An Experimental Study on the Noise Reduction of Cooling Fans for Four-ton Forklift Machines (4톤급 지게차 냉각홴 소음 저감에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This paper presents research on methods for the reduction of forklifts' noise level for the increased comfort and safety of its operator. A cooling fan with a high air volume flow rate installed in the forklift acts as an important design parameter which efficiently cools the heat exchanger system, helping to transfer internal heat from the engine room to the outdoors with both transmitted and diffracted opening noises. The cooling fan contributes significantly to both the forklift's emitted sound power and the operator room's noise level, thereby necessitating research on the forklift's reduction of acoustic power level and transmission. A noise analysis for various fan models with a biomimetic design based on eagle-wing geometry was conducted. In addition to the acoustic power generation, the aerodynamic performance of the cooling blade is also strongly influenced by the design of airfoil distribution, thereby requiring optimization. The cooling fans were fabricated and installed in the forklift in order to check the efficacy of the forklift engine's cooling, and the final version of the fan was measured for its ability to lower acoustic power level and cool the engine room. This study explains the aerodynamic and acoustic features of the designed fans with the use of BEM analysis and forklift test results.

Optimization of Fan-Shaped Hole for Gas Turbine Blade on Thin Wall (가스터빈 블레이드의 얇은 벽에서의 팬 형상 홀 최적화)

  • Several cooling techinques have been studied for protecting gas turbine blades from hot gas. In terms of film-cooling techniques, various shapes of film cooling holes have been studied including fan shaped holes, which are used on gas turbine blades. However, owing to increasing demands on smaller gas turbines, a research on film-cooling holes on thin walls is required. This study was conducted at blowing ratios of 1 and 2, using numerical analysis. Through the numerical analysis, the effect of geometrical parameters on the effectiveness of fan-shaped hole film cooling was studied. Moreover, optimization was performed on three geometrical parameters: metering length, lateral expansion angle and forward expansion angle. As a result, we realized that the optimal fan-shaped holes on each blowing ratio were found to have very similar geometry and cooling performance.

  • In this study, the performance of an impeller according to blade length and pitch angle was studied experimentally by building a variable pitch impeller while changing blade length to review the effect of blade length and pitch angle on a fan's performance. The pitch angle was changed in six steps from $20^{\circ}{\sim}45^{\circ}$ at intervals of $5^{\circ}$ while the blade lengths were changed to 90 mm, 100 mm, 110 mm and 120 mm with an identical airfoil shape while carrying out the experiment. The results are summarized as follows : The air flow per static pressure of axial fans increased linearly with increase of pitch angle, but the high static pressure showed a decrease at a pitch angle of $35^{\circ}$. The shaft power increased proportionally to the pitch angle at all blade lengths; the larger the pitch angle, the larger the measured increase of shaft power.   • The goal of this study is to improve flow and noise performances of existing backward-curved blade centrifugal fan system used for circulating cold air in a refrigerator freezer by optimally designing airfoil shape. The unique characteristics of the system is to drive cold airflow with two volute tongues in combination with duct system in a back side of a refrigerator without scroll housing generally used in a typical centrifugal fan system. First, flow and noise performances of existing fan system were evaluated experimentally. A P-Q curve was obtained using a fan performance tester in the flow experiment, and noise spectrum was measured in an anechoic chamber in the noise experiment. Then, flow characteristics were numerically analyzed by solving the three-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes equations and noise analysis was performed by solving the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkins equation with input from the flow simulation results. The validity of numerical results was confirmed by comparing them with the measured ones. Based on the verified numerical method, blade inlet and outlet angles were optimized for maximum flow rate using the two-factor central composite design of the response surface method. Finally, the flow and noise performances of a prototype manufactured with the optimum design were experimentally evaluated, which showed the improvement in flow and noise performance.

Characteristics of Flow-Induced Noise in the Suction Nozzle of a Vacuum Cleaner with a Double-Blade Fan (이중 블레이드 팬이 장착된 진공청소기 브러쉬의 유동소음 특성)

  • The characteristics of noise generation in the suction nozzle of a vacuum cleaner are analyzed numerically and experimentally. First, the flow resistance induced by each element in the suction nozzle of a vacuum cleaner with a double-blade rotary fan is investigated numerically and its relation with flow-induced noise and suction performance is examined in an anechoic room. The flow resistance and vorticity in the suction nozzle are calculated, and it is found that they are closely related to flow-induced noise and that the upper limit of noise reduction is only 4 dBA. This upper limit can be achieved by changing the design of the brush nozzle. Two methods for noise reduction by enlargement of flow-inlet area and by optimization of the number of blades are tested. Finally, the effects of each method are verified experimentally.

Design and Prediction of Three Dimensional Flows in a Low Speed Highly Loaded Axial Flow Fan

  • This paper describes the design to increase the blade loading factor of a low speed axial flow fan from normal 0.42 to highly loaded 0.55. A three-dimensional viscous solver is used to model the flows in the highly-loaded and normal loaded stages over its operation range. At the design point operation the static pressure rise can be increased by 20 percent with a deficit of efficiency by 0.3 percent. In the highly loaded fan stage, the rotor hub flow stalls, and separation vortex extends over the rotor hub region. The backflow, which occurs along the stator hub-suction surface, changes the exit flow from the prescribed axial direction. Results in this paper confirm that the limitation of the two dimensional diffusion does not affect primarily on the fan's performance. Highly loaded fan may have actually better performance than its two dimensional design. Three dimensional designing approaches may lead to better highly loaded fan with controlled rotor hub stall.

Design of optimal fiber angles in the laminated composite fan blades (적층 복합재 팬-블레이드의 적층각도 최적화 설계)

  • The layered composites have a character to change of structure stiffness with respect to the layup angles. The deformations in the fan-blades to be initially designed by considering efficiency and noise, etc., which arise due to the pressure during the fan operation, can make the fan inefficient. Thus, so as to minimize the deformations of the blades, it is needed to increase the stiffness of the blades. An investigation has been performed to develop the three dimensional layered composite shell element with the drilling degree of freedom and the optimization module for finding optimal layup angles with sensitivity analysis. And then they have been verified. In this study, the analysis model is engine cooling fan of automobile. In order to analyzes the stiffness of the composite fan blades, finite element analysis is performed. In addition, it is linked with optimal design process, and then the optimal angles that can maximize the stiffness of the blades are found. In the optimal design process, the deformations of the blades are considered as multiobjective functions, and this results minimum bending and twisting simultaneously.

The Study of Structural Stability by Stacking Method of the Axial Blade (축류 블레이드의 스태킹 방식에 의한 구조 안정성 연구)

  • This study is to confirm the deformation of blade when the location of stacking is moving. Also, it desire to determine the most stable location of stacking from the analysis. In the previous study, it is Known that moving the location of stacking is not influence to the aerodynamic performance. In this study SolidWorks premium 2010 SP4 is used for structure analysis. In reference blade and other 3 model analysis, the two mesh type is used, one is standard mesh type in SolidWorks, the other is curvature-based mesh type. The result of curvature-based mesh type is more stable than one of the standard mesh type regardless of mesh size, the number of mesh. The deformation of blade tip is the smallest, when the location of stacking is identical to the center of gravity of the blade section profile. So, if possible is design, this study recommends that the location of stacking is identical to the center of gravity the blade.
