Body condition score (BCS) is a useful management tool for distinguishing differences in nutritional needs of cows in the herd. Although it is not always possible to quantify the nutrient content of the feed supplied to the donor cow, the nutritional status can be determined by the BCS. The objective of this study was to evaluate in vivo embryo production, return to estrous of donor and pregnancy rate of recipients following BCS in Hanwoo superovulation. Sixty nine Hanwoo donor cows were flushed on day 7 of estrus cycle with same FSH and artificial insemination by the same technicians. Embryos were recovered on 7 days after the third insemination by flushing the uterus with Embryo Collection Medium. The results obtained were as follows: No differences were observed in the efficiency of superovulation rates regardless of BCS ($${\leq_-}2.0$$, 2.5 to 3.0, and $${\geq_-}3.5$$). The mean number of total embryos was each $5.20{\pm}0.86$, $11.56{\pm}1.04$, and $6.23{\pm}1.07$. The mean number of transferable embryo from $${\leq_-}2.0$$, 2.5 to 3.0, and $${\geq_-}3.5$$ of BCS was $2.60{\pm}0.87$, $7.94{\pm}0.89$, and $4.75{\pm}1.32$, respectively (p<0.05). Return to estrous regardless of donor BCS was no difference. The pregnancy rates of recipient were BCS $${\leq_-}2.0$$ 11.76%, 2.5 to 3.0 40.79%, and $${\geq_-}3.5$$ 11.11%, following transfer of fresh embryos produced in vivo, respectively. These results indicate that if the Hanwoo with BCS 2.5 to 3.3 are used for donor and recipient, the embryo production and the conception rate will be greater.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of a commercial extruded pellet (EP) and raw fish moist pellet (MP) diet on disease prevalence and serum chemistry of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus grown in two commercial-scale aquaculture farms from July to December in 2008. The contents of serum GOT, GPT and glucose in fish fed EP diet (EP group) were higher than those of fish fed the MP diet (MP group). There were no distinct differences in survival rates and mean detection rates of fish pathogens among fish group fed the experimental diets. However, the mean detection rate of fish pathogens in MP group was higher than that of EP group from July to October which are high water temperature season. The dominant pathogens isolated in EP group were Dactylogyrus sp., E. tarda and red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV). On the other hand, Trichodina sp., Streptococcus spp., viral nervous necrosis virus (VNNV) were dominant in MP group.
We explored the possibilities of using the freshwater rotifer Brachionus angularis as a live food for small fishes cultured in fresh- or brackish waters. Brachionus angularis were collected from a reservoir for isolation and laboratory culture. Length and width of the lorica were $102.3{\mu}m$ and $76.6{\mu}m$, respectively, and those of amictic eggs were $64.4{\mu}m\;and\;47.9{\mu}m$, respectively. When their growth rates were examined at six different temperatures, i.e., 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and $40^{\circ}C$, the highest daily growth rate of 0.801 was observed at $35^{\circ}C$, and growth was lower with decreasing temperature. Adaptation to salinity change was evaluated with two different modes of salinity increase: step-wise elevation lasting for short durations of 5 to 30 min or a long duration of 24 h. With the short duration modes, no individuals survived salinity higher than 10 psu, and the number of live individuals did not increase throughout the experiment. However, in the 24-h elevation, the number of individuals increased when salinity was elevated by 1 to 2 psu per day for the first 2 or 3 days, while no increase in number occurred at salinity increments higher than 3 psu per day. In addition, to assess the effect of different diets, four single-component diets (Chlorella vulgaris, Nannochloris sp., baker's yeast, or dry yeast) and three combination diets (C. vulgaris + Nannochloris sp. + baker's yeast + dry yeast; C. vulgaris 70% + baker's yeast 30%; C. vulgaris 30% + baker's yeast 70%) were used. The specific growth rates of B. angularis fed combination diets were higher than those of rotifers fed any single-component diet, with the highest rate of 0.648 in B. angularis fed a mixture of C. vulgaris, Nannochloris sp., baker's yeast, and dry yeast, and the lowest rate of 0.200 in those fed dry yeast only. Our results indicate that the freshwater rotifer B. angularis can be used for seedling production of both freshwater and brackish-water fishes that require small (less than about $120{\mu}m$) live food during their early stages.
