Liquid-liquid extractions by use of microporous hollow fiber modules are fast compared with conventional extraction equipment because of the large surface area per volume. In these modules, the extractant and feed can be contacted at high speed and two flows are completely independent, so there are no problems with loading and channeling. In this paper, it was investigated the extraction selectivities for liquid-liquid extraction of Fe(II) and Ni(II) from dilute aqueous solution into TOA (tri-n-octylamine) and EHPNA (bis(2-ethylhexyle)hydrogenphosphite) as organic extractants by using the hydrophobic hollow fiber module. To determine the rate controlling step for mass transfer in hollow fibers, we also examined the effect of inside and outside flow rates of the hollow fiber module. From these experiments, we identified for the extraction of system with high partition coefficient in hydrophobic hollow fibers, mass transfer in the inside aqueous feed dominated the overall mass transfer, and in this paper, correlation between $K_w$ and $v_t$ was obtained as $K_w{\frac{d}{D}}=6.22\(\frac{d^2v_t}{LD}\)^{1/3}$ On the other hand, for the system with low partition coefficient, the resistance in the inside of hollow fibers was much less than membrane resistance because the extraction was not simple in the micropore. Thus, for systems with high partition coefficients, hydrophobic hollow fibers would be a better choice.

In order to determine the influence of nitrogen on agronomic characters, forage yield and quality, Jeju Italian millet(Setaria italica Beauvis) was grown on the volcanic ash soil at the Experimental Farm of Cheju national university under the six levels of nitrogen rates (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250kg/ha) from May 1, 2000 to August 25, 2000. Days to heading was delayed 92∼98 days as nitrogen rate increased. Plant height was 96cm at 0kg N/ha. as N rate increased, grew gradually, was 134cm at 200kg N/ha, 135cm at 250kg N/ha, and was not significantly affected between the two plots. Fresh forage, dry matter, crude protein and TDN yield increased 18.88∼42.82MT/ha, 8.45 ∼12.25MT/ha, 0.76∼1.59MT/ha and 4.32∼6.79MT/ha, respectively, as the increasing of N rate, but were not significant between 200kg N/ha and 250kg N/ha. As N rate increased, crude protein, crude fat, NFE and TDN content increased 9.0∼13.0%, 1.4∼1.7%, 9% and 51.1∼55.5%, respectively, but crude ash and crude fiber content decreased 8.7∼8.2% and 34.9∼30.2%, respectively.
An experiment was conducted to assess the effects of dietary 3,5,3'-triiodo-L-thyronine ($T_3$) at 0, 10, 20, 50, 100 ppm on growth and survival rate in juvenile black seabream held at $27.9{\pm}1.1^{\circ}C$ for 50 days. Fish were fed the $T_{3}$ experimental diet for 4() days by hand to satiation in $2{\~}4$ times per day. After 50 days period, food intake rate (${\%}$), feed efficiency (${\%}$), survival rate (${\%}$), growth of weight and length (specific growth rates), and condition factor were measured. Food intake rate was inversely related to the dietary $T_{3}$ level. But feed efficiency was not changed by $T_{3}$ level. $T_{3}$ slightly improved survival rate of larvae. Survival rate of larvae from 100 ppm was significantly higher than that of fish from control. Dietary $T_{3}$ influenced growth in length and weight. Growth of black seabream fed a diet containing 10 ppm of $T_{3}$ was significantly higher than that of fish fed control. However 100 ppm of $T_{3}$ induced the inhibition for length and weight growth. The condition factor was inversely related to the dietary $T_{3}$ content.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different processing of rice on rumen fermentation in in vitro and in situ experiments. Different processing treatments (extruding, roasting, and steaming) were used in this study and all treatments were ground through a cyclone mill (Foss, Hillerød, Denmark) fitted with a 1 mm screen. Non-treated rice was considered to a control substrate. Then, all treatments were used in in vitro and in situ experiments. Total gas production and dry matter digestibility in control were lower than any other treatment at all incubation times (P<0.01). The lowest ammonia nitrogen ($NH_3-N$) concentration was observed in control among treatments at 6, 12, and 24 h incubation (P<0.01). Extruding had a highest total volatile fatty acids (VFA) concentration at 6, 12 h incubation (P<0.01) and Steaming exhibited a highest total VFA at 24 h (P<0.01). The lowest total VFA concentration was observed in control at 6, 12, and 24 h (P<0.01). In an in situ, The highest value of soluble fraction, degradation rates, effective degradability was observed in extruding (P<0.01). It was considered that feed processing increased dry matter digestibility, total VFA concentration, and decreased pH as well as $NH_3-N$ concentration indicating that processing may increase nutrient degradation of rice in the rumen.

