For steel-concrete girders made composite using shear studs, initial damage on studs induced by weld defect, unexpected overloading, fatigue and others might degrade the service performance and even threaten the structural safety. This paper conducted a numerical study to investigate the static behavior of damaged stud shear connectors that were embedded in ultra high performance concrete (UHPC). Parameters included damage degree and damage location. The material nonlinear behavior was characterized by multi-linear stress-strain relationship and damage plasticity model. The results indicated that the shear strength was not sensitive to the damage degree when the damage occurred at 2/3d (d is the stud diameter) from the stud root. An increased stud area would be engaged in resisting shear force as the distance of damage location from stud root increased and the failure section becomes inclined, resulting in a less reduction in the shear strength and shear stiffness. The reduction factor was proposed to consider the degradation of the shear strength of the damaged stud. The reduction factor can be calculated using two approaches: a linear relationship and a square relationship with the damage degree corresponding to the shear strength dominated by the section area and the nominal diameter of the damaged stud. It was found that the proposed method is preferred to predict the shear strength of a stud with initial damage.
This paper presents the strength safety of a LPG cylinder, which is fabricated by a steel sheet forming and a welding technology. The strength safety of a cylinder is guaranteed by analyzing a stress distribution of a LPG cylinder structure using a finite element method. The FEM computed results indicate that the hydraulic test gas pressure of $31kg/cm^2$ generates a concentrated local stress near the upper round end plate, which exceeds the yield strength of a LPG cylinder. Thus, the current hydraulic test pressure may be rechecked and revised because this pressure increases the fatigue failure and decreases the lift of the pressure vessel. The normal operation and sealing gas pressures such as $9kg/cm^2\;and\;18.6kg/cm^2$ are relatively safe for a steel LPG cylinder.
Structural analysis of a brake shoe for commercial vehicle was performed using finite element method. Since the strength of a brake shoe is affected by the magnitude and distribution shape of the contact pressure with the drum, the contact pressure between the shoe friction material and drum was calculated using a 2-Dimensional non-linear contact analysis in a state. And the brake was actuated by input air pressure and the drum of it was calculated both stationary and dynamic based on forced torque applied to the drum during the static state analysis. The results of the above analysis were then used as the load boundary conditions for a 3-Dimensional shoe model analysis to determine the maximum strain on the shoes. In the analysis model, the values of tensile test were used for the material properties of the brake shoes and drum, while the values of compression test were used for the friction material. We assumed it as linear variation, even though the properties of friction material were actually non-linear. The experiments were carried out under the same analysis conditions used for fatigue test and under the same brake system which equipped with a brake drum based on the actual axle state in a vehicle. The strains were measured at the same locations where the analysis was performed on the shoes. The obtained results of the experiment matched well with those from the analysis. Consequently, the model used in this study was able to determine the stress at the maximum air pressure at the braking system, thereby a modified shoe model in facilitating was satisfied with the required endurance strength in the vehicle.
Hastelloy X in this study was applied in jet engine F-15 air fighter as shroud to isolate the engine from outer skin. After 15 years operation at elevated temperature the mechanical properties decreased gradually due to the precipitation of continues second phases in the grain boundaries and precipitated inside the grain. The crack happened at the edge of the shroud due to the thermal and mechanical stress from jet engine. Selective TEM analysis found that the grain boundaries consist of $M_{23}C_6$ carbide, $M_6$ Ccarbide and small percentage of sigma(${\sigma}$) phase. Furthermore, it was confirmed the nano size of ${\sigma}$ and miu (${\mu}$) phase inside the grain. In this study, it was investigated the microstructure of the degraded shroud component and HAZ of repair welded shroud. In the HAZ, it was observed the dissolution of the $M_{23}C_6$ carbides and smaller precipitates, the migration of the undissolved larger $M_{23}C_6$ carbide and $M_6$ Ccarbide. It is also observed the liquation due to the simply melt of the segregated precipitates in the grain boundaries. Interestingly, the segregated second phases which simply melt in the grain boundaries more easily happened at higher heat input welding condition. High temperature tensile test was done at $300^{\circ}C$, $700^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$. It was obtained that the toughness of welded sample is lower compare to the non-welded sample. The solution heat treatment at $1170^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes was suggested to obtain a better mechanical properties of the shroud. The high cycle fatigue number of the repair welded shroud shows a much lower compare to the shroud. In addition, the high cycle fatigue number at room temperature after solution heat treatment was almost double compare to the before solution heat treatment under 420-500MPa stress amplitude. However, the high cycle fatigue number of repaired welded sample was shown a much lower compare to the non- welded shroud and solution treated shroud. One of the main reasons to decrease the tensile strength and the high cycle fatigue properties of the repair welded shroud is the formation of the liquid phase in HAZ.

