  • Six types of planar thermal converters from TC 1 to TC 6 were designed and fabricated for the purpose of being used as practical standards to alternating current. The respective voltage responses in air and in a vacuum of TC 6, which has the smallest thermal loss, were about 4.03mV/mW and about 6.38 mV/mW. Thermal time constant of TC 6, which has also the smallest heater thermal inertia, was about 8 ms. The respective variations of AC-DC voltage and current transfer errors from sample to sample, which were measured by FRDC(fast reversed DC) method, were about $\pm$0.41 ~$\pm$0.85 ppm and about $\pm$0.15~$\pm$1.16 ppm in the frequent range of 40 Hz~10 KHz with appling 1 V and 5 mA rms sine waves to the converters. All converters investigated exhibited sufficiently low AC-DC transfer errors to be used as practical standards.

  • The goal of this study was to create a novel baculovirus expression system that does not require recombinant virus purification steps. Transfection of insect cells with transfer vectors containing barnase under control of the Cotesia plutellae bracovirus (CpBV) promoters ORF3004 or ORF3005 reduced cell growth. Co-transfection with bApGOZA DNA yielded no recombinant viruses and nonrecombinant backgrounds. To further investigate the detrimental effects of barnase on insect cells, two recombinant bacmids harboring the barnase gene under control of the CpBV promoters, namely bAcFast-3004ProBarnase and bAcFast-3005ProBarnase, were constructed. While no viral replication was observed when only the recombinant bacmids were transfected, recombinant viruses were generated when the bacmids were co-transfected with the transfer vector, pAcUWPolh, through substitution of the barnase gene with the native polyhedrin gene by homologous recombination. Moreover, no non-recombinant backgrounds were detected from unpurified recombinant stocks using PCR analysis. These results indicate that CpBV promoters can be used to improve baculovirus expression vectors by means of lethal gene expression under the control of these promoters.

  • Sodium-cooled fast breeder reactors use liquid sodium as a moderator and coolant to transfer heat from the reactor core. The main hazard associated with sodium is its rapid reaction with water. Sodium-water reaction (SWR) takes place when water or vapor leak into the sodium side through a crack on a heat-transfer tube in a steam generator. If the SWR continues for some time, the SWR will damage the surface of the defective area, causing it to enlarge. This self-enlargement of the crack is called "self-wastage phenomena." A stepwise numerical evaluation model of the self-wastage phenomena was devised using a computational code of multicomponent multiphase flow involving a sodium-water chemical reaction: sodiumwater reaction analysis physics of interdisciplinary multiphase flow (SERAPHIM). The temperature of gas mixture and the concentration of NaOH at the surface of the tube wall are obtained by a numerical calculation using SERAPHIM. Averaged thermophysical properties are used to assess the local wastage depth at the tube surface. By reflecting the wastage depth to the computational grid, the self-wastage phenomena are evaluated. A two-dimensional benchmark analysis of an SWAT (Sodium-Water reAction Test rig) experiment is carried out to evaluate the feasibility of the numerical model. Numerical results show that the geometry and scale of enlarged cracks show good agreement with the experimental result. Enlarged cracks appear to taper inward to a significantly smaller opening on the inside of the tube wall. The enlarged outer diameter of the crack is 4.72 mm, which shows good agreement with the experimental data (4.96 mm).

  • A two-dimensional optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) encoder/decoder, which is composed of add/drop filters and all-pass filters for delay operation, is proposed. An example design is presented, and its feasibility is illustrated through numerical simulations. The chip area of the proposed OCDMA encoder/decoder could be about one-third that of a previous OCDMA device employing delay waveguides. Its performance is numerically investigated using the transfer-matrix method combined with the fast Fourier transform. The autocorrelation peak level over the maximum cross-correlation level for incorrect wavelength hopping and spectral phase code combinations is greater than 3 at the center of the correctly decoded pulse, which assures a bit error rate lower than 10-3, corresponding to the forward error-correction limit.

  • New and renewable energy sources have drawn attention because of climate change. Many studies have been carried out in waste-to-energy field. Fast pyrolysis of waste lignocelluosic biomass is one of the waste-to-energy technologies. Bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) reactor is widely used for fast pyrolysis of the biomass. In BFB pyrolyzer, bubble behavior influences on the chemical reaction. Accordingly, in the present study, hydrodynamic characteristics and fast pyrolysis reaction of waste lignocellulosic biomass occurring in a BFB pyrolyzer are scrutinized. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of the fast pyrolysis reactor is carried out by using Eulerian-Granular approach. And two-stage semi-global kinetics is applied for modeling the fast pyrolysis reaction of waste lignocellulosic biomass. To summarize, generation and ascendant motion of bubbles in the bed affect particle behavior. Thus biomass particles are well mixed with hot sand and consequent rapid heat transfer occurs from sand to biomass particles. As a result, primary reaction is observed throughout the bed. And reaction rate of tar formation is the highest. Consequently, tar accounts for 66wt.% of the product gas. However, secondary reaction occurs mostly in the freeboard. Therefore, it is considered that bubble behavior and particle motions hardly influences on the secondary reaction.

