  • This study investigated the growth of juvenile mandarin fish Siniperca scherzeri, reared at high water temperatures. Feed-trained juvenile fish were reared at four water temperatures: 27, 29, 31, and $33^{\circ}C$. The fish were fed to apparent satiation twice daily using pelleted diet. After 10 weeks of feeding trial, the survival exceeded 98% in all groups. The weight gain of fish reared at $31^{\circ}C$ was higher than for fish reared at the other temperatures. The feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of fish reared at 29 and $31^{\circ}C$ were higher than for the fish reared at 27 and $33^{\circ}C$. The daily feed intake of fish reared at 27 and $33^{\circ}C$ was higher than for the 29 and $31^{\circ}C$ groups. The whole body moisture content of fish reared at $33^{\circ}C$ was higher than in the $27^{\circ}C$ group. The whole body crude protein and lipid contents of fish reared at $27^{\circ}C$ were higher than in the $33^{\circ}C$ group. The results indicate that suitable rearing water temperature was $31^{\circ}C$ for optimal growth and feed efficiency of juvenile mandarin fish under the experimental conditions.

  • This study was performed to develop a hot water boiler system with small scale automatic rice hull furnace for the multi-purpose use in the farm. For the experiment a prototype hot water boiler system with rice hull furnace was fabricated, which was equipped with automatic hull feeder, igniter and ash removal device. Optimum operational conditions of the prototype: system were analyzed. The results arc summarized as follows. 1. The temperature measured right above the burning surface should be higher than $500^{\circ}C$ combustion. 2. The top zone of the combustion chamber was the most suitable location of the thermocouple to pick up the control temperature for the automatic operation of the rice hull furnace. 3. The content of carbon monoxide in the flue gas was increased with the filling height of burning material but it was less than 0.3 percent in volume in this experiment. When the filling height was expressed as the ratio of rice hull feed rate to the volume of the combustion chamber above the burning surface, the optimum ratio was about $150kg/m^3-h$. 4. The combustion efficiency of the prototype was higher than 95 percent when the feed rate was 1.1 to 2.3 kg/h and moisture content of rice hull was 22.4 percent (w.b.) or less. 5. It was estimated that the optimum operational conditions of the system were 1.3 to 2.0 kg/h in feed rate, 70 to 100 percent in excess air and 500 to $510^{\circ}C$ in control temperature. 6. The efficiency of coil heal exchanger increased with a decrease in feed rate of rice hull. When the rice hull feed rates were 1.1, 1.7 and 2.3 kg/h, the efficiencies of coil heat exchanger were about 34, 30 and 25 percent and heat transfer rates were 5.7, 7.6 and 8.8 MJ/h, respectively. When the flat plate heat exchanger was used in addition to the coil heat exchanger, the efficiency of the heat exchanger system increased to 48 percent.

  • The objective of this study is to assess the impact of spray drying conditions on medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) loading, solubility, and release of an MCT-loaded solid self-emulsifying system in a water-insoluble oily substance. MCT-loaded solid self-emulsifying systems are prepared by spray drying with SDS and calcium silicate. The effects of inlet temperature (60, 80, or 100℃) and feed solution composition (0, 10, 50, 90, or 100% ethanol) on physicochemical properties of MCT-loaded solid self-emulsifying systems are studied. The inlet temperature significantly affects the water solubility of MCT. Moreover, the feed solution composition significantly affects water solubility, release rate, and MCT loading. The MCT-loaded solid self-emulsifying system obtained at 60℃ using 90% ethanol feed solution shows the best physicochemical properties among the synthesized products and exhibits better water solubility (4.43 ± 0.44 vs. 0 ㎍/mL) and release (94.4 ± 1.6 vs. 32.8 ± 7.4%, 60 min) than a commercial product. Furthermore, the MCT-loaded solid self-emulsifying system shows an excellent emulsion droplet size (approximately 230 nm).

  • In this work, desalination experiments were performed on vacuum membrane distillation (VMD). Process parameters such as feed flow rate, vacuum degree on permeate side, feed bulk temperature and feed salt concentration were optimized using sensitivity analysis and Taguchi method. The optimum values of process parameters were found to be 2 lpm of feed flow rate, $60^{\circ}C$ of feed bulk temperature, 5.5 kPa of permeate-side pressure and 5000 ppm of salt concentration. The permeate flux at these conditions was obtained as $26.6kg/m^2{\cdot}hr$. The rejection of salt in permeate was found to be 99.7%. The percent contribution of various process parameters using ANOVA results indicated that the most important parameter is feed bulk temperature with its contribution of 95%. The ANOVA results indicate that the percent contribution of permeate pressure gets increased to 5.384% in the range of 2 to 7 kPa as compared to 0.045% in the range of 5.5 to 7 kPa.

