  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the important loads related with crack-growth in aircraft. Al Alloys mainly used in aircraft are Al2024 and Al7075 in Duralumin. In random fatigue loading, it has been understood crack-growth characteristic using fractured surface photograph by SEM. In order to obtained CTOD, we measured a crack size in wing frame part. As a result of fatigue experiment that accumulating plenty of fatigue loadings, we find more cracks than that produces in the same fatigue loading. The important loads relating to crack-growth was found in the largest strain cycle. Applying strain block in fatigue experiment, it is actually loading in connection of aircraft. In conclusion, These results can be used for preventing an accident owing fatigue-fracture in aircraft.

  • This study verified the relationship between fracture mechanics parameters(${\Delta}K,\;K_{max}$) and X-ray parameters ($(\sigma}_r,;B$) for G365 steel at elevated temperature up to $300{\circ}C$. The fatigue crack propagation test were carried out and X-ray diffraction technique according to crack length direction was applied to fatigue fractured surface. The residual stress on the fracture surface was found to increase in low ${\Delta}K$ region, reach to a maximum value at a certain value of $K_{max}$ or ${\Delta}K$ and then decrease. Residual stress was independent on stress ratio by arrangement of ${\Delta}K$ and half value breadth was independent by the arrangement of $K_{max}$. The equation of ${\sigma}_r-{\Delta}K$ was established by the experimental data. Therefore, fracture mechanics parameters could be estimated by the measurement of X-ray parameters.

  • The failure analysis on fractured parts is divided into the qualitative method by naked eyes and metallurgical microscope etc. and the quantitative method by SEM and X-ray diffraction etc. X-ray fractography can be applied to contaminated surface as well as clean surface and gain the plastic deformation and the residual stress near the fractured surface. Turbine blade is subject to cyclic bending force by steam pressure and suffers fatigue damage according to the increasing operating time. Therefore, to clean up the fracture mechanism of torsion-mounted blade in nuclear plant, the fatigue and the X-ray diffraction test was performed on the 12%Cr steel fur turbine blade and the fractured parts. The correlation of X-ray parameter and fracture mechanics parameter was determined, and then the load applied to actual broken turbine blade was predicted. Failure analysis was performed by contact stress analysis and Goodman diagram of torsion-mounted blade.

  • The fatigue life of mechanical components and structures has been influenced by mechanical, material and environmental conditions. It is important to search out the load type and size for accurate cause of fracture at the damaged surface of material. The fractographic method by x-ray diffraction can utilize residual stress $\sigma$_r and half-value breadth B and find out the types and the mechanical conditions of fracture. This study showed the relationship between fracture mechanical parameters $\Delta$K, $K_{max}$ and X-ray residual stress $\sigma$_r for normalized SS41 steel with homogeneous crystal structure and M.E.F. dual phase steel(martensite encapsulated islands of ferrite). The fatigue crack propagation tests were carried out under stress ratios 0.1 and 0.5. The x-ray diffraction technique according to crack propatation direction was applied to fatigue fractured surface. Residual stress $\sigma$_r was independent on stress ratios by arrangement of $\Delta$K. The equation of $\sigma$_r$\Delta$K was established by the experimental data. Therefore, fracture mechanical parameters can be estimated can be estimated by the measurement of X-ray parameters.

  • Fretting damage can be observed in automobile and railway vehicle, fossil and nuclear power plant, aircraft etc. In the present study, railway axle material RSA1 used for evaluation of fretting fatigue life. Plain and fretting fatigue tests were carried out using rotary bending fatigue tester with proving ring and bridge type contact pad. Through these test, the following results are obtained: 1) it is found that the fretting fatigue limit of standard specimen decreased about 37% compared to the plain fatigue limit. 2) The early crack of Shinkansen type specimens initiated in contact area and final fractured below samp=214 MPa. 3) The early crack of all TGV type specimens initiated in rounded area and fractured. 4) Tire tracks and rubbed scars were observed in the oblique crack region and fatigue crack growth region of fracture surface. 5) The wear debris is observed on the contact surface, and oblique cracks at an earlier stage are initiated in contact area. These results can be used as useful data in a structural integrity evaluation of railway axle.

  • X-ray stress constant, K, was determined for the diffraction line of (211)plane by using Cr-K$\alpha$ radiation. K was -340.87 MPa/deg. Fatigue crack propagation tests of SS41 steel were conducted under stress ratios of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5. The half-value breadth of X-ray diffraction profile was measured at and beneath the fracture surface. The half-value breadth, B, on the fracture surface was found to increase with increasing $K_max$. The value of B was influenced by stress ratio in SS41 steel. The half-value breadth took the maximum value at the borden of reversed plastic zone, while it approached to the initial (pre-fatigue) value near the boundary of monotonic plastic zone. The maximum depth of the plasticzone was evaluated on the basis of the half-value breadth distribution. The depth $\omega$$_y$ is related to $K_max$by the following equation : $\omega$$_y$ = $\alpha$($K_max$/$\sigma$$_y$$)^2$ where .sigma.$\sigma$$_y$ is the yield strength obtength obtained in tension test .alpha.is 0.136 for SS41 steel.

The fatigue crack propagation test were carried out and X-ray diffraction technique was applied to fatigue fractured surface. The change in X-ray parameters(residual stress, half-value breadth) according to the depth of fatigue fractured surface were investigated. The depth of maximum plastic zone, $w_y$, were determined on the basis of the distribution of the half-value breadth for normalized SS41 steel and that of the residual stress for M.E.F. dual phase steel. $K_{max}$ could be estimated by the measurement of $w_y$.