  • This paper presents a fast back-type transfer device for snack food processing that uses the inertia of transferred material. A conventional conveying system is a drive system that uses a belt conveyor and mechanical crank, which generate noise and vibration and cause environmental pollution. Vibration and noise are reduced in the proposed fast back feeding device by using a counterweight. The crank drive unit was replaced with a linear servomotor, and an equilibrium device was designed to balance the force due to acceleration. This makes it is possible to adjust the forward and backward speed and acceleration through PLC control. A vibration damper device offsets the vibration force of the periodic shock form. The main cause of the vibration was identified through vibration analysis, and reduction measures were established. We verified the effectiveness of the vibration by making a prototype and performing about 10 vibration tests. Because no mechanical transducer is needed, energy loss, noise, and vibration do not occur, and the operating speed is not limited.

  • In this paper, we discuss the program implementation and system optimization for the effective transfer of huge amount of data. In VLBI which is observing the celestial bodies by using radio telescope hundreds thousands km apart, it is necessary for each VLBI observatory to transfer up to terabytes of observed data. For this reason, e-VLBI research based on advanced network is being actively carried out for the transfer of data efficiently. Following this trend, in this paper, we discuss design & implementation of system for the high speed Gbps data transfer rates. As a data transfer protocol, we use UDP for designing data transmission program with much higher speeds than currently available via VTP(VLBI Transport Protocol). Tsunami-UDP algorithms is applied to implementing data transfer program so that transmission performance could be maximize, also we make it possible to transfer observed data more fast and reliable through optimization of computer systems in each VLBI statopm.

  • This paper presents a novel Parameter-Independent Fictive-Axis (PIFA) approach for the Voltage-Oriented Control (VOC) algorithm used in grid-tied single-phase inverters. VOC is based on the transformation of the single-phase grid current into the synchronous reference frame. As a result, an orthogonal current signal is needed. Traditionally, this signal has been obtained from fixed time delays, digital filters or a Hilbert transformation. Nevertheless, these solutions present stability and transient drawbacks. Recently, the Fictive Axis Emulation (FAE) VOC has emerged as an alternative for the generation of the quadrature current signal. FAE requires detailed information of the grid current filter along with its transfer function for signal creation. When the transfer function is not accurate, the direct and quadrature current components present steady-state oscillations as the fictive two-phase system becomes unbalanced. Moreover, the digital implementation of the transfer function imposes an additional computing burden on the VOC. The PIFA VOC presented in this paper, takes advantage of the reference current to create the required orthogonal current, which effectively eliminates the need for the filter transfer function. Moreover, the fictive signal amplitude and phase do not change with a frequency drift, which results in an increased reliability. This yields a fast, linear and stable system that can be installed without fine tuning. To demonstrate the good performance of the PIFA VOC, simulation and experimental results are presented.

  • Liquid-liquid extractions by use of hollow fiber membrane module are fast because of the large surface area per volume. In these membranes, the extractant and feed can be contacted at high speed and two flows are completely independent, so there are no problems with loading and channeling. In this paper, it was investigated the selectivities of extractants for extraction of heavy metals from aqueous solution into organic extractants by using the hollow fiber membrane. To identify the effect of distribution ratio on mass transfer in the membrane, we also compared the distribution ratio with mass transfer coefficient. From these experiments for the system with high distribution ratio, effect of the distribution ratio on mass transfer was weak compare with the low distribution ratio system in the hollow fiber membrane.

  • The conventional thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) setup for the graphene synthesis has mainly used convective heat transfer in order to heat a catalyst (e.g. Cu) up to $1,000^{\circ}C$. Although the conventional CVD has been so far widely accepted as the most appropriate candidate enabling mass-production of high-quality graphene, this method has stillremained under the standard for the commercialization largely due to the poor productivity arisen out of the required long processing time. Here, we introduced a fast and efficient synthetic route toward CVD-graphene. Unlike the conventional CVD using convection heat transfer, we adopted a CVD setup utilizing conduction heat transfer between Cu catalyst and rapid heating source. The high thermal conductive nature of Cu and the employed rapid heating source led to the remarkable reduction in processing timeas compared to the conventional convection based CVD (Fig. 1A), moreover, the synthesized graphene was turned out to have comparable quality to that synthesized by the conventional CVD (Fig. 1B). For the optimization of the conduction based CVD process, the parametric studies were thoroughly performed using through Raman spectroscopy and electrical sheet resistance measurement. Our approach is thought to be worth considerable in order to enhance productivity of the CVD graphene in the industry.
