  • In this study, spur and helical box models of an existing machine tool are investigated using structural and fatigue analyses. As the helical box model is shown to have less stress and deformation than those characteristics of the spur box model, the helical box has more strength and more transmission efficiency on the structure. In terms of fatigue analysis, the helical box model has more repeated fatigue strength than that of the spur box model. These study results can be effectively utilized in the design of real gear boxes of machine tools by anticipating and investigating prevention and durability against damage.

  • In this paper a computer aided analysis method is proposed for durability assessment in the early design stages using dynamic analysis, stress analysis and fatigue life prediction method. From dynamic analysis of a vehicle suspension system, dynamic load time histories of a suspension component are calculated. From the dynamic load time histories and the stress of the suspension component, a dynamic stress time history at the critical location is produced using the superposition principle. Using linear damage law and cycle counting method, fatigue life cycle is calculated. The predicted fatigue life cycle is verified by experimental durability tests.

  • This study addresses the evaluation of the durability of reinforced concrete marine structures subjected to fatigue loading. The laboratory investigation was carried out on full and half size reinforced concrete specimens with three different water cement ratios (0.3, 0.4, and 0.56), static and fatigue loading conditions, and epoxy-coated and regular black steel reinforcements. The marine tidal zone was simulated by alternate filling and draining of the tank (wet and dry cycled), and a galvanostatic corrosion technique to accelerate corrosion of reinforcement was used. Half-cell potentials and changes of crack width were measured periodically during the exposure and followed by ultimate strength testing. The significant findings include adverse effect of fatigue loading, existence of an explicit size effect, poor performance of epoxy coated steel, and negative effect of increasing water/cement ratio.

  • This study analyzes structural stress and fatigue about three types of automotive wheels. As maximum equivalent stresses at 1, 2 and 3 types become lower than the yield stress of material and deformations become minute, theses types are thought be safe on durability. Type 2 model has the most fatigue life among three kinds of types and the rest of models with fatigue lives are shown in the order of type 1 and 3. As the most fatigue frequency of type 2 model happens at the state of average stress and amplitude stress on the stress range narrower than type 1 or 3, type 2 model becomes most stable. In case of type 2 with the state near the average stress of 0 MPa and the amplitude stress of 300MPa, the possibility of maximum damage becomes 30%. This stress state can be shown as the most damage possibility. These study results can be effectively utilized with the design on automotive wheel by anticipating and investigating prevention and durability against its damage.

  • This study investigates the structural analysis result with vibration and fatigue on 3 kinds of bicycle saddle models. When the static load applies on the upper plane of model, maximum stress becomes within the allowable stress in case of model 1. As the value of Stress or deformation becomes lower on the order of model types 1, 2 and 3, these models become more stabilized or safer at durability in this order. On the vibration analysis, model type 1 has the maximum stress or deformation more than 5 times by comparing with model type 1 or 2. Model type 1 becomes most excellent on vibration durability. As maximum displacement due to vibration happens in case of model type 3, it becomes unstabilized. But the stresses of model types 1, 2 and 3 become within the allowable stress and these models are considered to be safe. At the status of the severest fatigue load, model type 3 becomes safer than model type 1 or 2. This study result is applied with the design of safe bicycle saddle and it can be useful to improve the durability by predicting prevention against the deformation due to its vibration and fatigue.

  • In this study, 2 kinds of twist run models as exercise equipments are compared by durability analyses of fatigue and vibration. Maximum equivalent stresses are shown as 3.3 MPa and 16.6 MPa at the parts of stress concentrations at models 1 and 2. As the values becomes much lower than yield stress of this models, these models are shown to be safe designs. Model 1 becomes stronger than model 2 at natural frequency analysis. Fatigue lives become lowest at four axis parts and one axis part respectively in cases of models 1 and 2. Maximum damage probability at fatigue is shown to be 2.4% near the average stress of 0 in case of model 1 but this probability becomes 0.6 % in case of model 2. Model 1 has the maximum damage possibility 4 times more than model 2 at these states. As the result of this study is applied by the design of twist run, the prevention on fatigue damage and the durability are predicted.

  • Half-beads of multi-layer-steel cylinder head gaskets take charge of sealing of lubrication oil and coolant between the cylinder head and the block. Since the head lifts off periodically due to the combustion gas pressure, both the dynamic sealing performance and the fatigue durability are essential for the gasket. A finite element model of the halfbead has been developed and verified with experimental data. The half-bead forming process was included in the model to consider the residual stress effects. The model is employed to assess the dependence of the sealing performance and the fatigue durability on the design parameters of half-bead such as the width and height of bead and the flat region length. The assessment results show that the sealing performance can be enhanced without significant deterioration of the fatigue durability in a certain range of the half-bead width. In the other cases the improvement of sealing performance is accompanied by the loss of the fatigue durability. Among three parameters, the bead width has the strongest influence.

  • The exhaust system of automobile is faced with random or spectrum types of fatigue loads during usage life and so needs to be closely estimated for quality and performance to have enough certainty on design endurance lift during preliminary design process. Structural operation conditions, operation load history, property of material and manufacturing process etc. should be considered by performing experiment approach. Using the software program for predicting fatigue life quickly and exactly in preliminary design stage saves plenty of time and cost generated by fatigue tests. In this paper, fatigue life prediction was performed on the basis of fatigue analysis using MSC/FATIGUE and load data from field test and the life of development items was estimated and compared through the results.

  • In this study, Two kinds of pad models with different configurations as the part of brake system are investigated by structural and fatigue analyses. As the maximum equivalent stress of model 2 becomes higher to the extent of 60% than that of model 1, model 2 can endure more load than model 1. In cases of two kinds of models, the maximum fatigue life at 'Sample history' becomes longer 60 times than 'SAE bracket history' and this life in case of 'SAE transmission' becomes longer 3.5 times than the case of 'SAE bracket history'. Maximum fatigue damages in cases of 'SAE bracket history', 'SAE transmission' and 'Sample history' at model 1 become higher than model 2. Model 2 is thought to have more fatigue durability than model 1. These study results can be effectively utilized with the design of brake pad by anticipating and investigating prevention and durability against its fatigue damage.

  • The automotive headrest is intended to provide comfort, safety, convenience and durability to a vehicle's passengers and driver. In this study, impact and fatigue analyses were carried out for three headrest shape models-A, B and C. These models have the same material properties and the same force was applied to them. Impact and fatigue analyses demonstrated that all of the models obtained almost the exact same result values. This study found that all models had similar equivalent stress, deformation, fatigue life and main damage parts due to the fact that the shared same material properties. Better safety and fatigue life can be anticipated by changing the material of the headrest in order to secure more stable safety. An automotive headrest optimized for safety and durability is thought to have been developed through the impact and fatigue analyses of this study.
