  • By modeling the block matching algorithm as a function of the correlation of image blocks, we derive search patterns for fast block matching motion estimation. The proposed approach provides an analytical support lot the diamond-shape search pattern, which is widely used in fast block matching algorithms. We also propose a new fast motion estimation algorithm using adaptive search patterns and statistical properties of the object displacement. In order to select an appropriate search pattern, we exploit the relationship between the motion vector and the block differences. By changing the search pattern adaptively, we improve motion prediction accuracy while reducing required computational complexity compared to other fast block matching algorithms.

  • Motion estimation plays an important role for video coding. In this paper, we derive optimal search patterns for fast block matching motion estimation. By analyzing the block matching algorithm as a function of block shape and size, we can find an optimal search pattern for initial motion estimation. The proposed idea, which has been verified experimentally by computer simulations, can provide an analytical basis for the current MPEG-2 proposals. In order to choose a more compact search pattern for BMA, we exploit the statistical relationship between the motion and the frame difference of each block.

  • Due to the significant computation of full search in motion estimation, extensive research in fast motion estimation algorithms has been carried out. However, most of the algorithms have the degradation in predicted images compared with the full search algorithm. To reduce an amount of significant computation while keeping the same prediction quality of the full search, we propose a fast block-matching algorithm based on gradient magnitude of reference block without any degradation of predicted image. By using Taylor series expansion, we show that the block matching errors between reference block and candidate block are proportional to the gradient magnitude of matching block. With the derived result, we propose fast full search algorithm with adaptively determined scan direction in the block matching. Experimentally, our proposed algorithm is very efficient in terms of computational speedup and has the smallest computation among all the conventional full search algorithms. Therefore, our algorithm is useful in VLSI implementation of video encoder requiring real-time application.

  • In this paper, a Fast Block Sum Pyramid Algorithm (FBSPA) is presented for motion estimation in video coding. PBSPA is based on Block Sum Pyramid Algorithm(BSPA), Efficient Multilevel Successive Elimination Algorithms for Block Matching Motion Estimation, and Fast Algorithms for the Estimation of Motion Vectors. FBSPA reduces the computations for motion estimation of BSPA 29% maximally using partial distortion elimination(PDE) scheme.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast adaptive diamond search algorithm(FADS) for block matching motion estimation. Fast motion estimation algorithms reduce the computational complexity by using the UESA (Unimodal Error Search Assumption) that the matching error monotonically increases as the search moves away from the global minimum error. Recently many fast BMAs(Block Matching Algorithms) make use of the fact that the global minimum points in real world video sequences are centered at the position of zero motion. But these BMAs, especially in large motion, are easily trapped into the local minima and result in poor matching accuracy. So, we propose a new motion estimation algorithm using the spatial correlation among the adjacent blocks. We change the origin of search window according to the spatially adjacent motion vectors and their MAE(Mean Absolute Error). The computer simulation shows that the proposed algorithm has almost the same computational complexity with UCBDS(Unrestricted Center-Biased Diamond Search)〔1〕, but enhance PSNR. Moreover, the proposed algorithm gives almost the same PSNR as that of FS(Full Search), even for the large motion case, with half the computational load.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast variable-size block matching algorithm for motion estimation based on bit-pattern. Motion estimation in the proposed algorithm is performed after the representation of image sequence is transformed 8bit pixel values into 1bit ones depending on the mean value of search block, which brings a short searching time by reducing the computational complexity. Moreover, adaptive searching methods according to the motion information of the block make the procedure of motion estimation efficient by eliminating an unnecessary searching of low motion block and deepening a searching procedure in high motion block. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm provides better performance-0.5dB PSNR improvement-than full search block matching algorithm with a fixed block size.

  • A method that is adaptively selecting among previous fast motion estimation algorithms and a newly proposed fast motion estimation algorithm(UCDS) is presented in this paper. The algorithm named AUDC and a newly proposed fast motion estimation algorithms are based on the Diamond Search(DS) algorithm and Three Step Search(TSS). Although many previous fast motion estimation algorithms have lots of advantages, those have lots of disadvantages. So we thought better adaptive selection of fast motion estimation algorithms than only using one fast motion estimation algorithm. Therefore, we propose AUDC that is using length of the MV, Search Point, SAD of the neighboring block and adaptively selecting among Cross Three Step Search(CTSS), Diamond Search(DS) and Ungraded Cross Diamond Search(UCDS). Experimental results show that the AUDC is much more robust, provides a faster searching speed, and smaller distortions than other popular fast block-matching at algorithms.

  • This paper introduces a new fast motion estimation based on estimating a block matching error (i.e., sum of absolute difference (SAD)) between blocks which can eliminate an impossible candidate block much earlier than a conventional partial distortion elimination (PDE) scheme. The basic idea of the proposed scheme is based on predicting the total SAD of a candidate block using its partial SAD. In particular, in order to improve prediction accuracy and computational efficiency, a sub-sample based block matching and a selective pixel-based approaches are employed. In order to evaluate the proposed scheme, several baseline approaches are described and compared. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the computations by about 44% for motion estimation at the cost of 0.0005 dB quality degradation versus the general PDE algorithm.

  • In this paper, we present a fast block matching motion estimation algorithm based on successive elimination algorithm (SEA). Based on the characteristic of center-biased motion vector distribution in the search area, the proposed method improves the performance of the SEA with a reduced the number of the search positions in the search area, In addition, to reduce the computational load, this method is combined with both the reduced bits mean absolute difference (RBMAD) matching criterion which can be reduced the computation complexity of pixel comparison in the block matching and pixel decimation technique which reduce the number of pixels used in block matching. Simulation results show that the proposed method provides better performance than existing fast algorithms and similar to full-search block motion estimation algorithm.
