The unique thermomechanical properties of shape memory alloys (SMAs) make it a versatile material for strengthening and repairing structures. In particular, several research studies have already demonstrated the effectiveness of using the heat activated shape memory effect of nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) based SMAs to actively confine concrete members. Despite the proven effectiveness and wide commercial availability of Ni-Ti SMAs, however, their high cost remains a major obstacle for applications in real structural engineering projects. In this study, the shape memory effect of a new, much more economical iron-based SMA (Fe-SMA) is characterized and the compressive behavior of concrete confined with Fe-SMA strips is investigated. Tests showed the Fe-SMA strips used in this study are capable of developing high levels of recovery stress and can be easily formed into hoops to provide effective active and passive confining pressure to concrete members. Compared to concrete cylinders confined with conventional carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites, Fe-SMA confinement yielded significantly higher compressive deformation capacity and residual strength. Overall, the compressive behavior of Fe-SMA confined concrete was comparable to that of Ni-Ti SMA confined concrete. This study clearly shows the potential for Fe-SMA as a robust and cost-effective strengthening solution for concrete structures and opens possibilities for more practical applications.
The chemical composition and the semiconducting properties of the passive films formed on Alloy 690 in various film formation conditions were investigated by XPS, photocurrent measurement, and Mott-Schottky analysis. The XPS and photocurrent spectra showed that the passive films formed on Alloy 690 in pH 8.5 buffer solution at ambient temperature, in air at $400^{\circ}C$, and in PWR condition comprise $Cr_2O_3$, $Cr(OH)_3$, ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$, NiO, and $Ni(OH)_2$. The thermally grown oxide in air and the passive film formed at high potential (0.3 $V_{SCE}$) in pH 8.5 buffer solution were highly Cr-enriched, whereas the films formed in PWR condition and that formed at low potential (-0.3 $V_{SCE}$) in pH 8.5 buffer solution showed relatively high Ni content and low Cr content. The Mott-Schottky plots exhibited n-type semiconductivity, inferring that the semiconducting properties of the passive films formed on Alloy 690 in various film formation conditions are dominated by Cr-substituted ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$. The donor density, i.e., concentration of oxygen vacancy, was measured to be $1.2{\times}10^{21}{\sim}4.6{\times}10^{21}cm^{-3}$ and lowered with increase in the Cr content in the passive film.
The order-disorder phase transition of (Fe/sub 0.61/Ni/sub 0.39/)₃V alloy that is annealed at various temperatures and time conditions was sty(lied with the examination of long-range order parameter(S) by using neutron diffraction method. As a result, the structure of the sample annealed at 680℃ for 94 h was not changed; that is, it existed iii perfect disordered state and showed face-centered cubic structure. Otherwise, samples which were annealed at temperature below 640℃ showed the value of long-range order parameter with 0 < S < 1 and phase transition into simple cubic structure partly. It was found that the annealed sample at 465℃ for 144 h is the most approximated to the thermal equilibrium state from the S-T/T/sub c/ related equation of Cowley.
In the present study, the effect of annealing condition on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the cold-rolled CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloys were studied. Annealing treatment was performed under six different temperatures. Microstructural analyses confirmed that annealing below 800℃ resulted in the formation of intermetallic sigma (σ) phase within face-centered cubic (FCC) matrix, and this σ phase has beneficial effects on the formation of fine-grained structures through retardation of grain growth and recrystallization due to Zener pinning effect. This led to the enhanced yield strength and tensile strength of ~646 and ~855 MPa, respectively. The microstructures annealed above 800℃ demonstrated single FCC phase, and fully-recrystallized single FCC microstructure resulted in a slight increase in ductility with a considerable decrease in strength. The evolution of mechanical properties, such as strength, ductility, and strain hardening exponent, will be discussed.

As a part of assessment of the structural material for the molten salt handling system, corrosion behavior of austenitic alloys, Fe-base and Ni-base in the molten salt of $LiCl-Li_2O_2$ was investigated in the range of temperature; 650~$725^{\circ}C$, time; 24- 168h, $Li_2O$; 3wt%, mixed gas; Ar-10%$O_2$. In the molten salt of $LiCl-Li_2O_2$, Ni-base alloys showed higher corrosion resistance than Fe-base alloys. Fe-base alloy with low Fe and high Ni contents exhibited better corrosion resistance. The scales of $Cr_2O_3$, $FeCr_2O_4$ on Fe-base alloys were showed, and $Cr_2O_3$, $NiFe_2O_4$ on Ni-base alloys were also showed.
Effect of V addition on the precipitation behavior and strength of Fe-36Ni based high strength Invar alloy for power transmission wire was investigated. Fe-36Ni Invar alloy plates were fabricated using conventional ingot casting followed by hot rolling. High strength can be obtained through precipitation hardening and strain hardening by cold rolling. Simulation using FactSage$^{(R)}$ revealed that equilibrium phases which can be formed are two kinds of MC-type precipitates, $Mo_{2}C$ and $M_{23}C_6$ carbide. The latter stoichiometric carbide was expected to be formed at relatively lower temperature of $800^{\circ}C$.
The effect of europium-driven corrosion behavior of Alloy 709 in FLiNaK molten salt was investigated by static immersion tests at 700 ℃. It was found that the corrosion of Alloy 709 increased after the addition of EuF3, even though the standard reduction potential of Eu(III)/Eu(II) was negative than those of Fe(II)/Fe, Ni(II)/Ni and Cr (II)/Cr. The presence of Eu(III) led to deeper corrosion attack layers and more pits on the steel surface in comparison with corrosion in blank FLiNaK. However, the addition of Eu(III) seemed to have a role in reducing surface cracking that was explored in corrosion by blank FLiNaK, which depended on Eu(III) concentration.

1. The oxidation resistance of $Y_{2}O_{3}$ containing Ni-base alloy is superior to that of the alloy without $Y_{2}O_{3}$. 2. The appearance of oxides of Ni-20Cr-20Fe-5Nb-$1Y_{2}O_{3}$ alloy is similar to that of oxides in commercial PM1000 and MA754 alloy. 3. The oxides in ODS alloy are grown mainly at particle boundaries.
The magnetic shape memory alloys have recently received a lot of attention due to the considerable progress achieved in understanding the particular importance and the development of the factors. Among these alloys, the ferromagnetic Co-Ni- alloys have been concerned specially because of the thermoelastic character of the fcc (g) - bct (a) martensitic transformation which exhibits under the action of the temperature (shape memory effect), the stress (superelasticity) and the magnetic field (magnetoelasticity). The morphological, the crystallographical, and the thermal characteristics of thermally induced martensite in Co-35.3Ni-11.3Al(wt.%) and Co-28.1Ni-47.4Fe-3.3Ti (wt.%) alloy have been investigated by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC).
