This study evaluated the economic feasibility of facility farms according to the introduction of the ultra-high density pot cultivation (UHDPC) for mango. The basic model was selected as a representative farmhouse case in the Jeonnam region, and seven scenarios for conventional crops were tested. The economic feasibility of crop switching was analyzed through partial budget analysis (PBA). The PBA analysis results were supplemented by adding a sensitivity analysis and a break-even point (BEP) analysis. As a result of the analyses, it was found that crop conversion was economical because the increase in the profit coefficient was greater than the increase in the loss coefficient due to the introduction of mango for all conventional crops. The economics of introducing mango was more sensitive to changes in gross income than to changes in cost items. The results show the detailed conditions of crop selection according to the conditions and preferences of individual farms by presenting the direction of increase and decrease by budget item and information on the amount of increase or decrease. In particular, the BEP analysis result, which is about half of the farms case, is significant in that it presents the minimum target value according to production and market risks.
The concentrations of trace metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Zn) were determined in 49 surface sediment samples collected in Yeoja and Gangjin Bays on the south coast of Korea, which contain many shellfish farms, in order to assess the contamination level and to understand the spatial distribution of trace metals. The average metal concentrations in the surface sediments of both bays decreased in the order Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr > Pb > Cu > As > Cd > Hg. There were no differences in metal concentrations between shellfish farms and reference sites. The metal concentrations were significantly higher in Gangjin Bay than in Yeoja Bay. Notably, the Cu, Cd, and Hg concentrations were nearly twice as high in Gangjin Bay as in Yeoja Bay. A multivariate analysis showed a strong correlation among Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, and Cr in the sediments of both bays, implying that the metal concentrations in the sediments in the study area were mainly dependent on natural processes, such as crustal components and diagenesis. Based on the geoaccumulation index and marine sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), the surface sediments in Yeoja and Gangjin Bays are not polluted by trace metals.
Reproductive cycle, the condition index, sex ratio of the Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas were investigated by histological and morphometric data. The specimens were collected in the two oyster farms of Geoje and Namhae, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea, from November 1995 to October 1996. Growth of shell length in two regions was similar, but growth of total weight of the oyster in Namhae was faster than that in Geoje oyster farm. The spawning periods in female and male clams were from July to October in Geoje and from June to October in Namhae oyster farm. Ripe oocytes were approximately 50 m in diameter. The reproductive cycle of in females and males in Geoje and Namhae oyster farms can be divided into five successive stages: early developing, late developing, ripe, partially spawned and spent/inactive. Monthly changes in gonad developmental phases showed somewhat different patterns between female and male clams except for the spawning period. On the whole, however, monthly changes in the gonad developmental phases showed a similar pattern in the same sex. The sex ratios of females to males in Geoje and Namhae oyster farms were not significantly different from a 1:1 sex ratio ($x^2$ = 0.55 (p > 0.05) in Geoje and $x^2$ = 0.27 ( p > 0.05) in Namhae). Artificial induction of maturation by heating of adult oysters (two-year-old) was investigated from 17 January to 18 March in 1996. Maturity at the fixed water temperature group of $20^{\circ}C$ was 80%, it showed the highest maturity of experimental groups cultured for five weeks. The survival (%) of Crassostrea gigas in the raised water temperature experimental groups (15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$) were over 98.5%, as similar to the control group (100%). But, the survival of C. gigas in the fixed water temperature experimental groups (15, 20, 25, $30^{\circ}C$) were decreased with the increase of the water temperatures. In the fixed water temperature experimental group of $30^{\circ}C$, the survival was 51.1%. Base on these results, the fixed water temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ was the best condition for artificial induction of sexual maturation.

