  • The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effects of musical listening on anxiety in patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy. On the basis of the research criterias, 46 patients were recruited from Kang-Nam St. Mary's Hospital in Seoul from October 1 to December 31, 1995. 20 patients of them were participated as the experimental group who received musical listening session with self-selected music tapes, while 26 patients as the control group who didn't receive that session. The musical listening sessions composed of 3 periods, the pre-operation evening, just before sleeping, the operation morning. There were no differences between two groups, in terms of age education, religion, the experience of operation, the perception of uterus, and the weight(%). The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI) was used to measure anxiety on all patients. And serum cortisol levels, fasting blood sugar levels, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were collected at the day before surgery and the operation day. The results were as follows : 1. There were no significant differences in State-Anxiety between the two groups. 2. The differences of serum cortisol level between the day before surgery and the operative day were significantly lower in experimental group than in control group(P=0.03). 3. The level of fasting blood sugar was significantly decreased in experimental group(P=0.01). 4. Systolic blood pressure level was significantly decreased in experimental group(P=0.02). While Diastolic blood pressure level was not significant between two groups. It is suggested imply that the musical listening during the perioperative period may alleviate the perioperative anxiety levels in patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of physical activity on impaired fasting glucose in adults aged 20 years or older. Methods : This study utilized raw data from the 8th National Health and Nutrition Examination survey (2019~2021). The subjects of this study were 5,344 adults aged 20 years or older who were confirmed to be free of diabetes. The control variables in this study model are health behavior characteristics (subjective health status, smoking, drinking), anthropometric characteristics (body mass index), and personal background characteristics (gender, age, income level, education level, marital status). As for the analysis method, the degree of physical activity was made into a dummy variable, and a probit model was used. Results : As a result of this study, compared to quartile 1 of the relative grip strength value obtained by dividing the grip strength by the body mass index (body mass index, kg, m2), fasting blood glucose levels were significantly higher in quartile 2 (.05, p<.01), quartile 3 (.04, p<.01), and quartile 4 (.04, p<.01). It was found that the probability of belonging to the normal category was higher than that of impaired fasting glucose. In addition, in the group of adults aged 20 or older who had a lot of aerobic and anaerobic physical activity, fasting blood sugar was more likely to be in the normal category. Conclusion : Based on the results of this study, it was suggested that diabetes should be managed through physical activity in the pre-diabetic stage, as prevention is important as well as treatment. From a practical point of view, muscle strength, such as grip strength, can be identified as a reliable indicator for identifying impaired fasting glucose.

  • To evaluate the hypoglycemic effect of nano powder propolis, streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats were divided into 2 groups : diabetic control group and nano powder propolis (0.9ml) group. Then the rats were fed with nano-powder-propolis for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, oral glucose tolerance test (oral GTT) was performed and blood sugar levels after 16 hours fasting, body weights, and blood lipid levels were measured. Finally, pancreas were collected and examined by histopathology and immunohistochemistry. In conclusion, the nano-powder-propolis was effective in the treatment of diabetes due to the reduction of blood sugar level and the regeneration of damaged ${\beta}$-cells observed in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

  • This study was carried out to discover the effects of eating habits and health-related life style on blood pressure, $\gamma$-Glutamic acid Peptide Transferase($\gamma$-GPT), blood glucose and High Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol(HDL-C). 185 subjects(85 male, 100 female) were selected, who were living in the Cheonju area aged 40#s to 60#s. The mean systollic blood pressure(SBP), diastollic blood pressure (DBP), $\gamma$-GPT, fasting blood sugar(FBS) and HDL-C for all the subjects were 118mmHg, 77mmHg, 281U/l, 90mg/dl and 45mg/dl, respectively. The SBP and DBP for subuects over 60 years old were 126mmHg and 81mmHg and were significantly higher than subjects in their 40#s and 50#s(p<0.001, p<0.005). The HDL-C of the group that rarely ate breakfast was 57mg/dl and that was significantly higher than the 44mg/dl scored by those who ate breakfast everyday(p<0.05). The SBP for subjects having a snack 2-3 times/week was 125mmHg and that was significantly higher than the 114mmHg of those having a snack everyday(p<0.05). The $\gamma$-GPT for subjects consuming alcohol everyday was 44IU/L and that was significantly higher than 18IU/I of the non-drinking group(p<0.001). The $\gamma$-GPT of light smokers was 53IU/I and that was significantly higher than the 22IU/I for non-smoking participants(p<0.001). The DBP, SBP, $\gamma$-GPT, FBS and HDL-C related to exercise not significantly different. The SBP(p<0.001) and DBP(p-0.01) between age group was positively correlated. The $\gamma$-GPT between drinking frequency(p<0.001), drinking quantity(p<0.05), and smoking(p<0.05) was also positively correlated. The FBS between exercises had a negative correlation(p<0.05), and the HDL-C between breakfast had a negative correlation(p<0.05). These results indicate that decreasing drinking and smoking, when combined with appropriate exercise, will decrease the $\gamma$-GPT and fasting blood sugar level, and help preventing adult diseases.

