  • This article suggests an online-based remote fault current mode discrimination method in order to identify the causes of the power line faults with various causes. For that, it refers to existing cause identification methods and categorizes modes by fault causes based on statistical techniques beforehand and performs the pretreatment process of fault currents by each cause acquired from the fault recorder into a topological plane in order to extract the characteristics of fault currents by each cause. After that, for the fault mode categorization, it discriminates modes by each cause using data by each cause as leaning data through utilizing RBF network based on FCM allowing self-organization in deciding the middle layer. And then it tests the validity of the suggested method as applying it to the data of the actual fault currents acquired from the fault recorder in the electric power transmission center.

  • In this work, we investigated quench characteristics of matrix-type superconducting fault current limiters (MFCLs) according to the turn number of reactors. The reactors used in MFCLs apply magnetic field to superconducting elements within reactors when fault currents surge into MFCL systems. It makes the fast and simultaneous quenches between superconducting elements. Also reactors decrease the fault power burden of superconducting elements by bypassing the partial fault currents to itself, when quench occurs. These structure proposed in this work can be expected to achieve much more current limiting capacity even though it uses less superconductors compared with other type SFCLs. Three reactors were made by Bakelite. These reactors with the turn number of 190, 380 and 570, had the length of 270 mm and diameter of 80 mm. We reported experimental results, including fault currents, fault voltages and resistance in superconducting elements according to the turn number of reactors. We confirmed that experimental results will be useful in next future plan for the real power grid.

  • In this paper, an induction motor rotor fault diagnosis system using current signals, which are measured using the axis-transformation method is presented. Inverter-fed motor drives, unlike line-driven motor drives, have stator currents which are rich in harmonics and therefore fault diagnosis using stator current is not trivial. The current signals for rotor fault diagnosis need precise and high resolution information, which means the diagnosis system demands additional hardware such as a low pass filter, high resolution ADC, an encoder and additional hardware. Therefore, the proposed axis-transformation method is expected to contribute to a low cost fault diagnosis system in inverter-fed motor drives without the need for any additional hardware. In order to confirm the validity of the developed algorithms, various experiments for rotor faults are tested and the line current spectrum of each faulty situation, using the Park transformation, is compared with the results obtained from the FFT(Fast Fourier Transform).

  • In this paper, the induction motor rotor fault diagnosis system using current signals, which are measured using axis-transformation method, and speed, which is estimated using current information, are presented. In inverter-fed motor drives unlike line-driven motor drives the stator currents have numerous harmonics components and therefore fault diagnosis using stator currents is very difficult. The current and speed signal for rotor fault diagnosis needs to be precise. Also, high resolution information, which means the diagnosis system, demands additional hardware such as low pass filter, high resolution ADC, encoder and etc. Therefore, the proposed axis-transformation and speed estimation method are expected to contribute to low cost fault diagnosis systems in inverter-fed motor drives without the need for an encoder and any additional hardware. • Fault tolerant control algorithm fer heteropolar magnetic bearings are presented. This fault tolerant control utilizes grouping of currents as C-cores in order to isolate magnetic fluxes. Hardware requirements to maintain fault tolerant control are reduced since decoupling chokes are not required in this control scheme. The currents supplied to each pole are redistributed, if some coils (ail suddenly, such that the resultant magnetic forces should remain invariant through coil failure events. (omitted)

  • In this study, we propose a fault analysis method for a power distribution grid with PCS-based DERs. We first explain the characteristics of a PCS-based DER. According to the characteristics, the DER is considered as a current-controlled voltage source, which produces varying voltages within a certain limit so that currents equal to given references flowing from the DER to the grid (currents controlled). So, we introduce the symmetrical equivalent models in the form of varying voltage source for fault analysis and then, construct a convex optimization problem to solve the fault problem associated with the equivalent models and grid conditions. Thus, the proposed method enables to perform a proper fault analysis considering the characteristics of the DER, which are currents controlled, voltage limited, and unity power factor achievement. To verify the validity of the proposed method, we perform computer simulations with the proposed method and with MATLAB Simulink, and the results are compared.

  • As the power system is more complex and power demands increase, the fault currents have the tendency of increasing gradually. In the near future it will happen that the fault currents exceed circuit breaker rating for some substations. In this paper, the resistive SFCL (Superconducting Fault Current Limiter) is installed at Bus-Tie location to reduce the fault current in korea power systems and evaluated technical and economical Impacts.

  • Previous studies on high impedance faults assumed that the erratic behavior of fault current would be random. In this paper, we prove that the nature of the high impedance faults is indeed a deterministic chaos, not a random motion. Algorithms for estimating Lyapunov spectrum and the largest Lyapunov exponent are applied to various fault currents in order to evaluate the orbital instability peculiar to deterministic chaos dynamically, and fractal dimensions of fault currents, which represent geometrical self-similarity are calculated. In addition, qualitative analysis such as phase planes, Poincare maps obtained from fault currents indicate that the irregular behavior is described by strange attractor.
