  • The present study investigated the feces production rate and fecal nitrogen production ratio of abalone, Haliotis discus hannai fed seaweed, Undaria pinnatifida. The abalone, with shell lengths of 3 cm, 5 cm, and 7 cm, were tested at temperatures of $12^{\circ}C$, $16^{\circ}C$, and $20^{\circ}C$ in a semi-recirculating aquaculture system. Under the given experimental conditions, the weight specific feces production rate (FPw) of the abalone increased with the decrease of shell length and the increase of temperature. The relationship of the FPw was. $FPw=-3.092+206.573/T - 1916.8/T^2+0.141L -0.037L^2(r^2=0.9412)$. In addition the abalone produced 17.8-22.5% of fecal material against ingested seaweed, Undaria pinnatifida, and $18.4-22.4\%$ of nitrogen ingested total nitrogen.

Quality Characteristics of Livestock Feces Composts Commercially Produced in Gyeonggi Province in 2008

  • This survey was conducted to promote the environment-friendly use and recycling of livestock feces by obtaining information about the current state of livestock feces composts manufactured in Gyeonggi Province. Therefore, some aspects of quality and manufacturing techniques of livestock feces composts (LFCs) were examined especially in relation to the LFCs quality standard (LQS). By surveying the 70 composting plants in Gyeonggi Province, the total commercial production of LFCs in 2008 was estimated to be about $480,000Mg\;year^{-1}$ and they were manufactured mainly by using both mechanical mixer and bottom air blower. LFCs were composed mainly of chicken feces 29.2%, pig+chicken feces 23.1%, pig feces 20.0%, livestock feces+oil cake 12.3%, pig+chicken+cattle feces 10.8% and pig+cattle feces 4.6%. On the basis of the current official standard which was revised on March 2010, 11 composts out of surveyed 76 ones did not meet the LQS due to inadequate content of water (5), OM/N (1), NaCl (2) and Zn (3). The satisfaction rate to LQS by manufacturers was 100% in the composts produced by farmer's cooperative societies, 80.7% by civil factories, and 44.4% by farming guilds, respectively. The OM/N declined by adding chicken feces and oil cake, while Ca content was increased by the addition of chicken feces and NaCl was increased by adding cattle feces.

  • 축산공해를 방지하고 대체에너지를 개발하기 위하여 가축분뇨로부터의 메탄가스 발효실험을 실시하여 다음의 결과를 얻었다. (1) 각 가축의 분뇨에 약 30%의 슬러지를 첨가하여 37$^{\circ}C$에서 20일간 발효시킨 결과 우분, 돈분 및 계분의 유기물 1 kg당 메탄가스 생성량은 각각 181, 248 및 235 $\ell$였으며 발효기간중 pH 변화는 발효 초기에 약간 저하하다가 점차 상승하는 경향을 보였다. (2) 우분(300g)과 물(200g)의 혼합물에 슬러지를 각각 20, 30, 40 (w/w) %씩 첨가하여 발효시킨 결과 가스생성량은 약 6.1, 14. 5, 13.4 $\ell$ 였다. (3) 우분에 톱밥과 왕겨를 각각 등량씩 혼합하여 발효시킨 결과 톱밥 첨가시가 왕겨 첨가시보다 메탄생성량이 많았다. (4) 메탄발효처리물의 N, K, P의 함량에 있어서 N, K의 함량은 계분>돈분>우분의 순서였고 P는 우분>계분>돈분의 순서였다. (5) 수중펌프발효조를 이용하여 우분으로부터 메탄가스 생산발효를 20일간 실시한 결과 유기물 1kg 당 188 $\ell$의 메탄가스가 생성되었고, 이 때 생성된 총 메탄가스의 가격과 소모된 전력요금과는 거의 비슷하였다.

Year-round Monitoring of Verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli from Feces of Dairy Cattle

