Korean students with much exposure to the relatively slow and clear speech used in most English classes in Korea can be expected to have difficulty understanding the casual style that is common in the everyday speech of English speakers. This research attempted to investigate an effective way to utilize casual speech in English education, by exploring the way different speech styles (clear vs. casual) affect Korean learners' comprehension of spoken English. Twenty Korean university students and two native speakers of English participated in a listening session. The English utterances were produced in different speech styles (clear slow, casual slow, clear fast, and casual fast). The Korean students were divided into two groups by English proficiency level. The results showed that the Korean students achieved 69.4% comprehension accuracy, while the native speakers of English demonstrated almost perfect results. The Korean students (especially the low-proficiency group) had more problems perceiving function words than they did perceiving content words. Responding to the different speech styles, the high-proficiency group had more difficulty listening to utterances with phonological variation than they did listening to utterances produced at a faster speed. The low-proficiency group, however, struggled with utterances produced at a faster speed more than they did with utterances with phonological variation. The pedagogical implications of the results are discussed in the concluding section.
Convolution neural networks (CNNs) show notable performance in image processing and are used as representative core models. CNNs extract and learn features from large amounts of train dataset. In general, it has a structure in which a convolution layer and a fully connected layer are stacked. The core of CNN is the convolution layer. The size of the kernel used for feature extraction and the number that affect the depth of the feature map determine the amount of weight parameters of the CNN that can be learned. These parameters are the main causes of increasing the computational complexity and memory usage of the entire neural network. The most computationally expensive components in CNNs are fully connected and spatial convolution computations. In this paper, we propose a Fourier Convolution Neural Network that performs the operation of the convolution layer in the Fourier domain. We work on modifying and improving the amount of computation by applying the fast fourier transform method. Using the MNIST dataset, the performance was similar to that of the general CNN in terms of accuracy. In terms of operation speed, 7.2% faster operation speed was achieved. An average of 19% faster speed was achieved in experiments using 1024x1024 images and various sizes of kernels.
Purpose: This study compared the effects of the elastic resistance and general training for college Taekwondo athletes, and investigated the biomechanical ability and lower extremity function according to the movement speed of the knee joint. Methods: Twenty university student Taekwondo athletes participated voluntarily in this study. The subjects performed general resistance training for four weeks, followed by elastic resistance training for another four weeks. The biomechanical parameters during the fast and slow isokinetic conditions, Y-balance ability, and vertical jump ability were measured three times: before training, after general resistance training, and after elastic resistance training. Statistical analysis was performed under isokinetic conditions and the intervention effect. Results: The biomechanical ability differed significantly between fast and slow isokinetic conditions (p<0.05). An analysis of the training method revealed a significant difference in the maximum knee extension speed and the posterior-lateral direction of the Y-balance test (p<0.05). Conclusion: Elastic resistance training had a more positive effect on the functional task performance than biomechanical factors related to muscular strength compared to general resistance training. In addition, speed-related knee biomechanical information of subjects with strong physical abilities could be utilized in sports physiotherapy.

The emerging High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard attempts to improve coding efficiency by a factor of two over H.264/Advanced Video Coding (AVC) at the expense of an increase in computational complexity. Mode decision with motion estimation (ME) is still one of the most time-consuming computations in HEVC, as it is with H.264/AVC. Thus, fast mode decisions are not only an important issue to be researched, but also an urgent one. Several schemes for fast mode decisions have been presented in reference software and in other studies. However, the conventional hierarchical mode decision can be useless when block-level parallelism is exploited. This paper proposes operation-level exploration that offers more chances for early termination. An early termination condition is checked between integer and fractional MEs and between the parts of one partition type. The fast decision points of the proposed algorithm do not overlap those in previous works. Thus, the proposed algorithms are easily used with other fast algorithms, and consequently, independent speed-up is possible.
The purpose of this study was to investigate performance evaluation of absorbing and fast-drying fabric after washing. In the comparison of absorption and fast-drying properties, there was slight difference among the materials depending on thickness, weight, and fabric structure. Absorption speed of the materials depended on the frequency of washing which might be caused by modification of fabric structure or composition fiber due to friction during washing. The ability of fast-drying of the materials was gradually decreased with the increase of washing frequency, which might be caused by fatigue accumulation on inner fiber and structural change or destruction with friction during washing.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of robo-horseback riding with changes of pelvic tilting and speeds on muscle activities of trunk and lower limb in healthy adults. Methods: Thirty healthy adults were recruited for this study. Subjects performed robo-horseback riding at three pelvic postures (anterior tilting pelvic posture: AP, neutral pelvic posture: NP, posterior pelvic posture: PP) and different speeds (moderate and fast speed). Muscle activities were recorded from the trunk muscles (rectus abdominis [RA], T2 paraspinalis [T2 PS], L2 paraspinalis [L2 PS]) and lower limb muscles (rectus femoris [RF], vastus medialis [VM], vastus lateralis [VL], biceps femoris [BF], gastrucnemius [GCM]). Results: Significantly higher RA activities were observed under the PP condition than under the AP and NP conditions at both speeds. Significantly higher L2 PS activities were observed under the AP condition than under the PP and NP conditions at both speeds. Significantly higher T2 PS activities were observed under the AP condition than under the PP and NP conditions at fast speed. However, the muscle activities of the VM and GCM did not show significant changes with changes in pelvic posture at both speeds. All muscle activities were significantly higher under the fast speed than under the moderate speed in three pelvic postures. Conclusion: There were significant differences in the changes of pelvic tilting on muscle activities of trunk and lower limb were observed in healthy adults. NP condition can be introduced the most efficienct posture for muscle activities of trunk and lower limb in robo-horseback riding.
The flow from developing a machine learning model to deploying it in a production environment suffers challenges. Efficient and reliable deployment is critical for realizing the true value of machine learning models. Bridging this gap between development and publication has become a pivotal concern in the machine learning community. FastAPI, a modern and fast web framework for building APIs with Python, has gained substantial popularity for its speed, ease of use, and asynchronous capabilities. This paper focused on leveraging FastAPI for deploying machine learning models, addressing the potentials associated with integration, scalability, and performance in a production setting. In this work, we explored the seamless integration of machine learning models into FastAPI applications, enabling real-time predictions and showing a possibility of scaling up for a more diverse range of use cases. We discussed the intricacies of integrating popular machine learning frameworks with FastAPI, ensuring smooth interactions between data processing, model inference, and API responses. This study focused on elucidating the integration of machine learning models into production environments using FastAPI, exploring its capabilities, features, and best practices. We delved into the potential of FastAPI in providing a robust and efficient solution for deploying machine learning systems, handling real-time predictions, managing input/output data, and ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
A analog disturbance observer, which is suitable for servo motor drive, was employed to suppressi control of the impact drop disturbance. The main advantage of the observer is that a fast response disturbance estimation is obtained using the detected motor cuttent and speed. And the new M/T method for motor speed detection is proposed. The method should be able to reduce the detection dead time compared with the Ohmae's M/T method. Also, the low speed control of a servo motor using instantaneous speed detection method is described. To estimate the instantaneous speed from the average speed, the speed estimator of the first order is proposed. Actually we confirmed that these methods improve the speed control performance of the servo system with experiments.
As the operating frequency of digital modules in network system becomes fast, integrity of signals between modules is regarded as a important factor in high speed system design. To guarantee the signal integrity, many factors that deteriorate quality of signal should be considered. In this paper, we survey many factors which be considered while in designing and imp]ementing the backplane for high speed router and analyze the simulation result and experimental result.
