  • This paper presents an assessment method in integrity of the windings in cast resin molded transformers by using vertical analysis of thermal distribution. The proposed method is to compare the temperature distribution in a sound specimen with that in the faulted specimen with a layer to layer short circuit. Temperature distribution was acquired by an infrared thermography system, and the Arrhenius equation was adopted to the accelerated test. The proposed method can be used to detect the failures in the transformers.

  • In this paper, the digital distance relay of transmission lines under fault conditions is discussed. Distance relay is used to protect transmission lines. The principle of distance relay is well-known ; the impedance measured by a relay is Proportional to the distance from the relay to the fault. Hence, by measuring the impedance, it can be determined whether the line is faulted or not. Unfortunately, the measurement of the fault distance is distorted by Mutual Coupling. To implement more reliable and practical digital distance relay, the mutual coupling effect has to be considered.

  • Core support barrel (CSB) assembly is one of the most important reactor internals structures supporting and protecting the nuclear core during normal operation and faulted events. For Yonggwang 3 and 4 (YGN 3&4), the adequacy of the analytical response prediction of reactor internals for flow induced vibration was demonstrated through the comprehensive vibration assessment program (CVAP) performed during hot functional test. Besides, the vibration characteristics of the CSB of operating nuclear power plant can be examined via the excore neutron noise monitoring signal. In this paper data from YGN 4 analyses, CVAP, and neutron noise monitoring system are compared and evaluated. In general, the results are comparable each other and conservative enough to ensure sufficient design margin and structural integrity. Further investigations on the modelling and analyses procedure are recommended to utilize the experimental results to the maximum extent. And collection of the neutron noise data is desired to serve as a baseline information.

  • This paper represents a case study to determine optimal rock properties and to analyse the safety of slopes excavated in faulted and severly weathered ground. The study site consists of two slopes with a length of 240m and a height of 30m in contact with a tunnel. Significant efforts have been exerted for determining the proper strength parameters such as cohesion and internal friction of rockmass by back analyses as well as laboratory and in-situ tests. Limit equilibrium analyses have also been conducted using these properties.

  • Most faults that occur on transmission lines are caused by extreme weather with lightning storms in the distance. These are not only prolongs the time of removing and recovering, but also increases economical damages. If faults can be precisely located, maintenance crews can reach them quickly, and remove the faults in time. So, the precise locating of the faulted point on a transmission line is very important to improve the system reliability, and decreases economic damages as an inherent consequence of long term outages. Also, fault location methods are becoming of much importance for utilities and research. In this paper, two single-terminal impedance-based fault location techniques will be investigated to show the reliability and evaluated the performance of reactance and Takagi method by using MATHCAD program simulations.

  • This paper presents an operation scheme to enhance the power system security by applying FACTS on Power systems. Three main generic types of FACTS devices are suggested an illustrated. Flow congestions over lines have been solved by controlling active power of series-compensated FACTS devices and low voltages at buses have been solved by controlling reactive power of shunt-compensated FACTS devices. Especially, Especially, UPFC has been applied in both line congestion and low voltages. Two kinds of indices which indicate the power system security level related to line flow and bus voltage are utilized in this paper. They have been minimized to enhance the power system security level through the iterative method and the sensitivity vector of security index is derived to determine the direction to minimum. The proposed algorithm has been tested on the IEEE 57-bus system with FACTS devices in a normal condition and a line-faulted contingency.

  • Since power systems tend to be more large and complex, expert system substituted for the decision-making achieved by the power system operation expert is required. So far, expert system has been used for fault diagonosis and voltage-reactive power control and so on. In the expert system developed using 'C' language, the faulted element is estimated using the AND operation of lists which are acquired from the information on operated relays. It is also considered to identify the misoperation of protective devices using CF(Certainty Factor), and operation failure of those using the data base of parameter group list. The developed expert system is applied to a 6-bus sample system and through the case studies. It is shown that the expert system is very useful.

  • In this paper, an auto-diagnosis method of the stator winding fault for small induction motor is suggested. 3-phase stator currents are sampled, filtered, and transformed with Park's vector transformation. After then Park's vector patterns are obtained. To detect the stator winding fault automatically, a distortion ratio is newly defined and compared with the one of healthy motor, and the threshold levels of distortion ratio are suggested. The 2-turn, 4-turn, 8-turn winding fault are tested with no load, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% rated load. The distortion ratio of the Park's vector patterns are increased as the increase of the faulted turns, but are same as the increase of the load.

  • Recently, There has been growing interest in Distributed Generations with high-energy efficiency due to the Increasing energy consumption and environmental pollution problems. but an insertion of Distributed Generations to existing power distribution system can cause several problems such as voltage variations, harmonics, protective coordination, increasing fault current etc, because of reverse power. This paper was applied to Sukumar M[l] proposal schemes and identity the faulted section performing short-circuit analysis by MATLAB program to distribution systems interconnected a large number of distributed generations.

  • According to the use of distribution automation systems, the function to find or to search a fault phase is necessary for automatic switches in a distribution substation. In this paper, two algorithms are developed to fine the fault circuit and the fault phase for the automatic switches in substation with ungrounded power system. One is the fault circuit searching method using the zero sequence voltage at the bus and zero sequence current of circuit current and the other is to find the fault phase using the line voltage and zero sequence current. The developed algorithms are tested in the case study simulations. An ungrounded power system is modeled by EMTP as a case study system. The developed algorithms are tested in the case study simulations and each shows correct results.
