This paper proposes technique to detect ground fault in railway high voltage distribution lines. Overcurrent relay technique is widely used for detecting one line ground fault that occurs most frequently in railway high voltage distribution lines. However, ground fault in distribution line is usually high impedance fault with arc. Because the fault current magnitude measured in substation is very small, the conventional overcurrent relay can't detect the high impedance ground fault. Therefore this paper proposes the advanced technique using wavelet transform. It extracts D1 component from fault signals and detects fault comparing magnitude of D1 component in each phase. To evaluate this proposed technique, we model distribution system using PSCAD/EMTDC and extract various fault data. In conclusion this technique can detect ground fault including high impedance fault regardless of fault distance, fault impedance etc.

High impedance fault(HIF) is defined as fault the general overcurrent relay can not detect or interrupt. Especially when HIF occur in residential areas, energized high voltage conductor results in fire hazard, equipment damage or personal threat. This paper proposes the model of the high impedance fault in transmission line using the ZnO arrester and resistance to be implemented within EMTP. The performance of the proposed model is tested on a typical 154[kV] korean transmission line system under various fault conditions. Wavelet transform is efficient and useful for the detection of high impedance fault in power system, because it uses variable windows according to frequency. In this paper, HIF detection method using wavelet transform can distinguish HIF form similar fault like arcfurance load, capacitor bank switching and line switching.

A fault location algorithm using estimated local source impedance after a fault is proposed in this paper. The method uses after fault data only at the local end. It uses the negative sequence current distribution factor for more accurate estimation. The proposed algorithm can keep up with the variation of the local source impedance. Therefore, the proposed algorithm especially is valid for a transmission line interconnected to a wind farm that the equivalent source impedance changes continuously. The performance of the proposed algorithm was verified under various fault conditions using the Simpowersystem of MATLAB Simulink. The proposed algorithm is largely insensitive to the variation in fault distance and fault resistance. The test results show a very high accurate performance.

The analysis of distribution line faults is essential to the proper protections of the power system. A high impedance fault test, which was carried in Korean electric power systems, it was found that a arcing phenomenon occurred during the high level portion of conductor voltage in each cycle. In this paper, we propose a new method for detection of high impedance faults, which uses the arcing fault current difference during high voltage and low voltage portion of conductor voltage waveform. To extract this difference, we diveded one cycle fault current into equal spanned four data windows according to the magnitude of voltage waveform and applied fast fourier transform(FFT) to each data window. The frequency spectrum of current wavefrom in each portion are used as the inputs of neural network and is trained to detect high impedance faults. The proposed method shows improved accuracy when applied to staged fault data and fault-like load.

This paper proposes an early diagnosis technique for the stator-turn fault (STF) in an interior permanent magnet (IPM)-type brushless DC (BLDC) motor using the impedance parameter. We have analyzed the varying characteristics owing to the STF through various experiments and the finite element method (FEM). As a result, we have presented a simple method for fault detection. This technique can be applied without requiring a fast Fourier transform (FFT) and the calculation of the negative-sequence impedance. The fault detection system works on the basis of the comparison the measured impedance with the database impedance. The variations in the characteristics owing to the STF as well as the proposed technique have been verified through the simulation and experiment.

This paper presents a discrete wavelet analysis based algorithm to address the fault impedance calculation under transient state in radial power distribution networks. The fault impedances have been derived under different fault conditions. Furthermore, a recursive fault distance estimation method is proposed utilizing the measured fault impedance and power line parameters. The proposed scheme can resolve the errors caused by the non-homogeneous power lines, the presence of lateral loads since, the fault impedance will always be updated with the recursive form. For the verification of the proposed scheme, a filed test has been peformed with varying fault resistances in the 22.9(kV) radial system. Power meters and fault locators were installed at the substation. It was figured out that the performance of the discrete wavelet and the recursive scheme are very good even for high fault resistance condition.
An accurate digital distance relaying algorithm which is immune to reactance effect of the fault resistance and the load current for phase-to-ground fault in 765kV untransposed transmission lines is proposed. The algorithm can estimate adaptively the impedance to a fault point independent of the fault resistance. To compensate the magnitude and phase of the apparent impedance, this algorithm uses the angle of an impedance deviation vector. The impedance correction algorithm for Phase-to-ground fault uses a voltage equation at fault point to compensate the fault current at fault point. A series of tests using EMTP output data in a 765kV untransposed transmission lines have proved the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

This paper presents a fault location algorithm based on the adaptively estimated value of the local sequence source impedance for faults on a parallel transmission line. This algorithm uses only the local voltage and current signals of a faulted circuit. The remote current signals and the zero-sequence current of the healthy adjacent circuit are calculated by using the current distribution factors together with the local terminal currents of the faulted circuit. The current distribution factors consist of local equivalent source impedance and the others such as fault distance, line impedance and remote equivalent source impedance. It means that the values of the current distribution factors can change according to the operation condition of a power system. Consequently, the accuracy of the fault location algorithm is affected by the two values of equivalent source impedances, one is local source impedance and the other is remote source impedance. Nevertheless, only the local equivalent impedance can be estimated in this paper. A series of test results using EMTP simulation data show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm is valid for a double-circuit transmission line system where the equivalent source impedance changes continuously.
