  • The maximun short circuit current of modern power system is becoming so large that circuit breaker is not expected to be able to shut down the current in the future In order cut over-currents, a system composed of a superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) and traditional breaker seems to provide a promising solution for furture power operation. In present paper, three line-to-ground fault is assumed to happen at the center of 345kV transmission lines in a large capacity electric power system. The superconducting fault current limiter was represented using a commutation type, which consists of a non-inductive superconducting coil and current limiting element (resistor or reactor). from the viewpoint of current limiting performance, the prevention of the voltage drop at the load bus and comparision characteristics for two type SFCL. Desired design specification and operation parameters of SECL were also given qualitatively by the performance.

  • A new approach for prediction of a fault zone ahead of tunnel face by using statistical control charts is suggested and applied to the construction site. $x-R_s$ control charts of RMR parameters were investigated as approaching and passing through fault zone. The abnormal signal from the control charts was observed and analyzed based on statistical criteria. Fault zones in the application area were predicted in advance using this method and it was verified by comparing with observation data like horizontal boring and face mapping.

  • Seismic isolation is often used in protecting mission-critical structures including hospitals, data centers, telecommunication buildings, etc. Such structures typically house vibration-sensitive equipment which has to provide continued service but may fail in case sustained accelerations during earthquakes exceed threshold limit values. Thus, peak floor acceleration is one of the two main parameters that control the design of such structures while the other one is peak base displacement since the overall safety of the structure depends on the safety of the isolation system. And in case peak base displacement exceeds the design base displacement during an earthquake, rupture and/or buckling of isolators as well as bumping against stops around the seismic gap may occur. Therefore, obtaining accurate peak floor accelerations and peak base displacement is vital. However, although nominal design values for isolation system and superstructure parameters are calculated in order to meet target peak design base displacement and peak floor accelerations, their actual values may potentially deviate from these nominal design values. In this study, the sensitivity of the seismic performance of structures equipped with linear and nonlinear seismic isolation systems to the aforementioned potential deviations is assessed in the context of a benchmark shear building under different earthquake records with near-fault and far-fault characteristics. The results put forth the degree of sensitivity of peak top floor acceleration and peak base displacement to superstructure parameters including mass, stiffness, and damping and isolation system parameters including stiffness, damping, yield strength, yield displacement, and post-yield to pre-yield stiffness ratio.

  • The Yangsan fault system of Kyungsang Basin in the southeastern part of Korean peninsula is one of the most important structures in the peninsula. A number of strong earthquakes occurred in the vicinity of the fault. It was suggested that this fault can be divided into three segments: northern, central and southern ones. Earthquake data around the Yangsan fault were classified into two groups as incomplete and complete ones; the former is the data before the Choseon Dynasty and the latter is those since the dynasty. The maximum likelihood method was applied to compute seismicity parameters such as earthquake occurrence rates, b-values of frequency-magnitude relation and maximum possible magnitudes for each segment and the entire fault. These parameters show considerably different values from segment to segment. The b-value for the entire fault turned out to be 0.85 and maximum possible magnitudes for the northern, central and southern segments are 5.2, 6.8 and 6.0, respectively. The mean return periods for the maximum possible magnitudes for each segments are greater than 1000 years. In addition, according to the analysis of the frequency-magnitude relation, the occurrence pattern of earthquakes around the Yangsan fault show more similarity to the characteristic earthquake model than the Gutenberg-Richter model. The data for each segments are, however, too scarce to obtain any physically meaningful results.

  • This paper proposes a method for modeling new fault ground motion due to moderate size earthquakes in Stable Continental Regions (SCRs) for the first time. The near fault ground motion is characterized by a single long period velocity pulse of large amplitude. In order to model the velocity pulse, its period and peak amplitude need be determined in terms of earthquake magnitude and distance from the causative fault. Because there have been observed very few new fault ground motions, it is difficult to derive the model directly from the recorded data in SCRs. Instead an indirect approach is adopted in this work. The two parameters, the period and peak amplitude of the velocity pulse, are known to be functions of the rise time and the slip velocity. For Western United States (WUS) that belongs active tectonic regions, there art empirical formulas for these functions. The relations of rise time and slip velocity on the magnitude in SCRs are derived by comparing related data between Western United States and Central-Eastern United States that belongs to SCRs. From these relations, the functions of these pulse parameters for NFGM in SCRs can be expressed in terms of earthquake magnitude and distance. A time history of near fault ground motion of moderate magnitude earthquake in stable continental regions is synthesized by superposing the velocity pulse on the for field ground motion that is generated by stochastic method. As an demonstrative application, the response of a single degree of freedom elasto-plastic system is studied.

  • The sensitivities of a structural response due to variation of its design parameters are prerequisite in the majority of the algorithms used for fundamental problems in engineering as system uncertainties, identification and probabilistic assessments etc. The paper presents the concept of probabilistic sensitivity of suspension bridges with respect to near-fault ground motion. In near field earthquake ground motions, large amplitude spectral accelerations can occur at long periods where many suspension bridges have significant structural response modes. Two different types of suspension bridges, which are Bosporus and Humber bridges, are selected to investigate the near-fault ground motion effects on suspension bridges random response sensitivity analysis. The modulus of elasticity is selected as random design variable. Strong ground motion records of Kocaeli, Northridge and Erzincan earthquakes are selected for the analyses. The stochastic sensitivity displacements and internal forces are determined by using the stochastic sensitivity finite element method and Monte Carlo simulation method. The stochastic sensitivity displacements and responses obtained from the two different suspension bridges subjected to these near-fault strong-ground motions are compared with each other. It is seen from the results that near-fault ground motions have different impacts stochastic sensitivity responses of suspension bridges. The stochastic sensitivity information provides a deeper insight into the structural design and it can be used as a basis for decision-making.

  • In this paper, we present analytical and simulation models for evaluating the operation of a uniprocessor computer which utilizes a time redundant approach (such as recomputation by shilted operands) for lault-tolerant computing. In the proposed approach, all incoming jobs to the uniprocessor are duplicated, thus two versions 01 each job must be processed. Three methods for appropriately scheduling the primary and sL'Condary versions of the jobs are proposed and analyzed. The proposed scheduling methods take into account the load and the fault rate of the uniprocessor to evaluate two figures of merit for cost and profit with respect to a delay in response time due to faults and fault tolerance. Our model utilizes a fault-tolerant schedule according to which it is possible to find an optimal delay (given by $\kappa$) based on empiric parameters such as cost, the load and the fault rate of the uniprocessor.

  • Since the discovery of the high-temperature superconductors, many researches have been performed for the practical applications of superconductivity technologies in various fields. As results, significant progress has been achieved. Especially, Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) offers an attractive means to limit fault current in power systems. The SFCLS, in contrast to current limiting reactors or high impedance transformers, are capable of limiting short circuit currents without adding considerable voltage drop and energy loss to power systems during normal operation. Under fault conditions, a resistance is automatically inserted into the power grid to limit the peak short-circuit current by transition from the superconducting state to the normal state, the quench. The advantages, like fail safe operation and quick recovery, make SFCL very attractive, especially for rapidly growing power systems with higher short-circuit capacities. In order to verify the effectiveness of the SFCL, in this paper, the analysis of fault current and voltage stability assessment in a sample distribution system and a transmission system are performed by the PSCAD/EMTDC based simulation method. Through the simulation, the advantage of SFCL application is shown, and the effective parameters of the SFCL are also recommended for both distribution and transmission systems. A resistive type component of SFCL is adopted in the analysis. The simulation results demonstrate not only the effectiveness of the proposed simulation scheme but also SFCL parameter assessment technique.
