The study of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is continuously being studied as a countermeasure for reducing fault-current in the power system. When the fault occurred in the power system, the fault-current was limited by the generated impedance of SFCLs. The operational characteristics of the flux-offset type SFCL according to turn ratios between the primary and the secondary winding of a reactor were compared in this study. We connected the secondary core to a superconductor and a SCR switch in series in the suggested structure. The fault current in the primary and the secondary winding of the reactor and the voltage of the superconductor on the secondary were measured and compared. The results showed that the fault current in the load line was the lowest and the voltage applied at both ends of the superconductor was also low when the secondary winding of the reactor had lower turn ratio than the primary. It was confirmed based on these results that the turn ratio of the secondary winding of the reactor must be designed to be lower than that of the primary winding to reduce the burden of the superconductor and to lower the fault current. Also, the suggested structure could increase the duration of the limited current by limiting the continuous current after the first half cycle from the fault with the fault current limiter.
The fault current limiting characteristics at the initial fault time for flux-lock type high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) were investigated. The amplitude of initial fault current of the flux-lock type SFCL was dependent on the inductance ratio of coil 1 and 2. After fault current limiting mode was analyzed, we compared the calculated value with the experimental one for the initial fault current. The effect of initial fault current due to the inductance ratio of coil 1 and 2 on fault current limiting characteristics was discussed.
This paper analyzed the fault current limiting characteristics of the previously proposed transformer superconducting fault current limiter (TSFCL) interruption system according to its transformer type. The TSFCL interruption system is an interruption technology that combines a TSFCL, which uses a transformer and a superconductor, and a mechanical DC circuit breaker. This technology first limits the fault current using the inductance of the transformer winding and the quench characteristics of the superconductor. The limited fault current is then interrupted by a mechanical DC circuit breaker. The magnitude of the limited fault current can be controlled by the quench resistance of the superconductor in the TSFCL and the turns ratio of the transformer. When the fault current is controlled using a superconductor, additional costs are incurred due to the cooling vessel and the length of the superconductor. When the fault current is controlled using step-up and step-down transformers, however, it is possible to control the fault current more economically than using the superconductor. The TSFCL interruption system was designed using PSCAD/EMTDC-based analysis software, and the fault current limiting characteristics according to the type of the transformer were analyzed. The turns ratios of the step-up and step-down transformers were set to 1:2 and 2:1. The results were compared with those of a transformer with a 1:1 turns ratio.

The fault current of the power transmission system is greater than that of the power distribution system. Therefore, the introduction of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is more needed to reduce the increased fault current. The trigger-type SFCL consists of the high-temperature superconducting element (HTSC), the current limiting reactor (CLR) and the circuit breaker (CB). The trigger-type SFCL can be used to supplement the disadvantages of the resistive-type SFCL. The operation characteristics of the current ratio differential relay which is usually applied to the protection device of the power transmission system are expected to be affected under fault conditions and the applicability of the trigger-type SFCL. In this paper, we analyzed the operating characteristics, by the fault conditions, between the current ratio differential relay for line protection and the trigger-type SFCL in the power transmission system through the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation.

In this paper, the fault current limiting characteristics of a flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with peak current limiting function were analyzed through its short-circuit tests. The setting condition for the peak current limiting operation was derived from its electrical equivalent circuit, which was dependent on the inductance ratio between the third coil and the first coil. Through the analysis on the short-circuit tests for the flux-lock type SFCLs with the different inductance ratio between the third coil and the first coil, the setting value for the peak current limiting operation of the flux-lock type SFCL with peak current limiting function could be confirmed to be adjusted with the variation of the inductance ratio between the third coil and the first coil.
In AC feeding system, the fault location is calculated by using ratio of current absorbed in the neutral point of AT(Automatic Transformer) or by measuring reactance. In this way, however, an estimation error can be happened due to the many reasons. In addition, for measuring currents in the neutral point of AT, other measuring devices and communication equipments are additionally required. In order to solve the disadvantages, this paper suggests a novel technique using the distribution ratio of catenary current. The proposed technique uses existing protective relays and measures catenary current. With the measured data, we can calculate the distribution ratio of catenary current and determine fault location. Through the simulated results, we derived the correlation between current ratio and fault location. Using this technique, additional equipments and expenses can be reduced. Besides, fault location can be determined more correctly.
This paper suggests an application method for a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using an evaluation index to estimate the risk regarding the short-circuit capacity of the circuit breaker (CB). Recently, power distribution systems have become more complex to ensure that supply continuously keeps pace with the growth of demand. However, the mesh or loop network power systems suffer from a problem in which the fault current exceeds the short-circuit capacity of the CBs when a fault occurs. Most case studies on the application of the SFCL have focused on its development and performance in limiting fault current. In this study, an analysis of the application method of an SFCL considering the risk of the CB's short-circuit capacitor was carried out in situations when a fault occurs in a loop network power system, where each line connected with the fault point carries a different current that is above or below the short-circuit capacitor of the CB. A loop network power system using PSCAD/EMTDC was modeled to investigate the risk ratio of the CB and the effect of the SFCL on the reduction of fault current through various case studies. Through the risk evaluations of the simulation results, the estimation of the risk ratio is adequate to apply the SFCL and demonstrate the fault current limiting effect.
According to the increase of electric consumption nowadays, power system becomes complicated. Due to this, the size of single line-to-ground fault from power system also increases to have many problems. In order to resolve these problems effectively, an Superconducting Fault Current Limiter(SFCL) was proposed and continuous study has been done. In this paper, an SFCL was combined to the neutral line of a transformer. An superconductivity has the characteristics of zero resistance below critical temperature. because of this, SFCL has nearly zero resistance. so we connecting SFCL to neutral line will not only have any loss in the normal operation but also have the less burden of electric power because of only limiting the initial fault current. We analyzed the characteristics of current, voltage according to the changes of turn ratio of 3 phase system in case of combinations of an SFCL to the neutral line. It was confirmed that the limiting rate of initial fault current by the increase of turn ratio was reduced.

The flux-coupling type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) is composed of a series transformer and superconducting unit of the YBCO coated conductor. The primary and secondary coils in the transformer were wound in series each other through an iron core and the YBCO coated conductor was connected with secondary coil in parallel. In a normal condition, the flux generated from a primary coil is cancelled out by its structure and the zero resistance of the YBCO thin films. When a fault occurs, the resistance of the YBCO coated conductor was generated and the fault current was limited by the SFCL. In this paper, we investigated the fault current limiting characteristics according to turn ratio in the flux-coupling type SFCL. The experiment results that the fault current limiting characteristics was improved according to turn ratio.

In this paper, we investigated the fault current limiting and the load voltage sag suppressing characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL, designed with the additive polarity winding, according to the variations of turn number's ratio and the comparative analysis between the resistive type and the flux-lock type SFCLs were performed as well. From the analysis for the short-circuit tests, the flux-lock type SFCL designed with the larger turn number's ratio was shown to perform more effective fault current limiting and load voltage sag suppressing operations compared to the flux-lock type SFCL designed with the lower turn number's ratio through the fast quench occurrence of the high-$T_C$ superconducting (HTSC) element comprising the flux-lock type SFCL. In addition, the recovery time of the flux-lock type SFCL after the fault removed could be confirmed to be shorter in case of the flux-lock type SFCL designed with the lower turn number ratio.
