Assisted Magnetic Resonance Imaging Diagnosis for Alzheimer's Disease Based on Kernel Principal Component Analysis and Supervised Classification Schemes

  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an insidious and degenerative neurological disease. It is a new topic for AD patients to use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computer technology and is gradually explored at present. Preprocessing and correlation analysis on MRI data are firstly made in this paper. Then kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) is used to extract features of brain gray matter images. Finally supervised classification schemes such as AdaBoost algorithm and support vector machine algorithm are used to classify the above features. Experimental results by means of AD program Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database which contains brain structural MRI (sMRI) of 116 AD patients, 116 patients with mild cognitive impairment, and 117 normal controls show that the proposed method can effectively assist the diagnosis and analysis of AD. Compared with principal component analysis (PCA) method, all classification results on KPCA are improved by 2%-6% among which the best result can reach 84%. It indicates that KPCA algorithm for feature extraction is more abundant and complete than PCA.

  • Various feature extraction algorithms are widely applied to real-time image processing applications for extracting significant features from images. Feature extraction algorithms are mostly combined with image processing algorithms mostly for image tracking and recognition. Feature extraction function is used to supply feature information to the other image processing algorithms and it is mainly implemented in a preprocessing stage. Nowadays, image processing applications are faced with embedded system implementation for a real-time processing. In order to satisfy this requirement, it is necessary to reduce execution time so as to improve the performance. Reducing the time for executing a feature extraction function dose not only extend the execution time for the other image processing algorithms, but it also helps satisfy a real-time requirement. This paper explains FAST (Feature from Accelerated Segment Test algorithm) of E. Rosten and presents FPGA-based embedded hardware accelerator architecture. The proposed acceleration scheme can be implemented by using approximately 2,217 Flip Flops, 5,034 LUTs, 2,833 Slices, and 18 Block RAMs in the Xilinx Vertex IV FPGA. In the Modelsim - based simulation result, the proposed hardware accelerator takes 3.06 ms to extract 954 features from a image with $640{\times}480$ pixels and this result shows the cost effectiveness of the propose scheme.

Comparative Study on Feature Extraction Schemes for Feature-based Structural Displacement Measurement (특징점 추출 기법에 따른 구조물 동적 변위 측정 성능에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, feature point detection and displacement measurement performance depending on feature extraction algorithms were compared and analyzed according to environmental changes and target types in the feature point-based displacement measurement algorithm. A three-story frame structure was designed for performance evaluation, and the displacement response of the structure was digitized into FHD (1920×1080) resolution. For performance analysis, the initial measurement distance was set to 10m, and increased up to 40m with an increment of 10m. During the experiments, illuminance was fixed to 450lux or 120lux. The artificial and natural targets mounted on the structure were set as regions of interest and used for feature point detection. Various feature detection algorithms were implemented for performance comparisons. As a result of the feature point detection performance analysis, the Shi-Tomasi corner and KAZE algorithm were found that they were robust to the target type, illuminance change, and increase in measurement distance. The displacement measurement accuracy using those two algorithms was also the highest. However, when using natural targets, the displacement measurement accuracy is lower than that of artificial targets. This indicated the limitation in extracting feature points as the resolution of the natural target decreased as the measurement distance increased.

  • In this paper, we propose the speaker identification system that uses vowel that has speaker's characteristic. System is divided to speech feature extraction part and speaker identification part. Speech feature extraction part extracts speaker's feature. Voiced speech has the characteristic that divides speakers. For vowel extraction, formants are used in voiced speech through frequency analysis. Vowel-a that different formants is extracted in text. Pitch, formant, intensity, log area ratio, LP coefficients, cepstral coefficients are used by method to draw characteristic. The cpestral coefficients that show the best performance in speaker identification among several methods are used. Speaker identification part distinguishes speaker using Neural Network. 12 order cepstral coefficients are used learning input data. Neural Network's structure is MLP and learning algorithm is BP (Backpropagation). Hidden nodes and output nodes are incremented. The nodes in the incremental learning neural network are interconnected via weighted links and each node in a layer is generally connected to each node in the succeeding layer leaving the output node to provide output for the network. Though the vowel extract and incremental learning, the proposed system uses low learning data and reduces learning time and improves identification rate.

Proposed Efficient Architectures and Design Choices in SoPC System for Speech Recognition

  • This paper presents the design of a System on Programmable Chip (SoPC) based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) for speech recognition in which Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) for speech feature extraction and Vector Quantization for recognition are used. The implementing process of the speech recognition system undergoes the following steps: feature extraction, training codebook, recognition. In the first step of feature extraction, the input voice data will be transformed into spectral components and extracted to get the main features by using MFCC algorithm. In the recognition step, the obtained spectral features from the first step will be processed and compared with the trained components. The Vector Quantization (VQ) is applied in this step. In our experiment, Altera's DE2 board with Cyclone II FPGA is used to implement the recognition system which can recognize 64 words. The execution speed of the blocks in the speech recognition system is surveyed by calculating the number of clock cycles while executing each block. The recognition accuracies are also measured in different parameters of the system. These results in execution speed and recognition accuracy could help the designer to choose the best configurations in speech recognition on SoPC.

