In this study, the antioxidative effects and inhibitory effects on tyrosinase and elastase of Sorbus commixta (S. commixta) twig extracts were investigated. The aglycone fraction of S. commixta twig extract showed the prominent free radical (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH) scavenging activity($FSC_{50}$, $13{\mu}g/mL$). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activities of S. commixta twig extracts on ROS generated in $Fe^{3+}-EDTA/H_2O_2$ system were investigated by the luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay. The 50 % ethanol extract among extracts showed the most prominent ROS scavenging activity ($OSC_{50}$, $0.189{\mu}g/mL$). The cellular protective effects of extract/fractions of S. commixta twig on the rose-bengal sensitized photohemolysis of human erythrocytes were investigated. The 50 % ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction showed the cellular protective effects against ROS in a concentration dependent manner ($5{\sim}50{\mu}g/mL$). The inhibitory effect of S. commixta twig extract on tyrosinase was investigated to assess the whitening efficacy. The ethyl acetate ($IC_{50}$, $113.2{\mu}g/mL$) and aglycone fraction($IC_{50}$, $105.3{\mu}g/mL$) on tyrosinase showed more remarkable inhibitory effect than arbutin($IC_{50}$, $226.88{\mu}g/mL$), known as the whitening agent. The inhibitory effect of aglycone fraction ($IC_{50}$, $6.9{\mu}g/mL$) on elastase was simillar to quercetin($IC_{50}$, $6.1{\mu}g/mL$), flavonoid known as reference compound. These results indicate that extract/fractions of S. commixta twig can function as antioxidants in biological systems, particularly skin exposed to UV radiation by scavenging $^1O_2$ and other ROS, and protect cellular membranes against ROS. S. commixta twig extracts can be applicable to new functional cosmetics for anti-aging products.
Two types of onions cultivated with different methods of sulfur application (designated as S-1 and S-2) were examined for their physicochemical and sensory properties, and then compared with onions without sulfur application as a control. During cultivation, dietary sulfur methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) was sprayed on the leaves twice starting at 2 months before harvest, with one month intervals for S-1. For S-2, the MSM was applied once onto surface soils before sowing, and then once again on the leaves at 2 months before harvest. Thiosulfinate, a major sulfur-containing compound in onions, increased in the order of control, S-1, and S-2, without noticeable differences in the strength of spicy hot taste and flavor. The S-2 onions demonstrated a total reducing capacity three times higher than control and S-1 did. It indicates that the application of sulfur would positively affect the quality of onions under the condition where sufficient time is given for soil mineralization.
In the ancient iron-making process, a slag former was often added so that iron and other minerals in the ore could be smoothly separated. However, there are insufficient data for judging whether a slag former was added. Thus, in this study, we conducted a smelting experiment to understand the material characteristics of a steel structure that differed depending on the addition of a slag former. It was found that the steel structure produced in the first experiment had a total Fe content of 39.45-52.94 wt%, which decreased to 34.89-38.92 wt% in the second and third experiments. CaO compounds such as calcite, gehlenite, and hercynite appeared, in addition to iron oxides, after the addition of a slag former. As a result of an assessment of whether a slag former was added by comparing the ratio between the components, it was found that the ratio of $CaO/SiO_2$ was 0.42. From a comparative analysis of $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ and $CaO/SiO_2$, it was judged that the ratio of $Al_2O_3$ and $SiO_2$ can be utilized as an index to judge similar systems of smelting process (ore, furnace wall, and fuel).

