  • Bit damage is one of the primary causes of decreasing drilling efficacy. Nevertheless the management of bit ware and failure are often left for field engineers' experience. Thus it is imperative to establish a proper system to predict and manage the bit damage during the rock drilling process. In this study, the drilling sound signal has been recorded and analyzed using wavelet transform analysis to identify the exact moment of bit failure. Through the analysis wavelet time-frequency spectrums have been constructed and an abnormal point has been identified with 0.9 of wavelet transform value at the 652.8s on a frequency band around 500Hz. Furthermore it is also observed that the penetration rate of the damaged bit has been decreased to 23mm/s which is 9mm/sec lower than the average of undamaged bit. The study verifies that wavelet transform analysis can be used to build a system to diagnose the bit damage while drilling.

  • This paper proposes a method to predict the ductility capacity of reinforced concrete beam-column joints failing in shear after the formations of plastic hinges at both ends of the adjacent beams. The current design code divides joints into two categories: Type 1 for structures in non seismically hazard area and Type 2 in seismically hazard area. While there are many researches related to joint shear strength in Type 1, those in regard to joint ductility capacity of Type 2 are scarce. This paper classified the ductility capacity of beam-column joints into column, joint panel, and beam deformability. Since a brittle failure such as shear or bond failure in the columns must be avoided, column deformability was calculated by elastic analysis. The plastic hinges of the adjacent beams affect joint deformability. Therefore, the prediction of joint deformability was calculated with consideration to the degradation of the diagonally compressed concrete due to the strain penetration.

  • SCP(Sand Compaction Pile) method that forms a composite ground by driving compacted sand piles into the soft ground. This method is one of the soil improvement techniques for reinforcing and strengthening soft ground deposits. This thesis describes the investigation on the behavior of soft ground reinforced with SCP by low improvement ratio. Direct shear test and consolidation test carried out to verified behavior of composite ground reinforced with SCP. Test results were discussed with reference to the amount of consolidation settlement, variation of shear resistance with area replacement ratio and effect of the stress concentration. And, laboratory model loading test carried out to verified the effect of the location and failure mode of reinforced embankment. Residual shear strength varies with the area replacement and constrict load in the low replacement ratio. Calculated stress concentration ratio overestimate than proposed valve by experimental, theoretical and analytical method. As regards the location, improving right below of the top of the slope was more effective than below of the toe of the slope. This thesis carried out to obtain fundamental information of behavior of the composit ground. Hereafter, centrifuge test that reproduce stress state of the in-situ must be necessary through the further study about pile penetration, reinforce position and construct time.

  • Most reinforcements in concrete are constructed by steel. Corrosion of reinforcement is the main cause of damage and early failure of reinforced concrete structures. The corrosion is mainly professed by the chloride ingress. In general, chloride in concrete can be discriminated by two components, total chloride and fire chloride. This paper provides a testing method on the coefficient of chloride diffusion in concrete and the relationship between total chloride and free chloride in concrete for the composition of predicting model on diffusion rate of chloride. In order to complete this predicting model, this study will use chloride penetration characteristic, diffusion coefficient and experiment of color change on silver nitrate solution. This predicting model is going to help that grasp special quality on salt content inclusion of concrete structure that is exposed in chloride environment. Accurate predicting model can be effectively used not only in selecting of repair time but also in preventing from various deteriorations.

  • Tensile strength of soil is one of the important strength parameters in geotechnical engineering. The importance of the tensile strength of soil has been pointed out and given considerable attention in many highway pavements and earthfill dams. Recently, one of tensile strength problems, cracking failure of clay liners which is related to leakage of polluted water has been reported. Thus, the tensile strength of compacted sand-bentonite mixtures, which are used widely in the landfill construction site as clay liners was measured by Improved Unconfined Penetration (IUP) test. In addition, to find out the effects of contamination levels of water on the tensile strength and desiccation crack pattern, different pH levels of water were used for making specimens prepared with three different mixing contents of bentonite.

