  • Purpose: This study propose basic materials to prepare the mentally disabled for rehabilitation nursing mediating plans, by comparing the degree of self-care of the chronically mentally disabled residing in community mental health centers between those who participate in daytime rehabilitation programs and those who do not as well as the degree of perceived burden of the two groups' families. Method: The subjects of the study were 51 chronically mentally disabled men, who participated in daytime rehabilitation programs in three mental health centers in Gyeonggi-do and their families, and 53 in-house chronically mentally disabled men, who did not participate and their families. The measuring instrument for self-care consisted of ten spheres (65 questions and 5 points a standard). To quantify the feeling of burden of families, the measuring equipment developed by Montgomery et al. was used. Results: The degree of self-care of chronically mentally disabled men participating in rehabilitation programs in community mental health centers were higher than that of men not participating, and there was a significant difference between them. Families in the group not participating in rehabilitation programs had higher score than those in the group participating, but there was no significant difference. Conclusion: The participation of the chronically mentally disabled in rehabilitation programs influenced improvement of self-care and also lessened a feeling of burden of families somewhat.

  • Objectives: This study aims to investigate the effect of marital relationship on parenting stress among dual- and single-earner families. In particular, this study focuses on the interaction effect of marital relationship and father's child-rearing involvement on the parenting stress. To access factors associated with parenting stress, we included marital satisfaction and marital conflict as the dimensions of marital relationship in this study. Method: We employed data from the 5th wave of the Panel Study of Korean Children(PSKC) data. Our analysis sample consisted of 1,515 parents having at least one child aged under 4 years. Also, this study conducted descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. Results: First of all, marital satisfaction and marital conflict were significantly related to parenting stress for both mother and father in dual-earner families. While both indicators were significantly related to parenting stress for father, marital conflict only was a significant predictor for mother in single-earner families. Second, father involvement was a significant predictor for parenting stress for father in both dual- and single-earner families. Third, interaction effects were found between father involvement and marital conflict in the dual-earner families and between father involvement and marital satisfaction in the single-earner families. Conclusions: Based on the results, we recommended programs designed to enhance father's child-rearing involvement such as parenting education and community-based campaign. In addition, we recommended that policy and practice need to identify marital relationship dynamics to promote father's involvement and to reduce marital conflict in both dual- and single-earner families accordingly.

  • This study examined the interactive effects between social service use and economic hardship on the family conflicts among low-income families. We analyzed data from about 2,000 low-income families who participated in both the first and the second waves of the Korean Welfare Panel Study using a hierarchical logistic regression model. The main results are as follows. First, take-up rates of social services among low-income families were very low. Second, among the low-income families who did not use any social service, families who experienced more economic hardship were more likely to experience family conflicts. Third, the higher levels of economic hardship increased the positive effects of social service of reducing family conflicts. These findings suggest that the resource for the social services be concentrated on the low-income families who tend to experience more economic hardship and thereby family conflicts and that comprehensive social services be provided in the programs which aim to promote family relationships.

  • Objective: Familial intracranial aneurysms (FIAs) are found in approximately 6%-20% of patients with intracranial aneurysms (IAs), suggesting that genetic predisposition likely plays a role in its pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to identify possible IA-associated variants using whole exome sequencing (WES) in selected Korean families with FIA. Materials and Methods: Among the 26 families in our institutional database with two or more IA-affected first-degree relatives, three families that were genetically enriched (multiple, early onset, or common site involvement within the families) for IA were selected for WES. Filtering strategies, including a family-based approach and knowledge-based prioritization, were applied to derive possible IA-associated variants from the families. A chromosomal microarray was performed to detect relatively large chromosomal abnormalities. Results: Thirteen individuals from the three families were sequenced, of whom seven had IAs. We noted three rare, potentially deleterious variants (PLOD3 c.1315G>A, NTM c.968C>T, and CHST14 c.58C>T), which are the most promising candidates among the 11 potential IA-associated variants considering gene-phenotype relationships, gene function, co-segregation, and variant pathogenicity. Microarray analysis did not reveal any significant copy number variants in the families. Conclusion: Using WES, we found that rare, potentially deleterious variants in PLOD3, NTM, and CHST14 genes are likely responsible for the subsets of FIAs in a cohort of Korean families.

  • Two first-generation progeny trials of Ficus variegata Blume were planted in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, consisting of 17 families from the provenances of West Nusa Tenggara (WNT) and 19 families from the provenances of Cilacap-Pangandaran (C-P), respectively. The trials were evaluated after 10 years for growth characteristics [diameter (D), tree height (H) and stem volume (V)] and wood properties [stress-wave velocity (SWV) and Pilodyn penetration (P)]. Genetic variation, the coefficient of additive genetic variation (CVA), and heritability estimation were analyzed. Subsequently, genetic correlation between traits was estimated. The analysis of variance showed that there were significant differences in growth characteristics and wood properties in the WNT families, with significance observed across most factors except for height and P in the C-P families. The CVA in growth characteristics (D, H, V) was higher than for wood quality (SWV and P) in WNT and C-P families. Estimated family heritability (h2f) for growth characteristics, SWV, and P were high in the WNT families but moderate in the C-P families showing that genetic variation in the observed traits was more additive in the WNT families. The positive estimated genetic correlations between growth characteristics in two progeny trials, and the moderate to strong negative genetic correlation between D and P and also between P and SWV showed that growth characteristics and wood quality can be genetically improved simultaneously by using D as a selection criterion is an appropriate breeding strategy for F. variegata.

  • Purpose: The Asan Hot Springs are adjacent to the Seoul Metropolitan area and have excellent traffic access. However, a steady decline in tourist numbers followed the decline in the urban population. This study aims to provide participants with a hot springs visit as part of their independent tourism experience and then analyze their feedback to obtain meaningful suggestions to enhance local tourism. Methods: We recruited 12 families interested in taking a two-day, one-night tour, including a visit to the Asan Hot Springs. Participating families were grouped into two cohorts (Type C and Type A) depending on whether they included children aged one to ten. Each family answered a survey regarding their overall satisfaction with the Asan Hot Springs and provided targeted feedback regarding hot spring resorts, accommodations, restaurants, adjacent tourist spots, and tourism costs. Results: Most of the families that participated in the study were residents of Seoul, Incheon, or Kyunggi (74.47%); the majority were two-generation families (75%) with children (75%). The Type C group enjoyed the campsite (55.56%) accommodations at the Asan Hot Springs more than their Type A counterparts. Families visited an average of 3.6 places during their stay, and 61.11% of participating families visited entertainment and tourist attractions, including the Type C visit to the thermal bath. Compared with Type A, Type C families spent more on tourism and were more satisfied with the entertainment and tourist attractions experience. Overall, all study participants were satisfied with the thermal sources. Conclusion: Our results indicate that families with children have a higher added value than visitor groups consisting only of adults. Considering the significant impact on the local economy, the Asan Hot Springs and associated tourist attractions and services should be developed with these visitors in mind.
