계통 내에서 개별 열차들이 각 역에서 출발-정차를 반복할 때, 여러 대의 열차가 동일한 전력공급 계통에서 봉사에 출발할 경우 상당히 큰 기동전류가 발생할 수 있고 이러한 과도적인 대규모 가동전류는 전기 에너지의 열 손실로 귀결되어 에너지 효율성을 저하하는 요소가 된다. 본 연구에서는 전력공급 계통 단위별로 열차의 군을 설정하고 설정된 열차군 들을 중심으로 각 역에서의 출발 기동시간을 분산 관리하며 동시에 각종 운영 제약을 만족시키는 열차시간표 작성 수리모형에 대한 설계 방법을 제시한다. 이를 통하여 과도한 기동전류를 최소화 하고 열차운영체계의 운영 효율성을 확보하고자 한다

흡수열펌프에서 흡수기의 성능 개선 연구 (A Study on Improvement of Performance of Absorber in Absorption Heat Pump)

  • 냉 난방 수요에서 일어나는 환경오염의 최소화와 화석연료 소비를 감소시키기 위해서 에너지보존을 개선시키는 것은 필수적이다. 이러한 점에서 흡수식 열펌프기술은 에너지 절약을 위해서 많은 가능성을 가지고 있다. 흡수식 열펌프는 에너지를 주입하지 않고 폐열의 이용을 높일 수 있는 방법이다. 흡수식 열펌프는 흡수기에서 흡수된 양의 증가가 매우 중요하기 때문에 흡수기 성능이 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 흡수기의 성능을 개선시키기 위해서 메탄올과 글리세린을 작동유체로 하는 내벽에 나선형관을 설치하여 액상을 접선방향으로 공급하는 흡수기에 관한 연구를 수행하였다. 이 방법은 액상흐름에서 난류를 일으켜 물질 및 열전달을 증가시킨다. 흡수기의 각 위치에서 온도와 농도를 측정하여 열전달계수와 물질전달계수를 계산하였고 주입부분에서 열 및 물질전달이 향상되었음을 알 수 있었다.

산란계 사료에 \beta-Glucanase 첨가가 보리의 이용성에 미치는 효과 (Effects of the Addition of \beta-Glucanase to Barley-based Layer Diet)

  • Effects of the addition of \beta-glucanase to barley-based layer diets were examined by feeding 200 Leghorn layers with corn-based (Control) and \beta-glucanase supplemented diets (Barley+ Enzyme). The results obtained are sumrrarized as follows. 1. There were no siginificant (P>0.05) differences in hen-day egg production(%) and average egg weight between two treatments, indicating that the \beta-glucanase supplemented barley could successfully replace the commonly used corn in the layer diets. 2. Although there was no statistical difference (P>0.05) between two treatments, the daily feed consumption was numerically high in layers fed the barly diet compared to the corn-based diet. 3. Availabilities of crude fat and crude fiber of the barley diet were significantly poor (P<0.05) as compared to corn diet. 4. The \beta-glucarase supplementation depressed the viscosity of barley diets and excreta from therm. 5. Both serum and egg yolk cholesterol were not significantly affected by the addition of \beta-glucarase in the barley based diet. Our data indicate that the barley grain supplemented with \beta-glucarase can be sucessfully used as an energy source of layer diet when there is a price advantage. Although some possibilities to produce low cholesterol egg were recognized in this study, further studies pertaining to long-term feeding experiment and elucidaton of the metabolic interrelationship between serum and yolk cholesterol, are required to confirm the result.

에너지 절약형 공기압 시스템 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Energy Saving Type Pneumatic System Characteristics)

  • Recently, improving the energy efficiency of a pneumatic system and reducing the consumption of compressed air were a concern of scholars at domestic and abroad. The using fields of a pneumatic system are widely used in factory automation of manufacturing line, chemical factories with explosiveness danger and petroleum industries etc. In particular, pneumatic cylinder is applied to feeding work of workpiece. jig tools and press mechanism, reciprocation and rotary motion with rack and pinion. In this study, the experimental apparatus consisted to pneumatic cylinder, dual supply pressure regulator and solenoid valve. The dual supply pressure regulator connected to outlet port of solenoid valve. The supply pressure($4.5kg_f/cm^2$) of compressed air goes into the rodless chamber 1 to drive the piston rod forward which is named working stage. The supply pressure ($2kg_f/cm^2$) of compressed air goes into the rod chamber 2 to drive the piston rod backward which is named no-working stage. Accordingly, the research results of this study can be obtained to Energy-Saving Effects of the compressed air about 35%.