  • Sperm competent for fertilization can become capacitated, bind to the zona pellucida (ZP)of an egg in a specific manner, and complete acrosomal exocytosis. Failure to carry out these functions results in infertility. Although the interactions between the ZP and the plasma membrane overlying the sperm acrosome have been considered important for sperm-egg recognition and signalling recent results have prompted a reassessment of current paradigms concerning these interactions. In this review, we're going to discuss about the roles of the acrosomal matrix, the particulate component of the acrosomal contents, in fertilization. The general hypothesis is that acrosomal exocytosis leads to the exposure of acrosomal matrix proteins that become de facto extracellula matrix(ECM) on the surface of the sperm head, and that the dynamic interactions of this newly-exposed sperm ECM with the egg ECM (the ZP) govern sperm-egg recognition and sperm penetration of the ZP. Informations from these experiments may provide new ways to address the poor ZP binding of sperm from some human infertility patients and may offer new avenues for contraception through the disruption of purposeful sperm-ZP binding.

  • In mechanical testing of W-Ni-Pe heavy alloys, the cracks nucleate at W/W interface and propagate through W/ Imatrix interface or through matrix phase together with the cleavage of W grains. The mechanical properties can therefore be improved by control of the interfacial strength and area. In this presentation, some experimental result and techniques on this subject will be reviewed and discussed. The hydrogen embrittlement caused by the hydrogen segregation at interfaces during sintering in an hydrogen atmosphere can be removed by an heat-treattnent in vacuum or in an inert atmosphere. The heat-treatment condition can be estimated by using a diffusion equation for a cylindrical shape. The mechanical properties, in particular the impact property, are degraded by the segregation of non-metallic impurities, such as Sand P. The degradation can be prevented by adding a fourth element, such as La or Ca, active with the non-metallic impurities. The cyclic heat-treatment at usual heat-treattnent tempemture causes the penetration of matrix between W/W grain boundaries and results in remarkable increase in impact energy. This is due to an increase in the area of ductile failure during the impact test. The instability of W/matrix interface casued by addition of Mo or Re can be controlled by using W powders of different size. The increase in the interfacial area in found to be related to the presence of non-equilibrium pure W gmins among W(Mo or Re) solid solution gmins.

  • The need for Dissimilar Welded Joint (DWJ) in the power plant components arises in order to increase the overall efficiency of the plant and to avoid premature failure in the component welds. The Activated-Tungsten Inert Gas (A-TIG) welding process, which is a variant of Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding, is focus of this review work concerning the DWJ of nuclear grade creep-strength enhanced ferritic/martensitic (CSEF/M) steels and austenitic steels. A-TIG DWJs are compared with Multipass-Tungsten Inert Gas (M-TIG) DWJ based on their mechanical and microstructural properties. The limitations of multipass welding have put A-TIG welding in focus as A-TIG provides a weld with increased depth of penetration (DOP) and enhanced mechanical properties. Hence, this review article covers the A-TIG welding principle and working parameters along with detailed analysis of role played by the flux in welding procedure. Further, weld characteristics of martensitic and austenitic steel DWJ developed with the A-TIG welding process and the M-TIG welding process are compared in this study as there are differences in mechanical, microstructural, creep-related, and residual stress obtained in both TIG variants. The mechanics involved in the welding process is deliberated which is revealed by microstructural changes and behavior of base metals and WFZ.

  • Molten corium-concrete interaction (MCCI) is one of the most important phenomena that can lead to the potential hazard of late containment failure due to basemat penetration during a severe accident. In this study, MCCI analytical models of the CORQUENCH code were prepared through verification calculations of several experiments, which had been performed using concrete types similar to those of the calandria vault floor in CANDU-6 plants. The behaviors of thermal-hydraulic variables related to MCCI phenomena were analyzed under the conditions of dry floor and water flooding during the severe accident stemming from a hypothetic station blackout. Uncertainty analyses on the ablation depth were also carried out. It was estimated that the concrete ablation was not interrupted due to the continuous MCCI process under the dry condition but was terminated within 24 hours under the water flooding condition. It was confirmed that the water flooding as a mitigating action was effective to achieve the quenching and thermal stabilization of the melt discharged from the calandria vessel, showing that the present models are capable of reasonably simulating MCCI phenomena in CANDU-6 plants. This study is expected to provide the technical bases to the accident management strategy during the late-phase severe accidents.

  • This study focuses on evaluating the reliability index of a deck of RC slab having chloride contamination and studying the relation of grades of rebar corrosion and the reliability index of a bridge deck For this purpose, first, the failure probability related to flexural strength was calculated using a model for deterioration, which contains the application of deicing salts that usually causes significant long-term deterioration and reduction in the structural safety for strength of structure. And also, according to the depth of covering, the chloride contents depending on time due to depths of RC slab deck, the appearance time for initial corrosion of rebar and the occurrence time for split of covering were investigated using a MCS method.
