  • Since most of the Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission lines are untransposed and multi-circuits, errors are occurred inevitably because of the unbalanced impedances of the lines and so on. Therefore, a distance relaying algorithm applicable to the untransposed multi-circuits transmission lines needs to be developed. The proposed algorithm of fault location estimation in the paper uses the fundamental phasor to reduce the effects of the harmonics. This algorithm also analyzes the second-order difference of the phasor to calculate the traveling times of waves generated by faults. The traveling time of the waves generated by faults is derived from the second-order difference of the phasor. Finally, the distance from the relaying point to the faults is estimated using the traveling times. To analyze the performance of the algorithm, a power system with the EHV untransposed double-circuit transmission lines are modeled and simulated under various fault conditions such as several fault types, fault locations, fault inception angles and fault resistances. The results of the simulations show that the proposed algorithm has the capability to estimate the fault locations quickly and accurately.

  • This paper presents a numerical algorithm for fault location estimation which used to data from both end of the transmission line. The proposed algorithm is also based on the synchronized voltage and current phasor measured from the PMUs(Phasor Measurement Units) in the time-domain. This paper has separated from two part of with/without shunt capacitance(short/long distance). Most fault was arc one-ground fault which is 75% over [1]. so most study focused with it. In this paper, the numerical algorithm has calculated to distance for ground fault and line-line fault. In this paper, the algorithm is given with/without shunt capacitance using II parameter line model, simple impedance model and estimated using DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) and the LES(Least Error Squares Method). To verify the validity of the proposed algorithm, the EMTP(Electro- Magnetic Transient Program) and MATLAB did used.

  • Nowadays reactance method is being used as a technique for fault location in parallel feeding AC traction power system. However, implementation of this method requires a large number of field tests(ground fault) which is a huge burden on the operators. This paper presents a new estimation technique using quadratic interpolation to reduce number of times for field test and improves the accuracy of fault location. To verify a new technique, we solve AT feeding circuit and model it using PSCAD/EMTDC. Finally this paper conducts a comparative analysis of usefulness between a new technique and real field data.

  • A new diagnastic method for detection and location of faults in a linear time-invariant system is proposed. The fault detection algorithm is formulated in a signal space, while the fault location algorithm with estimation is done in a parameter space. In a way different from the conventional approach, the method of fault location with estimation is studied to apply the new concept to establish the models with an unknown parameter under the assumption of 1-fold fault. According to computer simulation, the proposed diagnostic method is effective as an algorithm for fault diagnosis of industdrial process controllers.

  • In AC feeding system, the fault location is calculated by using ratio of current absorbed in the neutral point of AT(Automatic Transformer) or by measuring reactance. In this way, however, an estimation error can be happened due to the many reasons. In addition, for measuring currents in the neutral point of AT, other measuring devices and communication equipments are additionally required. In order to solve the disadvantages, this paper suggests a novel technique using the distribution ratio of catenary current. The proposed technique uses existing protective relays and measures catenary current. With the measured data, we can calculate the distribution ratio of catenary current and determine fault location. Through the simulated results, we derived the correlation between current ratio and fault location. Using this technique, additional equipments and expenses can be reduced. Besides, fault location can be determined more correctly.

  • This paper describes extended fault location algorithm using estimated remote source impedance. The method uses data only at the local end and the sequence current distribution factors for more accurate estimation. The proposed algorithm can respond to variation of the local and remote source impedance. Therefore, this method is especially useful for transmission lines interconnected to a wind farm that the source impedance varies continuously. The proposed algorithm is very insensitive to the variation in fault distance and fault resistance. The simulation results have shown the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • An improved method for detecting fault distance in overhead transmission lines is described in this paper. Based on single-ended measurement, propagation theory of traveling waves together with the wavelet transform technique is used. In estimating fault location, a simple, but fundamental method using the time difference between the two consecutive peaks of transient signals is considered; however, a new method to enhance measurement sensitivity and its accuracy is sought. The algorithm is developed based on the lattice diagram for traveling waves. Representing both the ground mode and alpha mode of traveling waves, in a lattice diagram, several relationships to enhance recognition rate or estimation accuracy for fault location can be found. For various cases with fault types, fault locations, and fault inception angles, fault resistances are examined using the proposed algorithm on a typical transmission line configuration. As a result, it is shown that the proposed system can be used effectively to detect fault distance.

  • In case the fault occurs in AC power supply network, protective relaying system must selectively detect line-to-line/ground fault and immediately cut off the power flow into the fault location for guaranteeing the safety of people, electric vehicle and ground installation etc. It is the most important point in power system operation to minimize the fault duration by rapid trip scheme and accurate estimation of the fault location. In this paper, we analyze the load characteristics of each vehicle, perform the fault analysis of AC power supply network using AT current-ratio method. The result shows its usefulness.

  • This paper deals with an improved fault location algorithm with compensation ground capacitance through distributed parameter for a long parallel T/L. For the purpose of fault locating algorithm non-influenced by source impedance and fault resistance, the loop method was used in the system modeling analysis. This algorithm uses a positive and negative sequence of the fault current for high accuracy of fault locating calculation. Power system model of 160km and 300km long parallel T/L was simulated using EMTP software. To evaluate of the proposed algorithm, we used the several different cases 64 sampled data per cycle. The test results show that the proposed algorithm was minimized the error factor and speed of fault location estimation.

  • This paper describes the estimation method of cable fault location in rocket motors using M-sequence (Maximal Length Sequence). In order to estimate the location of a cable fault, three methods have been usually used: TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry), FDR (Frequency Domain Reflectometry), and TFDR (Time-Frequency Domain Reflectometry). However, these methods suffer the disadvantage of requiring users to be close to a test field, which is dangerous. The estimation method of cable fault location using M-sequence is proposed to solve this problem. The proposed method can make use of DAS (Data Acquisition System). The experiments were three cases: damaged, open, and short. The RG-58 coaxial cable was used in the experiments. As a result, the proposed method has better performance than that of conventional methods such as TDR and TFDR.
