  • Leak problem with large pressure drop occurrs non-periodic shock pulsation due to the deterioration of a isolation valve in feed-water recirculation piping system. This paper discusses on the shock vibration and noise occurred due to the effect of acoustical shock pulsations by degradation of the isolation valve in a power site.

  • The nature of feed gas is essential for the active species formed in the nonthermal plasma jets, which would induce various biological phenomena. We investigated the different physiological effects of atmospheric pressure soft-plasma jets on Esherichia coli and blood cells according to the feed gas. Cell death rate, growth curve, membrane molecular changes and induced genes were examined. The relationship between cellular reactions and active species generated by discharge will be discussed.

  • In this paper, the cause of the discrepancy of the inlet and outlet flow of the lubricating oil feed pump was analyzed by the flow measurement and the analysis of the flow network. At first, we thought that the flow difference was induced by a leak in the middle of the flow network. But, through the flow measurement using ultrasonic flow meter and the performance analysis of the pump, we knew that the cause of the flow difference was due to a drop in efficiency of the pump according to the pressure drop of the outlet. Also, we knew that the shape of the piping had no effect on the efficiency of the pump.

  • A rigorous dynamic simulation was performed in binary gas mixture H$_{2}$/CO (70:30 vol.%) to determinate start-up operating conditions of PSA(Pressure Swing Adsorption) processes. The rigorous dynamic model for the PSA process contains an Ergun equation for expressing the pressure drop in a bed, and valve equations to compute the boundary pressure change of the bed. As the result of the continuous dynamic simulation of 100 operating cyles in various initial conditions, the unsteady-state appeared in the early period and the cyclic steady-state came out about 20th cycle in feed condition and vaccum condition, and 30th cycle in pure H$_{2}$ condition. As time goes by valve equations made change the pressure at each end of the bed in ressurization, countercurrunt-depressurization and pressure equalization steps. The H$_{2}$ purity and the recovery is 99.99% and 86.73% respectively, which is slightly higher than the experimental data. Main contributiion of this study includes supplying fundamental technologies of handling combined variables PSA processes by developing rigorous models.

  • Restriction orifices in the feed and bleed circuit of nuclear power plant are designed using computer program capable of handling multiple hole cascade orifice assembly. Single hole stages of orifice assembly are alternated with multihole stages where necessary. The distance between stages is such that it allows full pressure recovery. The minimum static pressure is higher than vapor pressure at the operating temperature so that cavitation does not occur. Piping sizes are reviewed and increased if necessary to improve rigidity.

  • This paper presents a study of the influence of fixed pressure in turning. The effect of roundness error and diameter deformation were studied with respect to the fixed pressure applied inside the cylindrical work piece made by boring tool in CNC lathe. The boring tool used in this study is a tungsten carbide coated. The material of workpiece is SM45C and the machining method is dry cutting. Cutting conditions as cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut are constant. Finally, the change of fixed pressure had influence on the roundness error and diameter deformation.

Effect of Salt Level in Water on Feed Intake and Growth Rate of Red and Fallow Weaner Deer

  • Under a typical Mediterranean environment in southern Australia, the evaporation rate increases significantly in hot summers, resulting in highly saline drinking water for grazing animals. Also in the cropping areas, dryland salinity is a problem. Grazing animals under these environments can ingest excessive amount of salt from feed, drinking water and soil, which can lead to a reduction in growth rate. To understand the impact of high salt intake on grazing deer, two experiments were conducted to assess the effect of salt levels in drinking water on feed intake and growth rate of red and fallow weaner deer. The results revealed that fallow deer did not show any abnormal behaviour or sickness when salt level in drinking water was increased from 0% to 2.5%. Feed intake was not affected until the salt content in water exceeded 1.5%. Body weight gain was not affected by 1.2% salt in drinking water, but was reduced as salt content in water increased. Compared with deer on fresh water, the feed intake of red deer on saline water was 11-13% lower when salt level in drinking water was 0.4-0.8%. An increase in salt level in water up to 1% resulted in about a 30% reduction in feed intake (p<0.01). Body weight gain was significantly (p=0.004) reduced when salt level reached 1.2%. The deer on 1% salt tended to have a higher (p=0.052) osmotic pressure in serum. The concentration of P, K, Mg and S in serum was affected when salt level in water was over 1.0%. The results suggested that the salt level in drinking water should be lower than 1.2% for fallow weaner deer and 0.8% for red weaner deer to avoid any reduction in feed intake. Deer farmers need to regularly test the salt levels in drinking water on their farms to ensure that the salt intake of grazing deer is not over the levels that deer can tolerate.

