A high speed motion vector estimation using 5-directional search algorithm (5-방향 탐색 알고리듬을 이용한 고속 움직임벡터 예측)

  • This paper presents a fast motion estimation algorithm, 5DS, useful for video coding. We first try block matching to 4 directions(N, E, W, S) to estimate motions in this algorith, since most of motions in video are oriented to those direction, and then try one additional diagonal matching between the matching ponts having small MADs. It makesthis algorithm possible for searching through a diagonal direction which is not adequate to logarithmic (LOG) search algorithm. This proposed algorithm has almost same PSNR but, 1.9, 1.2 times faster than classical block matching methods such as three steps search(TSS) and LOG search algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose the new and simple method for sub-pixel block search algorithm by only using integer-pixel for motion estimation and compensation. In many papers, the fast search block match algorithms based on TSS have been proposed. However, these methods could be achieved a little reduction of the computational complexity. All of searching points by 1/4-pixel have own predicted integer-pixel SAD array. Therefor, if we know initial nine SAD values by integer, which is on the searching area of the reference frame, then we can find optimal searching point by 1/4-pixel, directly.

  • In Distributed Video Coding(DVC), a low complexity encoder can be realized by shifting complex processes of encoder such as motion estimation to decoder. Since not only motion estimation/compensation processes but also channel decoding process needs to be performed at DVC decoder, the complexity of a decoder is significantly increased in consequence. Therefore, various fast channel decoding methods are proposed for the most computationally complex part, which is the channel decoding process in DVC decoding. As the channel decoding process becomes faster using various methods, however, the complexity of the other processes are relatively highlighted. For instance, the complexity of side information generation process in the DVC decoder is relatively increased. In this paper, therefore, a fast method for the DVC decoding is proposed by using adaptive search range method in side information generation process. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves time saving of about 63% in side information generation process, while its rate distortion performance is degraded only by about 0.17% in BDBR.

Analysis of Camera Rotation Using Three Symmetric Motion Vectors in Video Sequence (동영상에서의 세 대칭적 움직임벡터를 이용한 카메라 회전각 분석)

  • This paper proposes a camera motion estimation technique using special relations of motion vectors of geometrically symmetrical triple points of two consecutive views of single camera. The proposed technique uses camera-induced motion vectors and their relations other than feature points and epioplar constraints. As contrast to the time consuming iterations or numerical methods in the calculation of E-matrix or F-matrix induced by epipolar constraints, the proposed technique calculates camera motion parameters such as panning, tilting, rolling, and zooming at once by applying the proposed linear equation sets to the motion vectors. And by devised background discriminants, it effectively reflects only the background region into the calculation of motion parameters, thus making the calculation more accurate and fast enough to accommodate MPEG-4 requirements. Experimental results on various types of sequences show the validity and the broad applicability of the proposed technique.

Low Energy Motion Estimation Architecture using Energy Management Algorithm (에너지 관리 알고리즘을 이용한 저전력 움직임 추정기 구조)

  • Computation of multimedia data increases in portable devices with the advances of the mobile and personal communication services. The energy management of such devices is very important for the battery-powered operation hours. The motion estimation in a video encoder requires huge amount of computation, and hence, consumes the largest portion of the energy consumption. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture that a low energy management scheme can be applied with several fast-search algorithms. The energy-constrained Vdd hopping (ECVH) technique reduces power consumption of the motion estimation by adaptively changing the search algorithm, the operating frequency, and the supply voltage using the remaining slack time within given power-budget. We show that the ECVH can be applied to the architecture, and that the power consumption can be efficiently reduced.

Modified 3-step Search Motion Estimation Algorithm for Effective Early Termination (효과적인 조기 중단 기법을 위한 변형된 3단계 탐색 움직임 추정 알고리즘)

  • Motion estimation occupies most of the required computation in video compression, and many fast search algorithms were propsoed to reduce huge computation. SAD (sum-of-absolute difference) calculation is the most computation-intensive process in the motion estimation. Early termination is widely used in SAD calculation, where SAD calculation is terminated and it proceeds to next search position if partial SAD during SAD calculation exceeds current minimum SAD. In this paper, we proposed a modified 3-step search algorithm for effective early termination where only search order of search positions are adaptive rearranged. Simulation results show that the proposed motion estimation algorithm reduces computation by 17~30% over conventional 3-step search algorithm without extra computation, while maintaining same performance.

  • In this paper we propose the adaptive scheme to place more search points as long as the operation tapability of the motion estimator in the video codec permits. And the proposed algorithm takes advantage of the intuitive fact that the quality of the decoded video is more degraded as the spatial frequency of the corresponding block is increased due to the augmentation of local minima per unit area. Thererore, we propose the scheme to enhance the quality by locating relatively more search points in the block with high frequency components by analyzing the spatial frequencies of the video sequence. As a result, the proposed scheme can adaptively place more search points possibly permitted by the motion estimator and guarantees better quality compared to the TSS and FS.

Fast Transcoding from H.264 to MPEG-4 (H.264에서 MPEG-4로 빠른 트랜스코딩)

  • This paper proposed two transcodiing methods, which maintain the same spatio-temporal resolution and reduce a spatial resolution, to convert a H.264 video bitstream into an MPEG-4 video bitstream. When the H.264 video bitstream is transformed into the MPEG-4 video bitstream, the conversions between H.264 block types and MPEG-4 block types are performed by minimizing distortion and the ${\times}4$ block-based motion vector mapping is performed. The proposed two transcoding methods run 4.14~5.1 times as fast as the cascaded transcoding methods in MPEG-4 encoder side, while the PSNR (peak-signal-to ratio) is slightly degrade with maximum 0.3dB.

Motion Simplification of Virtual Character (가상 캐릭터의 동작 단순화 기법)

  • The level-of-detail (LoD), which is a method of reducing polygons on mesh, is one of the most fundamental techniques in real-time rendering. In this paper, we propose a novel level-of-detail technique applied to the virtual character's motion (Motion LoD). The movement of a virtual character can be defined as the transformation of each joint and it's relation to the mesh. The basic idea of the proposed 'Motion LoD' method is to reduce number of joints in an articulated figure and minimize the error between original and simplified motion. For the motion optimization, we propose an error estimation method and a linear system reconstructed from this error estimation for a fast optimization. The proposed motion simplification method is effectively useful for motion editing and real-time crowd animation.

A Fast Block Matching Algorithm using Unit-Diamond and Flat-Hexagonal Search Patterns (단위 다이아몬드와 납작한 육각패턴을 이용한 고속 블록 정합 알고리즘)

  • In the block matching algorithm, search patterns of different shapes or sizes and the distribution of motion vectors have a large impact on both the searching speed and the image quality. In this paper, we propose a new fast block matching algorithm using the unit-diamond search pattern and the flat-hexagon search pattern. Our algorithm first finds the motion vectors that are close to the center of search window using the unit-diamond search pattern, and then fastly finds the other motion vectors that are not close to the center of search window using the flat-hexagon search pattern. Through experiments, compared with the hexagon-based search algorithm(HEXBS), the proposed unit-diamond and flat-hexagonal pattern search algorithm(UDFHS) improves as high as 11∼51% in terms of average number of search point per motion vector estimation and improves about 0.05∼0.74㏈ in terms of PSNR(Peak Signal to Noise Ratio).
