  • Purpose: This study was done to develop the concept of resilience focusing on cancer patients in Korea. Methods: This study was done in three phases sugggested in the Hybrid Model; theoretical phase, fieldwork phase, and analytical phase. Eight cancer patients participated in the fieldwork phase. Results: The antecedent of the concept of resilience was the crisis or adversity that threatens life or changes the quality of life. The attributes of resilience were psychosocial, relational, situational confrontation and faith (philosophical) characteristics. 1) Psychosocial : self worth, self efficacy, self-confidence, independence, optimistic & positive mind, strong will, and responsibility, 2) Relational : relation-oriented, intimacy, and social interests, 3) Situational confrontation : appraisal of stress situation, problem-oriented coping, and ability to applicate a new situation, 4) Faith (philosophical) : the belief that self-knowledge is valuable, finding positive meanings, religious belief, a belief that lives are worthwhile and meaningful, and a balanced perspective of one's life. The consequences of resilience were acceptance of adversity, getting through one's dread and apprehensions, and gratitude & sharing life. The contributing factor of resilience is positive family support. Conclusion: The concept of resilience is necessary in order to manage cancer patients for promoting quality of life so that its application may have a positive impact on the patients care.

  • The writer has worked out his original philosophy both scientific and religious, which he calls "Knownism" The new thought states; the word "known" in "knownism" means "already well-informed in the providence" about the essence of the things, and the true state of the reality, hence the knownism, as the existence of God is set forth as a premise. The knownism is a philosophy unified reasonably the science and the faith into one, for the humans can perceive and realize the essence and the true state, and authorize the truth transcending the experience by the scientific method. The new thought of the knownism is a bridge-building between the natural science and the religious faith. The idea explains that the life is the process to pursue the essence of the things and the god, and the truth is immanent in the original nature of things and in God′s sphere. This thought is a philorophy of possibility to solve the paradigms-to-be such as thinking, faith experience, and supernatural power, so that it presents a vision in the human life as a profitable religious science philosophy. The knownism is much different from agnosticism, skepticism, empiricism, and agnosticism. The grace of God may be detected differently from the supernatural power. The new dark clouds overspread abruptly the summer sky are not new ones but originally derived frosm worn-out water drops. Thus those are called the old clouds. The Korean word "known"(노운) of which pronunciation is same with the English "known" means the old clouds, hence also the name, Knownism. The root of the new clouds is detectable from the preserved old clouds. The old clouds symbolized in the paper indicate the essence and the principles of the things and the fittest, or the key for the solution of the problem in the epistemology, believing that everything has its own, proper nature, the writer sums up his theory by insisting that the humans have to find out the "old clouds" or the "known" in knownism to live eternally either in this world or in other dimensions, though the human beings are transformed into the other phases of life. The writer proclaims through the ideas for the United Nations to fortify the Confederate System of World Nations in order to ensure the world peace and the future of the humans.

Methods: The Q method, which is effective in measuring individual subjectivity, was used in this study. Results: Perception of the concept of spiritual health was found to have 3 independent types, Type I is a self-directed, present life centered type. This is a group stressing the importance of planning self-directed life and the people of this group consider the values of the present life as important. Type II is a faith-oriented, afterlife centered type. This is a group whose essence of spiritual health is religious devotion like faith in god and the people of this group do not sympathize with the oriental world view. Type III is an oriental, value-sharing type. This is a group with an oriental world view and the people of this group stress importance in sharing values with communities or others. Conclusion: These results not only become the basis for understanding the concept of spiritual health among Koreans, but also suggest the necessity of comprehensive education for spiritual health promotion.

  • This study offers an analysis of how Protestant Christianity in South Korea incorporated many beliefs and practices of Korean traditional religions in order to make the new faith more appealing to the masses. The paper also examines the way in which specific Protestant doctrines and practices were modified or accentuated to suit the disposition of the Korean people. In agreement with Confucianism, for example, Protestant churches in general emphasized the values of diligence, self-cultivation, righteous living, and, most importantly, filial piety. By overtly and subtly permitting ancestral rites to be conducted by Christians, moreover, Protestant Christianity evaded successfully the potential alienation of the tradition-bound Koreans. From Buddhism, Protestant Christianity syncretized such elements as the daily dawn prayer and all-night prayer as well as the practices of baekilgido ("a hundred-day prayer") and chunilgido ("a thousand-day prayer"). Hundreds of prayer centers that exist deep in the mountains also manifest a Buddhist influence. Shamanistic influences are also evident in Korean Protestantism, replete with the latter's emphasis on this-worldly success (health, prosperity, long life, etc.), faith healing, and conceptualization of God as being merciful and generous. What all of this reveals is that Christian conversion in South Korea did not involve an exclusivistic change of religious affiliation, meaning that it did not require the repudiation of traditionally held beliefs. Instead, millions of South Koreans eagerly embraced Protestant Christianity precisely because the new faith was advanced as an extension or continuation of traditional religious practices.

