A Case Study on Engineering Failure Analysis of Link Chain

  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of chain installation condition on stress distribution that could eventually cause disastrous failure from sudden deformation and geometric rupture. Methods: Fractographic method used for the failed chain indicates that over-stress was considered as the root cause of failure. 3D modeling and finite element analysis for the chain, used in a crane hook, were performed with a three-dimensional interactive application program, CATIA, commercial finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamic software, ANSYS. Results: The results showed that the state of stress was changed depending on the initial position of the chain that was installed in the hook. Especially, the magnitude of the stress was strongly affected by the bending forces, which are 2.5 times greater (under the simulation condition currently investigated) than that from the plain tensile load. Also, it was noted that the change of load state is strongly related to the failure of parts. The chain can hold an ultimate load of about 8 tons with only the tensile load acting on it. Conclusion: The conclusions of this research clearly showed that a reduction of the loss from similar incidents can be achieved when an operator properly handles the installation of the chain.

Analysis for mechanical characteristics and failure models of coal specimens with non-penetrating single crack

  • It is normal to observe the presence of numerous cracks in coal body. And it has significantly effective on the mechanical characteristics and realistic failure models of coal mass. Therefore, this paper is to investigate the influence of crack parameters on coal body by comprehensive using theoretical analysis, laboratory experiments and numerical simulation through prepared briquette specimens. Different from intact coal body possessing single peak in stress-strain curve, other specimens with crack angle can be illustrated to own double peaks. Moreover, the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of specimens decreases and follow by increasing with the increase of crack angle. It seems to like a parabolic shape with an upward opening. And it can be demonstrated that the minimum UCS is obtained in crack angle $45^{\circ}$. In terms of failure types, it is interesting to note that there is a changing trend from tensile failure to tensile-shear mixing failure with tension dominant follow by shear dominant with the increase of crack angle. However, the changing characteristics of UCS and failure forms can be explained by elastic-plastic and fracture mechanics. Lastly, the results of numerical simulations are good consistent with the experimental results. It provides experimental and theoretical foundations to reveal fracture mechanism of coal body with non-penetrating single crack further.

  • 자율주행자동차는 고장이 발생하면 큰 위험에 노출되기 쉬우며, 이런 이유로 각국에서는 자율주행자동차가 본격적으로 양산되기 전부터 고장 안전성을 객관화된 기준으로 평가하기 위한 연구에 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다. 특히 레벨3로 불리는 조건부 자율주행자동차는 고장이 발생할 경우 제어권이 운전자에게 이전되어야 하는데 이때에 운전자의 제어 가능성이 충분히 확보되어야 한다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 조건부 자율주행자동차를 대상으로 고장 안전성을 정량적으로 평가할 수 있는 방법에 관한 연구를 수행하였으며, 개발된 방법을 시뮬레이션을 통해 검증하였다. 또한 본 논문에서 제안하는 평가 방법이 고장 안전성을 정량적으로 판단할 수 있음을 확인 하였다.

  • Prevention of electrical and mechanical accidents from consumer switches needs early to detect and repair failure parts of the switches. But, safety accidents by the switches of consumers occur from non-systematic safety inspection techniques. So, we develope and propose the safety inspection techniques of the consumer switches.

Analytical study of the failure mode and pullout capacity of suction anchors in sand

  • Suction anchors are widely adopted and play an important role in mooring systems. However, how to reliably predict the failure mode and ultimate pullout capacity of the anchor in sand, especially by an easy-to-use theoretical method, is still a great challenge. Existing methods for predicting the inclined pullout capacity of suction anchors in sand are mainly based on experiments or finite element analysis. In the present work, based on a rational mechanical model for suction anchors and the failure mechanism of the anchor in the seabed, an analytical model is developed which can predict the failure mode and ultimate pullout capacity of suction anchors in sand under inclined loading. Detailed parametric analysis is performed to explore the effects of different parameters on the failure mode and ultimate pullout capacity of the anchor. To examine the present model, the results from experiments and finite element analysis are employed to compare with the theoretical predictions, and a general agreement is obtained. An analytical method that can evaluate the optimal position of the attachment point is also proposed in the present study. The present work demonstrates that the failure mode and pullout capacity of suction anchors in sand can be easily and reasonably predicted by the theoretical model, which might be a useful supplement to the experimental and numerical methods in analyzing the behavior of suction anchors.

