A Fast Algorithm for Target Detection in High Spatial Resolution Imagery

  • Detection and identification of targets from remotely sensed imagery are of great interest for civilian and military application. This paper presents an algorithm for target detection in high spatial resolution imagery based on the spectral and the dimensional characteristics of the reference target. In this algorithm, the spectral and the dimensional information of the reference target is extracted automatically from the sample image of the reference target. Then in the entire image, the candidate target pixels are extracted based on the spectral characteristics of the reference target. Finally, groups of candidate pixels which form isolated spatial objects of similar size to that of the reference target are extracted as detected targets. The experimental test results showed that even though the algorithm detected spatial objects which has different shape as targets if the spectral and the dimensional characteristics are similar to that of the reference target, it could detect 97.5% of the targets in the image. Using hyperspectral image and utilizing the shape information are expected to increase the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • This paper presents a novel method to speed up neural network (NN) based face detection systems. NN-based face detection can be viewed as a classification and search problem. The proposed method formulates the search problem as an integer nonlinear optimization problem (INLP) and develops an improved genetic algorithm (IGA) to solve it. Each individual in the IGA represents a subwindow in an input image. The subwindows are evaluated by how well they match a NN-based face filter. A face is indicated when the filter response of the best particle is above a given threshold. Experimental results show that the proposed method leads to a speedup of 83 on $320{\times}240$ images compared to the traditional exhaustive search method.

  • In this paper, a real-time eye tracking method using fast face detection is proposed. Most of the current eye tracking systems have operational limitations due to sensors, complicated backgrounds, and uneven lighting condition. It also suffers from slow response time which is not proper for a real-time application. The tracking performance is low under complicated background and uneven lighting condition. The proposed algorithm detects face region from acquired image using elliptic Hough transform followed by eye detection within the detected face region using Haar-like features. In order to reduce the computation time in tracking eyes, the algorithm predicts next frame search region from the information obtained in the current frame. Experiments through simulation show good performance of the proposed method under various environments.

  • A new chemosensor based on a self-assembled system has been devised to detect Hg2+ions efficiently. We demonstrated that the amphiphilic building blocks consisting of pyrene and boronic acid (1) aggregate in aqueous solutions and provide an outstanding sensing platform for sensitive detection. The self-assembled 1 exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity for Hg2+ion detection via fluorescence quenching, where the Hg2+ion detection ensued from a fast transmetallation of 1. The Stern-Volmer (SV) quenching constant for its fluorescence quenching by Hg2+ions was approximately 1.58 × 108 M-1. In addition, self-assembled 1 exhibited excellent sensing abilities at nano-molar concentration levels when tap water and freshwater samples were contaminated with of Hg2+ ions.

  • In this paper, an efficient FFT-based fault detection algorithm is proposed. In our proposed method, fault detection is accomplished by process similar to the conventional FFT-based fault detection. However, the proposed technique adopts fast algorithms for preprocessing, where the conventional operation such as averaging is replaced with recursive average operation that outperforms the former in computational cost.   • Human detection technologies are widely used in smart homes and autonomous vehicles. However, in order to detect human, autonomous vehicle researchers have used a high-resolution LIDAR and smart home researchers have applied a camera with a narrow detection range. In this paper, we propose a novel method using a low-cost and low-resolution LIDAR that can detect human fast and precisely without complex learning algorithm and additional devices. In other words, human can be distinguished from objects by using a new human characteristics function which is empirically extracted from the characteristics of a human. In addition, we verified the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm through a number of experiments.

  • A analog disturbance observer, which is suitable for servo motor drive, was employed to suppressi control of the impact drop disturbance. The main advantage of the observer is that a fast response disturbance estimation is obtained using the detected motor cuttent and speed. And the new M/T method for motor speed detection is proposed. The method should be able to reduce the detection dead time compared with the Ohmae's M/T method. Also, the low speed control of a servo motor using instantaneous speed detection method is described. To estimate the instantaneous speed from the average speed, the speed estimator of the first order is proposed. Actually we confirmed that these methods improve the speed control performance of the servo system with experiments.

  • We studied the detection of the Hg(II) concentration in an aqueous solution using rhodamine dyes on citrate-reduced Au nanoparticles (NPs). The quenching effect from Au NPs was found to decrease as the Hg(II) concentration increased under our experimental conditions. As the fluorescence signals intensified, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) intensities reduced on the contrary due to less rhodamine dyes on Au NPs as the Hg(II) concentration increased. The rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) and rhodamine 123 (Rh123) dyes were examined via fluorescence and SERS measurements depending on Hg(II) concentrations. Fast and easy fluorescence detection of an Hg (II) concentration as low as a few ppm could be achieved by naked eye using citrate-reduced Au NPs.

  • A new design of contact detection algorithm is proposed for the z-axis of a wire bonder that interconnects between pads and leads in semiconductor manufacturing processes. Fast and stable contact detection of the z-axis is extremely important fer maintaining proper quality in the fine pitch gold wire bonding process, which has a small pad size of below 70um. The new method is based on a statistical approach and designed for the discrete Kalman filter. Real wire bonding experimental results are presented to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed algorithm.

Object Detection by Gaussian Mixture Model and Shape Adaptive Bidirectional Block Matching Algorithm

  • We proposed a method to improve moving object detection capability of Gaussian Mixture Model by suggesting shape adaptive bidirectional block matching algorithm. This method achieves more accurate detection and tracking performance at various motion types such as slow, fast, and bimodal motions than that of Gaussian Mixture Model. Experimental results showed that the proposed method outperformed the conventional methods.