  • The wavelet transform is the most recent technique for processing signals with time-varying spectra. In this paper, the wavelet transform is utilized to improved the assessment and multi-resolution analysis of acoustic emission signals generating in partial discharge. This paper especially deals with the assessment of process statistical parameter using the features extracted from the wavelet coefficients of measured acoustic emission signals in case of applied voltage 20[kv]. Since the parameter assessment using all wavelet coefficients will often turn out leads to inefficient or inaccurate results, we selected that level-3 stage of multi decomposition in discrete wavelet transform. We applied FIR(Finite Impulse Response)digital filter algorithm in discrete to suppression for random noise. The white noise be included high frequency component denoised as decomposition of discrete wavelet transform level-3. We make use of the feature extraction parameter namely, maximum value of acoustic emission signal, average value, dispersion, skewness, kurtosis, etc. The effectiveness of this new method has been verified on ability a diagnosis transformer go through feature extraction in stage of acting(the early period, the last period) .

Enhanced CT-image for Covid-19 classification using ResNet 50

  • Disease caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) is sweeping the globe. There are numerous methods for identifying this disease using a chest imaging. Computerized Tomography (CT) chest scans are used in this study to detect COVID-19 disease using a pretrain Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) ResNet50. This model is based on image dataset taken from two hospitals and used to identify Covid-19 illnesses. The pre-train CNN (ResNet50) architecture was used for feature extraction, and then fully connected layers were used for classification, yielding 97%, 96%, 96%, 96% for accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score, respectively. When combining the feature extraction techniques with the Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN), it produced accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-scores of 92.5%, 83%, 92%, and 87.3%. In our suggested approach, we use a preprocessing phase to improve accuracy. The image was enhanced using the Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) algorithm, which was followed by cropping the image before feature extraction with ResNet50. Finally, a fully connected layer was added for classification, with results of 99.1%, 98.7%, 99%, 98.8% in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score.

Improved DT Algorithm Based Human Action Features Detection

  • The choice of the motion features influences the result of the human action recognition method directly. Many factors often influence the single feature differently, such as appearance of the human body, environment and video camera. So the accuracy of action recognition is restricted. On the bases of studying the representation and recognition of human actions, and giving fully consideration to the advantages and disadvantages of different features, the Dense Trajectories(DT) algorithm is a very classic algorithm in the field of behavior recognition feature extraction, but there are some defects in the use of optical flow images. In this paper, we will use the improved Dense Trajectories(iDT) algorithm to optimize and extract the optical flow features in the movement of human action, then we will combined with Support Vector Machine methods to identify human behavior, and use the image in the KTH database for training and testing.

A Study on Feature Selection in Face Image Using Principal Component Analysis and Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm (PCA와 입자 군집 최적화 알고리즘을 이용한 얼굴이미지에서 특징선택에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we introduce the methodological system design via feature selection using Principal Component Analysis and Particle Swarm Optimization algorithms. The overall methodological system design comes from three kinds of modules such as preprocessing module, feature extraction module, and recognition module. First, Histogram equalization enhance the quality of image by exploiting contrast effect based on the normalized function generated from histogram distribution values of 2D face image. Secondly, PCA extracts feature vectors to be used for face recognition by using eigenvalues and eigenvectors obtained from covariance matrix. Finally the feature selection for face recognition among the entire feature vectors is considered by means of the Particle Swarm Optimization. The optimized Polynomial-based Radial Basis Function Neural Networks are used to evaluate the face recognition performance. This study shows that the proposed methodological system design is effective to the analysis of preferred face recognition.

Recognizing F5-like stego images from multi-class JPEG stego images

  • To recognize F5-like (such as F5 and nsF5) steganographic algorithm from multi-class stego images, a recognition algorithm based on the identifiable statistical feature (IDSF) of F5-like steganography is proposed in this paper. First, this paper analyzes the special modification ways of F5-like steganography to image data, as well as the special changes of statistical properties of image data caused by the modifications. And then, by constructing appropriate feature extraction sources, the IDSF of F5-like steganography distinguished from others is extracted. Lastly, based on the extracted IDSFs and combined with the training of SVM (Support Vector Machine) classifier, a recognition algorithm is presented to recognize F5-like stego images from images set consisting of a large number of multi-class stego images. A series of experimental results based on the detection of five types of typical JPEG steganography (namely F5, nsF5, JSteg, Steghide and Outguess) indicate that, the proposed algorithm can distinguish F5-like stego images reliably from multi-class stego images generated by the steganography mentioned above. Furthermore, even if the types of some detected stego images are unknown, the proposed algorithm can still recognize F5-like stego images correctly with high accuracy.