The purpose of this study was carried out to investigate the cause of sulfur dioxide occurrence, general element composition, sulfur compounds, heavy metals, macro- & micro-minerals, and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) following baking time course of RS (RS1, RS2, RS3, and RS4) and mudflat solar salts (MSS). Sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) and sulfite ($SO{_3}^{2-}$) were not detected in MSS or RS. However, sulfate ($SO{_4}^{2-}$) content significantly decreased in RS (29,878.15~36,097.45 ppm) compared to that in MSS (35,601.65 ppm). ORP was 181.15 mV in MSS, and 58.55 mV in RS1. Moisture content was 9.34% in MSS and 0.00% in RS with increased NaCl (94.77~95.77%). Moisture and NaCl contents showed no significant difference in RS. Insoluble and sandy residues were higher in RS than in MSS, whereas Ca and K showed no significant difference. Mg and Cl contents were higher in RS than in MSS. Br level was higher in MSS (628.1 ppm) than in RS (512.72~586.62 ppm), but there was no significant difference in $NO_3$. Heavy metals (Pb, As, and Hg) were more abundant in RS than in MSS, but levels were still safe. These results suggest that MSS and RS may increase protection against from $SO_2$ and $SO{_3}^{2-}$.

This study was worked out to investigate antioxidant activity of solvent extracts from wild grape skin by measuring electron donating ability (EDA), reducing power, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and nitrite scavenging ability. Total phenolic compound and flavonoids contents were the highest in ethyl acetate extract, $54.4{\pm}1.18\;mg/100\;g$ and $645.1{\pm}5.05\;mg/100\;g$, respectively. The EDA and reducing power of solvent extracts from wild grape skin were proportionally increased with concentration and ethyl acetate extract $(79.2{\pm}0.06%)$ showed the stronger than BHT $(74.1{\pm}0.15%)$ at concentration of $100\;{\mu}g/mL$, especially. SOD-like ability of ethyl acetate $(25.1{\pm}0.41%)$ and butanol $(20.2{\pm}0.13%)$ extracts were stronger than other extracts at concentration of $100\;{\mu}g/mL$. TBARS of ethyl acetate extract was higher than ascorbic acid. Nitrite scavenging ability of solvent extracts from wild grape skin (pH 2.5, $1000\;{\mu}g/mL$) were in order of ethyl acetate $(90.5{\pm}0.75%)$>butanol $(65.9{\pm}2.16%)$>hexane $(58.1{\pm}1.74%)$>chloroform $(55.4{\pm}1.02%)$>water $(40.9{\pm}0.35%)$. Antioxidant activity of solvent extracts from wild grape skin was the highest in ethyl acetate extract from the results of our experiments.
Epoxy composites with concentrations of 5-70 wt% of silica particles were prepared in order to improve mechanical property and poor thermal stability. The mechanical and thermal properties were investigated and compared to the corresponding properties of neat epoxy composite. Furthermore, the effects of silane compound treatment on silica particles were observed by the experimental results of the tensile strength, glass transition temperature, and thermal stability of epoxy composite. Tensile strength of epoxy composites was measured by universal testing machine (UTM) and after that, the structure and morphology analysis of epoxy nanocomposites were analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The increased solid content of CA0030 particle improved the tensile strength of epoxy/ modified composites to give 30-50 MPa. The thermal expansion coefficients (CTE) of neat epoxy resin and epoxy/silica composites measured with a thermomechanical analyzer (TMA) showed that the incorporation of silica particles was helpful to reduce the CTE of neat epoxy resin.
This study investigates the antioxidant activities of wild grape seed (Vitis coignetiea seed) extracts by solvents. Organic extracts of hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol were obtained from the ethanol extracts of wild grape seed (Vitis coignetiea seed). Total phenolic compound contents of extracts from wild grape seed (Vitis coignetiea seed) by solvents were the highest in ethyl acetate extract, 64.9 mg/100 g. Electron donating abilities of organic solvent fraction obtained from 80% ethanol extracts of wild grape seed were proportionally increased with concentration, and the ethyl acetate extract(90.0%) showed stronger activities than BHT and Ascorbic acid at concentration of $100\;{\mu}L$/mL. Reducing power of organic solvent fraction obtained from 80% ethanol extracts of wild grape seed was the highest in the ethyl acetate extract(2.83) at concentration of $1,000\;{\mu}L$/mL. TBARS of the ethyl acetate extract was highest. Nitrite scavenging ability of organic solvent fraction obtained from 80% ethanol extracts of wild grape seed(pH 1.2, $1,000\;{\mu}L$/mL) was the highest in ethyl acetate extract(76.9%).
