Analysis of the Effects of Ti, Si, and Mo on the Resistance to Corrosion and Oxidation of Fe-18Cr Stainless Steels by Response Surface Methodology (반응표면분석법을 활용한 Fe-18Cr 스테인리스강의 부식 및 산화 저항성에 미치는 Ti, Si, Mo의 영향 분석)

  • We studied the corrosion and oxidation properties of Fe-18Cr-0.4Nb-(0.1~0.6)Ti-(1~3)Si-(0.5~2)Mo stainless steel. The resistance to general and pitting corrosion was evaluated and the results were analyzed by Response Surface Methodology (RSM) as a function of alloy composition. The effects of alloy composition and heat treatment on the oxidation resistance were also examined. Mo increased both general corrosion resistance and pitting corrosion resistance. Si improved the resistance of the alloys to pitting corrosion. Si was also beneficial for general corrosion resistance of the alloys containing Mo at more than 1 wt.%. However, Mo was detrimental when its content was lower. Effects of Ti on general corrosion properties appeared to be weak and a high concentration of Ti appeared to deteriorate pitting resistance. The thickness of the oxidation scale increased and adhesion of the scale worsened as the temperature increased from $800^{\circ}C$ to $900^{\circ}C$. Weight gain of the alloys due to oxidation at $900^{\circ}C$ clearly showed that the resistance to oxidation is improved by annealing at $860^{\circ}C$ and an increase of Si content.

Microwave Absorbing Properties of Fe-Si-Al Alloy Flaky Powder-Rubber Composites (Fe-Si-Al 합금 분말 · 고무 복합 자성체의 전파 흡수 특성)

  • A magnetic composite as noise absorber of quasi-microwave band was developed. The Fe-Si-Al alloy powder were forged by attrition mill to get flaky shape. The magnetic composite sheet was fabricated in which powders are dispersed in polymer and aligned in the direction perpendicular to electromagnetic wave propagation. The permittivity of magnetic composite is increased as forging time increasing, while the permeability is decreased slightly. The maximum attenuation peak of reflection loss is shifted to lower fiequency range as milling time increasing, and the value of maximum attenuation peak is to get smaller gradually. From these result, we could designed a noise absorber sheet (t=1.0 mm) for quasi-microwave band, which is impedance matched at 1.4 GHz with respect to -8.2 dB reflection 1055.

Production of Fe-Si-Cr Ferro Alloy by Using Mixed Silicothermic and Carbothermic Reduction (실리콘 및 탄소 복합 열환원 반응을 이용한 페로실리크롬 합금철의 제조)

  • Fe-Si-Cr ferroalloy is predominantly produced by carbothermic reduction. In this study, silicothermic and carbothermic mixed reduction of chromite ore to produce Fe-Si-Cr alloy is suggested. As reductants, silicon and silicon carbide are evaluated by thermochemical calculations, which prove that silicon carbide can be applied as a raw material. Considering the critical temperature of the change from the carbide to the metallic form of chromium, thereduction experiments were carried out. In these high temperature reactions, silicon and silicon carbide act as effective reductants to produce Fe-Si-Cr ferroalloy. However, at temperatures lower than the critical temperature, silicon carbide shows a slow reaction rate for reducing chromite ore. For the proper implementation of a commercial process that uses silicon carbide reductants, the operation temperature should be kept above the critical temperature. Using equilibrium calculations for chromite ore reduction with silicon and silicon carbide, the compositions of reacted metal and slag were successfully predicted. Therefore, the mass balance of the silicothermic and carbothermic mixed reduction of chromite ore can be proposed based on the calculations and the experimental results.

Effect of Two-step Annealing on the Magnetic Properties of $Co_{67}Fe_{4.5}Nb_{2}Si_{10}B_{15}$ Amorphous Alloy ($Co_{67}Fe_{4.5}Nb_{2}Si_{10}B_{15}$ 비정질합금의 자성에 미치는 2단 어닐링의 효과)

  • In a $Co_{67}Fe_{4.5}Nb_{2}Si_{10}B_{15}$ amorphous alloy ribbon the effect to two-step annealing on the soft magnetic properties has been studied. By two-step annealing method which the second annealing at low temperature of $310^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours is undertaken after the primary annealing at high temperature above $480^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes at the vacuum state, the coercive force and the squareness are not changed nearly but the initial permeability at d.c. and the effective permeability at a.c. are remark-ably increased compared with the one-step annealing. The maxima of the initial permeability and the effective permeability at 1 kHz after the two-step annealing are 290,000 and 41,000, respectively, which are 30% higher than those of the one-step annealing. The change of magnetic properties with annealing temperature is discussed in terms of the residual stress, the domain size, the cluster and the crystalline phase.

  • The possibilities of producing Al-10%Ti-4%Fe composites through in-situ processing and thus achieving mechanical property improvements over binary Al-10%Ti to a level or higher exhibited by PM SiC/A12124 composites were explored in this study. The microstructure of in-situ processed Al-10%Ti-4%Fe composites was similar to that of Al matrix composites reinforced with discontinuous SiC particulates(SiC/A12124) and significant enhancements in elastic modulus, tensile strength and wear resistance were observed as compared to Al-10%Ti alloy. These results can be attributed to the in-situ formed Al. Fe by third element addition, leading to additional dispersion strengthening effect over $Al_3Ti$ phase reinforcement in Al-Ti system.

  • High pressure die casting is one of the precision casting methods. It is highly productivity and suitable for manufacturing components with complex shapes and accurate dimensions. Recently, there has been increasing demand for efficient heat dissipation components, to control the heat generated by devices, which directly affects the efficiency and life of the product. Die cast aluminum alloys with high thermal conductivity are especially needed for this application. In this study, the influence of elements added to the die cast aluminum alloy on its thermal conductivity was evaluated. The results showed that Mn remarkably deteriorated the thermal conductivity of the aluminum alloy. When Cu content was increased, the tensile strength of cast aluminum alloy increased, showing 1 wt% of Cu ensured the minimum mechanical properties of the cast aluminum. As Si content increased, the flow length of the alloy proportionally increased. The flow length of aluminum alloy containing 2 wt% Si was about 85% of that of the ALDC12 alloy. A heat dissipation component was successfully fabricated using an optimized composition of Al-1 wt%Cu-0.6 wt%Fe-2 wt%Si die casting alloy without surface cracks, which were turned out as intergranular cracking originated from the solidification contraction of the alloy with Si composition lower than 2 wt%.
