Mineralogical and Geochemical Changes During the Reaction of Cr(VI) with Organic Carbon (6가 크롬과 유기탄소와의 반응에 따른 광물학적 지구화학적 변화)

  • A column experiment was carried out to study the reaction of Cr(VI) with organic carbon. Chemical analysis for the effluent collected at different times after the reaction of Cr(VI) with organic carbon in compost and SEM observation for the solid samples remaining after the reaction were conducted. Cr(VI) supplied to the column was not detected in the effluent from column at initial stage, but the concentration of Cr(VI) increased abruptly and maintained the initial supplied concentration (20 mg/kg), indicating that Cr(VI) was effectively removed from the solution at the first state. In general, the concentrations of cations and anions with the exception of $PO_4$ increased and decreased again. Considering that most of these ions were not detected or showed very low concentration, these ions are considered to originate from the organic carbon in the column. SEM observation showed that Cr was coprecipitated with Fe on the surface of organic carbon with small amount of other metals such as Mn, No, and Co. This indicated that on the reduction condition on the organic carbon, Cr(VI) was reduced to $Cr(OH)_3$ and coprecipitated with $Fe(OH)_3$, and that Fe is very important in the precipitation of Cr. After the soluble Fe and Mn are not dissolved any more, $Cr(OH)_3$ is not precipitated. Different from other ions, the concentrations of $PO_4$ decreased and increased, which was thought to be the result of the release of $PO_4$ from organic carbon and sorption on the precipitates. After the maximum sorption on the precipitates and no further release of Fe, the concentration of $PO_4$ returns to its original value measured for the ones released from the organic carbon.

Studies on Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometric Analysis of Hexavalent Chromium in Waste Water by Solvent Extraction (용매 추출법에 의한 폐수중 6가크롬의 원자흡수 분광분석에 관한 연구)

  • Atomic absorption spectrophotometric (AAS) determination of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] in a waste water was studied. Cr(VI) was extracted with p-xylene from the wastewater, in the way of ion pair formation with anion exchanger aliquat-336(tri-caprylmethyl ammonium chloride). 100ml waste water, after organic materials were extracted out with toluene, was acidified with conc. HCl adjusting the medium to pH 0.5 and 20ml of p-xylene containing 0.01M aliguat-336 was used to extract Cr(VI) from the acidified solution. The absorbance of chromium was measured with air-acetylene flame at 357.9nm. Standard addition method was used in the determining concentration of Cr(VI) extracted. No interference has been found in the extraction of Cr(VI) by the Al(III), Fe(III) and Cr(III) ion presented. However, Fe(II) decreased the absorbance of Cr(VI), due to the fact Fe(II) reduces Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The contained organic material was removed prior to extracting process, since it may reduced the absorbance of Cr(VI). The recovery of added Cr(VI) was over 96%, which seems to be promising and the relative standard deviation was 3.95%

The Effect of Additional Elements and Grain Size Distribution on the Magnetic Properties of the Nd-Fe-B Sintered Magnets (Nd-Fe-B계 소결자석의 자기적 특성에 미치는 첨가원소와 결정립 분포의 영향)

  • The influence of casting cooling rate during the preparation of ingots on the grain size distribution and the magnetizing ability of $\textrm{Nd}_{16}\textrm{Fe}_{72}\textrm{V}_{4}\textrm{B}_{8}$ sintered magnets were investigated. Sintered magnets prepared from copper mold which allow a higher cooling rate, show a smaller grain size distribution and god magnetizing ability. The effects of adding bride forming elements, such as Cr, Mn, Nb, and W on the magnetic properties of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets were also investigated. Both Cr and W addition increase coercivity and the resultant $\textrm{Nd}_{16}\textrm{Fe}_{72}\textrm{Cr}_{4}\textrm{B}_{9}$ alloy exhibits a similar magnetizing ability in comparison with $\textrm{Nd}_{16}\textrm{Fe}_{72}\textrm{V}_{4}\textrm{B}_{8}$ alloy.

Cr(VI) Removal from Artificial Groundwater by Granular Activated Carbon and Regeneration of the Spent Carbon (입상활성탄을 이용한 인공 조제 지하수내의 Cr(VI) 제거와 그 활성탄의 재생)

  • Removal of hexavalent chromium from artificial groundwater (AGW) by granular activated carbon (GAC) was investigated in batch and continuous-flow column studies. Experimental parameters that were examined included solution pH, presence of dissolved oxygen (DO), and GAC pretreatment with Fe(II). As the solution pH increased from 4 to 7.5, the amount of Cr(VI) removed by both GACs decreased significantly. Exclusion of DO from the experimental systems resulted in greater removal of Cr(VI) from solution, possibly as a result of reduction to Cr(III). However, pretreatment of the GAC with a reductant (Fe(II)) did not improve Cr(VI) removal. Equilibration With 0.01 M $K_2$$HPO_4$[to extract adsorbed Cr(VI)] followed by a wash with 0.02 N $K_2$$HPO_4$[to remove precipitated/sorbed Cr(III)] proved to be a viable approach for the regeneration of carbons whose Cr(VI) removal capacities had been exhausted. The performance of the regenerated carbons exceeded that of the virgin carbons, primarily because of the favorable adsorption of Cr(VI) at lower pH values and the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III), The presence of Cr(III) in acid wash solutions provides direct evidence that Cr(VI) is reduced to Cr(III) in GAC systems under relatively acidic conditions. GAC performance over five complete cycles was consistently high, which suggests that such a system will be able to function over many operation cycles without deleterious effects.

