  • Diffuse optical wireless (DOW) systems have the advantage that they do not require point-to-point siting so one transmitter can communicate with several receivers. In this paper, we investigate multiple access scheduling methods for downlink orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in diffuse optical wireless networks. Unlike the radio frequency (RF) channel, the DOW channel has low-pass filter characteristics and so requires different scheduling methods than those developed for the RF channel. Multi-user diversity orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems nominate a cluster of subcarriers with the largest signal-to-noise-ratio for transmission. However, in a DOW channel, most users would choose the lowest frequency clusters of subcarriers. To remedy this problem, we make two proposals. The first is to use a variable cluster size across the subcarriers; the lower frequency clusters will have fewer subcarriers while the higher frequency clusters will have more subcarriers. This will equalize the capacity of the clusters. The second proposal is to randomize a user's cluster selection from a group of clusters satisfying a minimum threshold. Through simulation it is shown that combining these strategies can increase the throughput while ensuring a fair distribution of the available spectrum.

  • This paper proposes an access control algorithm for guaranteeing fair packet transmissions in CDMA-based slotted ALOHA systems. In the proposed algorithm, the base station calculates the packet transmission and retransmission probabilities based on the offered loads and then broadcasts these probabilities to all mobile stations. Mobile stations, which have a packet to transmit, attempt to transmit a packet with the received probabilities. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can offer better system throughput and average delay than the conventional algorithm. Results also show that the proposed algorithm can guarantee a good fairness among all mobile stations regardless of the offered loads.

  • This paper proposes an MAC protocol for fair packet data services in stoned CDMA system. In slotted CDMA system, the packets transmitted in the same slot act as multiple access interference, so that unsuccessful packet transmissions are entirely caused by multiple access interference. Therefore, in order to get the optimal system throughput, the number of simultaneously transmitted Packets should be kept at a proper level. In the proposed protocol, the base station calculates the new and retransmitted packet transmission probability of mobile stations according to the offered load and then broadcasts these probabilities. Mobile stations, which have a packet, attempt to transmit packet with the received probabilities. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can offer better system throughput than the conventional scheme, and guarantee a good fairness among all mobile stations regardless of the offered load.

  • In this paper, we propose an Adaptive Regulating Drop (ARD) marker, as a novel dropping strategy at the ingressive edge router, to improve TCP fairness in assured services (ASs) without a decrease in the link utilization. To drop packets pertinently, the ARD marker adaptively changes a Temporary Permitted Rate (TPR) for aggregate TCP flows. The TPR is set larger than the current input IN packet rate of aggregate TCP flows while inversely proportional to the measured input OUT packet rate. To reduce the excessive use of greedy TCP flows by notifying droppings of their IN packets constantly to them without a decrease in the link utilization, the ARD marker performs random early fair remarking of their excessive IN packets to OUT packets at the aggregate flow level according to the TPR. In addition, an aggregate dropper is combined to drop some excessive IN packets fairly and constantly according to the TPR. Thus, the throughput of a TCP flow no more depends on only the sporadic and unfair OUT packet droppings at the RIO buffer in the core router. Then, the ARD marker regulates the packet transmission rate of each TCP flow to the contract rate by increasing TCP fairness, without a decrease in the link utilization.

  • To provide the end-to-end service differentiation for assured services, the random early demotion and promotion (REDP) marker in the edge router at each domain boundary monitors the aggregate flow of the incoming in-profile packets and demotes in-profile packets or promotes the previously demoted in-profile packets at the aggregate flow level according to the negotiated interdomain service level agreement (SLA). The REDP marker achieves UDP fairness in demoting and promoting packets through random and early marking decisions on packets. But, TCP fairness of the REDP marker is not obvious as for UDP sources. In this paper, to improve TCP fairness of the REDP marker, we propose a modified REDP marker where we combine a dropper, meters and a token filling rate configuration component with the REDP marker. To make packet transmission rates of TCP flows more fair, at the aggregate flow level the combined dropper drops incoming excessive in-profile packets randomly with a constant probability when the token level in the leaky bucket stays in demotion region without incoming demoted in-profile packets. Considering the case where the token level cannot stay in demotion region without the prior demotion, we propose a token filling rate configuration method using traffic meters. By using the token filling rate configuration method, the modified REDP marker newly configures a token filling rate which is less than the negotiated rate determined by interdomain SLA and larger than the current input aggregate in-profile traffic rate. Then, with the newly configured token filling rate, the token level in the modified REDP marker can stay in demotion region pertinently fir the operation of the dropper to improve TCP fairness. We experiment with the modified REDP marker using ns2 simulator fur TCP sources at the general case where the token level cannot stay in demotion region without the prior demotion at the negotiated rate set as the bottleneck link bandwidth. The simulation results demonstrate that through the combined dropper with the newly configured token filling rate, the modified REDP marker also increases both aggregate in-profile throughput and link utilization in addition to TCP fairness improvement compared to the REDP marker.

  • In the case of CDMA-based packet data systems such as 1xEV-DO which are designed to support high rate services, BSs transmit data packets with a maximum power based on time multiplexing mode such that only one user can be serviced at a time. In this paper, we propose a joint power allocation and scheduling algorithm for 1xEV-DO-like systems in which we adopt a code division multiplexing (CDM) transmission method in the downlink common channel in order to utilize channel orthogonality such that we can serve more than one user at a time slot especially when there exist remaining resources after serving the firstly selected user by the scheduler. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can improve the performances of conventional schemes such as the maximum rate and the proportional fair algorithms.

  • In this paper, we evaluate the capacity of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services over high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA), in which frame-bundling (FB) is incorporated to reduce the effect of relatively large headers in the IP/UDP/RTP layers. Also, a modified proportional pair (PF) packet scheduler design supporting for VoIP service is provided. The main focus of this work is the effect of FB on system outage based on delay budget in radio access networks. Simulation results show that VoIP system performance with FB scheme is highly sensitive to delay budget. We also conclude that HSDPA is attractive for transmission of VoIP if compared to the circuit switched (CS) voice that is used in WCDMA (Release'99).

  • This paper proposed a collision avoidance scheme to improve the network performance and priority control scheme to support real-time ATM applications in CIF(Cells in Frames), which carries ATM cells over existing Ethernet interfaces. The proposed scheme has optimized for the two nodes Ethernet, that is a typical CIF network, and doesn't require any hardware modification of existing Ethernet interface card. The collision avoidance scheme gives fair access opprtunities with minimized contention to the nodes by assigning different inter-frame gap to each element of CIF network. The priority control scheme guarantees preemptive transmission of real-time frames to the medium by exchanging queuing status information between two nodes. Therefore in this paper it is shown that CIF network which has both the collision avoidance scheme of MAC layer and the priority control scheme of CIF layer has a improved network performance and supports real-time ATM applications efficiently.

  • In this paper, we propose energy-aware routing schemes which are simple enough to be applicable to the wireless sensor networks. The one hop upstream no de in direction of the base-station is determined in four different ways based on the energy information of neighboring nodes, which are obtainable via the process of self-organization of the network. The fair distribution of the energy consumption over all the possible routes to the base-station is one of the design objectives. Also, an alternate route search mechanism is proposed to cope with the situation in which no routing information is available due to lack of remaining energy of the neighboring nodes. The mechanism turns out to be a supplementary scheme to improve the energy efficiency. Lots of simulations are performed to examine the performance metrics such as the energy efficiency, throughput, network lifetime, and the transmission latency of the proposed schemes. Simulation results show the feasibility of the simple routing schemes for the sensor networks.