This study was conducted to test actual oxygen consumption rates of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) at a commercial scale high density culture tank in the recirculating culture system, with a special emphasis on the oxygen consumption rate of this species with different daily feeding frequencies. Nile tilapia, an average of 400 g and a total wright of 390 kg, were stocked in a circular concrete tank of 2.9 m in diameter and 0.8 m in depth, in a recirculating culture system. The fish were fed commercial diet 1, 2, 5, and 9 times per day between 09:00 h and 19:00 h. feed was evenly supplied where the fish were fed more than once a day. Dissolved oxygen of influent and effluent water was monitored every 50 seconds by a computer with electrodes for 24 hours. The standard metabolic rate of tilapia was $39.31{\pm}4.4mg\;O_2/kg$ fish/hr in the present study. The maximum oxygen consumption was reached between 30 to 50 minutes after feeding. The maximum oxygen consumption levels of 1, 2, 5, and 9 feeding times per day were 161.2, 123.4, 111.1 and 111.1 mg $O_2/kg$ fish/hr, respectively. While the mean oxygen consumption levels of 1, 2, 5, and 9 feeding times per day were $79.9{\pm}21.5,\;81.3{\pm}14.8,\;84.2{\pm}9,9$ and $98,9{\pm}11.0mg\;O_2/kg$ fish/hr, respectively. These results show that oxygen consumption rates are not much different between the feeding frequencies. These results could be used to design to provide desirable oxygen supply system in the recirculating high-density tilapia culture system.

The kinetics of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and water gas shift reactions over a precipitated iron catalyst were studied in a 5 channel fixed-bed reactor. Experimental conditions were changed as follows: synthesis gas $H_2$/CO feed ratios of 0.5~2, reactants flow rate of 60~80 ml/min, and reaction temperature of $255{\sim}275^{\circ}C$ at a constant pressure of 1.5 MPa. The reaction rate of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis was calculated from Eley-Rideal mechanism in which the rate-determining step was the formation of the monomer species (methylene) by hydrogenation of associatively adsorbed CO. Whereas water gas shift reaction rate was determined by the formation of a formate intermediate species as the rate-determining step. As a result, the reaction rates of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis for the hydrocarbon formation and water gas shift for the $CO_2$ production were in good agreement with the experimental values, respectively. Therefore, the reaction rates ($r_{FT}$, $r_{WGS}$, $-r_{CO}$) derived from the reaction mechanisms showed good agreement both with experimental values and with some kinetic models from literature.
As a part of improving the quality for the fraction of the waste plastics pyrolysis oil (WPPO), the recovery of paraffin components contained in the fraction was investigated by dimethylformamide (DMF) equilibrium extraction. The fraction of a distilling temperature of $120{\sim}350^{\circ}C$ recovered from WPPO by the simple distillation and the aqueous solution of DMF were used as a raw material and solvent, respectively. The concentrations of paraffin components ($C_{12}$, $C_{14}$, $C_{16}$ and $C_{18}$) contained in the raffinate decreased by increasing the mass fraction of water in the solvent at an initial state ($y_{w,0}$), whereas, the concentrations of paraffin components contained in the raffinate increased by increasing the mass ratio of the solvent to the feed at an initial state $(S/F)_0$. The concentrations of $C_{12}$, $C_{14}$, $C_{16}$ and $C_{18}$ paraffin components present in the raffinate recovered at $(S/F)_0=10$ were about 1.37, 2.0, 2.46 and 3.16 times higher than those of the raw materials, respectively. Recovery rates (residue rates present in raffinate) of paraffin components rapidly increased with increasing $y_{w,0}$, and decreasing $(S/F)_0$. The raffinate recovered through this study was expected to be used as a renewable energy.
This study addressed the cost structure of metallurgical plants for vanadium recovery or production, which were previously planned or implemented. Vanadium metallurgy consists of several sub-processes such as such as pretreatment, roasting, leaching, precipitation, and filtration, in order to finally produce vanadium pentoxide. Here, lots of costs should be spent for such plants, in which these costs are largely divided into CAPEX (Capital Expenditure) and OPEX (Operational Expenditure). As a result, the capacities (feed input rates) and vanadium contents are various along the target projects for this study. However, final production rates and grades of vanadium pentoxide showed relatively small differences. In addition, a noticeable correlation is found between capacities and specific operating costs, in that a steadily decreasing trend is described with a non-linear curve with around -0.3 power. Therefore, for the plant capacity below 100,000 tons per year, the specific operating cost rapidly decreases as the capacity increases, whereas the cost remains relatively stable in the range of 0.6 to 1.2 million tons per year of the capacity. From a technical perspective, effective optimization of the metallurgical process plant can be achieved by improving vanadium recovery rate in the pre-treatment and/or roasting-leaching processes. Finally, the results of this study should be updated through future research with on-going field verification and further detailed cost analysis.