This study assessed microbiological hazards at postharvest stage of dropwort farms (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I) located in 4 different areas in Korea. The samples were assessed for sanitary indication bacteria (total aerobic bacteria, coliform, and Escherichia coli) and pathogenic bacteria (Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus). Total aerobic bacteria and coliform in 9 dropwort farms were detected at the levels of 0~7.00 and 0~4.25 log CFU/g, mL, of $100cm^2$. In particular, microbial contamination in worker's hand showed higher than cultivation environment factors. Escherichia coli was detected in several farms of soil, irrigation water, washing water and worker's hand and also, dropwort in these farms was contaminated with E. coli (positive reaction). In case of pathogenic bacteria, B. cereus was detected at the highest levels in soil. S. aureus was detected qualitatively from only one sample of dropwort washed by water. E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes were not detected. Although dropwort pass through 2 process (trimming and washing), the microbial contamination was not differ significantly before and after which indicates that current washing system was not effect on reduction of microorganism. From these results, the postharvest environment and workers have been considered as cross-contamination factors. Thus, processing equipments and personal hygiene should be managed to reduce the microbial contamination of dropwort. Accordingly management system such as good agricultural practices (GAP) criteria is needed for the safety of dropwort
The purpose of this study was to isolate Escherichia coli from flies and to assess pathogenic genes and antibiotic resistance of the isolates. A total of 188 flies were captured in agricultural environment including fruits farms (n = 19), fermented soybean farms (n = 9), municipal waste (n = 46), livestock farms (n = 66), slaughterhouses (n = 38), and manure ground (n = 10). E. coli isolates of captured flies were tested for pathogenic gene and antibiotic resistance using PCR methods and VITEK2 systems. As a result, E. coli from 63% (119/188) of the captured flies has been detected, and the detection rate of E. coli was the highest (89%, 31/34) in flies captured at particular slaughterhouse. Of the 34 isolates, 94% (32/34) were pathogenic gene (ST gene) positive. Twenty-six percent (31/119) of the E. coli isolates were observed being resistant to one or more antibiotics. Markedly, one of E. coli isolates from Livestock farms was resistant to 7 antibiotics including ampicillin, ampicillin/sulbactam, cefazolin, cefotaxime, gentamicin, levofloxacin, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. In addition, it was ESBL positive. The results of the present study may suggest a risk of transmission of pathogenic and antimicrobial resistant bacteria from flies to livestock environment Therefore, it may need to prevent introducing flies into the agricultural production environment for safe food production.
Data from a village household dairy survey was compared with technical parameters of three model farms (0.2, 0.4 and 0.8 ha in extent) established by the Mid-country Livestock Development Centre (MLDC). In terms of land size, about 67% of the 250 dairy farmers interviewed corresponded with the MLDC models, but only 33% of the farmers were keeping dairy cattle under conditions comparable to the MLDC models (no regular off-farm income). In the 0.2 ha category, village farmers kept more cows, and in the other two categories the village farmers kept less cows than their MLDC model counterparts. In all three categories, the milk production per cow was higher in the model farms (1540 to 2137 vs. 1464 to 1508 litres/cow/year), and this could be attributed to higher feeding levels of concentrates in the model farms as compared to the village farmers (430 to 761 vs. 233 to 383 kg/cow/year). The amount of milk produced from fodder was higher in the village situation in comparison to the models. In the mid country, dairy production seems to depend on access to fodder resources rather than on the extent of land owned. Except in the 0.8 ha village category, the highest contribution to the total income was made by the dairy component (44 to 60%). With 0.8 ha village farmers, the income contribution from dairy and crops was similar (41%). Income from other livestock was important for the 0.2 ha MLDC model, but for all other categories their contribution to total income ranged from 0 to 10%. Access to fodder resources outside own-farm land is vital for economic dairy production. As such, an in-depth analysis of feed resources available and their accessibility needs to be further investigated.

Agriculture has the longest history in many industries and is directly or indirectly linked to human development. However, recently agriculture in Korea has difficulties in farm management due to the decrease of rural population, aging of society, increase of material costs, and climate change on the Korean peninsula. Smart farms using ICT are proposed as an alternative to solve these problems. Smart farms manage the temperature and water supply facilities of farms through various sensors, but there is a limit to the delicate management of crops. Therefore, in this paper, unlike the conventional moisture sensor, the water supply is varied according to the depth of the soil, thereby realizing an optimized environment for plant growth.