Arsenic (As) contamination in groundwater is one of the main problems in Bangladesh. As toxicity causes serious human health problems such as edema, skin cancer, bladder cancer, lung cancer, hyperkeratosis, premature birth, and black foot disease. As contamination in groundwater mainly originates from the geological characteristics of the area due to the influence of anthropogenic activities. Since most of the people in Bangladesh rely on tube well for drinking water, it is necessary to investigate the current status of As pollution and identify the treatment technologies that can be used to provide arsenic-free drinking water in water-scarce areas. A total of 92 papers were reviewed in this study to present a complete overview of the recent status of groundwater As contamination in Bangladesh and different low-cost remediation technologies. A method for evaluating the relative feasibility of different treatment technologies was also utilized to determine the most appropriate technologies for groundwater As treatment in Bangladesh. The districts with the highest groundwater As contamination include Brahamanbariya, Tangail, Barisal, Pabna, Patuakhali, Kurigram, Magura, and Faridpur, with concentrations exceeding 0.05 mg/L. Only six districts had relatively low groundwater arsenic concentrations (0.01 mg/L), including Kushtia, Khagrachari, Jessore, Dinajpur, Meherpur, and Munshiganj. There were a number of technologies used for treating As in water, but aerated electrocoagulation, Mg-Fe-based hydrotalcite-like compound, and electro-chemical As remediation (ECAR) reactor were found to be the most feasible treatment methods for As. Overall, the investment, operational, and maintenance costs, availability of materials, and expertise requirements should be considered when selecting the most appropriate treatment method for As in water.
Adsorptive removal of tetrahydrothiophene (THT) and tert-butylmercaptan (TBM) that were widely used sulfur odorants in pipeline natural gas was studied using various ion-exchanged NaY zeolites at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. In order to improve the adsorption ability, ion exchange was performed on NaY zeolites with alkali metal cations of $Li^+,\;Na^+,\;K^+$ and transition metal cations of $Cu^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Co^{2+},\;Ag^+$. Among the adsorbents tested, Cu-NaY and Ag-NaY showed good adsorption capacities for THT and TBM. These good behaviors of removal of sulfur compound for Cu-NaY and Ag-NaY zeolites probably was influenced by their acidity. The adsorption capacity for THT and TBM on the best adsorbent Cu-NaY-0.5, which was ion exchanged with 0.5 M copper nitrate solution, was 1.85 and 0.78 mmol-S/g at breakthrough, respectively. It was the best sulfur capacity so far in removing organic sulfur compounds from fuel gas by adsorption on zeolites. While the desorption activation energy of TBM on the Cu-NaY-0.5 was higher than NaY zeolite, the difference of THT desorption activation energy between two zeolites was comparatively small.
We investigated the effects of Al and Mg on the microstructure and hardness of the coating layer of galvanized steel sheets, by thermodynamic calculations, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Vickers hardness tests of Zn-0.2Al, Zn-6Al-2Mg, and Zn-10Al-5Mg coating layers. Regardless of the alloy composition of the galvanizing bath, a Fe-Al layer was observed between the coating layer and steel sheet. The Zn-0.2Al coating layer consists of major h.c.p. Zn phase and minor f.c.c. Al phase. The fraction of f.c.c. Al phase (containing a significant amount of Zn) of the coating layer increases with increasing the chemical composition of Al of the galvanizing bath. The h.c.p. MgZn2 phase was formed in the Al/Mg-containing Zn-6Al-2Mg and Zn-10Al-5Mg coating layers, forming Zn-Al-MgZn2 eutectic microstructure. The primary MgZn2 phase was additionally formed in the Zn-10Al-5Mg coating layers containing high concentrations of Al and Mg. The Vickers hardness values of Zn-0.2Al, Zn-6Al-2Mg, and Zn-10Al-5Mg coating layers were 59.1 ± 1.2 HV, 161.2 ± 5.7 HV, and 215.5 ± 40.3 HV, respectively. The addition of Al and Mg increased the hardness of the coating layer by increasing the fraction of the Al phase (containing Zn) and MgZn2 intermetallic compound, which were harder than the Zn phase.
