  • A computational study on the effect of sweep angle of axial fan on its noise is performed in the present paper. The forward swept axial fan was designed by numerical optimization method incorporated with three dimensional flow analysis. The objective function was defined by the ratio of generation rate of turbulent kinetic energy to pressure head. And, two variables related with sweep angle distribution are used for design variables. The swept fan has better performance characteristics and noise level. The experimental result shows that spectrums of no-sweet and swept fans have differences in the blade passage frequency, especially in the broadband. And the overall noise level of swept fan is lower 10dB(A) than that of no-sweep fan. For the comparison of flow fields between no-sweep fan and swept fan, CFX-TASCflow computational fluid dynamics software is used. Standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model is used for the turbulence model. Distributions of pressure and turbulent kinetic energy distributions are compared in order to find what happen in the low-noise swept fan.

  • This paper described operation and vibration characteristics of a 'tail-fan' anti-torque performance test system. KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) developed a 'tail-fan' anti-torque system of a helicopter and a performance test-rig to test the performance of the tail-fan. The performance test-rig consists of driving, supporting and rotating parts. In the process of the performance test, firstly, operation test of the test-rig were carried out to verify design specifications. Secondly, natural frequencies of fan blade and test-rig were measured respectively. Lastly, to find the operation rotating speed for the performance test, vibration test were carried out using accelerometers on tail gear box. The performance test conditions of the tail-fan to avoid a resonance were found from the fan-plot and vibration test results. The tail-fan performance tests were well done safely.

  • In this study, the experimental study has carried out to select pitch angle on the backward flow in an axial fan that has adjustable pitch blades. With the change of pitch angle of axial fan with adjustable blade, air flow rate, pressure and air flow direction can be changed. Because of this merit, adjustable axial fan can be used in the backward flow. For the selection of the backward flow pitch angle, fan performance test method is selected by KS B 6311. Dynamic pressure, static pressure, electric current and voltage are measured in each pitch angles of axial fan that are $36^{\circ}C$, $-16^{\circ}C$, $-21^{\circ}C$, $-26^{\circ}C$, $-31^{\circ}C$ and $-36^{\circ}C$. In the result of test, fan performance curves at several pitch angle has been investigated. Finally, pitch angle of $-26^{\circ}C$ has been selected to get largest flow rate at backward flow situation.

  • This paper presents a procedure for the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics of a sirocco fan. For the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic analyses of the sirocco fan, three-dimensional steady and unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a shear stress transport turbulence model for turbulence closure. The flow analyses were performed on a hexahedral grid using a finite-volume solver. The validation of the numerical results is performed by comparing with experimental data for the pressure, efficiency and power. The internal flow analyses of the sirocco fan are performed to understand the unstable flow phenomenon on the casing for the wall pressure and internal flow characteristics at each position. It was found that fluctuation of pressure and locally concentrated noise source are observed near the cut-off and expansion regions of the casing.

  • The performance of the centrifugal fan in a vacuum cleaner is affected by the hydraulic loss, such as the friction loss, the recirculation loss and the impact loss etc., Those losses depend on the rotational speed of the impeller, the inlet and exit widths, the relative flow angles to the blade, the number of the blades and the geometry of the shroud and the diffuser. These parameters are complicatedly interrelated, so the experimental means in analyzing the fans are rather limited. In the present study, the flow analysis are done numerically by changing the relevant fan parameters. A commercial code, STAR-CD, is used for the calculations. It is seen from the analyses that the computational results agree well with the experimental results. The results obtained can be used for the basic design of a centrifugal fan.

  • In a fan design, CFD analysis, which is very useful for mechanical design relating to the heat and fluid dynamics, is one of the most popular tools. However, since the CFD analysis is conventionally carried out with the constant fan speed condition, the speed change, induced by the air flow rate and motor characteristics, is hardly modeled. And, consequently, the remarkable difference exist between analysis and experimental results. In this paper, we has proposed a method of setting the varying fan speed as a boundary condition considering air flow rate and motor torque-speed characteristics. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by comparison with experimental results.

  • In many practical applications of the centrifugal fan, the impeller-diffuser interaction noise is considered as a main source of fan noise. The housing for an electric motor is also expected to play an important role on noise propagation because of its complicated configuration. This study investigates the impeller-diffuser interaction noise and its sources by computing three-dimensional, incompressible flow field of the centrifugal fan in motor housing. The effect of motor case on fan noise characteristic is then investigated using the Brinkman penalization method, while the noise source associated with impeller-diffuser interaction is mathematically modeled. It is found that the present methodology combined with mathematical description of noise source provides a fairly good agreement with the experimental results, indicating that the motor housing has significant effect on noise characteristics. Finally, aeroacoustic noise prediction for various impeller-diffuser blade count ratios is conducted for noise reduction.

  • Axial fans are widely used in heavy machines due to their ability to produce high cooling of engines. At the same time. the noise generated by these fans causes or serious problems. This work is concerned with the low noise technique of discrete. The prediction model. which allowed the calculation of acoustic pressure at the frequency and it's harmonics, has been developed by Farrasat and the Helmholtz-Kir. The newly developed Helmholtz-Kirchhoff BEM for thin body is used to calculate the sound field of the fan that is located in a engine room. To calculate the unsteady resultant force over blade. Time-Marching Free-Wake Method are used. The fan noise of fan sys unsymmetric engine-room is predicted. In this paper. the discussion is confined to and discrete noise of axial fan and front Part of engine room in heavy equipments.

  • The Sirocco fan performance and its three-dimensional flow characteristics were numerically predicted by STAR-CD software. Turbulent flow computations were performed using approximately 500,000 mesh points, and the performance results of two computational methods, transient analysis and quasi-static analysis were compared with experimental data. At present, our attention was focused on localizing the three-dimensional flow characteristics of the Sirocco fin, especially the structure of the secondary flow in the scroll and the through-flow characteristics of the Sirocco fan blades. Also, for an optimization, the scroll passage was tilted with 10 degrees to change the flow characteristics and improve the performance of the Sirocco fan.