FMEA에서 고장 심각도의 탐지시간에 따른 위험성 평가 (Risk Evaluation in FMEA when the Failure Severity Depends on the Detection Time)

  • The FMEA is a widely used technique to pre-evaluate and avoid risks due to potential failures for developing an improved design. The conventional FMEA does not consider the possible time gap between occurrence and detection of failure cause. When a failure cause is detected and corrected before the failure itself occurs, there will be no other effect except the correction cost. But, if its cause is detected after the failure actually occurs, its effects will become more severe depending on the duration of the uncorrected failure. Taking this situation into account, a risk metric is developed as an alternative to the RPN of the conventional FMEA. The severity of a failure effect is first modeled as linear and quadratic severity functions of undetected failure time duration. Assuming exponential probability distribution for occurrence and detection time of failures and causes, the expected severity is derived for each failure cause. A new risk metric REM is defined as the product of a failure cause occurrence rate and the expected severity of its corresponding failure. A numerical example and some discussions are provided for illustration.

SCP개량지반상에 성토시공 시 최적설계에 관한 연구 (Study on Optimum Design for Embankment Construction on Soft Ground Treated by SCP)

  • 본 연구에서는 모래다짐말뚝 (SCP)로 개량된 연약점토지반상의 성토시공에 있어서 최적설계조건에 대해 현행 설계법과 손실평가함수 및 1차 근사 2계 모멘트법 (AFOSM)에 기초한 신뢰성 설계법으로 비교 검토하였다. 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1) 안전율(Fs)와 파괴확률($P_F$)는 심한 비선형 관계를 나타냈고, Fs가 1.2로 증가함에 따라 $P_F$는 약 1%까지 급격한 감소를 나타낸 후, 안전율의 증가와 더불어 $P_F$는 점진적으로 감소하였다. 현행 설계법상의 기준 안전율 1.2는 둘의 관계에 있어서 일종의 임계값이며, 이들의 관계가 적절히 고려되어 정립되었다고 판단된다. 2) 최소기대총비용을 나타내는 안전율은 1.15부근으로 현행설계기준 1.2에 다소 못미치는 값으로 나타났고, 파괴확률은 1% 정도로 다소 컸다. 3) 응력분담비 n과 모래의 내부마찰각 ${\phi}$의 민감도가 연약층의 초기비배수강도 관련 변수들의 민감도보다 더 크게 나타났다. 이것은 n과 ${\phi}$의 변동 특성이 보다 해석결과에 큰 영향을 준다는 것과 이들 변동 특성은 SCP 개량지반상의 성토안정해석에 반드시 고려되어야 함을 의미한다. 4) 설계기준안전율 1.2 이상(파괴확률 0.1-0.3% 이하)에서 New Failure Point는 평균치에서 표준편차의 1~2배 가량 떨어져 있는 값을 나타냈다.

  • 균질토 사면에서 파괴에 대한 확률론적모델이 제시되었다. 사면의 안전은 관례적인 안전을 보다는 파괴확률로써 측정된다. 사면파괴의 Safety Margin은 정규분포라 가정하였다. 어떤 균질한 흙층에 있어서 흙의 특성에 영향을 주는 불확실성의 원인은 본래의 공간적인 가변성, 불충분한 시료에서 오는 판단오차 그리고 실험오차등이 었다. 파괴면을 따라 존재하는 전단강도의 불확실성은 1차원 Random Field Madels로 표현되었다. 파괴aus의 양상은 대수나선 곡선을 따른다고 가정하였다. 파괴면과 그것을 따라 작용하는 힘의 통계적 특성을 유도하여 사면의 파괴확률을 계산하였다. 마지막으로 개발된 절차가 사면의 신뢰성 해석에 대한 하나의 예제 연구에 적용되었다.

Experimental study of crack propagation of rock-like specimens containing conjugate fractures

  • The presence of defects in nature changes the physical parameters of the rock. In this paper, by studying the rock-like specimens with conjugated fractures, the horizontal angle and length are changed, and the physical parameters and failure modes of the specimens under uniaxial compression test are analyzed and compared with the results of simulation analysis. The experimental results show that the peak strength and failure mode of the rock-like specimens are closely related to the horizontal angle. When the horizontal angle is $45^{\circ}$, the maximum value is reached and the tensile failure mode is obtained. The fracture length affects the germination and propagation path of the cracks. It is of great significance to study the failure modes and mechanical properties of conjugated fracture rock-like specimens to guide the support of fractured rock on site.

  • An accident related with elevators can cause death or serious injury of operators or passengers. This kind of a fatal accident is due to a failure of elevator. The reduction of failures of elevators is important to reduce the occurrence of elevator accident. Thus, this paper presents the results of analysis for the failure of elevators using the failure data of elevator. The results of analysis can be used to make a maintenance process of elevators.