Pellet사료(飼料)의 급여(給與)가 병아리의 대사(代謝)에너지와 질소축적(窒素蓄積)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Studies on the Effect of Feeding Pelleted Diets on Energy Metabolism and Nitrogen Retention in Growing Chickens)

  • 한국(韓國)에서 사육(飼育)되고 있는 닭의 육용종(肉用種)과 난용종(卵用種)의 초생추(初生雛 )를 공시동물(供試動物)로 하여 사료(飼料)의 조성분(組成分)과 배합률(配合率)이 동일(同一)한 pellet사료(飼料)와 all-mash사료(飼料)를 급여(給與)하여 사료섭취량(飼料攝取量)과 증체량(增體量) 및 대사(代謝)에너지와 질소축적률(窒素蓄積率)의 차이(差異)를 측정(測定)하여 pellet사료(飼料)를 급여(給與)함으로써 사료(飼料)의 효율적(效率的) 이용(利用)을 기대(期待)한 본(本) 시험(試驗)의 결과(結果)는 다음과 같다. 1. 각(各) 주별(週別) 1 수당(首當) 평균(平均) 증체량(增體量)은 5주령(週令)부터 pellet구(區)가 높아졌는데, 9주령(週令)에서 평균(平均) 1 수당(首當) 체중(體重)은 Hubbard의 pellet구(區)가 2,702g이었고 all-mash구(區)는 2,571g으로 pellet구(區)가 131g 더 증체(增體)되었고, Hy-line을 pellet구(區)와 all-mash구(區)가 각각(各各) 812g과 777g으로 전자(前者)가 35g 더 증체(增體)되어 pellet 사료(飼料)를 급여(給與)한 구(區)가 증체율(增體率)이 높은 결과(結果)였다. 2. 9주간(週間)의 1 수당(首當) 사료섭취총량(飼料攝取總量)은 pellet구(區)가 all-mash구(區)에 비(比)하여 육용종(肉用種)은 69g, 난용종(卵用種)은 75g을 더 섭취(攝取)하였다. 이 사료섭취량(飼料攝取量)에 의(依)해서 9주령(週令)까지의 사료효율(飼料效率)을 보면 육용종(肉用種)의 pellet구(區)는 0.38, all-mash구(區)는 0.36이며, 난용종(卵用種)은 0.26과 0.25로 pellet구(區)가 약간(若干) 높았다. 음수량(飮水量)은 난용종(卵用種)에 있어서 pellet구(區)가 all-mash구(區)보다 많았다. 3. 분뇨(糞尿)의 배설량(排泄量)도 사료섭취량(飼料攝取量)과 같이 pellet구(區)가 약간(若干) 많았고 질소(窒素)의 섭취율(攝取率)은 육용종(肉用種)이 57~67%였으며 난용종(卵用種)은 65~73% 였는데 두 품종(品種)이 다 같이 pellet구(區)가 all-mash구(區)보다 1~4% 정도(程度) 개선(改善)되는 것을 인정(認定)하였다. 4. 대사(代謝)에너지의 효율(效率)은 8주령(週令)에서 육용종(肉用種)이 73.4~74.3%였고 난용종(卵用種)은 82.8~83.8%로서 pellet구(區)가 1%정도(程度) 높았다. 5. 생산(生産)에너지를 호흡시험(呼吸試驗)에 의(依)해서 측정(測定)한 결과(結果)는 대사체중당(代謝體重當) 발생열량(發生熱量)이 pellet구(區)에서 94.1~102.6kcal였고 all-mash구(區)는 106.1~112.6kcal였으며 생산(生産)에너지의 효율(效率)도 41.3~48.9%와 39.0~45.8%로 pellet구(區)가 약(約) 2~3%정도(程度) 높은 것을 인정(認定)하였다. 6. 본(本) 시험(試驗)의 결과(結果)에 의(依)해서 사료(飼料)를 pelleting함으로써 얻을 수 있는 효과(效果)는 사료섭취량(飼料攝取量)과 증체량(增體量)이 증가(增加)되었으며 사료효율(飼料效率)도 높아지고 대사(代謝)에너지와 생산(生産)에너지의 이용율(利用率)도 높아지는 것을 인정(認定)하였다. 그러나 pellet사료(飼料)와 all-mash 사료(飼料)의 급여(給與)가 열량증가(熱量增加)의 차이(差異)에 어떤 mechanism으로 영향(影響)하는지는 앞으로 계속(繼續)해서 구명(究明)할 필요(必要)가 있다.

