Objective: This study aims to evaluate visual discomfort and visual fatigue caused by watching HMD and smartphones by conducting both subjective and objective measure. Background: With the rapid development of mobile Head-Mounted Display (HMD), the problem of visual discomfort and visual fatigue caused by watching Virtual Reality (VR) contents became a crucial concern for consumers and manufacturers, especially given that the casing of mobile HMD keeps the phone at a specified distance from the lenses that is close to the eyes. Method: Two smartphones were chosen for a preliminary study: LG G5 and Galaxy S7. As for a main study, iPhone 6S and Galaxy S7 were used. After being exposed to the selected clips, participants were asked to answer Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ) and went through optometric tests that measure tear break-up time, spherical equivalent, and contrast sensitivity. Results: The subjective assessments indicate that HMD causes more visual discomfort compared to watching a smartphone. Furthermore, the experimental result confirms that watching a HMD causes more eye dryness compared to smartphones. Conclusion: The result of the study compared visual discomfort and visual fatigue of two different displays, HMD and smartphone, and confirmed that watching HMD causes more visual discomfort and visual fatigue. Application: Ultimately, this study could help manufacturers understand the strengths and weaknesses of different display forms, providing guidance for an effective application of HMD.

The fatigue strength and fracture topography in the friction welded interface of high speed steel (HSS-Co) to SM55C carbon steel have been investigated through the fatigue test, SEM fractograph and EDS (energy dispersive spectrometer) analysis. Three kinds of specimens used in this research are the friction welded joints, HSS-Co and SM55C carbon steel with circumferential notch, saw notch and smooth, respectively. The notch sensitivity factor, .eta. of the friction welded joints is lower than that of the base materials, and that represents a superiority of the joint performance of FRW. Fracture topography of the FRW specimens with a notch showed a cleavage or brittle appearance, while that of the FRW smooth specimen appeared to be ductile. Furthermore, although fatigue crack likely initiated near the weld interface of the FRW smooth specimen, crack propagation continued into the HAZ of SM55C steel. Finally, fatigue fractures of the base materials were associated primarily with the inclusions located at the outer periphery of the specimen.

It is thought that impact damages and hygrothermals can affect to CFRP (Carbon-fiber reinforced plastic) composite laminated due to the sensitivity on the composite laminated Therefore, this paper focuses on the fracture mechanisms experimentally based on a scanning acoustic microscope (SAM) when subjected to impact damages, i.e., foreign object damages(FOD), and also the influence of impact damages and hygrothermals on residual fatigue bending strength of CFRP laminates. Composite laminates used in the experiment are CF/EPOXY orthotropy laminated plates, which constist of two-interfaces [04/904]s. A steel ball launched by an air gun collides against CFRP laminates to generate impact damages. Bending fatigue tests are periodically interrupted for a nondestructive evaluation (NDE) measurement of the progrossive damages to built the fracture mechanism by impact damages, and three-point fatigue bending tests are carried out to investigate the influence of hygrothermals on the effect on the residual bending fatigue strength of CFRP laminates.

This paper studies the strength, fatigue sensitivity, safety factor and lifetimes by means of structural and fatigue analyses of different models of rear doors upon the opening of doors and windows leading to severe fatigue fractures of the window motor components of rear doors. The simulation models were a standard model and other models. The other models, which are denoted here as models I and II, were modified versions of the standard model, with a rib of 3mm and a thickness of 2mm as compared to the standard model. The door was modelled with CATIA V5 and analyzed with the ANSYS program. The material of the rear door was cold rolled steel (DDQ). From the study results, the standard model and model I were confirmed to be less safe upon the opening of the door as compared to the opening of a window in terms of fatigue, but model II was found to be safe for both door and window openings.
The challenges involved with fatigue damage assessment of steel catenary riser (SCR) in the touchdown zone (TDZ) are primarily due to the non-linear behaviour of the SCR-seabed interaction, considerable uncertainty in SCR-seabed interaction modelling and geotechnical parameters. The issue of fatigue damage induced by the cyclic movements of the SCR with the seabed has acquired prominence with the touch down point (TDP) interaction in the TDZ. Therefore, the SCR-seabed response is critical for reliable estimation of fatigue life in the TDZ. Various design approaches pertaining to the lateral pipe-soil resistance model are discussed. These techniques have been applied in the finite element model that can be used to analyse the lateral SCR-seabed interaction under hydrodynamic loading. This study investigates the sensitivity of fatigue performance to geotechnical parameters through a parametric study. In this study, global analyses are performed to assess the influence of vertical linear seabed springs, the lateral seabed model and the non-linear seabed model, including trench evolution into seabed, seabed normalised stiffness, re-penetration offset parameter and soil suction resistance ratio, on the fatigue life of SCRs in the TDZ.

