An Efficient Control Strategy Based Multi Converter UPQC using with Fuzzy Logic Controller for Power Quality Problems

  • A custom power device provides an integrated solution to the present problems that are faced by the utilities and power distribution. In this paper, a new controller is designed which is connected to a multiconverter unified power quality conditioner (MC-UPQC) for improving the power quality issues adopted modified synchronous reference frame (MSRF) theory with Fuzzy logic control (FLC) technique. This newly designed controller is connected to a source in order to compensate voltage and current in two feeders. The expanded concept of UPQC is multi converter-UPQC; this system has a two-series voltage source inverter and one shunt voltage source inverter connected back to back. This configuration will helps mitigate any type of voltage / current fluctuations and power factor correction in power distribution network to improve power quality issues. In the proposed system the power can be conveyed from one feeder to another in order to mitigate the voltage sag, swell, interruption and transient response of the system. The control strategies of multi converter- UPQC are designed based on the modified synchronous reference frame theory with fuzzy logic controller. The fast dynamics response of dc link capacitor is achieved with the help of Fuzzy logic controller. Different types of fault conditions are taken and simulated for the analysis and the results are compared with the conventional method. The relevant simulation and compensation performance analysis of the proposed multi converter-UPQC with fuzzy logic controller is performed.

Real-time ULTC control strategy using the dynamic movement capability of LDC variables of artificial neural network (인공신경회로망의 LDC 변수 동적이동 능력을 이용한 실시간 ULTC 제어전략)

  • This study develops the real time ULTC(Under Load Tap Changer) control strategy with LDC setting values moved dynamically using artificial neural networks. The suggested strategy can improve the ULTC voltage compensation capability by building 2 types of neural networks, ANNs and ANNg. ANNs recognizes the uncompensated MTr sending voltage change caused by the receiving voltage variation. And ANNg dynamically determines the most appropriate ULTC setting valtage chanbe caused by the receiving voltage variation. And ANNg dynamically determines the most appropriate ULTC setting values by recognizing the voltage level obtained from ANNs, and the section load pattern for each time period. In order to evaluate the suggested approach, the ULTC voltage compensation strategy are simulated on a 8 feeder distribution system. Artificial neural networks developed in this study are implemented in FORTRAN language on PC 386.

  • Regenerative energy generated by regenerative braking of DC traction can cause the system malfunction or damage to the rectifier, or malfunction of the power conversion device in power supply system by DC Line voltage rise in feeder line. Regenerative energy storage system using super capacitor is one of the ways to stabilize DC line voltage. In this paper, energy storage system of DC traction system using super-capacitor bank is implemented and using the field measurement data of the station N and the station S on the Line 2, the operation characteristics of line voltage caused by regenerative energy of electric trains are verified. Also, charge/discharge characteristics of super capacitor are verified as well. Thus, we can verify the operation characteristics of super-capacitor bank for regenerative energy storage system installed in DC Traction. And if we can use field measurement data of DC line voltage, we have obtained cost reduction. The stabilization of the system will be improved by measuring the operation characteristics of regenerative energy storage system in certain section operated by DC traction and predicting the capacity and lifetime of super-capacitor.

  • Overhead line voltage of DC railway traction substations has rising or falling characteristics depending on the acceleration and regenerative braking of the subway train loads. The suppression of this irregular fluctuation of the line voltage gives rise to improved energy efficiency of both the railway substation and the trains. This paper presents parameter estimation schemes using the RC circuit model for an overhead line voltage at a 1500V DC electric railway traction substation. A linear artificial neural network with a back-propagation learning algorithm was trained using the measurement data for an overhead line voltage and four feeder currents. The least square estimation method was configured to implement batch processing of these measurement data. These estimation results have been presented and performance analysis has been achieved through raw data simulation.

