  • High nitrogen steels (HNS) exhibit both high strength and ductility during tensile deformation. In the present study the Fe-18Cr-14Mn-4Ni-0.9N high nitrogen steel was heat treated at $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$ to produce $Cr_2N$ precipitates in austenite matrix and full austenite microstructures, respectively. Tensile tests of the heat treated specimens were performed at two different strain rates of 0.05/sec and 0.00005/sec. Each tensile curve of the specimens could be well characterized by the the modified Ludwik equation. Plastic deformation of the steel was adequately represented by the four parameters of the modified Ludwik equation. At 0.05/s strain rate, the specimen with the $Cr_2N$ precipitate exhibited higher strength than the full austenite specimen, while the full austenite specimen showed better mechanical properties at 0.00005/s strain rate. It was found that the $Cr_2N$ precipitates influences deformation behavior of the high nitrogen steel significantly.

  • $CO_2$ corrosion product scales formed on 13 Cr tubing steel in autoclave and in the simulated corrosion environment of oil field are investigated in the paper. The surface and cross-section profiles of the scales were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the chemical compositions of the scales were analyzed using energy dispersion analyzer of X-ray (EDAX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to confirm the corrosion mechanism of the 13 Cr steel in the simulated $CO_2$ corrosion environment. The results show that the corrosion scales are formed by the way of fashion corrosion, consist mainly of four elements, i.e. Fe, Cr, C and O, and with a double-layer structure, in which the surface layer is constituted of bulky and incompact crystals of $FeCO_3$, and the inner layer is composed of compact fine $FeCO_3$ crystals and amorphous $Cr(OH)_3$. Because of the characteristics of compactness and ionic permeating selectivity of the inner layer of the corrosion product scales, 13 Cr steel is more resistant in $CO_2$ corrosion environment.

  • In order to improve thermal efficiency of the fossil fuel power plants, we need to develop advanced materials with superior durability in the ultra-super critical state, which requires surface modifications for superior surface properties. In this study, we coated the Incoloy 901 and 12-17Cr steels for turbine buckets and valves with nitriding, boriding, and $Cr_3C_2-NiCr$ HVOF(high velocity oxygen flow) method. Then the samples were heat treated at $650^{\circ}C$ for 100 hours in vacuum. We analyzed the evolution behaviors of nitrides such as $Fe_3N,\;Fe_4N$, and CrN and borides such as FeB and $Fe_2B$ with XRD and SEM/EDS by comparing hardnesses and compositions of the coated layers before and after the heat treatments.

  • We investigated the crystallographic and magnetic properties of double perovskite $Sr_2Fe_{l-x}Cr_{x}MoO_{6}$ (x=0.0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, and 0.10). Mossbauer spectra of the $Sr_2Fe_{l-x}Cr_{x}MoO_{6}$ have been taken at various temperatures ranging from 15 to 415 K. As the temperature increased towards $T_{c}$(415 K), the Mossbauer spectra showed line broadening and 1, 6 and 3, 4 line-width differences because of anisotropic hyperfine field fluctuation. The Mossbauer spectra indicated that an anisotropic field fluctuation of +H ( $P_{+}$=0.85) was greater than that of -H ($P_{-}$=0.15). We also calculated the field fluctuation frequency factors and the temperature dependence of anisotropy energies from its relaxation rate. We interpreted the effect of Cr ($t^3$$_{2g}$) doping as a decrease in the anisotropy energy.

  • The improved high-performance Fe-based perovskite-type oxides ($La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}M_xFe_{1-x}O_3$, M = Cu, Cr, Ni) were synthesized by a citrate method and characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD and NMR spectroscopy analyses. The characterization analyses revealed that the stoichiometric amounts of lattice oxygen were existed in all of perovskite samples except for a nickel-doped perovskite. Fe-based perovskites exhibited a surprising result for ortho-para $H_2$ spin conversion reaction, indicating two orders of magnitude higher conversions and conversion rates than commercial $Fe_2O_3$. It was considered that this conversion difference might be attributed to the presence of oxygen vacancies in Fe-based perovskites prepared in this study.