Fatigue design and evaluation of welded joints are typically carried out by weld classification approach in which a family (theoretically infinite) of parallel nominal stress based S-N curves are used according to joint types and loading modes as well as extrapolation-based hot spot stress. Traditional finite element methods are not capable of consistently capturing the stress concentration effects on fatigue behavior due to their mesh-sensitivity in stress determination at welds resulted from notch stress singularity. The extrapolated hot spot stresses tend vary, depending on the element sizes, types, joint types, and loading mode. however, the equilibrium-equivalent structural stress method(E2S2) has been recently developed through several joint industry projects as a robust method to analyze welded components using finite element analysis. This method has been proven effective in correlating a large amount of published fatigue test results in the literature such as master S-N curve and has used for evaluating the fatigue life of welding components. In this study, fatigue analysis of the welding bogie frame is examined using E2S2 method with master S-N curve.

In this study, corrosion fatigue test of SAPH45 steel was performed by the use of plane bending fatigue tester in marine environment and investigated fracture surface growth behavior of base metal and heat affected zone corrosion fatigue. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) Fracture surface growth of heat affected zone (HAZ) is delayed more than that of base matel (BM), and they tend to faster in seawater than in air. 2) Corrosion sensitivity to corrosion fatigue life of HAZ is more susceptible than that of BM. 3)In the case of the corner crack by corrosion fatigue, the correlation between the propagation rate of fracture surface area(dA/dN) and stress intensity factor range(ΔK) for SAPH45 are applied to Paris rule as follows: dA/dN=C(ΔK) super(m) where m is the slope of the correlation, and is about 6.60-6.95 in air and about 6.33-6.41 in seawater respectively.
This study investigates the effects of the material properties and the fatigue behaviors in the SM490A material butt weld specimens due to the heat-treatment and the grinding. In the fatigue behavior, the heat-treatment affects the fatigue life. The S-N curves of both matrix specimen and butt weld specimen are reversed at some cycle by the existence or nonexistence of heat-treatment. The grinding on the bead makes the fatigue limit decrease in the all specimens. But the reinforcement removed, the fatigue limit increases at the high cycle. Also, this study investigates the fatigue life estimation by examining butt weld bead profiles. The butt weld beads, which are welded by semi-robot method, have non-uniform bead profiles described by $\theta,\;\rho$ and h. The stress concentration factors $K_t$, are changed by each different $\theta,\;\rho$ and h from 1.395 to 2.863. Hence, the sensitivity of $K_t$ is changed by each $\theta,\;\rho$ and h. As $\theta$ becomes lower and $\rho$ and h become higher, $K_t$ increases. The fatigue life can he estimated very closely for the AAY specimens without residual stress using only butt weld bead profiles. But, fur the AAN specimens with residual stress, the fatigue life must be estimated by considering both the weld bead profiles and the residual stress data.

Tensile and LCF(low cycle fatigue) tests were carried out in air at wide temperature range 20$^{\circ}C$-750$^{\circ}C$ and strain rates of 1${\times}$10$\^$-4//s-1${\times}$10$\^$-2/ to ascertain the influence of strain rate on tensile and LCF properties of prior cold worked 316L stainless steel, especially focused on the DSA(dynamic strain aging) regime. Dynamic strain aging induced the change of tensile properties such as strength and ductility in the temperature region 250$^{\circ}C$-600$^{\circ}C$ and this temperature region well coincided with the negative strain rate sensitivity regime. Cyclic stress response at all test conditions was characterized by the initial hardening during a few cycles, followed by gradual softening until final failure. Temperature and strain rate dependence on cyclic softening behavior appears to result from the change of the cyclic plastic deformation mechanism and DSA effect. The DSA regimes between tensile and LCF loading conditions in terms of the negative strain rate sensitivity were well consistent with each other. The drastic reduction in fatigue resistance at elevated temperature was observed, and it was attributed to the effects of oxidation, creep and dynamic strain aging or interactions among them. Especially, in the DSA regime, dynamic strain aging accelerated the reduction of fatigue resistance by enhancing crack initiation and propagation.

In order to understand the probabilistic nature of fatigue crack propagation, not only the calculation of failure probability and parameter sensitivity, but also the clarification of probabilistic nature of various parameters should be executed. Therefore a method to evalute synthetically the effect of each parameter on the distribution of fatigue crack propagation life is required. In this study, the effects of the initial crack size and other paramaters on the distribution of fatigue crack propagation life are discussed according to the appropriate normalization of the life distribution, the validity of this method is also shown. Such an investigation as the present work may be useful to understand the nature of the life distribution and to utilize the probailistic fracture mechanics.
