The Roles of Online Instructional Facilitators and Student Performance of Online Class Activity

  • The study investigates the effects of online instructional facilitator's qualities on student performance of online class activities. The study explores the roles of instructional facilitators who may influence student performance of online class activities and their academic achievement. The study employs a set of aggregated data from 1,362 subjects and 10 facilitators who participated in multiple online classes. The results of independent samples t-test reveal that the student performance in online classes has no association with facilitators' educational background or academic degree, as well as demographic characteristics, student evaluation records and instructional achievement. The results of multiple regression analysis show that the facilitator engagement has a positive relation to the enhancement of student interaction, reading discussion messages, and the quality of discussion messages in online discussions. The results of correlation analysis show that the facilitator engagement has a positive impact on both increasing the number of reading discussion messages and enhancing the quality of discussion messages. The facilitator engagement increases the quantity of reading discussion postings and enhances the quality of discussion messages, which would be a substantial contribution to student performance by facilitators. The findings suggest that student performance and academic achievement in online classes are not independent of facilitator engagement.

A Concept Analysis of 'Facilitator' in Simulation Nursing Education (시뮬레이션 간호 교육에서의 '촉진자(facilitator)' 개념분석)

  • Purpose: This study was to identify and define the concept of a facilitator and specific attributes for providing basic data on simulation nursing education. Methods: Using Walker and Avant's (2005) criteria that identify the attributes, antecedents, and consequences of facilitators in simulation nursing education, the findings of research articles published from 2001 to 2017 were reviewed. Results: There were three aspects of the facilitator concept in simulation nursing education: (1) continuous support throughout the entire simulation process; (2) skilled progress based on clinical expertise; (3) guidance for learners to actively understand and reflect on the situation. Conclusion: This concept analysis helps us to better understand better facilitators in simulation nursing education.

Implementation of an Efficient Service Discovery Protocol for Directory Facilitator Based on CALM Agent (CLAM 에이전트 기반 Directory Facilitator를 위한 효율적인 서비스 디스커버리 프로토콜 구현)

  • Current service discovery protocols such as UPnP, Jini, SLP provide the basic function which is message exchange pattern, service representation and description, in service discovery. They does not guarantee service interoperability among service discovery. Therefore, in this paper, we design and implement CLAM (Component-based Autonomic Layered Middleware) agent platform to enable an efficient service discovery through extension of DF agent function in FIPA-compliant specification. Also, we propose an efficient service discovery mechanism using DHT-Chord algorithm to guarantee scalability and interoperability in DF agent.

A Study on the Adapting Process of Nursing Students to Problem Based Learning (간호학생들의 문제중심학습 적응과정에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify the adaptation process to problem based learning(PBL) among nursing students who have experienced PBL classes for two years. Method: Data was collected from 11 nursing students with in-depth interviews and direct observation of their PBL experiences by a researcher who has been a facilitator for PBL class for 3years. Immediately after the interviews all of them were transcribed. It was analyzed by the Ground theory of Corbin and Strauss. Results: A derived core category was 'Acquiring PBL'. 4 stages of the acquiring process were derived and written in time sequence: chaos, confusion, beginning insight, and achievement stage. Conclusion: The results will not only expand understanding of the students for the facilitator and school which has adopted PBL but also provide information to develop an orientation program for PBL. Further research on the facilitator's role experiences is recommended.

  • In research on the role of facilitators, studies on the effects of facilitators who conduct meetings and workshops within companies on innovation-oriented culture, team empowerment, and team creativity are insufficient. The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of the role of the facilitator (process management, change management) on innovation-oriented culture and team empowerment, and the effect on team creativity by mediating innovation-oriented culture and team empowerment. To this end, we surveyed members with experience in facilitating workshops at domestic companies and analyzed 299 collected data using SPSS 24 and Smart PLS 3.0. (+) had an effect. Second, innovation-oriented culture and team empowerment had a positive (+) effect on team creativity. Third, the role of the facilitator had a positive (+) effect on team creativity by mediating innovation-oriented culture and team empowerment. Through this study, the relationship between the role of the facilitator and other variables was explored and theoretically expanded, and practical implications for the role of the facilitator and enhancement of creativity required by the organization were presented.