  • A PCR-aided monitoring of verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) was performed over the period of 12 months by using fresh feces collected monthly from 5 dairy cows that had been identified as VTEC carriers. The PCR products were confirmed to be verotoxin genes by Southern hybridization using a gene fragment of verotoxin 2 as a probe. Although seasonal variation of VTEC shedding seemed to depend on each cow, several factors may have influenced the frequency of detection. Shedding of VTEC tended to be reduced during grazing from the middle of May up to the beginning of October. Only one cow was positive for VTEC in August. Dry-off was also suggested to have a depressive effect on VTEC shedding, i.e. 3 of 4 dry cows showed no shedding of VTEC. Contrary to these factors, winter or indoor rearing tended to increase VTEC with only 5/24 samples being negative during the period from November to April. Total VFA concentration was higher (p<0.05) in VTEC-positive feces than in VTEC-negative feces, while fecal pH and VFA proportions were not different. Partial sequences of verotoxin genes from feces of 4 VTEC-positive cows were nearly identical (99-100%), suggesting that gut bacteria sharing the same gene were distributed among the cows. The present results indicate that grazing and dry-off could be factors which reduce VTEC shedding, while winter/indoor rearing may be a factor which increases the shedding, possibly through on-farm interactions.

Effects of Unprocessed or Steam-flaked Corn Based Diets with or without Enzyme Additive on In Vivo Nutrient Digestibility and Distribution of Corn Particles in the Feces of Holstein Steers

  • Effects of unprocessed (whole) or steam-flaked corn with or without enzyme additives on in vivo nutrient digestibilities and distribution of corn particles in the feces of Holstein steers were determined in a $4{\times}4$ Latin square experiment using four Holstein steers fed the diets containing 1) whole corn without enzyme additive, 2) whole corn with enzyme additive, 3) flaked corn without enzyme additive, or 4) flaked corn with enzyme additive. With regard to nutrient digestibilities such as DM, CP, CF, NFE, NDF, and ADF, no significant differences were detected among treatments, and also the nutrient digestibilities were not affected by the addition of enzyme additive. When distribution of corn particles in the feces was examined, there were no significant differences in the amount of 2, 8 mm and total corn particles. However, feeding flaked corn resulted in less corn particles (4 mm) in the feces than feeding whole corn (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in amounts of corn particles in the feces due to the addition of enzyme additive.

포유 모돈 분뇨의 배설량과 이화학적 특성 (Production and Characteristics on Manure and Urine of Lactating Sow)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the quantity and characteristics of manure and urine produced by lactating sow fed commercial diet for 24 days. 3 way cross bred 10 lactating sows with litters were alloted at farrowing pen. Crude protein and digestible energy were 14% and 3,467 kcal in diet, respectively. Average body weight of sow was 237.5kg. Feces with urine was produced 6.98kg per day by lactating sow ranging from 5.72 to 7.93kg. Manure solid was produced 2.75 kg per day ranging from 2.17 to 3.87kg and urine 4.23kg per day ranging from 3.55 to 4.06kg, respectively. Dry matter of feces and urine were 29.91 and 1.54%, respectively. Nitrogen and phosphorus contents in fresh feces were 0.86 and 0.30%, respectively. Nitrogen content in urine was 0.86, and phosphorus in urine was 0.47%. pH in manure was 6.73 and in urine was 8.38 respectively. Biochemical oxygen demand and suspended solid in urine were 5,196 and 308mg/$\ell$, respectively.

한국산 선발 계통, 일본산 양식 계통 그리고 이들 두 계통간 잡종 계통 참돔 치어의 총 암모니아성 질소 배설률 및 분 배출률을 통한 사료내 단백질 이용 효율 비교 (Total Ammonia Nitrogen Excretion Rates and Feces Production Rates as an Index for Comparing Efficiency of Dietary Protein Utilization of Offsprings from Selected Korean Strain, Cultured Japanese Strain and Their Intraspecific Hybrid Strain of Juvenile Red Sea Bream, Pagrus major)

  • An experiment was conducted to investigate the differences of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) excretion rates and feces production rates among the offsprings from cultured Japanese strain (JJ, mean BW; $17.1{\pm}0.1g$), intraspecific hybrid strain between cultured Japanese and selected Korean strain (JK, mean BW: $17.1{\pm}0.1g$) and selected Korean strain(KK, mean BW: $21.5{\pm}0.1g$) of red sea bream in order to compare their dietary protein utilization efficiency. Fish were hand-fed with a commercial diet containing 46.7% crude protein for 2 weeks, three times daily 09:00, 13:00 and 17:00. After daily feeding, the TAN excretion rates reached peaks of 49.03, 58.75 and 36.26mg/kg fish/hr for the JJ, JK and KK strain, respectively, during the daytime. The value of the KK strain was significantly lower than that of the JJ and JX shuin (P<0.05), however daily TAN excretion rates of the JJ, JK and KK strain were not different (P>0.05). When fish were fed at satiation after 4 days of starvation, TAN excretion rates reached the maximum values 4 hours after the feeding fur the KK (31.23 mg/kg fish/hr) and 6 hours after the feeding fur the JJ (44.19 mg/tg fish/hr) and JK strain (41.70 mg/kg fish/hr). After 3 days of starvation, the daily endogenous TAU excretion rates (ETE) for the JJ, JK. and KK strain were 286.91, 215.66 and 179.29mg/kg fish/day, respectively. The value of the KK strain was lower than that of the JJ and JK strain (P<0.05). The total feces production rates of the JJ, JK and KK strain were not significantly different, however the proportions of feces production rates by time for the JJ, JK and KK strain were different (P<0.05). As overall results, efficiency of dietary protein utilization of JJ, JK and KK seems to be different and KK strain could offer a desirable option for aquaculture purpose.

