  • The lightness of components that was required in automobile and machinery industry requires high strength of components. In particular, manufacturing process and new materials development for solving the fatigue facture problem attendant upon high strength of suspension of automobile are actively advanced. In this paper, the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9)by shot-peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in high temperature($100^{\circ}C,\;150^{\circ}C,\;180^{\circ}C$)was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. So, we can obtaint the followings. (1) Compressive residual stress is decreased with increasing the test temperature. (2) The effect of compressive residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior in high temperature is increased below ${\Delta}K=17{\sim}19MPa{\sqrt{m}}$. (3) It was investigated by SEM that the constraint of compress residual stress for plastic zone of fatigue crack tip was decreased in high temperature as compared with room temperature.

  • As concrete structures are getting larger, higher, longer and more specialized, it is more required to develop steel fiber concrete and apply to the real world. In this research, it is aimed to have fatigue strength examined, varying the steel fiber content of 0%, 0.75%, 1.00%, 1.25% by experimental study of fatigue behavior of the steel fiber reinforced concrete continuous beams under cyclic loading. The ultimate load and initial load of flexural cracking were measured by static test. In addition, the load versus strain relation, load versus deflection relation, crack pattern and fracture mode by increasing weight were observed. On the other hand, the crack propagation and the modes of fracture according to cycle number and the relation of cyclic loading to deflection relation and strain relation were investigated by fatigue test. As the result of fatigue test, continuous beam without steel fiber was failed at 60 ~ 70% of The static ultimate strength and it could be concluded that fatigue strength to two million cyclic loading was arround 67.2% by S-N curve. On the other hand, that with steel fiber was failed at 65 ~ 85% of the static ultimate strength and it could be concluded fatigue strength to two million cyclic loading around 71.7%.

  • Acoustic emission behavior during fatigue crack growth test was investigated under various loading condition. To describe the acoustic emission activity, counts rate (d/dn) was related with SIFR (stress intensity factor range, K). Results indicated that SIFR could be divided into two parts according to its relationship with counts rate. For $K<25_{MPa\sqrt{m}}$, counts rate was increased as the SIFR increased. However, for values greater than $25_{MPa\sqrt{m}}$ , decreasing behavior was shown. This behavior of counts rate corresponding SIFR was keeping the same trend regardless of load range or crack length. Acoustic emission response to the single overload was sudden drop and slow recovery in counts rate like crack growth retardation. Under variable loading condition, counts rate of each loading block was same as that of constant amplitude loading. Overall experimental data was somewhat scattered since sensitive characteristics of acoustic emission method. However, these empirical relations indicated that counts rate was uniquely correlate with single parameter, SIFR.

  • To estimate the fatigue crack propagation behavior of compact tension shear (CTS) specimen under mixed-mode loads, crack path prediction theories and Tanaka's equation were applied. The stress intensity factor at a newly created crack tip was calculated using a finite element method via ANSYS, and the crack path and crack increment were then obtained from the crack path prediction theories, Tanaka's equation, and the Paris' equation, which were preprogrammed in Microsoft Excel. A new method called the finite element crack tip updating method (FECTUM) was developed. In this method, the finite element method and Microsoft Excel are used to calculate the stress intensity factors and the crack path, respectively, at the crack tip per each crack increment. The developed FECTUM was applied to simulate the fatigue crack propagation of a single-edge notched bending (SENB) specimen under eccentric three-point bending loads. The results showed that the number of cycles to failure of the specimen obtained experimentally and numerically were in good agreement within an error range of less than 3%.

  • In order to investigate characteristics of surface fatigue crack propagation from a pit shaped surface defect which frequently exists near weld joints, SS400 steel with thickness of 12mm, which generally used for structure members, was submerged-arc welded with butt type and machined for both surface. The weld joints were devided into 5 regions, weld metal, boundary between heat affected zone (HAZ), HAZ, boundary between HAZ and base metal, and base metal. Specimens from each region were machined for a pit shaped initial surface defect with aspect ratio of 2. characteristics of surface fatigue crack por pagation from the defect under the same loading condition were compared and discussed.

  • The concrete bridge decks are in need of replacement and rehabilitation due to decreasing load carrying capacity. In this study, to extend life cycle of the concrete bridge decks which are reinforced with the glass fiber sheets, the concrete bridge decks are examined on the strengthen effect and the fatigue behavior. The behavior of strengthened slabs is represented by load-displacement relationship, variation of compliance and total released energy. Owing to result of that, the strengthened slabs is modified the elasticity, the compliance and represents to control the crack elongation, to elevate the total released energy, to modify the fatigue life. When the concrete bridge deck is strengthened, the crack propagation nay be controled efficiently.

  • Fatigue tests were conducted on SM45C steel using hour-glass shaped smooth tubular specimen under biaxial loading in order to investigate the crack formation and growth at room temperature. Three types of loading systems, were employed fully-reserved cyclic torsion without a superimposed static tension or compression fully-reserved cyclic torsion with a superimposed static tension and fully-reserved cyclic torsion with a superimposed static compression. The test results showed that a superimposed static tensile mean stress reduced fatigue life however a superimposed static compressive mean stress increased fatigue life. Experimental results indicated that cracks were initiated on planes of maximum shear strain whether or not the mean stresses were superimposed. A biaxial mean stress had an effect on the direction that the cracks nucleated and propagated at stage 1 (mode II).

  • In this paper, a four-layer road structure consisting of an edge transverse crack is simulated using three-dimensional finite element method in order to capture the influence of a single-axle wheel load on the crack propagation through the asphalt concrete layer. Different positions of the vehicular load relative to the cracked area are considered in the analyses. Linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) is used for investigating the effect of the traffic load on the behavior of a crack propagating within the asphalt concrete. The results obtained show that the crack front experiences all three modes of deformation i.e., mode I, mode II and mode III, and the corresponding stress intensity factors are highly affected by the crack geometry and the vehicle position. The results also show that for many loading situations, the contribution of shear deformation (due to mode II and mode III loading) is considerable.

  • The corrosion fatigue fracture behaviour of dual phase steel was investigated in 3% NaCl solution at 302MPa and 137MPa. Fatigue test was conducted by cantilever type of self-made rotary bending fatigue testing machine. The fatigue strength increased with increasing the hardness of 2nd phase. Corrosion pit originated at the boundary of the 2nd phase. The size and number of corrosion pits were influenced by the 2nd phase hardness, and pits remained constant in size just after they were transited into cracks. The life of crack initiation was effected by stress level. The shape of relation of .DELTA. K and da/dN has smaller scattering in it in 3% NaCl solution than that in air. The higher the 2nd phase hardness is, the greater the corrosion fatigue life becomes. Corrosion fatigue fracture behaviour was primarily effected by mechanical factor in case of high stress(302MPa), but by electro-chemical reaction in a lower stress(137MPa). As stress level got lower and hardness of the 2nd phase got higher, the roughness of fracture surface increased.