  • 최근에 들어와 그 응용분야가 확대되어 가고 있는 에이전트 소프트웨어는 점점 그 크기와 복잡성이 커져 감에 따라 소프트웨어 개발치 효율성을 필요로 하는 추세이다. 이에 따라 네트워크에 분산되고 이질적인 시스템에 존재하는 에이전트들은 자신의 정보를 효율적으로 교환할 수 있도록 하기 위해 통신 프레임웍을 필요로 하게 되었다. 본 논문에서는 네트워크에 존재하고 동일한 환경 또는 서로 다른 환경에 존재하는 에이전트들 간의 의사 소통을 위한 통신 프레임웍의 설계 및 구현을 제시한다. 기본적으로 에이전트 소프트웨어 아키텍처는 KRIL(KQML- Router Interface Labrary), Router, Facilitator로 구성되어 진다. 같은 호스트에 존재하는 에이전트들은 같은 주소를 가지기 때문에 각기 다른 Router를 가질 필요 없이 하나의 Router를 공유한다. Router는 로컬 호스트에 존재하는 에이전트들의 리스트를 유지 관리하며, 로컬 에이전트가 보낸 메시지의 수신자가 자신의 리스트에 없을 경우 Facilitator를 통해 다른 호스트에 존재하는 에이전트에 메시지를 전달한다. 서로 다른 환경에 존재하는 에이전트들 간의 통신과 스레드 관리, 병행처리와 동기화 등을 위해 KRIL은 ACE(The Adaptive Communication Environment) 라이브러리를 사용하였으며, Router와 Facilitator는 Java로 구현하였다.

Federated Architecture of Multiple Neural Networks : A Case Study on the Configuration Design of Midship Structure (다중 인공 신경망의 Federated Architecture와 그 응용-선박 중앙단면 형상 설계를 중심으로)

  • This paper is concerning the development of multiple neural networks system of problem domains where the complete input space can be decomposed into several different regions, and these are known prior to training neural networks. We will adopt oblique decision tree to represent the divided input space and sel ect an appropriate subnetworks, each of which is trained over a different region of input space. The overall architecture of multiple neural networks system, called the federated architecture, consists of a facilitator, normal subnetworks, and tile networks. The role of a facilitator is to choose the subnetwork that is suitable for the given input data using information obtained from decision tree. However, if input data is close enough to the boundaries of regions, there is a large possibility of selecting the invalid subnetwork due to the incorrect prediction of decision tree. When such a situation is encountered, the facilitator selects a tile network that is trained closely to the boundaries of partitioned input space, instead of a normal subnetwork. In this way, it is possible to reduce the large error of neural networks at zones close to borders of regions. The validation of our approach is examined and verified by applying the federated neural networks system to the configuration design of a midship structure.

Emerging Role of Primary Leader in Group Interaction with Mechanics Problems During Upper-level Mechanics Course

  • According to social constructivism, group interaction is very important when students construct their knowledge. Many researchers have developed methods of teaching on the basis of group interaction because they recognized the importance of group interaction. There are a large variety of issues related to group interaction including group size, the gender and ability composition of groups, seating arrangements, textbook use, gestures, and role assignments. However, research on group interaction in science learning is still insufficient. In this study, we focused upon the emerging role of the primary leader. We investigated the primary leader's diverse role when students are solving mechanics problems. The participants were one group composed of three students in an upper-level mechanics class. To analyze these students' group interactions, their verbal interactions during meetings were videotaped and audiotaped during one-semester period. We also conducted interviews with the three students and analyzed their reports. As a result, we could find a special student who had the role of primary leader. We could also find the leader's three different leadership roles in different problem situations by inductively; explainer, facilitator and evaluator. Group interaction had different aspect according to the different role of leaders. The group interactions were the most active when the leader played the role of facilitator.