  • It is already well known that many factors are involved in maintaining normal blood glucose level. The amount and components of meal are also thought to be some of the factors which affect the blood glucose and insulin levels. It is reported that as for Koreans sugar takes up over 75% out of 2,098 kcal, the average daily calorie intake per adult. It implies that Koreans take a high-sugar diet compared with Westerners who take $40\sim50%$ of sugar out of their total average daily calorie. For the purpose of studying diurnal variations in serum glucose, insulin and C-peptide of normal Korean adults based on ordinary Korean diet, we selceted 13 normal Korean male adults and divided them into two groups, Group I (7 persons) and Group II (6 persons). We put Group I on 3,100kcal and 75% sugar diet, and Group II on 2,100 kcal and 69% sugar diet per day for over 4 days. Serum glucose, insulin and C-peptide were checked every 30 minutes or every hour throughout 24 hours. Results are as follows: 1. As for serum glucose level, in the prep ran dial fasting state in the morning, $mean{\pm}S.D.$ of Group I was $91.1{\pm}8.2mg%$, while that of Group II is $82.5{\pm}4.4mg%$. Both groups showed peaks of increased glucose level at postprandial 1 hour after each meal. The peak returned to the level shown during the fasting state at postprandial 1 hour after breakfast while the relatively high glucose levels were maintained respectively even for 2 or 3 hours.after lunch and dinner. 2. As for serum insulin level, Group showed $mean{\pm}S.D.$ of $14.7{\pm}3.0{\mu}U/ml$ while Group II shows that of $7.0{\pm}2.6{\mu}U/ml$ in the fasting state. Group I particularly showed the largest peak from preprandial a half or one and half an hour to postprandial one hour of lunch, and made relatively small peaks $(47.7{\pm}10.8{\mu}U/ml)$ at postorandial 1 hour after breakfast and dinner. No such large peak was marked in Group II, though it showed relatively similar patterns of peak after each meal. 3. As for C-peptide, in the fasting state, Group I and Group II showed $3.50{\pm}1.85$ and $1.66{\pm}0.53ng/ml$ of $mean{\pm}S.D.$, respectively. Group II showed peaks parallel to those for insulin level. None out of seven in Group I showed expected increase in C-peptide based insulin secretion at a half or one and half an hour before lunch. On the contrary, C-peptide increased in 5 subjects out of seven in Group I at 11:00 p.m. when insulin did not increase. 4. According to the integrated concentration method for a measurement of 24-hour total. insulin secretion rate, the $mean{\pm}S.D.$ of Group I was $76.4{\pm}15.2$ U and that of Group II was $58.6{\pm}21.1$ U. The above results confirm that Koreans, when given ordinary diet of 2,100 kcal and 69%, sugar, show insulin secretion pattern essentially similar to that of Westerners. On the contrary, when they are put on a high-calorie diet of 3,100 kcal a day, 75% of which is sugar, insulin secretion can be increased before lunch without increase in blood glucose. These results implies that insulin secretion can be affected by some other factors. The observation that an increase in C-peptide after 11 : 00 p.m. independent of insulin level supports an assertion that insulin secretion and C-peptide secretion can be thought as being physiologically dissociable, and these changes of diurnal patterns in the levels of serum insulin and C-peptide are thought to be resulted from the large meal and high-carbohydrate diet.

