  • Radical and ion densities in a $CF_4$plasma have been calculated as a function of input power density, gas pressure and feed gas flow rate using simple 0 dimensional global model. Fluorine atom is found to be the most abundant neutral particle. Highly fragmented species such as CF and $CF^+$ become dominant neutral and ionic radical at the high power condition. As the pressure increase, ion density increases but ionization rate decreases due to the decrease in electron temperature. The fractional dissociation of $CF_4$feed gas decreases with pressure after increasing at the low pressure range. Electron density and temperature are almost independent of flow rate within calculation conditions studied. The fractional dissociation of $CF_4$monotonically decreases with flow rate, which results in increase in $CF_3$and decrease in CF density. The calculation results show that the $SiO_2$etch selectivity improvement correlates to the increase in the relative density of fluorocarbon ion and neutral radicals which has high C/F ratio.

  • We make a studyof the hydrogen permeability and chemical stability of $Nb_{56}Ti_{23}Ni_{21}$ metal alloy membrane. For this purpose, we produced the $Nb_{56}Ti_{23}Ni_{21}$ membrane which has 10 mm diameter and 0.5 mm thick, and experiment the hydrogen transport properties under two kinds of feed gas ($H_2$ 100%; $H_2$ 60% + $CO_2$ 40%) at $450^{\circ}C$C with variation of absolute pressure. The maximum hydrogen permeation flux was $5.58mL/min/cm^2$ in the absolute pressure 3 bar under pure hydrogen. And each case of feed gases about gas composition, the permeation fluxes were satisfied with Sievert's law, and the hydrogen permeation flux decreased with decrease of hydrogen partial pressure irrespective of temperature and pressure. After permeation test, we experiment the stability and durability of $Nb_{56}Ti_{23}Ni_{21}$ alloy membrane for carbon dioxide by XRD analysis.

  • The aim of the present study was to determine whether brain corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and a new peptide, urocortin (UCN) have a direct action in brain mechanisms controlling feed, water and salt intake in sheep. We gave a continuous intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion of the peptide at a small dose of $5{\mu}g/0.2ml/hr$ for 98.5 hrs from day 1 to day 5 in sheep not exposed to stress. Feed and water intake during ICV infusion of CRF or UCN decreased significantly compared to those during artificial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) infusion. NaCl intake during infusion of CRF or UCN was the same as that during CSF infusion. Mean carotid arterial blood pressure (MAP) and heart rate during ICV infusion of CRF or UCN were not significantly different from that during CSF infusion. On the other hand, the plasma glucose concentration during ICV infusion of CRF or UCN tended to be higher than that during CSF infusion. These observations indicate that decreased feed intake induced by CRF and UCN infusion is not mediated by the activation of both the pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. The results suggested that brain CRF and UCN act directly in brain mechanisms controlling ingestive behavior to decrease feed and water intake, but do not alter salt intake in sheep.

  • Smart water grid is a water network with communication to save water and energy using various water resources. In smart water grid, water product from the various sources can be blended to be supplied to end-users. The product water blending was reported by literatures while feed water blending has been rarely reported so far. In this work, a commercial reverse osmosis (RO) system design software provided by a membrane manufacturer was used to elucidate the effect of feed water blending on the performance of seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant. Fresh water from exisiting water resource was assumed to be blended to seawater to decrease salt concentration of the RO feed water. The feed water blending can simplify the RO system from double to single pass and decrease seawater intake amount, the unit prices of the RO system components including high pressure pump, and operation risk. Due to the increase in RO plant capacity with the feed water blending, however, the RO membrane area and total power consumption increase at higher water blending rates. Therefore, a specific benefit-cost analysis should be carried out to apply the feed water blending to SWRO plants.

  • Pressurized membrane module systems, including hollow fiber type of Microfiltration (MF) and Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are being increasingly used in drinking water treatment due to their high removal efficiency of pathogen. However, when fibers are damaged in pressurized membrane system, the pathogen will be able to penetrate the membrane. Therefore, it is essential to guarantee the regulatory requirements for water quality by an effective on-line or off-line condition integrity monitoring methods. Recently, pressure decay test (PDT) which is one of membrane integrity tests has been reflected to drinking water treatment plants using pressurized membrane module. In this paper, three different method were used to perform PDT and three different sensitivity values were analyzed through experiments. Three types of direct integrity test methods were applied to pressure feed side, filtrate side and bidirectional pressure decay test. The results of these experiments show that the sensitivity was increasing when the volume of pressurized gas was decreasing. The sensitivity is inversely proportional to the gas volume. Furthermore, it is desirable to increase pressure difference between feed side and permeate side in order to achieve higher sensitivity in the PDT by membrane damage.