  • In this study, microstructure and mechanical properties and electrical conductivities of in situ Cu-Fe-Xi(Xi=Ag, Cr or Co) alloy wires obtained by cold drawing combined with intermediate heat treatments have investigated. During cold working the primary and secondary dendrite arms are aligned along the drawing direction and elongated into filaments after deformation processing. The addition of Ag was found to be more effective in reducing the microstructural scale at the given draw ratio than that of Co or Cr throughout the drawing processing. The ultimate tensile strength and the conductivity of the Cu-Fe based composites containing Ag were higher than those of Cu-Fe composites containing Co or Cr. The good mechanical and electrical properties of Cu-Fe-Ag wires may be associated with the more uniform distribution of the finer filaments in the wires containing silver. The strength of Cu-Fe-Xi composites is dependent on the spacing of the Fe filaments in accord with a Hall-Petch relationship. The fracture surfaces of all the specimens showed ductile-type fracture and iron filaments occasionally observed on the fracture surfaces.

  • Fe based SOFC(Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) interconnector was fabricated by using the spark plasma sintering process and its microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated in this study. To fabricate the interconnector, the Fe-26Cr powder was mixed with the Ag (5, 10, 20wt.%) particles. In the Fe-26Cr-Ag sintered bodies, the Ag particles were almost dispersed at the grain boundary of the Fe-26Cr. The sintered bodies have the density of 87.2-97.5%, the density increases with increasing Ag content at sintering temperature of $850^{\circ}C$. Also, the compressive yield strength increases with increasing Ag content at the same sintering temperature.

  • Effects of Cr, Ni and W on the anodic polarization behavior were investigated for Fe-Cr-Ni-W alloys in deaerated 1N HCI solution. Surface films formed on the polarization were analysed using AES, SEM and EDAX. A higerconcentration of tungten was found in the surface oxide film compared to the matrix. It played an importanet role on incresing the stability of the passive film. The presence of an adequate amount of Cr was essential to increase the pitting resistance of the alloys in acid chloride media. Under 12 wt%cr,alloys containing 6wt%W did not exhidit any passivity at all. The main role of Ni was to control the microstructure rather than to modify the corrosion resistance. In 23 cr-14Ni-^W alloy, the duplex microstructure of ferrite($\delta$-phase) in an austenic matrix was developed. The reson why proferred pitting appeared in austenite and ferrite/austenite interface was that ferrite had more amount of Cr and W than austenite.

Effects of Cr and Ni on Damping Capacity and Corrosion Resistance of Fe-17%Mn Alloy (Fe-17%Mn 합금의 진동감쇠능 및 내식성에 미치는 Cr, Ni 첨가의 영향)

  • Effects of Cr and Ni addition on damping capacity, mechanical property, and corrosion resistance of Fe-17%Mn martensitic alloy have been studied. Martensite start temperature($M_{S}$) of the alloy decreases linearly with increasing Cr and Ni contents up to 15%. The damping capacity decreases gradually from 27 to 22% in specific damping capacity(SDC) with increasing Cr and Ni contents from zero to 10%, and decreases rapidly with further Cr and Ni content in Fe-17%Mn alloy. The tensile strength of the alloy maintains a level of 60 $kgf/mm^{2}$ regardless of Cr content with an elongation of 20 to 25%. But, in case of Fe-17%Mn-x%Ni alloy, the tensile strength decreased rapidly with the Ni content of above 10% because of austenite morphology. Immersion test in 5% NaCl solution leads to the result that the corrosion resistance of the alloy becomes excellent above 10% Cr. From the above results, it is concluded that the optimum Cr content to improve the mechanical property and corrosion resistance of the alloy in 5%NaCl solution with a lesser decrease in damping capacity is about 10%. In the case of 5% $H_{2}SO_{4}$ condition, the Fe-17%Mn-10%Ni is an optimum alloy.

  • Cr 함량이 alloy 600과 alloy 690의 Cr함량 사이에 위치하는 Ni-Cr-Fe 합금을 진공유도 용해법을 이용하여 제조하였다. 합금 인고트에 대하여 열간 가공성 시험을 수행하여 열간 압연 조건을 구하였다. 열간 및 냉간 압연을 거친 시편을 900~120$0^{\circ}C$ 사이의 여러 온도에서 소둔 열처리하였고, 열처리한 시편에 대하여 기계적 특성과 부식특성을 측정, 분석하였다. Cr 함량은 기계적 강도에는 다소 영향을 미치는 것이 발견되었으나 연신율에는 거의 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 부식속도는 Cr 함량 변화보다 소둔 열처리 온도에 따라 증가하였으며, 110$0^{\circ}C$ 에서 열처리한 경우에는 부식속도가 얼마간 감소하는 것으로 나타났다.
