  • COMS On-board FDIR(Failure Detection, Isolation and Recovery) functions are implemented on the on-board software to satisfy the autonomy and failure tolerance requirements. This paper presents concepts of COMS Failure Management with hierarchical layers and addresses the characteristics of the FDIR layer from low level to high level. It is aimed at giving the reader the understanding how the COMS FDIR was designed and how works. It first recalls what are the system level applicable requirements, which are based on the COMS mission requirements. Then it describes the philosophy and structure of the FDIR and subsequently breaks it down into the several FDIR layers. It could be used as an important and useful reference of the information to design and develop an automatic FDIR mechanism in the future.

  • Fault tolerant control algorithm for heteropolar magnetic bearings are presented. This fault tolerant control utilizes grouping of currents as C-cores in order to isolate magnetic fluxes. Hardware requirements to maintain fault tolerant control are reduced since decoupling chokes are not required in this control scheme. The currents supplied to each pole are redistributed, if some coils fail suddenly, such that the resultant magnetic forces should remain invariant through coil failure events. Load capacity before magnetic saturation is reduced through coil failures while maintaining the same magnetic forces before and after failure.

  • A magnetic bearing even with multiple coil failure can produce the same decoupled magnetic forces as those before failure if the remaining coil currents are properly redistributed. This fault-tolerant, force invariance control can be achieved with simply replacing the distribution matrix with the appropriate one shortly after coils fail, without modifying feedback control law. The distribution gain matrix that satisfies the necessary constraint conditions of decoupling linearized magnetic forces is determined with the Lagrange Multiplier optimization method.

  • In nuclear plants, UVR (under voltage relay, 27r) of 1E bus, which protected and supplied power to essential loads, to safety trip of reactor and supplied to starting signal of EDG (emergency diesel generators) automatically. therefore UVR tolerances setting and calculation method has been important to nuclear facility. If calculation and tolerances values differ or ignore, may induced power loss and economical loss by protective failure. This paper show results for calculation methods, and whether dependant or independent methods for factors. included whether PT (potential transformer/voltage transformer) tolerance or not adapted, and based on UVR setting method within a difference minimum and maximum of rated voltage to safety operation in nuclear plants.

  • Hot Standby sparing system detecting faults by using software, and being tolerant any faults by using Hardware Redundancy is difficult to perform quantitative reliability prediction and to detect real time faults. Therefore, this paper designs Hot Standby sparing system using hardware basis self checking logic in order to overcome this problem. It also performs failure mode analysis of Hot Standby sparing system with designed self checking logic by using FMEA (Failure Mode Effect Analysis), and identifies reliability assessment of the controller designed by quantifying the numbers of failure development by using FTA (Fault Tree Analysis)

  • Fault-tolerant gait generation of a hexapod robot with crab walking is proposed. The considered fault is a locked joint failure, which prevents a joint of a leg from moving and makes it locked in a known position. Due to the reduced workspace of a failed leg, fault-tolerant crab walking has a limitation in the range of heading direction. In this paper, an accessible range of the crab angle is derived for a given configuration of the failed leg and, based on the principles of fault-tolerant gait planning, periodic crab gaits are proposed in which a hexapod robot realizes crab walking after a locked joint failure, having a reasonable stride length and stability margin. The proposed crab walking is then applied to path planning on uneven terrain with positive obstacles. i.e., protruded obstacles which legged robots cannot cross over but have to take a roundabout route to avoid. The robot trajectory should be generated such that the crab angle does not exceed the restricted range caused by a locked joint failure.

  • Transplantation would be the only way to cure the end-stage organ failure involving heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas. The replacement of the parts of the body damaged to lose its function or lost to trauma must be a dream of human-being. Human history is replete with chimeras, from sphinxes to mermaids, making one wonder if the ancients might actually have dreamed of what now is called 'xenotransplantation'. In the 20th century, the transplantation of organs and tissues to cure disease has become a clinical reality. The development in the fields of surgical techniques, physiology and immunology attributed to the successful transplantation in human. In the center of the successful transplantation lies the progress in understanding the cellular and molecular biology of immune system which led to the development of immunosuppressive drugs and the invention of the concept of immunological tolerance. The mandatory side effects of immunosuppressive drugs including infection and cancer forced us to search alternative approaches along with the development of new immunosuppressive agents. Among the alternative approaches, the induction of a state of immunologic tolerance would be the most promising and the most generic applicability as a future therapy. Recent reports documenting long-term graft survival without immunosuppression suggest that tolerance-based therapies may become a clinical reality. Last year, we saw the epoch making success of overcoming hyperacute rejection in porcine to primate xenotransplantation which will lead porcine to human xenotransplantation to clinical reality. In this review, I dare to summarize the development of transplantation immunology from the perspective of history.

  • As many systems depend on electronics in an intelligent vehicle, concern for fault tolerance is growing rapidly. For example, a car with its braking controlled by electronics and no mechanical linkage from brake pedal to calipers of front tires(brake-by-wire system) should be fault tolerant because a failure can come without any warning and its effect is devastating. In general, fault tolerance is usually designed by placing redundant components that duplicate the functions of the original module. In this way a fault can be isolated, and safe operation is guaranteed by replacing the faulty module with its redundant and normal module within a predefined interval. In order to make in-vehicle network fault tolerant, this paper presents the concept and design methodology of an IEEE 1451 based dual CAN module. In addition, feasibility of the dual CAN network was evaluated by implementing the dual CAN module.