This study was conducted to compare the growth performance and carcass evaluation of Jeju native cattle (JNC) and its crossbreds (CBK = 25 JNC: 50 Charolais: 25 Brahman and BCBK = 62.5 JNC: 25 Charolais: 12.5 Brahman) fed for a short fattening period. Eight male calves each of JNC (80.$40{\pm}10$), CBK ($113.50{\pm}12.3$), and BCBK ($100.3{\pm}9.5$) were weaned at 4 month of age and were fed similar diets for 18 months of their age. All animals were fed a growing ration until 12 months of age and thereafter switched to a fattening ration for a period of 6 months. Final body weight (BW) and BW gain were significantly higher in CBK and BCBK compared with JNC. The CBK and BCBK gained 27.42% and 25.99% more BW, respectively, compared with JNC. The CBK and BCBK animals consumed significantly less DM than JNC to gain a unit of BW. Body weight gain, DM intake and feed conversion efficiency were similar between CBK and BCBK. Weight of hot and cold carcass, ribs, boneless meat and Longissimus dorsi muscle area were significantly different among JNC and its crossbreds. The heaviest carcass was observed in CBK followed by BCBK and JNC. Carcass, chest and femur lengths were greater in CBK and BCBK compared with JNC. Chest width, chest depth and hip width were similar in JNC and its crossbreds. Femur width was significantly greater in CBK compared with BCBK and JNC. Femur depth and chest girth were significantly greater in CBK and BCBK compared with JNC. Weight and fat yield in different carcass cuts were greater in crossbreds compared to JNC. Percent moisture, crude ash, and crude protein of meat were similar in JNC and its crossbreds. Percent crude fat in beef was significantly greater in JNC compared with its crossbreds. Beef shear force value, percent water holding capacity, juiciness and tenderness were significantly greater for JNC compared to its crossbreds. In conclusion, CBK and BCBK have shown greater growth rates and produced heavier carcasses with good degree of fatness when compared with JNC.
Husk separator is an indispensable equipment in rice milling plants. However, any basic research on the designing and operating criteria of the husk separator have rarely been conducted in Korea. According to the survey results reported recently, grain loss occurs in the process of rice husk separation at custom rice milling plants in Korea and the performance of husk separator has also not been identified. With this regard this study was conducted with a typical commercial husk separator to investigate the effect of the operational factors such as feed rate, blower speed and opening ratio on the velocity distribution in the air duct and the performance of the separator. The results are summerized as follows: 1. The average wind velocity in the primary air duct increased linearly with the blower rpm and the size of air inlet port in both cases of double type and single type operations. 2. The coefficient of variation in the horizontal wind velocities in the primary air duct was the minimum when the opening ratio was 0.22 ($0.052m^2$ of air inlet port) in both cases of single type and double type operations regardless of the blower speeds used in this test. The average wind velocity at the upper part of air duct was greater by 2-5 m/s than the velocity at the bottom part in double type operation. In case of single type operation, however, the average velocity in the middle part was greater than the upper or bottom part when the opening ratio was greater than 0.74. 3. The relationship between the overall effectiveness of separation(Ed for double type and Es for single type) and the average wind velocity (Va) in the primary air duct was expressed in the following quadratic functions. $$Ed=-190.84+106.18Va-10.052Va^2$$ ($r^2$ = 0.97782) $$Es=-223.76+106.23Va-9.1935Va^2$$ ($r^2$ = 0.97029) The average wind velocity required to obtain the overall effectiveness of separation more than 80% ranged from 4.04 m/sec to 5.84 m/sec in case of double type operation, and from 4.70 m/sec to 6.20 m/sec in case of single type. 4. An optimum wind velocity can be obtained with an increase in the blower speed or the size of air inlet port as presented in Figure 8. There was a tendency that the faster the blower speed, the narrower the control range of the air inlet port. 5. The feed rates (1850kg/hr and 2100kg/hr) adopted in this experiment did not bring about a significant difference in both the overall effectiveness of separation and the power consumption. 6. The energy consumption increased cubically with the blower speed but linearly with the size of the air inlet port. On the basis of the results described in items 1, 3, and 6, it would be more economic to adjust the size of the air inlet port larger with a relatively low blower speed than to adjust the size smaller with a relatively high speed.