This study investigated the free sugar and free amino acids considered as the taste component in Korean Gochujang. Our goal was to search and develop the Korean traditional Gochujang taste, and to monitor the current status and characteristics of the Gochujang. For the analysis of Gochujang, it is purchased from small farms as well as major food company producing Gochujang. In the case of commercial Gochujang(COM), glucose and maltose were major free sugar, and the ratio of distribution and total amount showed very similar pattern. However, the results of the traditional Gochujang(TG) showed significant differences for each sample even they had glucose and maltose as predominant sugar. The content of glucose, maltose, fructose was reduced in order. The other hand, sucrose, rhamnose were not detected or were detected trace amounts in some samples. Even the characteristics were found at each region, it was no noticeable difference, but each sample was greater variation. Total of 17 amino acids were found from COM and the major amino acids were Pro, Glu, Asp, but His, Met were generally detected in small amounts. In the TG, they mainly contained Glu, Asp, Pro as the dominant component in addition to the Arg, Ala, Cys, respectively. TG had higher amino acid content and fairly various distribution compared to COM. It could suggest the possibility of the development for different traditional tastes because each TG had diverse characteristic taste than COM.

Vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) have emerged as an important nosocomial pathogen. Since 1989 the Center for Disease Control, United States, has reported a rapid increase in the incidence of enterococcal bacteremia and endocarditis infection by VRE. It was suggested that the use of avoparcin was associated with the appearance of VRE in animal husbandry. To date, several detection methods have been used based on conventional methods of culture and gene detection. However, these methods have some limitations such as time-consuming, laborious and additional differential needs. Therefore, In this study a multiplex PCR method was established to detect and differentiate resistance types of enterococci which specifically amplify the four van genes encoding vancomycin resistance elements. Using the method, we investigated the incidence rates and types of VRE from farms using or not using avoparcin. A total of 1091 animal fecal samples were collected from 70 pig and 32 poultry farms. A total of 425 of enterococci were isolated from samples. Of the 425 isolates, 11 of the them showed a pattern of high-level vancomycin resistance (MIC : $64{\sim}256{\mu}g/ml$) which was associated with the presence of the vanA or vanB gene. Fifty-seven isolates showed a pattern of low-level vancomycin resistance (MIC : $3{\sim}8{\mu}g/ml$) associated with the vanC-1 or vanC-2 gene. Interestingly, all isolates with high-level vancomycin resistance were from farms that have never used avoparcin. Moreover, the high-level VRE isolation rate in Korea (2.58%) was much lower than that of other countries (50% in England, 7% in Belgium) where avoparcin have been used. In conclusion, the multiplex PCR method established in this study could be applied for detection of VRE.

This paper proposes a probabilistic generation assessment model of renewable energy generators(REGs) considering uncertainty of resources, mainly focused on Wind Turbine Generator(WTG) and Solar Cell Generator(SCG) which are dispersed widely in South Korea The proposed numerical analysis method assesses the one day-ahead generation by combining equivalent generation characteristics function and probabilistic distribution function of wind speed(WS) and solar radiation(SR) resources. The equivalent generation functions(EGFs) of the wind and solar farms are established by grouping a lot of the farms appropriately centered on Weather Measurement Station(WMS). First, the EGFs are assessed by using regression analysis method based on typical least square method from the recorded actual generation data and historical resources(WS and SR). Second, the generation of the REGs is assessed by adding the one day-ahead resources forecast, announced by WMS, to the EGFs which are formulated as third order degree polynomials using the regression analysis. Third, a Renewable Energy Generation Assessment System(REGAS) including D/B of recorded actual generation data and historical resources is developed using the model and algorithm predicting one day-ahead power output of renewable energy generators.
