The feature subset selection is used as a preprocessing step of a teaming algorithm. If collected data are irrelevant or redundant information, we can improve the performance of learning by removing these data before creating of the learning model. The feature subset selection can also reduce the search space and the storage requirement. This paper proposed a new feature subset selection algorithm that is using the heuristic function based on entropy to evaluate the performance of the abstracted feature subset and feature selection. The ACS algorithm was used as a search method. We could decrease a size of learning model and unnecessary calculating time by reducing the dimension of the feature that was used for learning.

In this paper, we proposed a feature selection method using Binary Particle Swarm Optimization(BPSO) and Mutual information. This proposed method consists of the feature selection part for selecting candidate feature subset by mutual information and the optimal feature selection part for choosing optimal feature subset by BPSO in the candidate feature subsets. In the candidate feature selection part, we computed the mutual information of all features, respectively and selected a candidate feature subset by the ranking of mutual information. In the optimal feature selection part, optimal feature subset can be found by BPSO in the candidate feature subset. In the BPSO process, we used multi-object function to optimize both accuracy of classifier and selected feature subset size. DNA expression dataset are used for estimating the performance of the proposed method. Experimental results show that this method can achieve better performance for pattern recognition problems than conventional ones.

Feature subset selection is as a pre-processing step in learning algorithms. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm, ModifiedFAST, for feature subset selection. This algorithm is suitable for text datasets, and uses the concept of information gain to remove irrelevant and redundant features. A new optimal value of the threshold for symmetric uncertainty, used to identify relevant features, is found. The thresholds used by previous feature selection algorithms such as FAST, Relief, and CFS were not optimal. It has been proven that the threshold value greatly affects the percentage of selected features and the classification accuracy. A new performance unified metric that combines accuracy and the number of features selected has been proposed and applied in the proposed algorithm. It was experimentally shown that the percentage of selected features obtained by the proposed algorithm was lower than that obtained using existing algorithms in most of the datasets. The effectiveness of our algorithm on the optimal threshold was statistically validated with other algorithms.

Cyber attacks are evolving commensurate with recent developments in information security technology. Intrusion detection systems collect various types of data from computers and networks to detect security threats and analyze the attack information. The large amount of data examined make the large number of computations and low detection rates problematic. Feature selection is expected to improve the classification performance and provide faster and more cost-effective results. Despite the various feature selection studies conducted for intrusion detection systems, it is difficult to automate feature selection because it is based on the knowledge of security experts. This paper proposes a feature selection technique to overcome the performance problems of intrusion detection systems. Focusing on feature selection, the first phase of the proposed system aims at constructing a feature subset using a sequential forward floating search (SFFS) to downsize the dimension of the variables. The second phase constructs a classification model with the selected feature subset using a random forest classifier (RFC) and evaluates the classification accuracy. Experiments were conducted with the NSL-KDD dataset using SFFS-RF, and the results indicated that feature selection techniques are a necessary preprocessing step to improve the overall system performance in systems that handle large datasets. They also verified that SFFS-RF could be used for data classification. In conclusion, SFFS-RF could be the key to improving the classification model performance in machine learning.
In supervised machine learning, an induction algorithm, which is able to extract rules from data with learning capability, provides a useful tool for data mining. Practical induction algorithms are known to degrade in prediction accuracy and generate complex rules unnecessarily when trained on data containing superfluous features. Thus it needs feature subset selection for better performance of them. In feature subset selection on the induction algorithm, wrapper method is repeatedly run it on the dataset using various feature subsets. But it is impractical to search the whole space exhaustively unless the features are small. This study proposes a heuristic method that uses sensitivity analysis of neural networks to the wrapper method for generating rules with higher possible accuracy. First it gives priority to all features using sensitivity analysis of neural networks. And it uses the wrapper method that searches the ordered feature space. In experiments to three datasets, we show that the suggested method is capable of selecting a feature subset that improves the performance of the induction algorithm within certain iteration.

Feature selection is the one of important issues in the field of machine learning and pattern recognition. It is the technique to find a subset from the source data and can give the best classification performance. Ie, it is the technique to extract the subset closely related to the purpose of the classification. In this paper, we experimented to select the best feature subset for improving classification accuracy when classify success and failure factors in software reuse. And we compared with existing studies. As a result, we found that a feature subset was selected in this study showed the better classification accuracy.

Best subset selection procedure based on mutual information (MI) between a set of explanatory variables and a dependent class variable is suggested. Derivation of multivariate MI is based on normal mixtures. Several types of normal mixtures are proposed. Also a best subset selection algorithm is proposed. Four real data sets are employed to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposals.

Feature selection is the one of important issue in the field of data mining and machine learning. It is the technique to find a subset of features which provides the best classification performance, from the source data. We propose a feature subset selection method using the neighborhood rough set model based on information granularity. To demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed method, it was applied to select the useful features associated with breast tumor diagnosis of 298 shape features extracted from 5,252 breast ultrasound images, which include 2,745 benign and 2,507 malignant cases. Experimental results showed that 19 diagnostic features were strong predictors of breast cancer diagnosis and then average classification accuracy was 97.6%.

Existing methods always rely on statistical features to extract local words for microblog user geolocation. There are many non-local words in extracted words, which makes geolocation accuracy lower. Considering the statistical and semantic features of local words, this paper proposes a microblog user geolocation method by extracting local words based on word clustering and wrapper feature selection. First, ordinary words without positional indications are initially filtered based on statistical features. Second, a word clustering algorithm based on word vectors is proposed. The remaining semantically similar words are clustered together based on the distance of word vectors with semantic meanings. Next, a wrapper feature selection algorithm based on sequential backward subset search is proposed. The cluster subset with the best geolocation effect is selected. Words in selected cluster subset are extracted as local words. Finally, the Naive Bayes classifier is trained based on local words to geolocate the microblog user. The proposed method is validated based on two different types of microblog data - Twitter and Weibo. The results show that the proposed method outperforms existing two typical methods based on statistical features in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score.
In this paper, an optimal feature selection method considering sematic of features, which is preprocess of document classification is proposed. The feature selection is very important part on classification, which is composed of removing redundant features and selecting essential features. LSA (Latent Semantic Analysis) for considering meaning of the features is adopted. However, a supervised LSA which is suitable method for classification problems is used because the basic LSA is not specialized for feature selection. We also apply GA (Genetic Algorithm) to the features, which are obtained from supervised LSA to select better feature subset. Finally, we project documents onto new selected feature subset and classify them using specific classifier, SVM (Support Vector Machine). It is expected to get high performance and efficiency of classification by selecting optimal feature subset using the proposed hybrid method of supervised LSA and GA. Its efficiency is proved through experiments using internet news classification with low features.