This investigation was conducted to study the effect of dietary formic acid (FA) and propionic acid (PA) mixture on inhibitory effect of Salmonella pullorum in layer chicks. Nine groups of one day-old layer chicks in addition to positive and negative controls, were fed with acids treated feed containing mixture of different acids concentrations, from 0.5% and 0.5% up to 1.5% and 1.5% FA and PA, respectively. Positive and negative controls were fed untreated feed. Groups except the negative control were challenged orally on day three with $10^4$ cfu/ml S. pullorum. Cloacal swabs were taken at three successive days and at 7, 14 and 21 days of challenge. After 1, 2 and 3 weeks after challenge, 4 chicks from each group were sacrificed and crop and cecal contents were examined for S. pullorum and pH. The numbers of S. pullorum positive culture from the excretion of all treated groups except groups treated with mixture of 0.5% and 0.5%, 1% and 0.5%, 0.5% and 1% FA and PA decreased significantly (p<0.05) as compared with the positive control. The mortality rates of all treated groups except the group treated with 0.5% FA and 0.5% PA were decreased significantly (p<0.05) as compared with the positive control. The treatment significantly (p<0.05) lowered the pH of the crop and cecal contents in all groups except the group treated with 0.5% FA and 0.5% PA as compared with the control. Also, the treatment significantly (p<0.05) lowered the pH of the crop and cecal contents in all groups after three weeks of treatment compared to the first and second weeks. The treatments significantly (p<0.05) lowered the frequency of S. pullorum recovery from crop and cecal contents in six groups treated with 1.5 and 0.5, 1 and 1, 1.5 and 1, 0.5 and 1.5, 1 and 1.5, 1.5% and 1.5% FA and PA respectively. These results indicate that addition of FA and PA mixture in a total concentration of 2 % or more to the diet of newly hatched infected layer chicks significantly decreases the crop and cecal colonization by S. pullorum and significantly decreases S. pullorum fecal excretion and reduced the chick mortality rate.
In the synthesis of water-based polyurethane using self-emulsification process, after being neutralized, polyurethane pre-polymers containing ionic pendant groups are dispersed by simple convective mixing. Preparation of dispersion is followed by chain extension reaction, which is considered as important step for growth of the molecular weight of polyurethane. In this work, pH variations in the aqueous phase were monitored during the chain extension process in the presence of water-soluble diamines. The optimum degree of chain extension and the average particle size in the polyurethane dispersions were examined with varying ionic pendent group contents, type of chain extenders, and feed rate of chain extenders, The initial pH value in the aqueous phase linearly increased and the optimum chain extension point could be obtained from the intersection of two linear lines having different slopes, All average particle sizes before chain extension reaction were almost same, however, the final average particle size increased as feed rates of chain extenders increased, In addition, as the ionic pendant group contents increased, the particle size decreased since the hydrophilicity and hydrodynamic volume increased. As carbon numbers of the chain extenders increased, the final particle size increased significantly. From the results, it was concluded that the chain extension reaction took place among the particles not only in a particle.
The chestnut brown chafer, Adoretus tenuimaculatus Waterhouse, is serious insect pests in golf courses. Adults feed on the leaves of latifoliate trees but larvae feed on roots of turfgrases such as bentgrass, Agrostis spp. Damage of A. tenuimaculatus larvae was observed at the Jinju golf club which showed damage symptom on perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne in tees and fairways in July, 2000. Damaged turf by A. tenuimaculatus larvae became yellowish and wilted. Symptom of laval damage of A. tenuimaculatus was similar to summer depression in warm season turfgrasses but not recovered by irrigation when Korean isolates of entomopathogenic nematodes were evaluated for the control of A. tenuimaculatus larvae in laboratory and field as a possible biological control agent. The nematodes used were Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Jeju strain, Hererorhabditis sp. Gyeongsan strain, Steinernema carpocapsae Pocheon strain, S.glaseri Dongrea strain, and S.longicaudum Nonsan strain. In the laboratory test H.bacreriophora Jeju strain and Heterorhabditis sp. Gyeongsan strain were highly effective for 3rd instars with 95% mortality. In the field test reduction rates of A.tenuimaculatus larvae were higher by ranging from 28 to 57% by H. bacteriophora Jeju strain, Heterorhabditis sp. Gyeongsan strain, and S.carpocapsae Pocheon strain compared to 7% by natural cause.
Twelve multiparous Holstein dairy cows in mid-lactation were selected for a replicated $4{\times}4$ Latin square design with a $2{\times}2$ factorial arrangement to investigate the effects of corn and soybean meal (SBM) types on rumen fermentation, N metabolism and lactation performance in dairy cows. Two types of corn (dry ground [DGC] and steam-flaked corn [SFC]) and two types of SBM (solvent-extracted and heat-treated SBM) with different ruminal degradation rates and extents were used to formulate four diets with the same basal ingredients. Each period lasted for 21 days, including 14 d for adaptation and 7 d for sample collection. Cows receiving SFC had a lower dry matter (DM) and total N intake than those fed DGC. However, the milk yield and milk protein yield were not influenced by the corn type, resulting in higher feed and N utilization efficiency in SFC-fed cows than those receiving DGC. Ruminal acetate concentrations was greater and total volatile fatty acids concentrations tended to be greater for cows receiving DGC relative to cows fed SFC, but milk fat content was not influenced by corn type. The SFC-fed cows had lower ruminal ammonia-N, less urea N in their blood and milk, and lower fecal N excretion than those on DGC. Compared with solvent-extracted SBM-fed cows, cows receiving heat-treated SBM had lower microbial protein yield in the rumen, but similar total tract apparent nutrient digestibility, N metabolism measurements, and productivity. Excessive supply of metabolizable protein in all diets may have caused the lack of difference in lactation performance between SBM types. Results of the present study indicated that increasing the energy degradability in the rumen could improve feed efficiency, and reduce environmental pollution.