  • In this study, to determine the optimum fermentation process for the feed production of food wastes and estimate the practical value of fermented feed using kudzu creeper and sawdust as bulking agent. This study considered initial C/N ratio control as the fermentation process variables. The result are summarized as follows. Minimum water contents of byproducts in the fermentation feed production showed 39%(kudzu), 37%(sawdust) at the C/N ratio 25 and 45%(kudzu, sawdust) at the C/N ratio 35. Temperature variations in the fermentation feed production at the C/N ratio 25 indicated $68^{\circ}C$(kudzu), $70^{\circ}C$(sawdust). Optimum condition of fermentation process of water content, C/N ratio and permeability (porous structure of the mixture). For optimum fermentation gravitationally dewatered garbage, the proper mixing ratios of kudzu(moisture contents : 17.3%) and sawdust(moisture contents : 13.2%) were 41% and 39%, respectively. Major biological reaction in the aerobic fermentation feed production occurred during 12~24hrs.

  • In order to investigate applicability for 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) produced by esterification of 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol(TFEA) and methacrylic acid(MA) using pervaporation membrane, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite membranes were prepared with glutaraldehyde(GA) onto porous polyethersulfone(PES) support. The degree of crosslinking and thickness of PVA coating layer were analyzed by swelling test and SEM(scanning electron microscopy), respectively. Pervaporation test was done with two feed mixures; TFEA/water, MA/water. The pervaporation data were obtained as a function of content of crosslinking agent, feed composition, and operating temperature, respectively. In case of TFEA-water(90/10 wt%) feed mixture at $80^{\circ}C$, the optimized membrane showed the high permeation flux of 1.5 $kg/m^2hr$ and separation factor of 320. In case of MA-water(90/10 wt%) feed mixture, the membranealso showed high permeation flux of 2.3 $kg/m^2hr$ and separation factor of 740 in same conditions.

  • This study investigated the microbiological changes and distribution of bacteria producing enzyme in order to change food wastes to animal feed during 6 days at room temperature. Food wastes were divided as follows: one is untreated food wastes containing 80% water content and another wastes containing 40% water content adiusted by wheat bran. During the fermentation of food wastes, Lactobacillus sp. and Streptococcus sp. were grown the top position among investigated microorganisms in both of food wastes. Numbers of total microorganisms were much more than untreated wastes during fermentation of flood wastes with 40% water content. But, Streptococcus sp. and Enterobacteriaceae from 4 to 6 days were not detected in treated wastes with 40% water contents. This fact indicated that the adiustment of water content in food waste was effective in fermentation. However, the numbers of microorganisms producing pretense were low in both treated and untreated food wastes. These results suggested that flood wastes should be treated as food wastes with 40% water content to maintain a lot of fermentative microorganisms such as Lactobacillus sp., Streptococcus sp. and yeasts together with pretense to make final animal feed.

  • The experiment was conducted t determine the effects of water temperature and daily feeding rate on Koran rockfish growth. The first experiment was carried out to know the growth of the fish in the different water temperature. The second experiment was carried out to know the effects of feeding rate of the fish. In the first experiment, feed efficiency was unaffected by the different water temprature 12, 15 and $18^{\circ}C$, but feed intake and growth rate were affected by the water temperature. Feed intake and growth rate of the fish reared in $15^{\circ}C$ were higher than those of the other groups. In the second experiment, feed efficiency was unaffected by feeding rate except the starve group. Daily growth rate of the fish fed 1.0% diet/BW or more. HSI, VSI, condition factor, GOT, GPT, TG, GL and Ht of fed groups were unaffected by the feeding rate in the experiment. Absoption ratios of protein and lipid were not different with the different feeding rates in fed fish groups. These results indicate that the optimum daily feeding rate of yearling Korean rockfish is about 70-80% of satiation rate.

  • The objective of this study was to examine the effect of dietary supplementation of taurine for juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) at low water temperature ($16.4{\pm}0.36^{\circ}C$). Fish meal (FM)-based diet was used as the control diet. Four other experimental diets were prepared by adding taurine to FM-based diet at 0.25, 0.50, 1.00, and 1. 50% (T1, T2, T3, and T4, respectively). Each experimental diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish (initial mean body weight, 19.5 g) for 10 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, growth performance and feed utilization, hematological parameters, non-specific immune responses, whole-body proximate composition, and liver mRNA expression of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) were investigated. Feed conversion ratio was significantly reduced while protein efficiency ratio was significantly increased in taurine-supplemented groups. Hematocrit and hemoglobin were also significantly increased while plasma cholesterol levels were decreased in taurine-supplemented groups than those in the control group. Nitroblue-tetrazolium, myeloperoxidase and lysozyme activities, and plasma immunoglobulin level were significantly increased by taurine supplementation. These results suggest that dietary taurine supplementation is effective in improving growth performances, feed utilization, and innate immunity of olive flounder in low water temperature season.
