  • Introduction: Maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) is essential before surgery under general anesthesia in maxillofacial trauma patients. MMF is used basically to reconstruct the occlusion and occlusal stability to recover the facial shape and oral functions. The arch bar and wire is a traditional method for MMF, but it can not only bring pressure to the periodontal ligaments and teeth but also cause a penetrating injury to the surgeons. Materials and Methods: In this study, 198 patients with an open reduction using a manual reduction without MMF from September 2005 to May 2010 in Dankook University Dental Hospital were subjected to a follow-up evaluation during the postoperative 4 months periods. This study evaluated the incidence of complications according to the condition of the patient (gender, age), the state of bony union of the fracture sites and a numeric rating scale evaluation for postoperative pain scoring. Results: 1. The complications were classified into major and minor according to the seriousness, and the major complication rate was as low as 2.02%. Only 2 cases of re-operations (1.01%) were encountered. In the classification according to the fracture line, plate fracture was observed in both cases of mandibular symphysis fracture, and angle fractures and loosening of two screws were noted in the case of mandibular angle fracture. 2. The complication rate was similar regardless of gender and age. 3. The degree of bony union was satisfactory, and the complication rate was reduced as the bony union improved. 4. More patients complained of pain as the operation time was increased. Conclusion: The use of MMF is not always necessary if a skilled assistant is provided to help manually reduce the fracture site. Compared to other studies of mandibular fracture surgery using MMF, the complication rate was similar using only manual reduction and the patients' discomfort was reduced without MMF.

  • Recently, sagittal split ramus oseotomy and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy have been commonly performed for the correction of mandibular prognathism, occurred to abundant oriental people. Many authors have studied the soft tissue change after orthognathic surgery, especially between mandibular hard tissues and soft tissue of lower lip, but the study of upper lip change is comparatively little. Therefore, we studied the 12 patients, operated only sagittal split ramus osteotomy without genioplasty or maxillary osteotomy in department of oral and maxillofacial surgery, Hanyang university hospital from 1996. 1. 1. to 1998. 7. 20. Preoperative and postoperative cephalometric view was measured to know the change of upper lip position and shape after mandibular setback. The result were obtained as follows. 1. The ratio of upper lip change amount to lower incisor horizontal movement was 15.1%. 2. The ratio of lower facial profile between Sn-Stm and Stm-Mes was changed from 1 : 2.352 to 1 : 2.069 after operation. 3. Post-operative upper lip was flattened 72.4% compared with pre-operative one. 4. The vermilion zone of the upper lip increased 56 % horizontally, 5.8% vertically after operation. 5. The vermilion zone ratio of the lower lip to the upper lip was changed from 1 : 1.253 to 1 : 1.348. 6. The distance between esthetic line and Ls was changed from -3.958mm to -1.15mm.

  • A new practical implementation of a facial verification system using cumulative histogram of surface curvatures for the local and contour line areas is proposed, in this paper. The approach works by finding the nose tip that has a protrusion shape on the face. In feature recognition of 3D face images, one has to take into consideration the orientated frontal posture to normalize after extracting face area from the original image. The feature vectors are extracted by using the cumulative histogram which is calculated from the curvature of surface for the contour line areas: 20, 30 and 40, and nose, mouth and eyes regions, which has depth and surface characteristic information. The L1 measure for comparing two feature vectors were used, because it was simple and robust. In the experimental results, the maximum curvature achieved recognition rate of 96% among the proposed methods.

  • In this paper, Face recognition algorithm is designed based on optimized pRBFNNs pattern classifier using three-dimensional scanner. Generally two-dimensional image-based face recognition system enables us to extract the facial features using gray-level of images. The environmental variation parameters such as natural sunlight, artificial light and face pose lead to the deterioration of the performance of the system. In this paper, the proposed face recognition algorithm is designed by using three-dimensional scanner to overcome the drawback of two-dimensional face recognition system. First face shape is scanned using three-dimensional scanner and then the pose of scanned face is converted to front image through pose compensation process. Secondly, data with face depth is extracted using point signature method. Finally, the recognition performance is confirmed by using the optimized pRBFNNs for solving high-dimensional pattern recognition problems.

  • As society develops, the importance of safety for individuals and facilities in public places is getting higher. Not only the areas such as the existing parking lot, bank and factory which require security or crime prevention but also individual houses as well as general institutions have the trend to increase investment in guard and security. This study suggests face feature extract and the method to simply divide face region and head region that are import for face recognition by using color transform. First of all, it is to divide face region by using color transform of Y image of YIQ image and head image after dividing head region with K image among CMYK image about input image. Then, it is to extract features of face by using labeling after Log calculation to head image. The clearly divided head and face region can easily classify the shape of head and face and simply find features. When the algorism of the suggested method is utilized, it is expected that security related facilities that require importance can use it effectively to guard or recognize people.

  • The prosthodontic treatments in maxillary anterior teeth focus on achieving esthetic appearances. It is possible to improve the esthetic appearance by adjusting the shape, arrangement, and color of the maxillary anterior teeth. For anterior teeth restoration, it is necessary to evaluate the relationship of teeth, lip and gingival architecture with the facial profile of patient. Also, clinician needs to fully understand what the patient wants to. DSD (digital smile design) concept can be applied as a tool to improve communication with the clinician, technician and patient. In addition, DSD can help to meet the needs of the patient. In this case, it was impossible to achieve symmetry due to congenital missing of maxillary central incisor. The definitive treatment goal was to get the harmony of maxillary anterior teeth, lip and the patient's face. This case report describes that the patient and clinician got the satisfying esthetic outcome by using DSD.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this paper is to study the correlation between cheekbone and life span prediction. Methods : The 『Huangdineijing』 was searched for verses that include terms that refer to the zygoma such as '顴骨', '䪼', '頄', '目下', '墻'. Terms such as '大骨' that are directly related to life span were searched as well, of which the results were analyzed. The relationship between bone shape and life span, the characteristic of facial bone diagnosis, the relationship between zygoma diagnosis and life span, and zygoma related contents in physiognomy texts such as the 『Mayixiangfa』 were examined. Results & Conclusions : Dagu[大骨, big bone] refers to bones in major joints that reflect the condition of Essence Qi, which is why the diagnosis of Dagu is key to determining one's life span. The zygoma is the big bone of the face, and a bad complexion in this area reflects pathogenic heat penetration into the Kidney, which is the foundation of Yin. As Kidney water as Yin Essence is directly connected to life, complexion change in the zygomatic area is highly relevant to life span. Moreover, as one of the main bones where the Kidney Essence is concentrated, the zygoma is the last to stand when the body is deteriorating, as it is the manifestation of heightened bone qi that is rooted in Yin Essence, thus an important site that provides clues to determine one's life span.

  • As a makeup technique for a baby-faced image, there will be a difference in perception of the expression technique of baby-faced makeup according to general matters.' Two hypotheses were supported: 'There will be a difference in perception of the expression technique of baby face makeup depending on the general characteristics', and the makeup technique for creating a baby face image is an important function for both men and women, as well as appearance. As a 'physical resource' for social activities, it was confirmed that there is an improvement in the efficiency of the body and mind and an outstanding improvement in mental ability in daily life. Through the results of the study on 'expression of baby face image makeup', awareness and interest in baby face images are high, but research on the production of baby face images is needed. The need for facial expression elements for baby face makeup is expected to be used as basic data for developing baby face images, and this study focuses on external face management for baby face images and baby face makeup.