A comprehensive longitudinal study of gut microbiota dynamic changes in laying hens at four growth stages prior to egg production

  • Objective: The poultry industry is a primary source of animal protein worldwide. The gut microbiota of poultry birds, such as chickens and ducks, is critical in maintaining their health, growth, and productivity. This study aimed to identify longitudinal changes in the gut microbiota of laying hens from birth to the pre-laying stage. Methods: From a total of 80 Hy-Line Brown laying hens, birds were selected based on weight at equal intervals to collect feces (n = 20 per growth) and ileal contents (n = 10 per growth) for each growth stage (days 10, 21, 58, and 101). The V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene were amplified after extracting DNA from feces and ileal contents. Amplicon sequencing was performed using Illumina, followed by analysis. Results: Microbial diversity increased with growth stages, regardless of sampling sites. Microbial community analysis indicated that Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the dominant phyla in the feces and ileal. The abundance of Lactobacillus was highest on day 10, and that of Escherichia-shigella was higher on day 21 than those at the other stages at the genus level (for the feces and ileal contents; p<0.05). Furthermore, Turicibacter was the most abundant genus after changing feed (for the feces and ileal contents; p<0.05). The fecal Ruminococcus torques and ileal Lysinibacillus were negatively correlated with the body weights of chickens (p<0.05). Conclusion: The gut microbiota of laying hens changes during the four growth stages, and interactions between microbiota and feed may be present. Our findings provide valuable data for understanding the gut microbiota of laying hens at various growth stages and future applied studies.

돈분과 돈슬러리의 성분이 열분해공정에 의한 바이오오일 생산효율에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Pig Feces and Pig Waste Mixture Compositions on Bio-oil Production by Pyrolysis Process)

  • 바이오매스를 바이오오일로 전환시기키 위하여 오거형의 반응조를 설계, 제작하여 실험하였다. 10.2L의 반응조는 $550^{\circ}C$를 유지하며 Batch식으로 운영하였다. 돈분뇨 혼합물, 돈분 왕겨혼합물, 돈분 톱밥혼합물 등 세 가지 혼합물을 대상으로 주(主) 구성성분인 헤미셀루로즈, 리그닌, 셀루로즈, 단백질, 지질(脂質)등을 화학적으로 분석하였다. 실험결과에 의하면 전섬유소 (holocellulose = hemicellulose + cellulose), 리그닌(lignin)의 함유량이 클수록 바이오오일 생산량은 많았으나, 회분(ash)함량은 현저한 감소를 나타내었다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 바이오매스기질을 평가하였으며, 돈분과 왕겨의 상관성은 거의 나타나지 않았으나 돈분과 톱밥의 상관성은 매우 높게 나타났다.

Deodorization of Pig Feces by Fungal Application

  • This study was carried out to screen yeasts effective in reducing odor from pig feces. Three isolates from soil and compost sources were selected to treat pig feces. On the basis of morphological and biochemical characteristics, one isolate from compost was Candida rugosa, and two isolates from soil were Candida rugosa and Candida maris. These isolates showed deodorizing activity by reducing the concentration of ${NH}_3$ and R-${NH}_2$. Volatile fatty acids (VFA) are the specific malodorous compounds of pig feces, and the Candida maris from soil showed a 100% reduction of butyric, iso-butyric, and iso-valeric acid in 10% pig slurry medium. However, the Candida rugosa from compost showed a 100% reduction of butyric and iso-butyric acid while that from soil showed a 100% reduction of propionic, butyric acid and iso-valeric acid in the medium. Also, these yeasts were effective in reducing $NH_{4}-N$, soluble-N, and biological oxygen demand (BOD).