Methods: The study was cross-sectional descriptive survey. A self-report questionnaire were used to collect data from 335 college students during June to July, 2010. Data were analyzed by ${\chi}^2$-test, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression using the SPSS/WIN 14.0 program. Results: The mean score of depressive symptom was $17.55{\pm}11.24$ and prevalence of depression was 26.5% in college freshmen. And those in college seniors were $14.18{\pm}14.17$ and 17.4%. And those were significantly higher in college freshmen than in seniors. The depressive symptom was a significant negative correlation with spiritual well-being, existential spiritual well-being, religious spiritual well-being, and faith maturity. Factors significantly influencing on depression in college freshmen included existential spiritual well-being, subjective health status, age, and confidence of salvation ($R^2$=49.7%). And those in college seniors included existential spiritual well-being and life satisfaction ($R^2$=53.3%). Conclusion: The counseling program and spirituality development program for preventing depression considering these affecting factors for especially college freshmen are necessary.

  • This paper explores the relationship between Korean immigrants to the United States and their religious identity from the cultural point of view. Most scholarly studies on Korean immigrants in the United States have been dominated by sociological approach and ethnic studies in examining the social dimension of the Korean immigrant communities while neglecting issues concerning their religious identity and cultural heritage. Most Korean immigrants to America attend Korean churches regardless their religious affiliation before they came to America. One of the reasons for this phenomenon is the fact that Korean church has provided a necessary social service for the newly arrived immigrants. Korean churches have been able to play a key role in the life of Korean immigrants. Korean immigrants, however, have shown a unique aspect regarding their religious identity compared to other immigrants communities in the United States. America is a nation of immigrants, coming from different parts of the world. Each immigrant community has brought their unique cultural heritage and religious persuasion. Asian immigrants, for example, brought their own traditional religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism. People from the Middle Eastern countries brought Islamic faith while European Jews brought the Jewish tradition. In these immigrant communities, religious identity and cultural heritage were homo genously harmonized. Jewish people built synagogue and taught Hebrew, Jewish history, culture, and faith. In this case, synagogue was not only the house of worship for Jews but also the center for learning Jewish history, culture, faith, and language. In short, Jewish cultural history was intimately related to Jewish religious history; for Jewish immigrants, learning their social and political history was indeed identical with leaning of their religious history. The same can be said about the relationship between Indian community and Hinduism. Hindu temples serve as the center of Indian immigrantsin providing the social, cultural, and spiritual functions. Buddhist temples, for that matter, serve the same function to the people from the Asian countries. Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Tibetans, and Thais have brought their respective Buddhist traditions to America and practice and maintain both their religious faith and cultural heritage. Middle Eastern people, for example, have brought Islamic faith to the United States, and Mosques have become the center for learning their language, practicing their faith, and maintaining their cultural heritage. Korean immigrants, unlike any other immigrant group, have brought Christianity, which is not a Korean traditional religion but a Western religion they received in 18th and 19th centuries from the West and America, back to the United States, and church has become the center of their lives in America. In this context, Koreans and Korean-Americans have a unique situation in which they practice Christianity as their religion but try to maintain their non-Christian cultural heritage. For the Korean immigrants, their religious identity and cultural identity are not the same. Although Korean church so far has provides the social and religious functions to fill the need of Korean immigrants, but it may not be able to become the most effective institution to provide and maintain Korean cultural heritage. In this respect, Korean churches must be able to open to traditional Korean religions or the religions of Korean origin to cultivate and nurture Korean cultural heritage.

  • The purpose of this study is to test the correlation between spiritual well-being and mental health of nursing students and to provide baseline data of nursing education for the christian college. The data was collected from 10th to 30th September. 2000. The subjects were 220 nursing students. The instruments used for the study were the spiritual well-being scale developed by Paloutzian & Ellison (1982) and Gou Seong Hee's mental health (1989). The data was analyzed by using SPSS/PC. The study results were as follows: 1.There were significant differences between the type of religion (F=27.22, p=0.000), abscence of faith (F=65.33, p=0.000), grade (F=6.76, p=0.000), effect of religion on life style (F=14.21, p=0.000) and spiritual well-being. 2.There were significant differences between grade (F=4.87, p=0.009), satisfaction of nursing (F=6.47, p=0.000) and mental health. 3.There was positively significant partial correlation between spiritual well-being and mental health (r=0.52, p=0.000). The higher spiritual well-being score and the higher mental health was supported. 4.The mean score on the spiritual well-being scale was 3.48±0.64. The mean score on the mental health scale was 3.67±0.54. Viewing that, The type of religion, abscence of faith, effect of religion on life style, and grade contributed significantly in spiritual well-being for nursing students.