Optimal conditions for the in situ immobilization of lipase in aldehyde-silica packed columns, via reductive amination, were investigated. A reactant mixture, containing lipase and sodium borohydride (NaCBH), was recirculated through an aldehyde-silica packed column, such that the covalent bonding of the lipase, via amination between the amine group of the enzyme and the aldehyde terminal of the silica, and the reduction of the resulting imine group by NaCBH, could occur inside the bed, in situ. Mobile phase conditions in the ranges of pH $7.0{\~}7.8$, temperatures between $22{\~}28^{circ}C$ and flow rates from $0.8{\~}1.5\;BV/min$ were found to be optimal for the in situ immobilization, which routinely resulted in an immobilization of more than 70 mglipase/g-silica. Also, the optimal ratio and concentration for feed reactants in the in situ immobilization: mass ratio [NaCBH]/[lipase] of 0.3, at NaCBH and lipase concentrations of 0.75 and 2.5 g/L, respectively, were found to display the best immobilization characteristics for concentrations of up to 80 mg-lipase/g-silica, which was more than a 2-fold increase in immobilization compared to that obtained by batch immobilization. For tributyrin hydrolysis, the in situ immobilized lipase displayed lower activity per unit mass of enzyme than the batch-immobilized or free lipase, while allowing more than a $45\%$ increase in lipase activity per unit mass of silica compared to batch immobilization, because the quantity of the immobilization on silica was augmented by the in situ immobilization methodology used in this study.

Results obtained from this research showed that the anaerobic contact process was applicable to pear waste with COD removal efficiencies of up to $95\%$ depending on conditions, provided ammonium and phosphate salts were added as well as other nutrients, present in the commercial fertilizer, Milorganite or in yeast extract. These latter materials were required in minimum concentrations of 5 and 1.5 g/L, respectively, in the feed independent of HRT and volatile solids loading rate, with part of the effect due to the mineral fraction. Digestion was satisfactory over the whole range of volatile solids loading rates and liquid retention time of 30 to 0.5 days tested, although treatment efficiency dropped off noticeably between 1 and 0.5 day liquid retention time because of poorer flocculation and separation of anaerobic bacteria. Settling of anaerobic bacteria including methane producing bacteria was related to settling of mixed liquor suspended solids only at 1 to 5 days liquid retention times, at other liquid retention times anaerobic microorganism settled markedly less efficiently than mixed liquor suspended solids. Further studies are being made to provide information of practical and basic interest. Data on the composition of the active fraction of yeast extract might solve many practical nutrient problems encountered with the anaerobic contact process and improve its economics. Further improvement in the flocculation and settling of anaerobic bacteria as well as other bacteria would improve overall performance and allow the use of shorter liquid retention times with dilute waste. Knowledge about the numbers of methane formers present would allow a degree of understanding and control of the process not presently attainable.
The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of a mixture of functional oils (Essential, Oligo Basics Agroind. Ltda) on performance response of chickens challenged with coccidiosis and the determination of apparent metabolizable energy (AME), nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn), the coefficients of protein and ether extract digestibility and intestinal morphology of broilers fed with diets containing Essential. In Exp. 1, a completely randomized design (CRD) was used, with one control diet without Essential inclusion with coccidiosis (Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria maxima, and Eimeria tenella) challenged birds and two different inclusion rates of Essential (1.5 kg/ton and 2 kg/ton) with coccidiosis-challenged and non-challenged birds for each inclusion rate, using 10 replicates and 50 birds per experimental unit. After 7 d of coccidiosis challenge, the livability was approximately 10% lower (p<0.05) for the control group. Intestinal lesion scores were lower (p<0.05) in the anterior intestine and the cecum for the chickens supplemented. Feed efficiency and growth rate were improved in birds supplemented with Essential (p<0.05) before the coccidiosis challenge and during the first 7 d post infection. In Exp. 2, a CRD was used, with one control diet without Essential inclusion and one diet with inclusion of Essential (1.5 kg/ton), using nine replications and 33 chicks per pen. The diets with Essential yielded approximately 4% higher AME (p = 0.003) and $AME_n$ (p = 0.001). Essential supplementation increased villus height in the jejunum on d 14 (p<0.05). Villus height:crypt depth ratio for the supplemented birds was larger (p<0.05) in the jejunum on d 7, larger (p<0.05) in the jejunum and ileum on d 14. In conclusion, these functional oils improved the energy utilization and the livability and decreased lesions caused by coccidiosis in supplemented birds.