  • This study showed the psychological symptoms, nutritional status and eating behaviors of diabetic patients. General informations on subjects nutritional status were collected by questionnaire, whereas Symptom Check List-90-Revision(SCL-90R) was used for gathering the data related to psychological problem. 34 diabetics in the hospital, aged 49$\pm$10.5 years old, were chosen as the subjects of this study. Their average height was 162.3$\pm$9.4cm and weight was 57.0$\pm$9.5kg. The average period of their suffering from DM was 54.1 weeks. Among, the subjects, 71.0% adapted diet therapy for their disease, whereas 36.7% and 40.7% did diabetic drugs and daily exercise like walking and jogging, respectively, Among 9 psychological symptoms observed, the scores of somatization, depression, anxiety, phobic anxiety and psychoticism were higher than the standard score, however they were not statistically significant. The score of paranoid ideation was lower than standard score. It was statistically significant. As the measure of their clinical status, BMI(body mass index), PIBW(percent ideal body weight) and fasting blood sugar(FBS) were selected 21.6$\pm$2.8, 102.4$\pm$14.8% and 207.8$\pm$19.9mg/이 respectively. The somatization was significantly correlated with subjects duration of DM. Subjects with psychological problems showed wrong eating behaviors. The fasting blood sugar was significantly correlated with the level of depression.

  • This study was attempted to observe leisure time physical activity pattern and its relationship to coronary risk factors (BMI, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting blood sugar). Subjects participated in this study were 277 adult male workers of an industry in Kyungpook province, Korea. Energy expenditure were measured using modified Physical Activity History questionnaire of CARDIA study by interviewing. Serum total cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar level were tested with 5 ml fasting blood and height, weight and blood pressure were masured. Data on smoking and drinking habits and others were obtained. Geometric mean of leisure time physical energy expenditure were estimated as 212.80 kcal per week for study subjects and only 22.4% of them expended 2,000 kcal or more per week in leisure time physical activity. Taking walks or hikes and jogging or running were more frequent leisure time physical activities in study subjects. Statistically significant mean differences in total weekly leisure time physical activity for all coronary risk factors were not found among three groups. Because energy expenditure of leisure time was generally low in this subjects and most of them were healthy men, we did not found that leisure time physical activity was significantly associated with coronary risk factors.

  • This study was carried out along with the 1990 6th National Tuberculosis Prevalence Survey in order to estimate the prevalence rate of diabetes mellitus among a representative adult Korean population. Fasting blood glucose was measured by diastix (Ames) using glucometer II for seventy seven percent of the population (30 year old or above) residing in 190 enumeration districts randomly sampled from 146,944 general ED. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus of the population was estimated by projecting the ratio of ${\geq}200mg/dl\;PP_2$ of fasting blood sugar level below 120 mg/dl by sex to the study population. Fasting blood glucose and 2 hr. postprandial blood glucose were measured on about 3000 subsampled individuals, and diabetes mellitus was defined by the WHO criteria-FBG${\geq}120mg/dl\;or\;PP_2{\geq}200mg/dl$ when FBG is below 120mg/dl. The results obtained are as follows : 1. Estimated prevalence(age adjusted) of diabetes mellitus was 4.6% for male and 8.1% for female. The age adjusted mean FBG was $93.9{\pm}26.2mg/dl$ for male and $102.9{\pm}31.5mg/dl$ for female. 2. The prevalence increased as age advanced with peak in $60{\sim}69$ years old age group for both sexes. 3. The mean FBG and estimated prevalence rate of diabetes mellitus varied considerably among the populations of fifteen cities and provinces ; it vaired from $87.0{\pm}17.7\;to\;104.6{\pm}34.5mg/dl$ and 1.2% to 8.9% for males, and from $93.3{\pm}25.3\;to\;116.7{\pm}38.6mg/dl$ and 3.4% to 20.8% for females. 4. The mean FBG and prevalence rates were higher among the rural population than those residing in metropolitan areas. 5. The proportion of the people previously treated among the diabetics was estimated to be a little less than one fifth. 6. Factors strongly associated with FBG were age, sex, family history of D. M., BMI, area and educational level among eleven variables.
