  • Optimal duct design of a HVAC system requires analysis technology to accurately evaluate its pressure losses, flow rate and velocity for making a compromised design among fan capacity and duct size affecting initial manufacturing and operation costs, and noise induced by the HVAC system. In this paper, we carry out initial duct design using the equal friction method. Using the result, the T-method is applied for accurate analysis of flow rate. Then, the duct size is modified using the difference between the required and the calculated flow rate, which can guarantee required flow rate, reduce the pressure unbalance among duct paths and lead to select optimal fan performance. To verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed design method, an example for HVAC system design including noise analysis is demonstrated.

  • Numerical predictions of aerodynamic noise radiated by subsonic rotors are carried out. A time domain approach for Ffowcs-Williams Hawkings equation of acoustic analogy is used in developing a comprehensive rotor/fan noise prediction program to handle both arbitrary blade shapes and loading conditions. Since only the aeroacoustic aspects of rotors are considered here, the calculations are carried out for rotors with simple aerodynamic characteristics. Broadband noise from ingestion of turbulence is also considered. By incorporating discrete frequency noise prediction of steady loading with broadband spectrum, much better correlation at the low frequency region with experimental data is obtaind. The contributions from different noise mechanisms can also be analysed through this method.

  • The 3-stage centrifugal compressor is used in order to measure the noise spectra of compressor, and analyze the results. Two cases are investigated for compressor noise components. Case I includes total system such as compressor, inter-cooler, motor, and Case II excludes cooling system. BPF tonal noise is important in compressor, and cooling system including inter-cooler contributes to broadband noise. Also, motor, gear box, and motor cooling fan are the second contributions to total compressor noise. Centrifugal compressor flow-field is calculated using two-dimensional grid and Navier-Stokes equations. Static pressure increases, and total pressure decreases, as air passes through the compressor components.

  • The acoustic signatures from a propeller fan under non-uniform inlet flow conditions were measured to reveal the mechanism for tonal radiation. Experimental studies were carried out by generating non-uniform turbulent flows with circumferential and radial components of harmonic incoming gust deliberately. This paper reports the measured acoustic power exponents and cross-spectra for circumferential and radial disturbances at a specified flow-rate coefficient.

  • The 2-dimensional unsteady flows on and around the cambered airfoils were computed by applying LES with the deductive dynamic SGS model. The unsteady flow field were used as inputs to compute the far-field sounds and directivity patterns from rotating blades by a hybrid approach that exploits Farassat's formula. The BEM (Boundary Element Method) was applied to predict the frequency characteristics from the rotating blades for the cases of even- and uneven-pitched fans. The BEM results suggested that the unevenly pitched fan have less pronounced discrete peaks at BEF frequencies, which was confirmed by the experiment.

  • This paper deals with the structural vibration characteristics for an outdoor units support of an air-conditioner. Even though main noise sources are compressor noise and fluid noise which is caused by the fan, the structural modification of the outdoor units support may affect vibration and noise. In this paper, damping ratios for two kinds of an outdoor units support of an air-conditioner are measured through the modal testing. In order to reduce the structural borne noise due to an outdoor units support of an air-conditioner, four kinds of rubber materials are selected and tested.

  • In order to optimize the rotating angle of the auto louver, the air-cleaner with turbo fan was numerical and experimentally analyzed . The noise generated from the auto louver was changed by modifying the installation angle of the louver. Flow field and flow noise were analyzed numerically by commercial tool SC/Tetra and FlowNoise S/W. Experiment was also done at anechoic chamber. From the numerical and experimental data, we can find the optimal rotating angle for auto louver of the air-cleaner.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the noise level and source, reduce the subway line II noise. As a result of measurement of subway line II in Busan the highest value section of uproad line was from Jigegol to Motgol by 89 dB(A). The sections of conversation and listening interference(over 80 dB(A)) were 21 sections(55%) of 38 sections. Among these sections, 15 sections(71%) were produced rolling noise, 3 sections(14%) squeal noise, 2 sections(10%) braking noise and 1 section(5%) fan noise, and then a main noise source was the rolling noise. In case of downroad line, the highest value section was from Busan Metro Art Museum to Centum city, Motgol to Jigegol by 88 dB(A). The sections of conversation and listening interference(over 80 dB(A)) were 18 sections(47%) of 38 sections. Among these sections, 15 sections(83%) produced rolling noise, 2 sections(11%) squeal noise and 1 section(6%) braking noise were investigated in this study. and then a main noise source was the rolling noise.

  • A cross-flow fan is generally used on the region within the low static pressure difference and the high flow rate. It relatively makes high dynamic pressure at low rotating speed because a working fluid passes through an impeller blade twice and blades have a forward curved shape. At off-design points, there are a rapid pressure head reduction, a noise increase and an unsteady flow. Those phenomena are remarkably influenced by the setting angle of a stabilizer. Therefore, it should be considered how the setting angle of a stabilizer affects on the performance and the flow fields of a cross-flow fan. It is also required to investigate the effect of the volumetric flow rate before occurring stall. Two-dimensional, unsteady governing equations are solved using a commercial code, STAR-CD, which uses FVM. PISO algorithm, sliding grid system and standard k - ε turbulence model are also adopted. Pressure and velocity profiles with various setting angles are graphically depicted. Furthermore, the meridional velocity profiles around the impeller are plotted with different flow rates for a given rotating speed.

  • This paper is development of single-phase brushless DC motor with outer rotor for ventilation fan. Cogging torque causes the noise vibration to greatest impact on ventilation fan. Asymmetric notches are applied to tapered-teeth for cogging torque reduction of single-phase brushless DC motor. Initial model is notchless and proposed model is applied 2 asymmetric notches. The proposed method is proved motor characteristic through finite element analysis(FEA). Also, experimental results verify that the proposed model considerably reduces cogging torque and have the good sound quality in ventilation system.