Current situation and future prospects for beef production in South Korea - A review

  • Hanwoo cattle are an important food source in Korea and their supply can have a major impact on meat availability for Korean consumers. The Hanwoo population was 1.8 million head in 2005 and gradually increased to 2.6 million in 2015. Per capita beef consumption has also increased, to 11.6 kg per year in 2015, and is expected to continue to increase. Because intramuscular fat percentage is a critical contributor to meat quality, Hanwoo cattle are fed a high-energy corn-based diet for long fattening periods. Long fed diet causes significant alterations in fat percentage in the loin muscle and other areas of the carcass. However, these long feeding periods increase feeding costs and beef prices. Recently, there has been increased Korean consumer demand for lean beef which has less fat, but is tender and priced more reasonably. These consumer demands on the Korean beef industry are driving differing beef production systems and also changes to the beef grading methodology. Korean government has made a significant investment to select bulls with favorable production traits using progeny testing. Progeny tested bull semen has been disseminated to all Hanwoo farmers. A beef traceability system has been employed for all cattle breeds in Korea since 2009. Hanwoo cattle are ear-marked with a 12-digit identification number from birth to slaughter. This number allows traceability of the management history of individual cattle, and also provides information to consumers. Traceability including management information such as herd, farm, year of birth, and carcass data can determine estimated breeding values of Hanwoo. For a sustainable Hanwoo industry, research scientists in Korea have attempted to develop feeds for efficient fattening periods and precision feeding systems based on genetic information for Hanwoo cattle. These initiatives aim to Korean consumer demands for beef and provide more precision management in beef production in Korea.

Utilization of dietary protein, lipid and carbohydrate by flounder (Paralicthys olivaceus)

  • Although flounder is one of the most important marine fish for aquaculture in Korea, feeding the flounder in commercial farms depends mainly on moist pellet in which over 70% frozen fishes (e.g. frozen horse mackerel) are incorporated in its formulation. Therefore, for further expansion of flounder farming, it is essential to employ practical formulated feeds that can support reasonable growth. Development of nutritionally balanced and cost-effective feeds is dependant on the information about nutritional requirement and feed utilization of the species. Nutrient and energy source in feed are needed for the growth and maintenance of fish. Protein is probably the most important nutrient affecting fish growth and feed cost. Therefore, it is essential to determine the optimum dietary protein level for the growth of fish, both its high proportion in the feed and because it is the main factor in determining feed cost. Dietary energy level is also critical because protein source in the feed is utilized as an energy source when the feed deficient in energy is fed to fish, whereas when the feed excess in energy is fed to fish, feed consumption decreased and resulted in growth reduction due to lack of other necessary nutrients for normal growth. Improper dietary protein, energy levels and/or their ratio will lead to an increase of fish production cost and deterioration of water quality resulting from wasted feed; thus, they are important in formulating commercial feed. Dietary lipids play important roles in providing energy and essential fatty acid for normal growth and survival of fish. Although carbohydrates are not essential nutrients for carnivorous fish, these compounds play important roles as a low-cost energy source for protein sparing and also as a feed binder. Nutrition researches for flounder have identified its requirements of protein, lipid and essential fatty acid, vitamin, and minerals for normal growth. Other studies have also been carried out to investigate the utilization of the protein, lipid and carbohydrate sources. Based on these nutritional information obtained, practical feed formulations have been studied for improve aquaculture production of flounder. The results of the researches on utilization of dietary protein, lipid and carbohydrate by flounder are discussed in this review.
