A Fast Motion Estimation Algorithm Based on Multi-Resolution Frame Structure (다 해상도 프레임 구조에 기반한 고속 움직임 추정 기법)

  • We present a multi-resolution block matching algorithm (BMA) for fast motion estimation At the coarsest level, a motion vector (MV) having minimum matching error is chosen via a full search, and a MV with minimum matching error is concurrently found among the MVs of the spatially adjacent blocks Here, to examine the spatial MVs accurately, we propose an efficient method for searching full resolution MV s without MV quantization even at the coarsest level The chosen two MV s are used as the initial search centers at the middle level At the middle level, the local search is performed within much smaller search area around each search center If the method used at the coarsest level is adopted here, the local searches can be done at integer-pel accuracy A MV having minimum matching error is selected within the local search areas, and then the final level search is performed around this initial search center Since the local searches are performed at integer-pel accuracy at the middle level, the local search at the finest level does not take an effect on the overall performance So we can skip the final level search without performance degradation, thereby the search speed increases Simulation results show that in comparison with full search BMA, the proposed BMA without the final level search achieves a speed-up factor over 200 with minor PSNR degradation of 02dB at most, under a normal MPEG2 coding environment Furthermore, our scheme IS also suitable for hardware implementation due to regular data-flow.

Adaptive Hard Decision Aided Fast Decoding Method using Parity Request Estimation in Distributed Video Coding (패리티 요구량 예측을 이용한 적응적 경판정 출력 기반 고속 분산 비디오 복호화 기술)

  • In distributed video coding, low complexity encoder can be realized by shifting encoder-side complex processes to decoder-side. However, not only motion estimation/compensation processes but also complex LDPC decoding process are imposed to the Wyner-Ziv decoder, therefore decoder-side complexity has been one important issue to improve. LDPC decoding process consists of numerous iterative decoding processes, therefore complexity increases as the number of iteration increases. This iterative LDPC decoding process accounts for more than 60% of whole WZ decoding complexity, therefore it can be said to be a main target for complexity reduction. Previously, HDA (Hard Decision Aided) method is introduced for fast LDPC decoding process. For currently received parity bits, HDA method certainly reduces the complexity of decoding process, however, LDPC decoding process is still performed even with insufficient amount of parity request which cannot lead to successful LDPC decoding. Therefore, we can further reduce complexity by avoiding the decoding process for insufficient parity bits. In this paper, therefore, a parity request estimation method is proposed using bit plane-wise correlation and temporal correlation. Joint usage of HDA method and the proposed method achieves about 72% of complexity reduction in LDPC decoding process, while rate distortion performance is degraded only by -0.0275 dB in BDPSNR.

An Improved Early Detection of all-zero DCT Coefficients for fast Video Encoding (고속 동영상 압축을 위한 개선된 DCT 및 양자화 과정 생략 방식)

  • In this paper, we propose an improved early detection of all-zero DCT coefficients for fast video encoding. From the experimental observation, it is shown that the performance of the conventional method is limited because of the imprecision sufficient condition. When the calculation of the SAD in motion estimation is simply modified, more precise sufficient condition is derived from the theoretical analysis. Based on this idea, DCT and the quantization stages are effectively skipped in the proposed algorithm with no image degradation. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves computational saving over 10% compared to the conventional method.

A Fast Block Matching Algorithm Using Mean Absolute Error of Neighbor Search Point and Search Region Reduction (이웃 탐색점에서의 평균 절대치 오차 및 탐색영역 줄임을 이용한 고속 블록 정합 알고리듬)

  • In this paper, we propose a fast block matching algorithm using the mean absolute error (MAE) of neighbor search point and search region reduction. The proposed algorithm is composed of two stages. At the first stage,the search region is divided into nonoverlapped 3$\times$3 areas and MAE of the center point of each area iscalculated. The minimum MAE value of all the calculated MAE's is determined as reference MAE. At thesecond stage, because the possibility that final motion vector exist near the position of reference MAE is veryhigh, we use smaller search region than first stage, And, using the MAE of center point of each area, the lowerbound of rest search point of each area is calculated and block matching process is performed only at the searchpoints that the lower bound is smaller than reference MAE. By doing so, we can significantly reduce thecomputational complexity while keep the increasement of motion estimation error small.

  • It is a weak point of the motion estimation technique for video compression that the predicted video encoding algorithm requires higher-order computational complexity. To reduce the computational complexity of encoding algorithms, researchers introduced techniques such as 3D-WT that don't require motion prediction. One of the weakest points of previous 3D-WT studies is that they require too much memory for encoding and too long delay for decoding. In this paper, we propose a technique called `FS (Fast playable and Scalable) 3D-WT' This technique uses a modified Haar wavelet transform algorithm and employs improved encoding algorithm for lower memory and shorter delay requirement. We have executed some tests to compare performance of FS 3D-WT and 3D-V. FS 3D-WT has exhibited the same high compression rate and the same short processing delay as 3D-V has.