  • The influence of co-existing gases on the hydrogen permeation was studied through a Pd-coated $V_{53}Ti_{26}Ni_{21}$ alloy membrane. The hydrogen permeation characteristics of Pd-coated $V_{53}Ti_{26}Ni_{21}$ alloy membrane have been investigated in the pressure range 1-3 bar under pure hydrogen and hydrogen mixture gas with carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide at $450^{\circ}C$. Preliminary hydrogen permeation experiments have been confirmed that hydrogen flux was $5.36mL/min/cm^2$ for a Pd-coated $V_{53}Ti_{26}Ni_{21}$ alloy membrane (thick: 0.5 mm) using pure hydrogen as the feed gas. In addition, hydrogen fluxes were 4.46, 5.20, $3.91mL /min/cm^2$ for$V_{53}Ti_{26}Ni_{21}$ alloy membrane using $H_2/CO_2$, $H_2/CO$ and $H_2/CO_2/CO$ as the feed gas respectively. Therefore, the hydrogen permeation flux decreased with decrease of hydrogen partial pressure irrespective of temperature and pressure when $H_2/CO_2$, $H_2/CO$ and $H_2/CO_2/CO$ mixture applied as feed gas respectively and permeation fluxes were satisfied with Sievert's law in different feed conditions. It was found from XRD results after permeation test that the Pd-coated $V_{53}Ti_{26}Ni_{21}$ alloy membrane had good stability and durability for various mixtures feeding condition.

  • The influence of co-existing gases on the hydrogen permeation without sweep gas was studied through a Pd-coated $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ alloy membrane. Membranes have been investigated in the pressure range 1.5-8.0 bar under pure hydrogen, hydrogen-carbon dioxide and hydrogen-carbon monoxide gas mixture without sweep gas at $400^{\circ}C$. Preliminary hydrogen permeation experiments without sweep gas have been confirmed that hydrogen flux was $40.7mL/min/cm^2$ for a Pd-coated $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ alloy membrane (thick : 0.5 mm) using pure hydrogen as the feed gas. In addition, hydrogen flux was $21.4mL/min/cm^2$ for $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ alloy membrane using $H_2/CO_2$ as the feed gas. The hydrogen permeation flux decreased with decrease of hydrogen partial pressure irrespective of pressure when $H_2/CO_2$and $H_2/CO$mixture applied as feed gas respectively and permeation fluxes were satisfied with Sievert's law in different feed conditions. It was found from XRD, SEM/EDX results after permeation test that the Pd-coated $V_{99.8}B_{0.2}$ alloy membrane had good stability and durability for various mixtures feeding condition.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of the counter-pressure setting and the roller speed of a rice whitening machine on the head rice recovery. milling capacity and milling efficiency, and also to find out the optimum operational conditions of the machine. The radial pressure inside the whitening chamber and the outlet axial pressure were measured to study their relationships with the head rice recovery, milling capacity and milling efficiency. The results of the study are summarized as follows. (1) The most important factor in rice whitening was the counter-pressure setting. It significantly affected the head rice recovery. (2) The roller speed significant affected the milling capacity and milling efficiency , but it did not affected the head rice recovery. (3) Both the radial pressure and the outlet axial pressure were affected by the counter-pressure setting but not by the roller speed. Both of them increased almost linearly with the counter-pressure setting. There was a significant correlation between the radial pressure and the outlet axial pressure. (4) The flow rate through the whitening chamber when the feed gate was fully opened increased with the roller speed, but it was not affected by the counter-pressure setting. (5) The head rice recovery decreased as the counter-pressure setting increased , but it was not affected by the roller speed. The reason could be explained by the fact that the radical pressure increased only with the counter-pressure setting. (6) The milling capacity increased with the counter-pressure setting and linearly with the roller speed. The milling efficiency generally increased with both the counter-pressure setting and the roller speed. However, the effect of roller speed was negligible at the higher counter-pressure setting. The temperature rise inside the whitening chamber was moderate with the mean of 11.3℃ (range 5.6-18.3℃) even though it increased slightly with the roller speed. Considering the head rice recovery and milling efficiency, the optimum operational conditions of the machine appeared to be the counter-pressure setting of 67g/㎠ and the roller speed of 1,050rpm. Neglecting the small difference in the head rice recovery , the greater milling capacity could be obtained at the counter-pressure setting of 85g/㎠ with the roller speed of 850-1050rpm.

  • Purpose: This study was to compare the effect of center of pressure(COP) displacement and muscle activation onset during expected and unexpected sudden limb loading in subjects with low back pain and healthy control subjects. Most studies of COP displacement and muscle activation onset on postural task focused on sudden trunk loading or gross limb movements. Investigation of the COP displacement and muscle activation onset during expected and unexpected sudden upper limb loading deserves similar attention. Methods: For this study, 14 subjects with low back pain and 12 healthy control subjects are participated. Force plate and surface EMG measures were used to determine COP displacement and muscle activation onset under expected and unexpected sudden upper limb loading. Results: COP displacement and muscle activation onset under unexpected sudden upper limb loading were similar in subjects with low back pain and healthy control subjects. However, COP displacement and muscle activation onset under expected sudden upper limb loading were shortened in healthy control subject but not among the subjects with low back pain. Conclusion: The results provide evidence for impaired feed-forward control in subjects with low back pain.

  • Because of the increasing tool cost for cutting hard-to-cut materials, abrasive water jet (AWJ) milling recently has been regarded as a potential alternative machining method. However, it is difficult to control the depth and width of cut in AWJ milling because they vary depending on many AWJ cutting parameters. On 27 conditions within a limited range of pressure, feed rate, and abrasive flow rate, AWJ cutting was conducted on titanium, and depth profiles were measured with a laser sensor. From the depth profile data, depth and width of cut were acquired at each condition. The relationships between depth and parameters and between width and parameters were derived through regression analysis. The former can provide proper cutting conditions and the latter the proper pick feed necessary to generate a milled surface. It is verified that pressure mostly affects depth, whereas abrasive flow rate mostly affects width.
