Fast Full Search Block Matching Algorithm Using The Search Region Subsampling and The Difference of Adjacent Pixels (탐색 영역 부표본화 및 이웃 화소간의 차를 이용한 고속 전역 탐색 블록 정합 알고리듬)

  • In this paper, we propose a fast full search block matching algorithm using the search region subsampling and the difference of adjacent pixels in current block. In the proposed algorithm, we calculate the lower bound of mean absolute difference (MAD) at each search point using the MAD value of neighbor search point and the difference of adjacent pixels in current block. After that, we perform block matching process only at the search points that need block matching process using the lower bound of MAD at each search point. To calculate the lower bound of MAD at each search point, we need the MAD value of neighbor search point. Therefore, the search points are subsampled at the factor of 4 and the MAD value at the subsampled search points are calculated by the block matching process. And then, the lower bound of MAD at the rest search points are calculated using the MAD value of the neighbor subsampled search point and the difference of adjacent pixels in current block. Finally, we discard the search points that have the lower bound of MAD value exceed the reference MAD which is the minimum MAD value of the MAD values at the subsampled search points and we perform the block matching process only at the search points that need block matching process. By doing so, we can reduce the computation complexity drastically while the motion compensated error performance is kept the same as that of full search block matching algorithm (FSBMA). The experimental results show that the proposed method has a much lower computational complexity than that of FSBMA while the motion compensated error performance of the proposed method is kept same as that of FSBMA.

Fast Uneven Multi-Hexagon-Grid Search Algorithm for Integer Pel Motion Estimation of H.264 (H.264 의 고속 정수 단위 화소 움직임 예측을 위한 개선된 Uneven Multi-Hexagon-grid 검색 알고리즘)

  • 본 논문에서는 H.264 표준화 기구인 Joint Video Team(JVT) 권고안의 정수 단위 화소 움직임 예측을 위한 Unsymmetrical-cross Multi-Hexagon-grid Search(UMHexagonS) 알고리즘에서 Uneven Multi-Hexagon-grid Search(UMHGS) 부분을 개선한 알고리즘을 제안한다. 제안하는 알고리즘은 이전 프레임의 동일위치 또는 상위 모드에서 이미 선택된 움직임 벡터(MV: Motion Vector)를 이용하여 신호 대 잡음 비(PSNR: Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) 및 평균 비트 율(Average Bitrates)을 유지하면서, 현재 매크로블록의 검색영역을 줄이는 것이 가능하다. 제안하는 알고리즘의 성능은 Full Search Block Matching Algorithm(FSBMA) 및 UMHexagonS 알고리즘의 integer pel 에 대한 SAD(Sum of Absolute Difference) 연산횟수로 비교평가 하였다. 그 결과, FSBMA 에 비하여 평균 97.64%, UMHexagonS 에 비하여는 평균 17.48%의 연산횟수를 감소시키는 우수함을 보였다.

Fast Codebook Search for Vector Quantization in Image Coding (영상 부호화를 위한 벡터 양자화기에서의 고속 탐색 기법)

  • The paper describes a very simple algorithm for reducing the encoding complexity of vector quantization(VQ), exploiting the feature of a vector currently being encoded. A proposed VQ of 16(=4x4) vector dimension shows a slight performance degradation of about 0.1-1.9dB, however, with only 16-32 among 256 codeword searches, i.e., with just 1/16-1/8 search complexity compared to a full-search VQ. And the proposed VQ scheme is also compared to outperform tree-search VQ with regard to their SNR performance and memory requirement.

  • Fast search and conventional boolean matching motion estimation algorithms reduce computational complexity and data processing time but this algorithms have disadvantages that is difficult of implementation of hardware because of high control overhead and that is less performance than Full search Algorithm(FA). This paper present new all binary block matching algorithm, called Bit Converted All Binary Block Matching(BC-ABBM). Proposed algorithm have performance closed to the FA by boolean only block matching that may be very efficiently implemented in hardware for low bit rate video communication. Simulation results show that the PSNR of the proposed algorithm is about 0.04dB loss than FA but is about 0.6 ∼ 1.4dB gain than fast search algorithm and conventional boolean matching algorithm.

  • Vector quantization(VQ) is widely used in many high-quality and high-rate data compression applications such as speech coding, audio coding, image coding and video coding. When the size of a VQ codebook is large, the computational complexity for the full codeword search method is a significant problem for many applications. A number of complexity reduction algorithms have been proposed and investigated using such properties of the codebook as the triangle inequality. This paper proposes a new fast VQ search algorithm that is based on a multi-stage structure for searching for the best codeword. Even using only two stages, a significant complexity reduction can be obtained without any loss of quality.