  • H.264/AVC 비디오 압축 표준은 압축 효율을 높이기 위해 다양한 크기의 블록을 사용하여 화면 사이의 움직임 예측을 수행한다. 세밀한 움직임 예측으로 인해 기존의 동영상 표준보다 압축 효율을 높일 수 있었지만, 복잡도도 증가하는 단점이 있다. 따라서, H.264/AVC의 고속 움직임 추정 기법은 필수적이다. H.264/AVC에서 사용하는 움직임 예측 방법은 고정된 탐색 영역 안에서 모든 정수 화소 단위로 최적의 움직임 벡터를 계산한다. 불필요한 정수 화소까지 움직임을 예측하므로 계산양이 증가한다. 본 논문에서는 움직임 벡터의 시간적 상관도와 공간적 상관도를 이용하여 가변적으로 탐색 영역의 크기를 조절하는 방법과 적응적인 초기 시작점 결정 방법을 제안했다. 현재 매크로블록과 참조 화면 사이의 거리를 고려하여 시간적 상관도와 공간적 상관도의 탐색 영역 비중을 가변적으로 조절했다. 또한 참조 화면과 현재 매크로블록 사이의 거리가 멀어질수록 초기 시작점의 정확도를 높이기 위해 초기 시작점을 예측 움직임 벡터와 이전 참조 화면에서 결정된 최적의 움직임 벡터의 평균으로 결정했다. 제안하는 방법은 기존의 전 영역 탐색 방법과 유사한 부호화 성능을 보이면서 움직임 예측 시간이 평균 53.98% 감소하는 것을 확인할 수 있다.

A Fast Sub-pixel Motion Estimation Algorithm Using Motion Characteristics of Variable Block Sizes (가변블록에서의 움직임 특성을 이용한 부화소 단위 고속 움직임 예측 방법)

  • 본 논문에서는 H.264 동영상 표준의 가변 움직임 블록을 위한 고속 움직임 예측 기법을 제안한다. 움직임 예측은 H.264의 비디오 코딩 과정에서 가장 많은 연산량을 차지하는 중요한 처리과정이다. 움직임 예측과정에서 정수배 화소 단위에서의 탐색에 비하여, 부화소 단위까지의 움직임 추정은 실제 움직임 벡터를 찾아낼 수 있지만, 이를 구하기 위한 계산량이 늘어나는 문제가 있다. 본 논문에서는 기준점을 기준으로 기준점으로부터 $\pm1$ 화소 내에서 두 번째로 작은 오차 값이 있는 특성 및 부화소 단위의 화소 보간 특성을 이용하여 움직임 추정 과정에서 탐색점을 줄임으로써 연산 처리 속도를 증가시키고, 계산의 복잡도를 줄이는 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 제안한 방법에서는 정수 화소 단위에서의 가장 작은 SATD를 갖는 점과 참조 영상으로부터 추출한 PMV를 비교하여 기준점을 정한 후, 기준점 주위의 8개의 화소 위치 가운데 두 번째로 SATD값이 작은 점을 찾아 해당 방향으로 1/2 화소 단위의 움직임 추정을 수행하였고, 1/4 화소 단위에서도 1/2 화소단위에서 두 번째로 SATD가 작은 점 방향으로 움직임 추정을 실행하였다. 그 결과 기존의 JM에서 사용한 고속 움직임 예측 알고리즘에 비해 PSNR값에 큰 변화가 없고, 움직임 벡터 예측 시간 면에서 약 18%의 시간을 줄이는 결과를 보였다.

  • This paper proposes a DSP optimization solution of rain detection and removal algorithm. We propose rain detection and removal algorithms considering camera motion, and also presents optimization results in algorithm level and DSP level. At algorithm level, this paper utilizes a block level binary pattern analysis, and reduces the operation time by using the fast motion estimation algorithm. Also, the algorithm is optimized at DSP level through inter memory optimization, EDMA, and software pipelining for real-time operation. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to the other algorithms in terms of visual quality as well as processing speed.

Velocity Pairing in Motion Estimation using Periodogram (Periodogram을 이용한 움직임 추정에서의 속도 Pairing)

  • A fast multiple object motion detection method using periodogram has been proposed. Each frame is projected to vertical and horizontal directions, and then temporal FFT is applied. A line in two dimensional frequency domain indicates velocity. To estimate the velocity of an object, we intergrate along a line which passes through the origin in frequency domain. If a frame contains multiple moving objects, multiple peaks are detected corresponding to the velocity of each object. After pairing these peaks, we can determine the velocities of an object. In the proposal method we can easily pair horizontal and vertical velocity components efficiently with simple computation by combining projections in 45$^{\circ}$ and 135 $^{\circ}$ directions in addition to the vertical and horizontal direction.

A method of Fast motion estimation using Motion characteristics of Macro-blocks in Search range (탐색 영역내 매크로 블록 움직임 특성을 이용한 고속 움직임 예측 방법)

  • 본 논문에서는 움직임 추정을 위한 탐색 영역내의 스캔 방법을 움직임 벡터가 나올 확률에 근거하여 가변적으로 적용하여 불필요한 후보 블록을 제거하는 PDE(patial distortion elimination) 기반의 고속 블록 매칭 알고리즘을 제안한다. 제안한 방법은 기존의 방법보다 불필요한 계수를 효율적으로 제거하기 위하여 탐색 영역 안에서 움직임 벡터가 존재 할 확률이 가장 높은 영역은 전영역 탐색을 적용하고, 움직임 벡터가 존재할 확률이 낮은 영역은 한 픽셀 건너 뛰어서 블록 정합하여 계산 비용을 효율적으로 감소시켯다. 제안한 알고리즘은 극히 낮은 화질 저하를 가지며, 기존의 H.264에서 사용되고 있는 전역 탐색 알고리즘에 비해 P프레임의 경우 85% 이상의 계산 비용 감소가 있어 H.264를 이용하는 비디오 압축 응용 분야에 유용하게 사용될 수 있을 것이다.