Nowadays, non-pollution energy sources have been strongly needed because of the exhaustion of fossil fuels and serious environmental problems. Because wind energy can be enormously obtained from natural atmosphere, this type of energy has lots of advantages in a economic and pollution point of view. This study has established the aerodynamic and structural design procedure of the rotor blade with an appropriate aerodynamic performance and structural strength for the 500㎾ medium class wind turbine system. The aerodynamic configuration of the rotor blade was determined by considering the wind condition in the typical local operation region, and based on this configuration aerodynamic performance analysis was performed. The rotor blade has the shell-spar structure based on glass/epoxy composite material and is composed of shank including metal joint parts and blade. Structural design was done by the developed design program in this study and structural analysis, for instance stress analysis, mode analysis and fatigue life estimation, was performed by the finite element method. As a result, a medium scale wind turbine rotor blade with starting characteristics of 4m/s wind speed, rated power of 500㎾ at 12m/s wind speed and over 20 years fatigue life has been designed.

In this study, an optimal stiffness model of the C-frame, which was supporting the mold and tool load, was proposed to obtain quality self-piercing riveting (SPR) joining. First, the load path acting on the C-frame structure was identified using topology optimization. Then, a final suggested model was proposed based on the load path results. Stiffness and strength analyses were performed for a rivet pressing force of 7.3 [t] to compare the design performance of the final proposed model with that of the initial model. Moreover, to examine the reliability of continuous and repeated processes, vibration analysis was performed and the dynamic stiffness of the final proposed model was reviewed. Additionally, fatigue analysis was performed to ascertain the fatigue characteristics due to simple repetitive loading. Finally, stiffness test was performed for the final proposed model to verify the analysis results. The obtained results differed from the analysis result by 2.9%. Consequently, the performance of the final proposed model was superior to that of the initial model with respect to not only the SPR fastening quality but also the reliability of continuous and repetitive processes.

This paper introduces the calibration results of the fatigue crack growth models for damage tolerance analysis of the aircraft structures. Generalized Willenborg model and Wheeler model are calibrated with experimental data tested under the load spectrum of a trainer. The retardation factors such as, shut-off ratio in Generalized Willenborg model and shaping exponent in Wheeler model, are evaluated for aluminum alloys AL2024-T3511, AL7050-T7451 and AL7075-T73511. It is shown that the retardation effect of the crack growth rate depends on the yield strength of material and the maximum stress in the load spectrum. Generalized Willenborg model and Wheeler model give satisfactory prediction of crack growth life but the calibration of the experimental parameters with test is required.

This study presents the development of a new aluminum seat frame for the commercial bus. Back moment and seat belt anchorage analysis of the conventional steel seat frame was conducted as a base model. Effective aluminum section dimensions for aluminum pipe were calculated from equivalent stiffness and equivalent weight study. Back moment and seat belt anchorage strength with the developed aluminum seat frame were compared to those of the base model. Additionally, to pass the fatigue test, shape modification of side frame assembly was conducted. From this study we could reduce the weight of seat frame more than 5 kg. And the current analysis model and procedure can provide useful informations in designing a new commercial car seat and can reduce the overall design cost and time.

There has been recent demand for extending the life of age-degraded structures and equipment by such techniques as diagnosis, maintenance, safety assessment, and estimating residual life on iron-making plants and hydraulic, thermal, and nuclear power plants. These techniques take into account comprehensive scenarios that may cause malfunction and structural damage and allow an assessment of risk based on the likely scenarios. In particular the safety assessment and residual life estimation of age-degraded ships and equipment facilities require consideration of various factors such as mechanical and thermal stresses, corrosion, hardness, load variation due to changes of operating condition, crack generation and strength reduction of material by fatigue. In this study, a detail thermal stress analysis, one of useful techniques of safety assessment and maintenance, is performed on a blast furnace by using general FEM code (MSC/NASTRAN).
It is known that bogie frame must have sufficient stiffness for car body and passenger weight and transfer traction and braking force, and as of today most studies and verifications are restricted to static and fatigue analysis for force acted on bogie frame. Bogie frame is mounted with equipments to control the signal, traction and so on, this equipment's behavior is subjected to vibration mode occurs on running condition. If the resonance occurs on this equipment, the possibility of crack occurrence on bracket connected with equipment and bogie frame will be increased. In this paper, the method of vibration strength verification for bracket attached on bogie frame will be introduced by using frequency response method.