Fast Inter Mode Decision Algorithm Based on Macroblock Tracking in H.264/AVC Video

  • We propose a fast macroblock (MB) mode prediction and decision algorithm based on temporal correlation for P-slices in the H.264/AVC video standard. There are eight block types for temporal decorrelation, including SKIP mode based on rate-distortion (RD) optimization. This scheme gives rise to exhaustive computations (search) in the coding procedure. To overcome this problem, a thresholding method for fast inter mode decision using a MB tracking scheme to find the most correlated block and RD cost of the correlated block is suggested for early stop of the inter mode determination. We propose a two-step inter mode candidate selection method using statistical analysis. In the first step, a mode is selected based on the mode information of the co-located MB from the previous frame. Then, an adaptive thresholding scheme is applied using the RD cost of the most correlated MB. Secondly, additional candidate modes are considered to determine the best mode of the initial candidate modes that does not satisfy the designed thresholding rule. Comparative analysis shows that a speed-up factor of up to 70.59% is obtained when compared with the full mode search method with a negligible bit increment and a minimal loss of image quality.

Development of an Edge-based Point Correlation Algorithm Avoiding Full Point Search in Visual Inspection System (전탐색 회피에 의한 고속 에지기반 점 상관 알고리즘의 개발)

  • For visual inspection system in real industrial environment, it is one of most important tasks to design fast and stable pattern matching algorithm. This paper presents an edge-based point correlation algorithm avoiding full search in visual inspection system. Conventional algorithms based on NGC(normalized gray-level correlation) have to overcome some difficulties for applying to automated inspection system in factory environment. First of all, NGC algorithms need high time complexity and thus high performance hardware to satisfy real-time process. In addition, lighting condition in realistic factory environments if not stable and therefore intensity variation from uncontrolled lights gives many roubles for applying directly NGC as pattern matching algorithm in this paper, we propose an algorithm to solve these problems from using thinned and binarized edge data and skipping full point search with edge-map analysis. A point correlation algorithm with the thinned edges is introduced with image pyramid technique to reduce the time complexity. Matching edges instead of using original gray-level pixel data overcomes NGC problems and pyramid of edges also provides fast and stable processing. All proposed methods are preyed from experiments using real images.

Motion Estimation in Video Coding using Search Candidate Point on Region by Binary-Tree Structure (이진트리 구조에 따른 구간별 탐색 후보점을 이용한 비디오 코딩의 움직임 추정)

  • In this paper, we propose a new fast block matching algorithm for block matching using the temporal and spatially correlation of the video sequence and local statistics of neighboring motion vectors. Since the temporal correlation of the video sequence between the motion vector of current block and the motion vector of previous block. The proposed algorithm determines the location of a better starting point for the search of an exact motion vector using the point of the smallest SAD(sum of absolute difference) value by the predicted motion vectors of neighboring blocks around the same block of the previous frame and the current frame and the predictor candidate point on each division region by binary-tree structure. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has the capability to dramatically reduce the search points and computing cost for motion estimation, comparing to fast FS(full search) motion estimation and other fast motion estimation.

Fast Variable-size Block Matching Algorithm for Motion Estimation Based on Bit-patterns (비트패턴 기반 움직임 추정을 위한 고속의 가변 블록 정합 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, we propose a fast variable block matching algorithm for motion estimation based on bit-patterns. Motion estimation in the proposed algorithm is peformed after the representation of image sequence is transformed 8-bit pixel values into 1-bit ones by the mean pixel value of search block, which brings a short searching time by reducing the computational complexity. Moreover, adaptive searching methods according to the motion information of the block make the procedure of motion estimation efficient by eliminating unnecessary searching processes of low motion block and deepening a searching procedure in high motion block. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm provides bettor performance - average 0.5dB PSNR improvement and about 99% savings in the number of operations - than full search Hock matching algorithm with a fixed block size.

  • So many fast motion estimation algorithms for prediction quality and computational reduction have been published due to tremendous computations of full search algorithm. In the paper, we suggest an algorithm that reduces computation effectively, while keeping prediction quality as almost same as that of the full search. The proposed algorithm based on multiple threshold filter calculates the sum of partial block matching error for each candidate, selects the candidates for the next step, compares the stability of optimal candidates with minimum error, removes impossible candidates, and calculates optimal motion vectors by determining the progress of the next step. By doing that, we can find the minimum error point as soon as possible and obtain the better performance of calculation speed by reducing unnecessary computations. The proposed algorithm can be combined with conventional fast motion estimation algorithms as well as by itself, further reduce computation while keeping the prediction quality as almost same as the algorithms, and prove it in the experimental results.
