The fatigue crack propagation behavior or non-heat-treatment and thermally aged type 304 stainless steel was investigated on the basis of linear elastic fracture mechanics. This Study was concentrated on the relations between the crack propagation rate and the stress intensity factor range. The following results are obtained : The precision measurement and observation of fatigue crack propagation behavior is studied with moire grating. The effect of thermally aged type 304 stainless steel is investigated under small load. In the equation da/dN=c(.DELTA. k)/SUP m/, factor m of thermally aged steel is a little higher than non-heat-treatmented steel and its limit is m=1.35-4.2.

In terms of behavior of fatigue cracks propagated after build-up around the artificial drilled miro-hole, this study has been made of the build-up process of slips and micro cracks, behavior of micro-crack propagation and the definition of fatigue limit under the rotating bending stress with low carbon steel. The results of this study are as follows: (1) The fatigue limit is the repropagating critical stress for the nonpropagating cracks which have grown to some limit around the micro-hole in regard of the magnitude of micro-hole. (2) Behavior of the slips and micro-cracks initiation are occurring simultaneously in front and in rear of micro-hole tips in the view of the rotational direction, regardless of the magnitude of micro-hole. (3) Behavior of fatigue crack propagation is different from magnitude of micro-hole, its behavior is propagation of single crack about respectively large hole, but about respectively small hole, fatigue crack propagated joining phenomena of micro-cracks. (4) The behavior of fatigue fracture is affected by the factor of its defects in the view of magnitude of micro-hole when the diameter of the micro-holes are smaller than 50.mu.m, and this is also affected with the size effect of micro-hole diameter.
An important class of short-fiber reinforced composites is the sheet molding compound, which is recently developed and currently used in many engineering applications. Fatigue failure of the composites is a subject of major concern in design and cyclic crack propagation is of particular significance in the fatigue life prediction of short fiber composites. However, research on the fatigue behavior of polymer injection weld, especially short glass fiber-filled polymer injection weld, has not been carried out. In this study the analyses of the fatigue crack growth behaviors at weld line and in the bulk are performed based on low cycle fatigue test.
This paper describes a study of fillet welded joint stressed perpendicular to the weld line. The finite element method was used to determine the stress intensity factor for cruciform joint at weld toe and root cracks according to variation of H/Tp, weld angle and main plate thickness. But, in this study, weld angle was fixed at 45.deg., since the variation of weld angle affect the stress intensity factor little, also main plate thickness was fixed. Pulsating tension fatigue test was done at the second phase of experiment. The work using the concepts of the fracture mechanics on the stable crack growth, was in the correlation of the experimental fatigue stress-life behavior because the fatigue behaviors of various joint geometries are related to the stress intensity factors calculated by F.E.M. analysis. Main results obtained are summarized as follows. 1) According to the propagation of toe crack, the variation of the stress intensity factor at root crack is obvious as H/Tp is smaller. 2) According to the propagation of root cracks, the change of the stress intensity factor of the toe is very large with propagation of root crack. 3) The calculation formula of the stress intensity factor of crack propagation at the root crack was obtained. 4) The calculation formula of the stress intensity factor at the toe cracks was obtained in similar manner. 5) From the results of experiment, the velocity of fatigue crack propagation at the weld toe and root was estimated.
It is well known that mechanisms of fracture and fatigue crack propagation depend upon various characteristics such as environmental condition. crack geometry. heat treatment and mechanical properties. It seems to be important for the detailed evaluation of structural integrity to investigate the effects of the above factors on the behavior of structural components which contain flaws. In this paper. it is studied that the fatigue crack propagation of partly heat treated medium carbon steel (SM45C) by high frequency heat treatment.

Characteristics of fatigue crack propagation in martensite-ferrite duel phase steels have been investigated. In low .DELTA.K region, fatigue crack propagation resistance increases with increasing volume fraction of martensite, but the difference of crack propagation resistance resulted from the volume fraction decreases with increasing .DELTA.K. Also, threshold stress intensity factor range .DELTA.K$_{th}$ increases with increasing volume fraction of martensite, But fatigue crack propagation rates of dual-phase steels in terms of .DELTA.K$_{eff}$ are independent to volume fraction of martensite. These phenomena can be explained by the roughness induced crack closure due to crack deflection.n.n.
This thesis studied to evaluate the fatigue behavior and propagation of rail steel under welding line. Test of crack growth was performed by all member of rail under constant amplitude loading at the structures laboratory in Hongik University. The effect of the following parameters with initiated crack length on the bottom edge of rail were studied. Here, fracture mechanics mode is opening mode. and Testing Material is KS50N Rail. From analysis and experimented result on the three Point bending in the lab, This paper presented a effect of crack growth , shape and remaining service life. Further more, according to the variable crack length, variable section and the ratio of section the fatigue behavior and propagation were studied.

Fatigue crack propagation behavior and the fatigue life in-high performance steel were investigated by means of fatigue crack propagation tests under constant loading conditions of 'R=0.1 and f=0.1 Hz', 'R=0.3 and f=0.3 Hz', and 'R=0.5 and f=0.5 Hz' for the load ratio and frequency, respectively. A modified Forman model was developed to describe the fatigue crack propagation behavior for the conditions. The modified Forman model is applicable to all fatigue crack propagation regions I, II, and III by implementing the threshold stress intensity factor range and the effective stress intensity factor range caused by crack closure. The results show that predicted fatigue lives of Forman and modified Forman models were 8,814 and 12,292 cycles, respectively when the crack propagated approximately 5.0 mm and the load ratio and frequency were both 0.1. Comparison of the test results indicates that the modified Forman model showed much more effective fatigue crack propagation behavior in high-performance steel.

This study investigates the behavior of fatigue crack propagating between holes of holes filled with another materials. When holes of the holes filled with another materials are located symmetrically near a center crack, it is noted that the crack propagation rate is influenced by both the bonding force of the brazing part and the elastic modulus of another material. It is experimentally and analytically confirmed that the center crack stops when its tip reaches near the center line of the holes and a small crack is initiated from the boundaries of holes of the holes filled with another materials and it propagates to final fracture.

The SMC composite, now being considered in certain structural applications, is anticipated to experience repeated loading during service. Thus, understanding of the fatigue behavior is essential in proper use of the composite material. In this paper, using the SMC composite composed of E-glass chopped strand and unsaturated polyester resin three point bending fatigue tests are carried out to investigate the fatigue crack propagating behavior under various cyclic stresses and fatigue damage of various microcrack forms. The following results are obtained from this study; 1) Most of the total fatigue life of the SMC composite is consumed at the initial extension or the growth of the macroscopic crack. 2) A Paris' type power-law relationship between the crack propagation rate and stress intensity factor range is obtained, and the value of material constant m is much higher (m=9~11)than that of other metals. 3) In case of high cyclic stress the fatigue damage show high microcrack density and short crack length, but in case of low cyclic stress does it vice versa. 4) Fatigue damage is characterized by microcrack density, crack length and distribution of crack orientation.