A Feasibility Study on Adopting Sliding Pressure Operation for Drum Type Boiler

  • In general, drum-type boilers are designed for base load duty and applied under constant pressure operation mode. Recently, however conditions often occur that even drum-type boilers have to operate at partial load conditions. A feasibility study on adopting the sliding pressure operation for drum-type boiler was conducted, and corresponding performance changes and effects on the equipment were analyzed by utilizing a process simulation model. As a result, the conclusion was reached that drum type boilers are able to adopt the sliding pressure operation and can improve of net efficiency at part load operation in spite of the Rankine cycle efficiency reduction due to the decreases in main steam pressure. Because of thank to improvement of high pressure turbine stage-1 internal efficiency and power savings of boiler feed water pump. The sliding pressure operation is advantageous in terms of stress level relief for boiler tube as well as maintaining the rating steam temperature at part load condition. However, cautions are required because the drum boilers have poor dynamic response characteristics which may get worse during the sliding pressure operation.

Determination of Optimal Conditions of Pressure Toasting on Legume Seeds for Dairy Deed Industry : I. Effects of Pressure Toasting on Nutritive Values of Lupinus albus in Lactating Dairy Cows

  • Whole lupinus albus seeds were pressure toasted at temperatures of 100, 118 and $136^{\circ}C$ for 3, 7, 15 and 30 min to study rumen degradation and post-rumen digestion and to determine optimal heating conditions for the Dutch dairy feed industry. In sacco nylon bag and mobile bag techniques were employed for rumen and intestine incubations to determine ruminal degradation characteristics and intestinal digestion of crude protein (CP) in 4 lactation rumen cannulated and 4 lactating intestinal cannulated Dutch dairy cows fed 47% hay and 53% concentrate according to Dutch dairy requirements. Measured rumen degradation characteristics were soluble fraction (S), undegradable fraction (U), potentially degradable fraction (D), lag time (T0) and rate of degradation (Kd) of insoluble but degradable fraction. Percentage bypass feed protein (BCP), ruminal microbial protein synthesized based on available nitrogen (N_MP) and that based on available energy (E_MP), true protein supplied to the small intestine (TPSI), truly absorbed BCP (ABCP), absorbed microbial protein (AVP) in the small intestine, endogenous protein losses in the digestion (ENDP), true digested protein in the small intestine (TAP or DVE in Dutch) and degraded protein balance (PDB or OEB in Dutch) were totally evaluated using the new Dutch DVE/OEB System. Pressure toasting decreased (p<0.001) rumen degradability of CP. It reduced S (p<0.05) and Kd (p=0.06), increased D (p<0.05) and U (p<0.01) but did not alter T0 (p>0.05), thus resulting in dramatically increased BCP (p<0.001) with increasing time and temperature from 73.7 (raw) up to 182.5 g/kg DM ($136^{\circ}C/15min$). Although rumen microbial protein synthesized based on available energy (E_MP) was reduced, true protein (microbial and bypass feed protein) supplied to the small intestine (TPSI) was increased (p<0.001) from 153.1 (raw) to 247.6 g/kg DM ($136^{\circ}C/15min$). Due to digestibility of BCP in the intestine not changing (p>0.05) average 87.8%, the absorbed BCP increased (p<0.001) from 62.3 (raw) to 153.7 g/kg DM ($136^{\circ}C/15min$). Therefore DVE value of true digested protein in the small intestine was significantly increased (p<0.001) from 118.9 (raw) to 197.0 g/kg DM ($136^{\circ}C/15min$) and OEB value of degraded protein balance was significantly reduced (p<0.001) from 147.2 (raw) to 63.1 g/kg DM ($136^{\circ}C/15min$). It was concluded that pressure toasting was effective in shifting degradation of CP of lupinus albus from the rumen to small intestine without changing intestinal digestion. Further studies are required on the degradation and digestion of individual amino acids and on the damaging effects of processing on amino acids, especially the first limiting amino acids.

Development of Xenon feed system for a 300 W Hall-effect Thruster (300 W급 홀 추력기를 위한 제논연료공급장치 개발)

  • A Xenon feed system has been developed for a 300 W Hall-effect thruster intended for orbit maintenance of small satellite. The system can store about 2 kg of xenon gas at 150 bar and is capable of controlling the mass flow rate of the gas at 0.5 SCCM resolution. The performance of the system is verified with a laboratory experiment. It is confirmed that the operation of the feed system is successful at a pressure level of $1.0{\times}10^{-6}$ torr in the vacuum chamber.