  • The boiler tubes of X20CrMoV12.1 used in fossil-fired power plants were obtained and analyzed for the effect of water treatment on the steam corrosion-induced oxide scale in an effort to better understand the oxide formation mechanism, as well as pertinent method of maintenance and lifetime extension. The specimens were analyzed using various microscopy and microanalysis techniques, with focuses on the effect of water treatment on the characters of scale. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the scales of specimens were composed of hematite ($Fe_2O_3$), magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$), and chromite ($FeCr_2O_4$). Electron backscatter diffraction analysis showed that the oxides were present in the following order on the matrix: outer $Fe_2O_3$, intermediate $Fe_3O_4$, and inner $FeCr_2O_4$. After all volatile treatment or oxygenated treatment, a dense protective $Fe_2O_3$ layer was formed on the $Fe_3O_4$ layer of the specimen, retarding further progression of corrosion.

  • The effect of pressure cycling of $Zr_{0.9}Ti_{0.1}Cr_{0.7}Fe_{1.3}$ on the hydrogenation properties was investigated using the P-C-Isotherm curves and hydrogen absorption rate curves in the isotherm condition. The reversible hydrogen absorption capacity was decreased about 45 % after 3300 cycles. In the case of activated sample, the rate controlling steps of hydriding reaction changed from the surface reaction to the hydrogen diffusion process through hydride phase sequentially as reaction proceeded. After 3300 cycles, the sequential change of rate controlling step was same as activated one. However, the hydrogen absorption rate significantly decreased. It is suggested that the degradation of $Zr_{0.9}Ti_{0.1}Cr_{0.7}Fe_{1.3}$ can be interpreted with the formation of $ZrFe_3$ phase at the particle surface.

  • The new amorphous intermetallic compounds, M3(AsTe3)2: M=Cr, Co, Fe, were synthesized by the precipitation reaction of the Zintl anion AsTe33- with the divalent transition metal halides in aqueous solution and analyzed by EDS equipped with SEM and PIXE. The empirical formula of the specimens was found to be Fe3.0As1.8Te5.9, Co3.0As2.1Te6.5, and Cr3.0As2.0Te6.9 by the quantitative elemental analysis. The dc specific resistivity of the materials was measured as a function of temperature in the range from 20 to 300 K, in which their resistivity of Cr3(AsTe3)2 was largely dependent on temperature, while those of Co3(AsTe3)2 and Fe3(AsTe3)2 were only slightly dependent on temperature. To characterize the spin glass state of the specimens, the ac and dc magnetic susceptibility were measured and it was found that Co3(AsTe3)2 and Fe3(AsTe3)2 undergo a transition to a spin glass state at 6 K and 38 K, respectively. Magnetization data are reported as both thermal remanent magnetization (TRM) and isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) as a function of magnetizing field and temperature.

  • Microstructural properties of as-grown and annealed CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy (HEA) oxynitride thin films were investigated. The CoCrFeMnNi HEA oxynitride thin film was grown by magnetron sputtering method using an air gas, and annealed under the argon plus air flow for 5 h at $800^{\circ}C$. The as-grown film was homogeneous and uniform composed of nanometer-sized crystalline regions mixed with amorphous-like phase. The crystalline phase in the as-grown film was face centered cubic structure with the lattice constant of 0.4242 nm. Significant microstructural changes were observed after the annealing process. First, it was fully recrystallized and grain growth happened. Second, Ni-rich region was observed in nanometer-scale range. Third, phase change happened and it was determined to be $Fe_3O_4$ spinel structure with the lattice constant of 0.8326 nm. Hardness and Young's modulus of the as-grown film were 4.1 and 150.5 GPa, while those were 9.4 and 156.4 GPa for the annealed film, respectively.

  • Cation exchange capacity of clay, white clay and zeolite was estimated by performing the powder adsorption test for 6 different heavy metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn) standard solutions whose concentrations were varied by 5,10,15 and 20 ppm. The adsorption rate of heavy metals decreased with increasing the concentration of standard heavy metal solutions. The adsorption rate of the clay and the white clay showed more than 80% for the all tested heavy metals except Cr and especially above 99% for the Fe and the Pb. The Cr adsorption rate of the mixture of the clay and the white clay increased, however, that of Zn decreased. The adsorption rate of Cr and Zn showed relatively lower values as compared with those of the other heavy metals because the cation exchange H$\^$+/ ions and heavy metal ions of the clay or the white clay were in competition at low pH region.