  • This paper describes distribution characteristics of switching surge voltage in stator windings of induction motor driven by IGBT PWM inverter. To analyze the voltage distribution between the turns and coils of stator winding, equivalent circuit model of induction motor including cable was proposed and high frequency parameter is computed by using finite-element method (FEM). From the electro-magnetic transient program (EMTP) simulation of the whole system for induction motor, feeder cable, and PWM inverter, the variable effect on rising time of the inverter, cable length, and switching frequency on the voltage distribution is also presented. In order to experiment, an induction motor, 380[V], 50[HP], with taps from one phase are built to consider the voltage distribution so that these results can be helpful when filter was designed to remove high dv/dt.

  • There is an increasing interest in research to help overcome the energy crisis that has been focused on energy storage applications in various parts of power systems. Energy storage systems are good at enhancing the reliability or improving the efficiency of a power system by creating a time gap between the generation and the consumption of power. As a contribution to the various applications of storage devices, this paper describes a novel algorithm that determines the power and storage capacity of selected energy storage devices in order to improve upon railroad system efficiency. The algorithm is also demonstrated by means of simulation studies for the Korean railroad lines now in service. A part of this novel algorithm includes the DC railroad powerflow algorithm that considers the mobility of railroad vehicles, which is necessary because the electric railroad system has a distinct distribution system where the location and power of vehicles are not fixed values. In order to derive a more accurate powerflow result, this algorithm has been designed to consider the rail voltage as well as the feeder voltage for calculating the vehicle voltage. By applying the resultant control scheme, the charging or discharging within a specific voltage boundary, energy savings and a substation voltage stabilization using storage devices are achieved at the same time.

  • This paper presents a scheme on the characteristics of induction motor under the combination of linear & non-linear loads at the three phase 4-wire power distribution system. Under the combination operation of single & three phase load, voltage unbalance will be generated and current unbalance will be more severe by the dropped voltage quality. All power electronic converters used in different types of electronic systems can increase harmonic disturbances by injecting harmonic currents directly into the feeder grid of three phase 4-wire. Harmonic current may cause torque to decrease. Motors may also overheat or become noisy and torque oscillation in the rotor can lead to mechanical resonance and vibration.

  • In this study, we are a proposed system that could control a multi-functional welder of the current, voltage of the crater, gas control, the wire feeder's driven, the constant voltage output control, high frequency control, rated current control and the ARC welding control etc., using the mobile-based smart phone. Approximately 90% of user of proposed system are very useful in multi-function welder in their task responded and rest of 10% of the answers don't need it. 30% answered in 90% of the multi-function welding machine according to age group using a smart phone utilizing this "very difficult" at investigated. However, the use of smart phones is gradually lower the user's age group can be seen that effective.

  • In this paper, a new algorithm of Integrated Volt/Var Control (IVVC) is proposed using Volt/Var control for the Distribution Automation System (DAS) based on the modeling of the distributed load and the distributed current. In the proposed, the load flow based on the modeling of the distributed load with Distributed Generation and the distributed current are estimated from constants of four terminals using the measurement of the current and power factor from a Feeder Remote Terminal Unit (FRTU). For Integrated Volt/Var Control (IVVC), the gradient method is applied to find optimal solution for tap and capacity control of OLTC (On-Load Tap Changers), SVR (Step Voltage Regulator), and SC (Shunt Condenser). What is more Volt/Var control method is proposed using moving the tie switch as well as IVVC algorithm using power utility control. In the case studies, the estimation and simulation network have been testified in Matlab Simulink.

  • When a fault occurs on railway feeders it is very important to detect the fault to protect trains and facilities. Because a DC railway system has low feeder voltage, The fault current can be smaller than the current of load starting. So it is important to discriminate between the small fault current and the load starting current. The load starting current increases step by step but the fault current increases at one time. So the type of $\Delta$I/ relay(50F) was developed using the different characteristics between the load starting current and the fault current. The load starting current increases step by step so the time constant of each step is much smaller than that of the fault current. First, to detect faults in DC railway systems, an algorithm using the time constant calculated by the method of least squares is presented in this paper. If a fault occurs on DC railway systems it is necessary to find a fault location to repair the faulted system as soon as possible. The second aim of the paper is to calculate the accurate fault location using Kirchhoff's voltage law.
