  • This paper proposes the bus-tie application scheme of 154 kV SFCL (superconducting fault current limiter) in Korean power system. The reduced amount of fault current by SFCL is different by where the SFCL is installed. Therefore the inflow ratio of fault current (IRFC) is suggested to consider the effect of an SFCL's location. The proposed scheme was applied to the Korean Power System of 2010, and fault currents were calculated and analyzed with this coefficient. Simulations show that the location with high IRFC is adequate to install SFCL but more consideration of other things is required to determine the location and capacity of SFCL.

  • The most widely used primary protection for the internal fault detection of the power transformer is current ratio differential relaying (CRDR) with harmonic restraint. However, the second harmonic component could be decreased by magnetizing inrush when there have been changes to the material of the iron core or its design methodology. The higher the capacitance of the high voltage status and underground distribution, the more the differential current includes the second harmonic during the occurrence of an internal fault. Therefore, the conventional second harmonic restraint CRDR must be modified. This paper proposes a numerical algorithm for enhanced power transformer protection. This algorithm enables a clear distinction regarding internal faults as well as magnetizing inrush and steady state. It does this by analyzing the RMS fluctuation of terminal voltage, instantaneous value of the differential current, RMS changes, harmonic component analysis of differential current, and analysis of flux-differential slope characteristics. Based on the results of testing with WatATP99 simulation data, the proposed algorithm demonstrated more rapid and reliable performance.

  • Engineered structures built in seismic-prone areas are affected by aftershocks in addition to mainshocks. Although aftershocks generally are lower in magnitude than that of the mainshocks, some aftershocks may have higher intensities; thus, structures should be able to withstand the effect of strong aftershocks as well. This seismic scenario arises for far-field mainshock along with near-field aftershocks. In this study, four 2D reinforced concrete (RC) frames with different numbers of stories were designed in accordance with the current Iranian seismic design code. As a way to evaluate the seismic response of the case-study RC frames, the inter-story drift ratio (IDR) demand, the residual inter-story drift ratio (RIDR) demand, the Park-Ang damage index, and the period elongation ratio can be useful engineering demand parameters for evaluating their seismic performance under mainshock-aftershock sequences. The frame models were analyzed under a set of far-field mainshock, near-fault aftershocks seismic sequences using nonlinear dynamic time-history analysis to investigate the relationship among IDR, RIDR, Park-Ang damage index and period ratio experienced by the frames. The results indicate that the growth of IDR, RIDR, Park-Ang damage index, and period ratio in high-rise and short structures under near-fault aftershocks were significant. It is evident that engineers should consider the effects of near-fault aftershocks on damaged frames that experience far-field mainshocks as well.

  • In this paper, we investigated the quench characteristics of high-Tc superconducting(HTSC) elements in the integrated three-phase flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) according to fault types such as the single-line-to-ground fault, the double-line-to-ground fault, the line-to-line fault and the triple-line-to-ground fault. The integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL is an upgrade version of single-phase flux-lock type SFCL. The structure of the integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL consisted of a three-phase flux-lock reactor wound on an iron core with the ratio of the same turn between coil 1 and coil 2 in each phase. When the SFCL is under the normal condition, the flux generated in the iron core is zero because the flux generated between two coils of each single phase is canceled out. Therefore, the SFCL's impedance is zero, and the SFCL has negligible influence on the power system. However, if a fault occurs in any single one of three phases, the flux generated in the iron core is not zero any more. The flux makes HTSC elements of all phases to quench irrespective of the fault type, which reduces the current in fault phase as well as the current of sound phase. It was obtained that the fault current limiting characteristics of the suggested SFCL were dependent on the quench characteristics of HTSC elements in all three phases.

  • This paper presents the current limit strategy of voltage controller of delta-connected H-bridge static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) under an unbalanced voltage fault event. When phase to ground fault happens, the feasibility to heighten the magnitude of sagging phase voltage is considered by using symmetric transformation method in delta-structure STATCOM. And the efficiency to cover the maximum physical current limit of switching device is considered by using vector analysis method that calculate the zero sequence current for balancing the cluster energy in delta connected H-bridge STATCOM. The result is simple and obvious. Only positive sequence current has to be used to support the unbalanced voltage sag. Although the relationship between combination of the negative sequence voltage with current and zero sequence current is nonlinear, the more negative sequence current is supplying, the larger zero sequence current is required. From the full-model STATCOM system simulation, zero sequence current demand is identified according to a ratio of positive and negative sequence compensating current. When only positive sequence current support voltage sag, the least zero sequence current is needed.

  • The operational characteristics of the integrated three-phase flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) were analyzed. The suggested three-phase SFCL consisted of a three-phase flux-lock reactor and three high-Tc superconducting (HTSC) elements. The former has three windings wound on an iron core, each of which has the same turn's ratio between coil 1 and coil 2. The latter are connected in series with coil 2 of each phase. The integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL showed the operational characteristics that the fault phase could affect the sound phase, which resulted in quenching the HTSC element in the sound phase. Through the computer simulation applying numerical analysis for its three-phase equivalent circuit, the fault current limiting characteristics of the integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL according to the ground fault types were compared.

  • The conventional method to deal with current transformer (CT) Saturation is over dimensioning of the core so that CTs can carry up to 20 times the rated current without exceeding 10% ratio correction. However, this not only reduces the sensitivity of relays as some errors may still be present in the secondary current when a severe fault occurs, but also increases the CT size. This paper presents an algorithm for compensating the distorted secondary current of iron-cored CTs under CT saturation using the magnetization (flux-current : .lambda.-i) curve and its performance is examined for fault currents encountered on a typical 345[kV] Korean transmission system, under a variety of different system and fault conditions. In addition, the results of hardware implementation of the algorithm using a TMS320C10 digital signal processor are also presented. The proposed algorithm can improve the sensitivity of relays to low level internal faults, maximize the stability of relays for external faults, and reduce the required CT core cross-section significantly. • Superconducting fault current(SFCLs) are expected to improve not only reliability but also stability of real power systems. The analysis on the single line-to-ground fault current of the integrated three phase flux-lock type SFCL, which consists of three flux-lock reactor wound on an iron core in each single phase and three YBCO thin films, was investigated in current limiting operating characteristics. We compared additive polarity winding with the subtractive one in the flux lock reactor. Its turns ratio each phase between the primary and the secondary coils is 63:42. When a single line-to-ground fault occurred in any phase, the peak value of line current in the fault phase of the additive polarity winding increased up to 31.44[A] during first-half cycle. On the other hand, the peak value in the subtractive polarity winding increased up to 81.77[A] under the same conditions. This is because the current flow between the primary and the secondary windings becomes to be additive or subtractive in each winding direction. We confirmed that the current limiting behavior in the additive polarity winding was more effective for a single-line-to ground fault.
